Hello, As we approach the final weeks of 2018 I’ve been reflecting on our achievements this year. At Just Cuts we are all ladies and gentlemen, serving ladies and gentlemen, and the ladies certainly make up the majority segment of the group. As a woman in a leadership role myself I’m proud to say that at Just Cuts we’re big advocates for women in business. In fact, 37% of our Franchise Owners are women and over 90% of Stylists in the group are female also. A big thank you to all the amazing women who make our group so successful.

So successful in fact, that we’re delighted to confirm that Just Cuts has been listed in the top 500 private companies of 2018 by the IBISWorld Research House. We’re humbled to make the list and it’s these accolades that keep us on our toes to do better. Our current focus includes sustainability steps. We’re close to reaching a zero plastic bags in salon policy and, did you know that all the packaging for our JUSTICE Professional products are fully recyclable? We’re also committed to the ongoing training of our Stylist Teams with a nation wide trends training road show currently taking place in collaboration with Andis.

With 3% year on year growth, Just Cuts is a wellestablished Australian brand and we’re growing into the International marketplace with salons across New Zealand. I’ve actually just returned from a trip to train and support the Team at our Just Cuts UK salon which opened it’s doors in early 2018.

I’ve been working with our JUSTICE Professional Warehouse Team in Sydney for a big part of 2018. We opened our (very large) garage doors in May 2017 and it’s been busy times since. The JUSTICE Professional Warehouse adds real value to the Just Cuts Franchise brand. It’s a one stop shop to support the Just Cuts system. It’s the place that allows us to deliver an exclusive, salon professional haircare and styling range to our Teams and Clients. We’re currently working on new developments for our 2019 product launch. Watch this space!

We’d like to extend heart felt thanks to our Clients and Teams that allow us to support two deserving charities. Your donations and awareness for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and S.A.N.E make a real difference to the lives of others. We’ve also been able to help out other Aussies in need over the past few months. We’ve donated products to schools in the outback and in this issue we share a great story about our favourite Just Cuts Brand Ambassador, Grant Denyer who’s been out and about helping raise awareness and much needed funds for our drought stricken farmers.

This years Owners Conference took place in the red desert of Alice Springs.

The Just Cuts Owners embraced the red dust for the conference and got into the spirit of the event by attending the awards Priscilla Style!!

FRANCHISEE OF THE YEAR Michael and Angela own and operate Just Cuts Hornby.

When did you first join the Just Cuts Community and how did you become an Owner?

Six years ago, we made the move to New Zealand from Perth Western Australia to be closer to our family.

Michael has been a hairdresser for over 40 years and in Perth we had our own fullservice salon and being an Owner again appealed to us.

After arriving in Christchurch Michael worked at Just Cuts Riccarton and eventually became the Team Leader. That experience gave us the desire to become part of the Just Cuts family. We just realised how good the product is.

As luck would have it, we were contacted by Just Cuts to open a brand-new salon in The Hub, Hornby. We officially opened at the end of July 2016 – so we have been there just over two years. When we opened we were the only retail shop in the new mall area, so we gave away a lot of balloons and lollies, so Clients would know where to find us!

What are some highlights of your time as a Just Cuts Owner?

The conference in Alice Springs! It was just so much fun! And becoming NZ Franchisee of the Year 2018 of course!!!

Another highlight has been watching the growth of our Stylists and being able to support them. We have a lot of the same Stylists from when we opened and it’s a really great Team.

We enjoy being involved in the salon, the Just Cuts community and meeting and supporting our local Client base with Michael working in the salon five days a week, and Angela being ‘the operations’ guru!

What have been some of the challenges?

Finding Stylists in Christchurch – the city lost salons and hairdressing colleges during the 2011 earthquakes. So, finding Stylists is tricky.

Many trades suffered but it’s starting to increase again with many people returning.

It’s always a juggle having enough Stylists on the floor as we are growing – ideally you need to have the right amount of Stylist to serve your Clients so you don’t lose them.

The Hub Centre Management have been very supportive of the business and we also promote other businesses in the centre.

What’s your favourite thing about being an owner?

Being able to provide employment for local people and see them grow in their roles

as well as play a part in supporting local communities by sponsoring community organisations.

Brilliant products, a tried and true brand, our AMAZING TEAM and, of course, our fantastic Clients!

What are the biggest differences from owning your own salon to being part of the Just Cuts group?

Support – being part of a community and having the support of the Academy Team and other Owners. There’s no guess work – you’re not left to take a stab in the dark – there is always an answer to any question just a phone call or email away, and it’s so much easier to have someone to ask as most challenges have happened before and someone usually has the answer!

How did you get involved in Just Cuts and how did you become Multi-Franchise Owners?

Seven years ago, we sold a business that we founded and franchised. This was a photography and video production and marketing business, mainly dealing in events and the corporate arena. The timing was perfect to leave the industry and look for something new.

After taking a well-earned break, we started looking at various types of franchise models, including hospitality, and retail businesses, when we stumbled across Just Cuts in a franchise magazine. We didn’t know much about the brand, but after more investigation, we learned that it was a well-established franchise, over 25 years running, with highly professional standards. We also like that it was primarily service based, with a great retail product range exclusive to Just Cuts, to back it up.

Our first salon in Westfield Knox, VIC was a new site. After building the business over nine months we knew we were in the right business. Within one year, we purchased two more existing Just Cuts salons in Doncaster East and Plenty Valley. Over the following 10 | JUST NEWS Issue 3, 2018

two years we opened two more new sites, one in Mildura, which is 500kms away from home, and the other in Glen Waverley.

We ensured we were growing at a steady pace, and had profitable businesses at each stage of expansion.

What are some of the highlights of being a Just Cuts Owner?

Winning Franchisee of the year this year has been a great highlight! Being recognised for all the effort we’ve put in, and following the franchise system to a tee is rewarding.

Each new salon we have opened has been a great highlight as well.

Georgina and I love attending the annual conferences and Owners’ meetings and meeting other Owners. We haven’t missed a meeting yet in four years! The information that is shared amongst the owners is priceless, and fundamental to being successful.

I have also served on the Franchise Advisory

Winning Franchisee of the year this year has been a great highlight!

Council (FAC) board for three years which has been a great experience.

What are some of the difficulties you’ve faced as an Owner?

The first salon we purchased was a brand new salon in Westfield Knox which meant we had to work hard on marketing and getting it to a profitable business. At the time we were new to the industry, so we had a lot to learn.

Hairdressing is all about Client service, and having the right people in your teams makes all the difference. We have amazing Team leaders at each salon, and excellent stylists.

Communication and respect go a long way…

If you value your Teams they will value your business.

Any tips for new Owners or someone interested in a Just Cuts Franchise?

Make sure you have enough working capital to keep the franchise going in the early days of opening. It’s very rare to open the doors and be profitable from day one.

Choose a franchise that suits you and your lifestyle. Just Cuts is not a business that you can just set up and walk away from if you want to succeed. As an Owner you must be present, get to know your Team Members, and your Clients. Create an atmosphere that is pleasant and inviting. A happy Team means happy Clients!

Just Cuts is a great franchise to be involved in. The Just Cuts Academy is constantly supportive and is without that stiff corporate approach to business. You can just pick up the phone and speak to the CEO if necessary, or any one of the great support Team.

THE GREAT BIG TRAINING TOUR Reggie our National Sales and Education Manager has been touring the country training our Just Cuts Stylists on our JUSTICE product range and how to do a great fade.

Reggie has been travelling the country teaching our Just Cuts Stylists how to do the perfect fade alongside ANDIS trainer and master barber, Anthony Staltari.

In order to raise money for our Aussie farmers, the pair hosted a Black Tie & Boots Ball in Bathurst on August 11 along with a guest performance from Guy Sebastian. Proceeds from the event went towards the employment of a Rural Support Counsellor for the Bathurst Area who will provide critical support for farmers and their families.

The event was a huge success raising over $150,000 to support struggling farmers.

It’s an incredible story of hard work and a positivity.

We sat down with Diane to find out how she got into hairdressing and what she thinks about her new role as Franchise Owner!

Q: How did you get your start in hairdressing?

I got my start at 14. I would work at the local independent salon in my area on Saturdays for free!

Honestly, I’m so grateful that I walked into Just Cuts Hurstville 21 years ago looking for a job. I have never looked back.

Becoming a Franchise Owner is so much easier than starting a business on your own. I love the community and family that I have here, because that is what it is. It really is a family and the ongoing support is amazing. I could never have done it without all the love and support from the Just Cuts community.
