BOARD MESSAGE Somersett Owners Association
As President of the Somersett Owners Association, I am proud to reflect on the vibrant community we’ve built together. Nestled between the majestic Sierra Nevada range and Peavine Peak, our 2,391-acre master-planned community is home to nearly 11,000 residents, two world-class golf courses, two clubhouses, over 27 miles of scenic trails, and a network of open spaces that preserve the natural beauty of our region. Somersett is more than a neighborhood—it’s a lifestyle, where cluster homes, greenbelts, and wildlife corridors create a harmonious blend of recreation, relaxation, and community spirit.
At the core of our success is the unity of our community, which includes our valued sub-associations: The Village, The Vue, and the Del Webb Sierra Canyon community. Each brings its own unique character to Somersett. Somersett proper which includes the majority of homes, The Village, with its 218 gated townhomes, offers a close-knit, secure environment. The Vue, home to 154 townhomes, provides stunning views and a sense of exclusivity. Sierra Canyon, a Del Webb 55-plus community with 1,212 homes and its own Aspen Lodge clubhouse, caters to active adults seeking vibrant, independent living. Together, these sub-associations enrich the fabric of Somersett, fostering a sense of belonging for all residents.
One of our proudest achievements in recent years has been the successful transition of Somersett’s management to an internal, community-led model. Previously reliant on an external management company, we recognized the need for greater control, responsiveness, and alignment with our residents’ priorities. By bringing management in-house, we’ve streamlined operations, reduced costs, and enhanced our ability to address community needs promptly—whether it’s maintaining our property, upgrading amenities, or planning events like the recent Paella and Flamenco evening. This shift has empowered our Board of Directors and staff to work directly with residents, ensuring that every decision reflects the values and vision of Somersett.
For those of you that don’t know, the Village and The Vue have fully embraced this internal management model, integrating seamlessly with the SOA’s management structure while maintaining their unique identities through their respective Boards and CC&Rs. The results speak for themselves: faster response times for maintenance requests, more transparent budgeting, and a stronger sense of community ownership. Residents of these sub-associations benefit from the SOA’s centralized resources, all managed with the efficiency and care that only an internal team can provide. While Sierra Canyon continues to operate under its own management, I personally see and hope for the entire community to be aligned under the SOA’s internal management framework and the tremendous
potential it would create.
A unified approach could enhance coordination of communitywide initiatives, optimize shared amenities, and further reduce operational redundancies. This would allow all residents to fully leverage the SOA’s resources and expertise, fostering an even stronger, more cohesive Somersett. I respect Sierra Canyon’s autonomy but invite its leadership and residents to consider the benefits of joining our internal management model, which has proven so effective for The Village, The Vue, and the broader community.
As we look ahead to a vibrant summer, I’m excited about the opportunities to continue strengthening Somersett. From poolside games like the ones at the Memorial Day Bash to improvements in our community infrastructure, we are committed to making Somersett a place where it’s truly “great to be home.” I encourage all residents to stay engaged—attend an event, share your ideas with the SOA Board, or simply enjoy a sunset hike on our trails. Together, we’re building a legacy of community pride and excellence.
Thank you for being part of Somersett’s story.
Sincerely,
Jacob Williams President, Somersett Board of Directors
Champions Needed: Join Katy Simon Holland in Building the Next Generation of Leaders!
Katy Simon Holland and her husband, Mike, moved to Somersett in 2014. Newly married, they were ready to start fresh in a home they chose together. After touring more than a dozen homes around Reno, they decided to explore Somersett, where their daughter had once worked at the front desk while attending McQueen High School.
They fell in love with their home for its spectacular views, easy access to I-80 (making trips to their grandkids in Spanish Springs and the Bay Area or their retreat in Lake Almanor a breeze), and the miles of scenic trails in Sierra Vista Park—just outside their back fence. They share their home with their Aussiedoodle, Major, who joins them for daily trail walks and winter snowshoeing adventures.
They enjoy Somersett’s resort-like amenities, from the Canyon Nine golf course and yoga classes to the pool and community events. Their shared love of travel has taken them across the globe, from Vietnam and Cambodia to Chilean Patagonia, Europe, the UK, and many national parks. But no matter how far they go, they always look forward to coming home. As Katy says, “I tell people that living here is like living at a resort— there’s truly something for everyone at Somersett!”
Now retired, Mike and Katy stay active with their family (pictured above) and continue their long-standing involvement in the community. Mike completed a 36-year career with FedEx
as Managing Director of FedEx SmartPost for the Western U.S., while Katy retired after 15 years as Washoe County Manager.
Katy has expanded her public service through leadership roles on more than 10 nonprofit boards, including United Way, the Children’s Cabinet, the Tahoe Fund, PBS, and EDAWN. She also served a term as President of the Washoe County School Board and currently works as a Strategic Advisor for Strengthen Our Community, a nonprofit tackling tough issues like chronic absenteeism in schools.
Katy’s dedication to service and community leadership naturally led her back to an organization that shaped her earliest experiences—Girl Scouts. As a young Girl Scout, she built friendships and lifelong skills. Later, as a working mom, she saw the same positive impact the program had on her own daughter. Inspired by the organization’s mission and evidencebased approach, she joined the Board of Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada (GSSN) in 2023. “Girl Scouts gave both me and my daughter meaningful experiences, friendships, and lifelong skills,” she says. “Now, I want to help spread the word about the incredible work being done locally.”
Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada, chartered in 1936, serves approximately 3,000 girls and 1,000 adult volunteers across 23 counties in northern Nevada and northeastern California
including several Somersett participants.
Katie and Family
The Girl Scouts program helps girls develop leadership skills, positive values, and emotional resilience through hands-on experiences. These range from community service and outdoor challenges to earning Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards—each award building in scope and impact. The Gold Award, Girl Scouting’s highest honor, challenges girls to identify a root issue in their community and lead a project to create sustainable change. It is a prestigious achievement recognized by colleges, scholarships, and even the military.
STEM is also a core part of GSSN programming. Girls explore topics like space science, nuclear chemistry, and molecular biology through support from organizations like UNR, Panasonic, and Charles River Labs. Financial literacy and entrepreneurship are also emphasized through age-specific badge programs and the Girl Scout Cookie program—the world’s largest girl-led business. Girls gain skills in goal setting, money management, and ethical business practices.
Importantly, 100% of the revenue from local cookie sales stays in our region, supporting programs that benefit girls across all backgrounds. Through these opportunities, girls build confidence, discover their strengths, and develop skills that help them imagine—and achieve—bright futures. Girl Scouting empowers every girl to lead with courage, confidence, and character, creating a stronger community for all of us.
GSSN thrives because of dedicated volunteers like Katy. If you are inspired to make a difference in the lives of local girls, consider volunteering, donating, or spreading the word. To learn more, visit www.gssn.org or contact GSSN Development Officer Karen Rudd at krudd@gssn.org.

Golf Tip
The Short Pitch
By Stuart Smith – PGA Director of Golf
• Neutral Shaft at Address:
As we find ourselves in the middle of the season, let’s take a quick look at a finesse shot that can save strokes around the green: the short pitch shot. This shot is especially common at both the Country Club and Canyon 9.
A pitch shot is typically used when the distance from your ball to the front edge of the green is greater than the distance from the front edge to the hole. It requires height to carry over the apron, fairway, or rough, land softly on the green, and stay close to the target.
Short game expert Dave Pelz notes that the most common distance for this shot is between 9–11 yards—making it a shot well worth mastering.
Do’s for a High, Soft Pitch Shot:
• Choose the Right Club:
» Select one of your most lofted clubs—a sand wedge or lob wedge. These clubs typically have about 10° more loft than a pitching wedge, helping you get the ball airborne with less effort. They also have more weight distributed at the bottom of the club.
• Ball Position:
» Keep the ball position center to just left of center in your stance.
» At address position keep the club shaft vertical without forward lean, this helps promote loft and proper balance.
• Weight Distribution:
» Keep weight on the lead side – no shifting when hitting this shot – all weight on the lead side.
• Start with Chest and Wrists:
» Begin your short swing by rotating the chest and hinging the wrists to lift the clubhead
• Downswing Sequence:
» Let the wrists unhinge first, followed by chest rotation. The clubhead should slide under the ball. At impact, the shaft should again be vertical.
• Finish with Rotation:
» As the club gains a little momentum in the downswing with the unhinging of your wrists, turn your belt buckle towards the target to support the swinging motion and a natural and balanced finish.
By letting the club do the work and keeping the motion fluid, you’ll be able to hit high, soft pitch shots with confidence. Practice these fundamentals and you’ll start to see a real improvement around the greens—and lower scores to match!

Wildfire Ready: Mid-Year Update from Tray
by Tray Palmer
Somersett is stepping up—and making major progress protecting our community from wildfire risk. Thanks to your efforts and some creative strategies, we’re safer than ever! Here’s the latest on our wildfire preparedness and fuel reduction work.
Wildfire Ready:
Practice Makes Prepared: Evacuation Drill Success
In May, many neighbors joined our community evacuation drill to practice what to do if wildfire threatens. Knowing your routes and having a plan is critical. If you missed the drill, don’t worry—take time to review the emergency preparedness section on our home page, including the three main routes out of Somersett, and sign up for real-time alerts at smart911.com.
Making Big Strides: 183 Acres Cleared!
From January through May, crews cleared over 180 acres of wildfire fuel across Somersett. That means brush and dry vegetation has been cut back to create safer zones around homes and trails. In hard-to-reach areas where equipment can’t go, we brought in an unlikely helper—a herd of goats! These natural lawnmowers munched away overgrown plants, reducing fire danger sustainably and adorably.
Fuel Mitigation Highlights (Jan–May 2025):
From goats to crews, here’s where we’ve cleared hazardous fuel throughout Somersett:
Summer Pause: Staying Safe During the Hottest Months
To prevent accidental sparks, our mechanical and hand crews will pause wildfire mitigation during summer’s peak heat. Work will resume in October or sooner if the weather allows.
Get Ready, Stay Safe: Your Wildfire Checklist
Summer means higher fire danger—here’s how you can prepare:
• Pack a “Go-Bag.” Include water, medications, important documents, phone chargers, and a flashlight.
• Know your evacuation routes. There are three main exits out of Somersett—make sure you’re familiar with all of them.
• Sign up for alerts. Register your address and phone at smart911.com for early evacuation notices.
Avoid These Fire Risks This Summer
Simple actions can prevent disasters. Please avoid:
• Off-roading in dry hills—hot vehicle parts can ignite dry brush.
• Trailer chains dragging on roads—raise them to avoid sparks.
• Sparks from outdoor tools like grinders and mowers—use caution.
• BBQs too close to your home—keep grills at least 3 feet away and clean.
• Burning solid fuels or open fires.
• Fireworks of any kind (including sparklers). Fireworks are illegal in Washoe County and can quickly get out of control.
Thank You, Somersett!
Thanks to everyone who participated in the evacuation drill and supports our continued wildfire safety efforts. Protecting our community is a team effort—and you’re making a difference every day. Together, we’re keeping Somersett a safe and beautiful place to call home.
Meet Tahoe, the beloved Golden Retriever of Renee and Tim Herrmann—and a certified therapy dog making a big impact across Reno.
The Herrmanns moved to Somersett in 2020 from San Diego, drawn by the area’s outdoor lifestyle and proximity to Lake Tahoe. A reconnection with a high school classmate from Connecticut, who was already in Somersett, helped them keep up to date on their homebuilding progress and get connected with the community. Since settling in, they’ve even inspired other friends to make the move here too!
Longtime lovers of Golden Retrievers, Renee and Tim knew Tahoe, who joined them in 2019, had the gentle and friendly temperament needed for therapy work. When Renee retired, she turned her attention to volunteering and teamed up with Tahoe to give back. After completing his Good Citizen
certification, Tahoe officially became a certified therapy dog— and hasn’t stopped spreading joy since.
Today, you’ll find Renee and Tahoe at Renown Hospital on Tuesday afternoons visiting patients and staff (he’s even “Mr. April” in the 2025 Renown Therapy Dog Calendar!). He also joins the Paws 4 Love program at the Reno Public Library, helping kids build reading confidence as part of the Paws 2 Read initiative.
Locally, Tahoe’s a bit of a celebrity. On walks through Somersett and Sierra Canyon, he’s often greeted by name—and occasionally rewarded with his favorite peanut butter–flavored treats. He also has his own collectible therapy dog trading cards from both Renown and Paws 4 Love—many fans even collect them!
