A WORD FROM DENIS People keep asking me how I feel about our now iconic global brand turning 30. The story is quite simple.

ear Owners, Stylists and Clients, I am extremely proud to be part of an Australian owned private business made up of independent small businesses throughout the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia. 2020 was the year we were to celebrate 30 years in business. While we had a small celebration for our very first franchisee Leigh-Anne Brosens and sent out lovely headband gifts and hats to our Stylists. The major celebrations will be on hold until 2021. It’s in these times that we need to come together as a community and support each other. Our Stylists are here for you throughout these difficult times. We have received countless feedback from Clients where a Stylist has just made their day. We cannot underestimate the skill of a Hairdresser and the way they can make you feel inside and out. We strive to ensure Stylists offer a complete professional service and to recommend a full home haircare and styling regime once you have left the salon. In these tough times I ask you to keep supporting each other, being there for each other and we as a brand will do our damnedest to ensure a safe and hygienic environment for our Clients. In good and bad times hair still grows and we will always be here to ensure you look and feel your best every time. I’m also proud to say we have launched an online incentive program for Just Cuts in your community. You can now shop JUSTICE Professional online. 30 years ago, I was working as a Stylist in our full-service hairdressing salon called 123 hairdressing, so-called because it only had three prices, today it’s called bundling. A simple price structure is part of our success. At 123 hairdressing we had a full time permer and tinter, unheard of at that time. At that time I also had four Just Cuts all in Sydney: Hurstville, Miranda, Bondi Junction and Eastgardens. More importantly, one of our young hairdressers approached me and wanted to start her own hairdressing business. She must have seen something in the prototype I had created. The salons were organised and ran smoothly. To my delight this young hairdresser wanted to copy the Just Cuts brand. Her Name is Leigh-Anne and she started the very first Just Cuts franchised salon and you’ll read more about Leigh-Anne in this issue. I thank Leigh-Anne for taking that scary step and trusting in us, and to all the people who helped us get there. Thank you to our existing and past Just Cuts Franchise Owners, our hard-working Stylists all Just Cuts Team Members, the dedicated Just Cuts Academy Team, JUSTICE Warehouse Team, all our suppliers and advisors, and, the millions of Clients around the world. Thank you for the last 30 years, your trust in Just Cuts and your trust in me. It has been a great honour to know and work with you all, I am humbled by our success together. What an exciting journey it has been. I feel today as I always do about our very special Just Cuts community: Together, we will always strive to do better. I have witnessed many brands that have fallen away over thirty years. JUST CUTS’ FIRST FRANCHISE TURNS 30! A Just Cuts Timeline
1982
Denis McFadden moved his full-service salon to new premises, and with the remaining three months on the old premises he held a promotion offering a ‘no appointment, $6 Style Cut for all Clients. The response was outstanding and the idea of Just Cuts was born.
1983
The first Just Cuts salon opened its doors to the public and in 1990, the first Just Cuts Franchise opened at Engadine in Sydney’s southern suburbs; a salon that is still successfully owned by the first ever Just Cuts franchisee. 4 | JUST NEWS, 2020

Just Cuts ventured across the ditch! The very first Just Cuts New Zealand opened in AucklandSt Lukes Shopping Centre.

Just Cuts launched 2018 with a bang by opening the first Just Cuts United Kingdom Salon in Intu-Lakeside Essex, 13th January.
Jump forward 27 years, Just Cuts ushered in a new era, building a state of the art warehouse and international distribution centre in Caringbah, NSW to support the JUSTICE Professional range, Just Cuts’ exclusive range of professional haircare and styling products. The warehouse is a one stop shop for all salons.

CELEBRATING JUST CUTS ENGADINE, THE FIRST JUST CUTS FRANCHISE Just Cuts Engadine owner Leigh-Anne Brosens is celebrating 30 years as a successful Franchise Owner. Leigh-Anne opened the first Just Cuts franchise, deciding to open her own salon while working as an apprentice with Just Cuts Founder and Managing Director Denis McFadden. “I started working with Denis as an apprentice when I was 17 – I worked with him for 8 years and helped run 3 of his salons,” says Leigh-Anne. “I fell pregnant at 23 years old, and I remember talking to my husband about opening up my own salon so I wouldn’t have to be at work every day. I asked Denis and I’m so grateful he gave me a go.”
long serving Stylist Lynette, who says the secret to the success of Just Cuts salons is the no appointment, just walk-in model. “When I first started in the salon with Leigh-Anne, I was surprised at how popular it was,” says Lynette. “In other salons you might be split between 4-5 different Clients at once, but at Just Cuts you concentrate on one Client’s hair until you’re done. I think that personal touch will never go out of style.” Leigh-Anne says the Just Cuts team have managed to minimise the impact of COVID-19 on her business. “While we took the decision to close for 6 weeks, it was like Christmas the day we reopened. There was an hour and a half wait every day for two weeks,” says LeighAnne. “Clients have really appreciated the strong stance Just Cuts have taken on keeping both themselves and my Team safe.” “We’ve picked up a lot of new Clients post-COVID, and business is back to normal even with social distancing restrictions limiting how many Stylists can be cutting at a given time.”
“On opening day I was 7 months pregnant, and we were so busy that Denis helped me cut hair on the floor for a week. There were subsequently all these Clients requesting “the boy” to cut their hair.”
“The Academy Team have been vital in ensuring we have the marketing and support required to educate our Clients on health and hygiene policies, and maintain the confidence that we’re COVID-safe. Q: What community initiatives is your Salon involved with? A: At Just Cuts Campbelltown, we like to get involved in as many things as we can to support our local community. We participate in The Worlds Greatest Shave, Share The Dignity and its secondary campaign It’s in the Bag. We support these charities regularly throughout the year. We donate gift vouchers and JUSTICE Professional packs to various events such as the Dementia Foundation Fundraiser, Kids of Macarthur Health Foundation, International Midwives Day at our local hospital, school fetes, sporting teams and the like to help support them in raising muchneeded funds for these charities and organisations. Q: Why is it important for your Salon to undertake this work and how do you feel about the impact you have made? A: Having a social conscience in business is extremely important. It shows our Clients that we care and that we want to have a positive impact on our community. Having a connection to a charity allows our Clients to see us in a positive light and encourages them to want to use us as their salon of choice. It instils a sense of trust and loyalty in our brand and could be a deciding factor in them choosing us over another salon. It has also been a great way to network with other

businesses in the area, making those connections isn’t always easy. Sharing a common goal helps to bring businesses together and I think as business owners we have a responsibility to give back to the community that supports us.
Q: Tell us about your work with local charities to cut hair for the homeless. A: Our role with We are Community Incorporated revolves around us providing haircuts for people in the community who are struggling through life for various reasons. Hairstylists have an amazing ability to make people feel better, simply by listening and providing a conversation. For us, this is not just about providing the haircut, it’s about being a connection for the Client for that 20 minutes that they’re in our chair, to make them feel normal. No Judgement, no fear, just a chat and a Style Cut. We are Community Incorporated’s priority, is to feed the homeless and provide urgent assistance and crisis accommodation to those in need. We attend a dinner service once a month and provide Style Cuts to any of the members that may like one. We love being able to help and support our local community and I highly recommend the experience. The rewards and opportunities are invaluable.
Just Cuts New Zealand partnered with Dress for Success to mark International Women’s Day 2020. The launch of the event was hosted at 11am on Sunday 8 March at The Hub Hornby, outside Just Cuts. This partnership allows Clients to receive their Style Cut for just $20 (normally $32) when they present the partnership voucher at any Just Cuts in New Zealand.

“Just Cuts Hornby is proud to have been responsible for this initiative, which we are rolling out nationwide in New Zealand. A great Style Cut is SO important for self-esteem and confidence, and this voucher for Dress for Success Clients will be the icing on the cake, or should I say, their crowning glory!” said Angela Turner, Franchise Owner of Just Cuts, The Hub Hornby. The Dress for Success event was organised by The Hub Hornby shopping centre to see quality, light worn clothing and accessories donated to help women enter the workforce. Specially sign written lockers are situated in participating retailers, including Just Cuts The Hub, Hornby. Customers can donate items by depositing them into the lockers and may also include an inspirational note for the recipient. Centre Manager, Jason Marsden says “Dress for Success is a fantastic organisation with an inspiring group of women and positive culture, we are just thrilled to be able to partner them with this initiative. All women have clothing items that they have purchased and loved at the time but don’t wear for whatever reason. The inspirational note will give an additional boost to the recipient, create a personal connection between the donor and recipient even though they will never meet.” The launch was attended by Ginny Rhodes, Executive Manager of Dress for Success, Vicki McMillan, stylist to The Hub, and Cindy Baker, Client Ambassador for Dress for Success.
