SOMERSETT LIVING A Season of Community, Connection, and Celebration
Nestled in the rolling foothills of Northwest Reno, Somersett continues to shine as Northern Nevada’s premier masterplanned community. As we transition into the crisp days of fall, we reflect on a vibrant summer that brought our residents closer together and look forward to an exciting future marked by community growth and financial stability. From sun-soaked events to new local businesses and forward-thinking financial planning, Somersett is thriving, and it’s great to be home!
A Summer to Remember
This past summer, Somersett basked in Reno’s signature 300 days of sunshine, with warm, comfortable days perfect for enjoying our 27 miles of hiking and biking trails, two golf courses, and the resort-style pools at The Club at Town Center. The season was filled with events that strengthened our sense of community and created lasting memories. Sunset on The Boardwalk at The Club at Town Center (TCTC) was a highlight, where neighbors gathered on September 27 for an evening of live music from DJ Droversol, mini golf, craft drinks, and delicious bites from local food trucks. The Canyon Nine’s Music on the Green nights brought residents together to unwind, dance, and enjoy breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada mountains. These events, paired with the natural beauty of our wildlife corridors and open spaces, reminded us why Somersett is more than a neighborhood—it’s a lifestyle destination.
Welcoming Pine Ridge Tavern to Town Square
Somersett’s Town Square is buzzing with new energy, thanks to the arrival of Pine Ridge Tavern, a casual sports bar that opened its doors at 7665 Town Square. Owned by Somersett resident Steve Uricchio, Pine Ridge Tavern has quickly become a go-to spot for elevated bar food served with a side of personality. Open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. (with the bar staying open until 10 p.m. Sunday–Thursday and 11 p.m. Friday–Saturday), it’s the perfect place to catch a game, enjoy a meal, or reconnect with familiar faces from our community. Pine Ridge joins Sakana Sushi Bar & Japanese Restaurant, a beloved all-you-can-eat spot in the heart of Somersett, adding to the vibrant dining options that make our Town Square a hub for connection and flavor. These local businesses are revitalizing our community spaces, offering residents more reasons to gather, dine, and celebrate right at home.
A Bright Financial Future
On the business side, the Somersett Owners Association (SOA) has been hard at work over the past few months crafting a community budget that reflects our commitment to fiscal responsibility and resident satisfaction. We’re thrilled to announce a three-year plan to keep assessments flat until the final payment of our community loan is made—a significant milestone that underscores our dedication to financial stability. A large part of this success is due to the leadership of Board
Treasurer Clint Maples and Secretary Kate Falcocchia, whose strategic vision and tireless efforts have guided our financial planning with precision and care. I’m excited to share that both Clint and Kate have committed to serving on the SOA Board for another two years, ensuring continuity and strength as we navigate this pivotal period. Unlike many organizations facing rate increases, Somersett is bucking the trend by maintaining steady assessments while continuing to invest in our community’s infrastructure and amenities. From maintaining our 1,200 acres of open space to enhancing our clubhouses and trails, these investments ensure that Somersett remains a sought-after destination with some of the highest home values in Northern Nevada. Our low vacancy rate of 1.8% and median home sale price of $806,000 reflect the strength and desirability of our community, and we’re excited for the years ahead as we continue to grow and thrive.
Looking Ahead
As we embrace the fall season, Somersett is poised for an exciting future. Whether you’re cooling off at our 98-foot waterslide, teeing off at the Somersett Golf & Country Club, or enjoying a quiet evening at one of our local restaurants, Somersett offers a lifestyle that blends tranquility, luxury, and connection.
Here’s to a fall filled with new beginnings, continued community spirit, and the pride of calling Somersett home. Stay tuned for more updates in our next issue of Somersett Living, and don’t forget to join us at upcoming events listed on somersett.com. It’s great to be home!
Sincerely,
Jacob Williams President, Somersett Board of Directors
Shaping Tomorrow’s Leaders: Boys Team Charity – West Reno League
When Stephanie Hanna and other Somersett families began searching for meaningful service and leadership opportunities for their sons, they discovered boys team charity (btc)—a national 501c3 non-profit organization focused on community service, personal growth, and family involvement. Inspired by its mission, they took action. In 2021, they started working to launch the West Reno League of btc, creating a new chapter dedicated to empowering local boys through structured, purpose-driven volunteerism.
Now entering its fourth year, btc West Reno continues to grow, welcoming boys in grades 7–12 and their families into a unique experience that blends leadership development, service learning, and parent-son connection.

Golf Tip
Putting
By Stuart Smith – PGA Director of Golf
2:1 ratio—backstroke to through stroke. Think “AP-ple PIE” as a simple reminder.
As cooler Fall and Winter temperatures keep many of us off the course, it’s the perfect time to sharpen your putting fundamentals at home. A few simple adjustments can make a big difference when you’re back on the greens.
» Ball Position & Setup: For right-handers, place the ball slightly left of center with hands centered or just forward. Keep the putter shaft perpendicular to the ground so the ball is struck on the gentle ascent of the putter head.
» Eyes & Alignment: Position your eyes directly over—or slightly inside—the ball to improve alignment to the target. You may need to adjust the length of your grip on the putter for the right setup.
» Lower Body Stability: Apply light outward pressure on your knees to keep the lower body stable and avoid side-to-side movement.
» Connected Motion: Your chest, shoulders, arms, hands, and putter should work together in rhythm. The ideal tempo is a
» Natural Arc: Let the putter follow its natural arc. Unlike a croquet mallet, putters are not designed for a straight backand-through stroke.
PGA and LPGA Tour players average a tempo of 62–72 beats per minute, or about 0.9 seconds from start to finish—0.6 seconds on the backstroke and 0.3 seconds on the through stroke. This is regardless of the overall length of the putt. Nearly every great putter shares this 2:1 rhythm, which emphasizes acceleration through impact. If you want to track your tempo, training tools like the Blast Motion Sensor measures 11 separate metrics and can provide instant feedback on tempo and stroke.
Want to improve your putting this winter?
Schedule a lesson in our Short Game Arena at the Country Club. Putting is one of the easiest skills to improve with a little guidance. Call (775) 787-1800 Ext. 1 or email ssmith@somersettgolf.com to book your session.

Wildfire Mitigation Update from Tray
By Tray Palmer – Fire Fuels Mitigation Project Manager
As we finish the second year of wildfire mitigation made possible through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Wildfire Defense Grant, we have a lot to be proud of. To date, 336 acres of fuel has been reduced, 106 acres have been treated with herbicide, and 38 acres reseeded with fire resistant mix.
Work paused during the peak summer heat to minimize ignition risks from equipment, but operations will resume in October as temperatures cool down. This season, efforts will concentrate along the south and north boundaries of Somersett and Sierra Canyon. A detailed project update will be presented on October 22 at Aspen Lodge.
We are also moving forward with important partnerships. NV Energy has committed to clearing vegetation along the transmission lines on the west side of Sierra Canyon this year, with clean-up along the southern power lines scheduled for next year.
In the meantime, fall is the perfect season for residents to take steps at home to prepare for next summer.
Invasive weed abatement:
According to Sean Gephart, Forester with the Nevada Division of Forestry, Pre-emergent herbicide is best utilized when applied in late fall, prior to snowfall. Pre-emergent herbicides act as growth inhibitors of weed seedlings. They prevent germinated seeds from developing roots, shoots, or both by depriving them of nutrients and erecting a chemical barrier in the soil surface so that the weeds cannot break through. Most pre-emergent herbicides do not harm plants that are already established, but it is always wise to read the application directions and warnings of the chemical you are using.
The Bad and the Ugly:
Our area is prone to several invasive varieties of weeds; here are the three that are most prevalent in Somersett:
Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) originated in Europe or Eurasia and was introduced to the U.S. in the mid- to late-1800s as a contaminant in seed and straw. It germinates in the fall and early spring, and grows rapidly and in high numbers, making it highly competitive with native species. It typically starts to dry out in June, just at the start of the fire season. Dry cheatgrass is one of the most easily ignitable substances in Nevada. It is the kindling that rapidly fuels many of our wildfires.
Medusahead (Taeniatherum caput-medusae) is native to the Mediterranean region of Europe. It was introduced into the U.S. in the 1880s but did not spread rapidly until the 1950s. Medusahead is most common in the western U.S. The high silica content in medusahead foliage makes it unpalatable to deer and wildlife while creating a thick thatch every season that is very slow to decompose. Medusahead acts as a fire promoter as it fills in between sagebrush and other native vegetation, creating a continuous fuel corridor that accelerates the fire cycle.
Scotch (Onopordum acanthium) and Musk Thistle (Cardus nutans) are the two distinct thistles found throughout many parts of Northwest Reno. Both are biennial species, taking two years to reach maturity from seed. Mature specimens reach between six to twelve feet from an overwintered basal rosette with singular deep succulent tap root. Both have spiny pink to purple flower heads at the terminal ends of each branch. After the plants reach seed production, they die leaving dry and flammable tan stems and branches. These invasive plants are not palatable to our wildlife, and they produce large quantity of seeds that can lay dormant for thirty-nine (39) years.
Invasive weed management & control:
The most effective way to combat invasive weeds like Cheatgrass, Medusahead, and Thistle is prevention. A healthy landscape filled with native or desirable plants creates natural competition that helps keep these species from establishing in the first place.
Physical Control
• Cheatgrass & Medusahead: Pull plants by hand before they set seed, and always dispose of them in sealed bags to prevent spread.
• Scotch & Musk Thistle: These weeds rely on a single deep taproot. Cutting the taproot at the crown with a shovel effectively kills the plant. Consistent removal of all plants—at every growth stage—over two to three years can greatly reduce infestations.
Chemical Control
Herbicides can provide effective, less labor-intensive control. Because Scotch and Musk Thistle are biennials, combining post-emergent applications (to kill existing growth) with pre-emergent applications (to target dormant seeds) can yield strong results in a single year. Wildlifefriendly pre-emergent herbicides, when applied correctly, include: Velpar DF, Garlon 4, Rejuvra™, Imazapic (Plateau), and Indaziflam, among others.
For the larger infested areas, we utilize a combination of techniques with include mastication, grazing, and herbicide treatments.
The Good:
Beyond our native vegetation there are a variety of plants that can help choke out the invasive species while controlling erosion and staying green throughout the fire season. After we clear significant fuel loads on steep slopes prone to erosion, we re-seed with the following plant varieties: western wheatgrass, crested wheatgrass, kochia, Siberian wheatgrass, silky lupine, Palmer penstemon, firecracker penstemon, white yarrow, sulfur buckwheat, and Indian paintbrush.
Tools for Our Residents
Fall is the perfect time to seed, and Somersett has launched a new program that allows residents to enhance HOA space along their property lines while also reducing wildfire risk.
Although we don’t have funding to maintain every area behind homes, residents—with permission from Somersett or Sierra Canyon HOA—can clear vegetation up to 30 feet from their property line. In return, we’ll provide a flower seed mix (while supplies last) and planting instructions to help restore the space with fire-resistant vegetation.
How It Works
1. Email tray@somersett.com to request a home assessment.
2. Following the assessment, you’ll receive the appropriate approval form to do the work
3. Once the work is complete, contact Tray again to receive your seed mix and instructions.
Taking these small steps now lowers your personal wildfire risk while contributing to the long-term safety and beauty of the community.

A Bookshop Like No Other:
Nook & Cranny Children’s Book Wagon
There’s a new way to discover stories in the Biggest Little City and it rolls on four wheels. Nook & Cranny Book Wagon is Reno’s only mobile bookstore, tucked inside a lovingly restored 1971 Turnbow horse trailer. Stocked with more than 150 curated titles for children and teens, the wagon offers families a cozy, unique, affordable, and sustainable way to discover both new and pre-loved children’s books.
Somersett resident and founder Emily Lee is no stranger to Reno. Born and raised in the city, she attended UNR majoring in Secondary Education and English and taught with the Washoe County School District before moving to Northern California in 2008. In 2021, she and her husband returned home and settled in Somersett, where they are raising their 12-year-old daughter along with two dogs and a cat. “I love living in Somersett the views and trails are incredible, and we feel so connected to this neighborhood,” Lee says.
What began as a rusty trailer with no title and a flat tire has transformed into a whimsical, story-filled treasure trove. Lee, a bookloving mom and full-time marketing and graphic design professional, stumbled across the neglected trailer on Facebook Marketplace in September 2024. Where most saw scrap metal, she saw possibility: “I’d always dreamed of running a mobile business. Books have been such a big part of my life, and I wanted to create something magical for children in our community.”
For Lee, Nook & Cranny Book Wagon is more than just a small business it’s a passion project she pours her heart into outside of her fulltime career. With help from her dad (a jack-of-all-trades!), the onceforgotten horse trailer was stripped to its bones, repaired, and rebuilt from the ground up using as much repurposed and upcycled material as possible. Today, it features new flooring, a bright and welcoming interior, and a unique piece of Reno history reclaimed wood from the beloved Sundance Bookstore.
Beyond the build, Lee navigated the behind-the-scenes hurdles of paperwork, licensing, and registration to officially bring her dream on the road. Now, the Nook & Cranny Children’s Book Wagon is open to the community, offering families a one-of-a-kind way to browse and buy books.
The wagon’s mission is simple: make discovering your child’s next book affordable, sustainable, and hands-on. From first readers to chapter books, each title is carefully selected to inspire young imaginations.
In addition to selling books, Nook & Cranny Book Wagon partners with Spread the Word Nevada throughout the year to help provide free books to students in need across Washoe County, ensuring that more children in the community have access to stories that spark curiosity and joy.
Families can find the Nook & Cranny Book Wagon most Sundays at the Riverside Farmers Market at Idlewild Park in Reno from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. (weather permitting).
“It’s more than just a place to buy books,” says Lee. “It’s an experience. Kids can climb inside, explore every nook and cranny, and leave with a story that’s all their own.”

There’s a new place in Somersett to gather with neighbors, share a good meal, and enjoy time together. Pine Ridge Tavern, owned by fellow residents Steve and Stephanie Uricchio, was created with a simple goal: to give the community a spot that feels both inviting and familiar—with food you’ll want to come back for again and again.
The menu blends comfort with creativity. Favorites like warm pretzel bites and crispy chicken wings are joined by pizzas made from scratch in the tavern’s dedicated oven. Rotating weekly specialty pies keep things fresh, and soon mornings will bring even more to love with a drive-up coffee service offering lattes and breakfast sandwiches for neighbors on the go. Inside, eight big-screen televisions make the tavern a lively spot to catch a game, while the outdoor patio is perfect for lingering over lunch in the fresh air. A private dining room, seating up to 16, provides a welcoming space for family celebrations or community get-togethers. The full bar, featuring 15 beers on tap, makes it an ideal stop after work or for cheering on your favorite team this football season.

FlyBy.Homes
After almost 20 years in San Diego, Mark and Keri Sarojak were ready for a new adventure. They began exploring places that offered their ideal mix of options—mild weather, low humidity, and plenty of outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, dirt biking, and golf. A welcoming community and great dining (especially sushi!) were also high on their list.
Reno quickly rose to the top of their options, but it wasn’t until someone suggested they check out Somersett that everything clicked. A visit to the Cliffs Sales office sealed the deal—they put down a deposit that very night. While their home was being built, they rented locally, giving them time to experience Somersett’s amenities and meet neighbors.
Now happily settled, Mark and Keri say the move has exceeded their expectations. From the beautiful surroundings and vibrant Town Center to the friendly community, they couldn’t imagine a better place to call home.
In addition to enjoying life in Somersett, Mark and Keri also run GeoNeo LLC, a company specializing in geospatial software development and data processing. Geospatial data is used by industries such as defense & intelligence, civil planning, and energy & mining. They’ve used their experience to create a new on-line platform tailored specifically for homeowners and property managers called FlyBy. FlyBy usesimagery captured from airplanes, ensuring high-quality results without the privacy concerns –and noise - often associated with drones.
With FlyBy, property owners can quickly and easily check the visual status of their property onlinewhether it’s a primary residence or vacation home— saving time and expense compared to an in-person visit. The clear, up-to-date imagery can reveal roof, driveway and yard conditions as well as help identify fire zones, monitor vegetation encroachment, and even support insurance documentation when needed.
Mark brings 25 years of experience in the geospatial industry and Keri has a background in real estate management and sales. Together they built FlyBy as an affordable tool that puts powerful imagery in the hands of everyday property owners. Plans start at just $100 per year, making it an accessible way to keep an eye on your property and enjoy extra peace of mind.
