Back then Denis created systems so the salon could run without him needing to be present every day. Not so many years ago it would have been a posted letter or phone call to let us know about exceptional Client service in salon. Now it’s the use of technology that’s letting us know. This is how our Clients want to communicate with us. This is where they are everyday on Facebook, Google… While we all think how technology has changed the Post Office, Camera Shops and Book Shops we can sit back and know how lucky we are that technology can’t do a Style Cut! In the past that might have been the case but today here in the Academy I feel like we are a technology company that does haircuts. We know the hair side of the business, today we have to embrace the technology side. We are looking at technology to free you up as Team Leaders, Stylists and Receptionists so you can spend more time with the Client. You’ll see this when you go to the domestic airport self-check in. JustOnline was the platform for the recent successful national promotions and why we believe a record number of WOW pins have been presented. Again congratulations. While JustOnline is able to facilitate a national competition we look forward to it gathering information about what our Clients want, when they want it, reward their loyalty and communicate with them wherever they are, everyday. What is the story that brought you to being a Just CutsTM Franchise Owner (and a multi-unit one at that)? Having lived remotely in Stanage Bay 75km north of Rockhampton, then 100km of dirt road north into the coast, you could never tell how long the trip on the dirt road was going to take, so my first port of call upon arriving in town was to check in at Just CutsTM for a style cut. I took over both Rockhampton, QLD stores on 17 December 2012, one week before Christmas! I literally took on both salons that same day so automatically I was a multi-unit Franchise Owner. It was always my aim to grow the number of salons (even before I took over) and this would have happened sooner but I took just that little extra time to make sure that these two salons were functioning as they should before I took the next step. I opened my third store in Bundaberg, QLD on 2 October 2015 and purchased Just CutsTM Mackay, QLD on 1 April 2016. I’m currently looking at opening my fifth Just CutsTM salon in late November this year (we are waiting on contractors). There is lots of potential in Queensland for expansion even though we have vast distances and I feel I still have room for growth. The distance between Bundaberg (my most southern Just CutsTM) to Mackay (my most northern), is 750km with Rockhampton in the middle. My two Rockhampton salons are only about 4km apart!!! With all of my salons being in central Queensland regional areas we do suffer cycles of mining down turn on a regular basis, along with seasonal floods. Cyclone Marcia in February 2015 was a big challenge for everyone.

What are your favourite things about being a Just CutsTM Owner? The ongoing support I receive from the Academy (and there aren’t too many CEO’s like Denis who will fly to a place like Rockhampton to conduct interviews) and the friendships I have developed amongst the other franchisees. I am also proud to be employing the Teams that I have. I love walking into my salons to see and hear them happy and to feel a part of something as significant as Just Cuts.

And your biggest challenge? There have been a few challenges along the way, a few tears, and quite a few bottles of wine!!! Our biggest challenge in central Queensland is finding Team Members as many people in the community chased the big dollars and went to the mines to work. Completing two full shop refits within four months of each other (one store was cut in half) was a little daunting to start with as well.

What is your greatest Just CutsTM highlight moment so far? My greatest highlight ever was to be recognised this year as Australian Franchisee of the Year, especially after only 3.5 years in the system and with so many worthy Franchisees in our group. Buying my own home and a new car are also great achievements. My next highlight will be building a holiday house on my block of land!

When did you open your first salon? I opened my first Just Cuts™ salon in 2000. How did you end up becoming a multi-unit Franchise Owner? I got the offer from the New Zealand Master Franchisor that there was another opportunity to have a second salon in another mall in Hamilton and it made good financial sense to purchase this. What is your favourite thing about being a Just CutsTMOwner? My favourite thing about being a Just Cuts™ owner is the freedom, flexibility and options Just Cuts™ gives you as a life style and also the like-minded people that I have met over this time. What have been your highlights as an Owner so far? One highlight was being able to help one of my Stylists into her own Just Cuts™ and providing support and advice to help her build a successful Just Cuts™ business. Another highlight has been the excellent speakers at Just Cuts™ conferences who have inspired and motivated me to strive to increase my Client numbers by providing the best service we can and paying the team what they are worth. And your biggest challenge? My biggest challenge is being an hour and a quarter from my salons because I am a hands on person and like to be in control. But, it has taught me to delegate more and to rely on the Just Cuts™ system, which is a great system ensuring that my Teams know exactly what is required of them and the service standard expected. 10

HELPING A GOOD CAUSE Just Cuts™ teamed up with Edge Pledge to raise awareness for a fun new way to raise money for endangered Australian wildlife. Threatened Species Commissioner, Gregory Andrews took up the challenge to have his hair cut into a spiky, yellow ‘do’, similar to that of a Helmeted Honeyeater bird LIVE on Channel 7’s Weekend Sunrise. Just Cuts™ was on air to help by completing the haircut and donated $800 towards conservation projects to protect the Grey Nurse Shark. A big thank you to Stylist Jeanine from Just Cuts™ Blacktown,NSW and Just Cuts™ Rockdale,NSW for appearing live on national TV to represent Just Cuts™ on Weekend Sunrise. Jeanine was also part of the 2016 Cut-a-Rama Cutting Crew, what an amazing lady!

10 year old Simone Lofaro is a local legend after she had her locks lopped in front of all her classmates. Simone had been growing her hair for the past two years, with the aim of donating it to Variety – The Children’s Charity. So far Simone has raised more than $1000 for the cause. Simone’s mother Silvana Lofaro said ‘I am a very proud mum. One of our awesome parents who owns her business in the community volunteered to cut Simone’s hair at the school’. That volunteer is Sara Bradshaw, Franchise Owner of Just Cuts™ Carnes Hill, NSW who says ‘It was pretty cool to be a part of this’. Sara also generously donated $100 on behalf of Just Cuts™ Carnes Hill. This little guy is rocking his Style Cuts™ cut at Just Cuts™ Greensborough, VIC.
