At OM Magazine, we spotlight the people, products, and breakthroughs that are truly moving the needle in healthcare. In today’s landscape, where innovation must meet both clinical performance and patient usability, few companies are standing out quite like Cryon-X.
With a clear mission and years of development behind them, Cryon-X is disrupting the cold and thermal compression therapy space with a smarter, cleaner, and fully iceless approach. Rather than building on outdated systems, they reimagined the process entirely. The result is a line of lightweight, portable, battery-powered recovery solutions that deliver precise temperature control, real-time monitoring, and unmatched ease of use for both providers and patients.
Founded in California, Cryon-X has quickly emerged as a global leader in cold and thermal compression therapy, offering orthopedic practices, surgical centers, sports medicine programs, and post-op patients a completely new standard in recovery.
WHY DOCTORS ARE TURNING TO CRYON-X FOR MODERN, ICEFREE THERAPY
Their suite of products—including the Cryon-X Pro, Cryon-X One, and the soonto-launch Cryon-X GO—eliminate the need for ice, reduce equipment noise and bulk, and provide flexible, high-performance therapy wherever it’s needed.
From improving outcomes and compliance to giving physicians complete control over treatment modes, Cryon-X is bridging the gap between advanced technology and everyday recovery needs. We sat down with the Cryon-X team to hear how it all began, and how they’re redefining recovery, one innovation at a time.

OM Magazine: Take us back to the beginning. What inspired the creation of Cryon-X?
Cryon-X Team: We didn’t set out to make a medical device. But after identifying major gaps in the thermal compression therapy market, the team made a pivotal decision in 2022. In 2022, the CryonX team sought to provide a solution to address the needs of a broader group of patients, physicians, and end-users. They had seen the issues firsthand —systems that required too much maintenance, didn’t deliver consistently, and simply weren’t meeting the needs of real people in recovery. We saw a market leader that required continuous ice refilling and multiple iceless cold compression modalities that varied in size, weight, temperature capabilities, and performance, all utilizing the same, dated internal technology. Their collective experience gave them more than just technical knowledge. It gave them a true understanding of what patients and providers actually need. With our cumulative experience, we have a unique expertise in what the ideal patient experience looks like as it relates to cold and thermal compression therapy use during recovery. We felt we could provide a solution with superior technology that addresses all of the current gaps in the market, ice dependency, inconsistent temperature performance, loud and clunky devices. In doing so, we’d address the needs of patients and providers globally and revolutionize the cold and thermal compression therapy space.
OM Magazine: When did your product suite officially launch?
Cryon-X Team: After years of development, in 2024, our suite of Cryon-X cold and thermal compression therapies was born. The suite began with the Cryon-X Pro, a portable, battery-powered, iceless system that set a new industry benchmark.
OMMagazine: Tell us about the Cryon-X Pro. What sets it apart?
Cryon-XTeam: Cryon-X Pro was first introduced as a lightweight, completely iceless technology that has the unique capability of quickly reaching precise temperatures only previously attained by ice-based modalities. The system delivers cold therapy, intermittent or constant compression, heat, and contrast therapy—all fully customizable based on provider preferences. The Pro set a new industry standard as the first thermal compression therapy system of its kind to be battery-powered and fully portable. This flexibility allows it to be used effectively in both clinic and at-home settings, for a wide range of patients—from post-operative recovery to elite athletic rehab. Cold, intermittent/constant compression level, heat, and contrast therapy are all available and fully customizable with the Cryon-X Pro based on provider preferences. The unique compressor technology allows not only for ideal daily patient and post-operative use but also addresses the needs of world-class athletes by attaining precise temperatures as low as ice.
OM Magazine: What came next in your product evolution?
Cryon-XTeam: In Spring of 2025, the Cryon-X One was introduced to the market, offering a more tailored solution for post-operative use. The One carries over the same internal technology as the Pro, but was designed specifically for post-surgical recovery with a smaller, more portable form. The emphasis on the Cryon-X One was to design an iceless therapy that was superior in the postoperative cold and compression therapy space. We were able to make a device that was smaller and more portable than the market leader, but also utilized the same technology as the Cryon-X Pro. This allows it to perform faster, quieter, and with precise temperature control that can be monitored in real time. It’s compact and quiet, making it ideal for home use without sacrificing performance. For providers managing post-op care, it’s becoming a trusted and easy-to-use solution.
OM Magazine: There’s a third product coming soon, correct?
Cryon-X Team: The third addition to the suite of Cryon-X therapy technologies, Cryon-X GO, will launch later this year as a handheld, iceless cold and thermal therapy device. Cryon-X GO is built for flexibility and convenience. It’s ideal for targeted therapy, mobile practitioners, or anyone needing simple, highperformance recovery support without being tied to a largesystem.
OM Magazine: For providers who haven’t worked with Cryon-Xyet,whatshouldtheyknow?
Cryon-X Team: Cryon-X is a fast-growing, Californiabased global leader in cold and thermal compression therapy, delivering a suite of iceless, innovative recovery solutions to healthcare providers and patients worldwide. What Cryon-X offers isn’t just convenience. It’s about transforming recovery outcomes while addressing the real challenges that physicians, physical therapists, and care teams face every day. Whether it’s for daily clinical use, post-operative care, or athletic performance, Cryon-X is setting a new standard for whatrecoveryshouldlookandfeellike.

WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE RECOVERY TECHNOLOGY EVERYONE’STALKINGABOUT?
At OM Magazine, we’re always inspired by companies that don’t just improve healthcare, they change the way we think about it. Cryon-X is doing just that. They’re not simply advancing cold therapy, they’re redefining what recovery should feel like for patients, physicians, and careteams.
Their iceless systems take the guesswork out of recovery. No more ice. No bulky machines. No inconsistent results. Just smart, reliable therapy that’s easy to use, easy to trust, and built for today’s orthopedicpractices.

If you’re a physician, surgeon, or therapist who wants to offer patients something better, this is the moment to take a closer look.

THERE’S MORE TO THE STORY
OM Magazine is sharing the following interview, originally published by Bloom Magazine, because this message needs to keep being shared. In a time where ethical doctors are being unfairly criticized, it is more important than ever to highlight the truth and support those doing things the right way.
In a recent interview with Bloom Magazine, Mari Diaz, CoFounder of OM, delivered a message that continues to resonate throughout the workers' compensation industry. It is a message OM Magazine believes must be amplified, especially now, when good physicians are being unfairly grouped with those who do not follow best practices. For more than two decades, Mari Diaz has worked alongside physicians, employers, adjusters, and claims professionals. Her mission has remained constant: to support ethical doctors who prioritize patient care and to improve the systems that surround them.

This was followed by the development of the OM Directory, a trusted referral tool that connects employers, adjusters, and case managers with WorkCompReady Certified physicians across the country.
During the interview, Mari spoke candidly about the purpose behind OM’s creation, the role of misinformation in harming progress, and why doctors committed to doing things the right way deserve to be recognized, not criticized.
“Misinformation is dangerous,” she stated. “It damages the reputation of good doctors and makes it harder for employers and claims professionals to trust the physicians who are genuinely committed to providing the best care for their patients.”
OM was founded in 2004 with a single goal: to support ethical physicians and simplify the workers’ compensation process for all parties involved. In 2010, the organization launched the WorkCompReady Certification, a program that trains and certifies physicians who meet the highest standards of care within the workers’ compensation system.
Every doctor listed by OM is WorkCompReady Certified. These physicians have completed specialized training, follow strict compliance protocols, and are actively monitored to ensure appropriate utilization, ethical billing, and timely, accurate documentation.
“It was never about shortcuts,” Mari explained. “It was always about doing things right, supporting doctors who put patients first and helping employers and adjusters find the kind of care that leads to better outcomes.”
As industry-wide concerns grow over the possibility that some doctors may respond to reimbursement changes by inflating services or manipulating billing, Mari offered a clear response:
“Yes, that may be happening in some places. But that is not the story of the doctors OM represents,” she said. “The doctors we work with are doing things the right way. They provide the care injured workers need without unnecessary treatments or inflated billing.”
Mari acknowledged that overutilization and improper billing do exist in some areas of the industry. However, she drew a sharp distinction between those issues and the physicians within the OM network.
“The doctors we represent are WorkCompReady Certified, which means they’ve completed specialized training in workers’ comp best practices,” she continued. “Their documentation is clean, their billing is ethical, and their communication helps cases move forward, not stall. Above all, their number one priority is patient care, regardless of the payor.”
OM physicians are known not just for their credentials but for their consistency, communication, and character. These doctors follow the rules, avoid unnecessary delays, and understand the urgency that injured workers face when navigating the recovery process.
“At OM, physicians are supported in growing their practices by staying true to ethical, patient-focused care,” Mari noted. “That’s how long-term success is built, through trust, results, and doing the right thing even when no one is watching.”

When responsible physicians are mischaracterized or lumped into a negative narrative, the consequences extend beyond reputation. Trust erodes, red tape increases, and access to care is compromised, especially for the injured workers at the heart of the system.
“If people believe that all doctors are taking advantage of workers’ comp, what happens?” Mari asked. “More red tape. More restrictions. More hoops for doctors to jump through. And in the end, it is the injured workers who suffer the most because their care gets delayed, denied, or tangled up in unnecessary bureaucracy.”
OM continues to serve as a trusted resource for employers seeking to build provider panels made up of physicians who are experienced, consistent, and committed to ethical standards. The organization works closely with these doctors to ensure that communication flows, cases progress smoothly, and injured workers receive the care they need without disruption.
“Employers deserve clarity. Injured workers deserve timely care. And doctors who follow best practices deserve to be seen for what they really bring to the table,” Mari emphasized. With solid metrics, direct referral tools, and over 20 years of relationship-building in the workers’ compensation space, OM remains focused on supporting doctors who prioritize outcomes, ethics, and open communication.
“We’re going to keep doing what we’ve always done,” Mari said. “Helping doctors succeed, helping employers make better choices, and making sure the entire process from injury to return-to-work is smoother, faster, and built on trust.” Mari Diaz’s interview with Bloom Magazine was not simply a response to current events. It was a reaffirmation of values. The issue is not just overutilization. The real danger is allowing good doctors to be overshadowed by bad actors.
“I see you. I support you. And I will continue making sure the industry does too,” Mari said. To the physicians who continue showing up, doing the work, and treating injured workers with integrity, this message is for you.

Finding the Right Team Is Getting Harder and What Employers Are Doing About It
THIS STUDY AND INTERVIEWS WERE CONDUCTED BY OM MARKETING.
Earlier this year, OM Magazine spoke with employers and practice leaders from across the country as part of a national study conducted in January. These weren’t formal interviews. They were honest, real conversations about what it’s like to hire and manage teams today. One theme came up in nearly every discussion: hiring and keeping good people is more challenging than ever before. It wasn’t said with frustration. It was said with honesty. From front desk staff and medical assistants to billing teams, coordinators, and leadership roles, the story was the same. What used to work no longer does. And figuring out what does work feels like learning a whole new job. But these weren’t just conversations about the problems. They were full of ideas, new thinking, and real efforts to adapt. Across the board, employers are finding creative ways to strengthen their teams and hold onto the people who keep their practices running. There’s still a lot of hope. And a lot of progress being made.
What Employers Are Seeing
Several patterns came up again and again. If any of these sound familiar, you’re not alone. Generations are working side by side—with different expectations
It’s common to see team members in their 20s working with those in their 50s or 60s. This generational mix can be powerful, but it can also create friction. What feels like common sense to one team member might not be for another. That’s why clear communication, patience, and understanding matter more than ever.
Work means something different now
Younger employees value flexibility, mental health, and purpose. These are no longer optional. If they don’t feel supported, they move on. Quickly. And more experienced employees are adjusting to the changing pace and new expectations that didn’t exist when they started.
Remote work reshaped team dynamics
Some roles can now be done from home, and for many, it’s an expectation. But for employers, this adds complexity. How do you maintain a strong culture when some of your team is remote? How do you keep everyone aligned and accountable?
Everyone’s carrying more
Turnover, onboarding, and filling gaps have taken a toll. Many leaders shared how draining it feels to keep starting over while juggling the demands of daily operations.
What Employers Are Doing That’s Working
Despite the challenges, we heard countless examples of smart, simple strategies that are making a real difference.
1. Setting clear expectations
Many employers said they’ve stopped assuming anything. Instead, they define expectations up front—what showing up on time looks like, what professionalism means, how communication should work. These things are written down, discussed during onboarding, and reinforced in team check-ins.
2. Hiring for attitude, not just experience
The best hires aren’t always the most experienced. They’re the ones who show up curious, reliable, and ready to learn. Many practices are shifting their focus from resumes to people who care and are willing to grow.
3. Offering growth opportunities—even in small ways
Leaders are finding ways to keep their teams engaged by offering cross-training, introducing new tools, or involving staff in small projects. Growth doesn’t always mean promotions. It’s about helping employees feel like they matter and are part of something meaningful.
4. Allowing flexibility where it fits
Remote work doesn’t work for every role, but in areas like billing, authorizations, or scheduling, some practices are offering that flexibility. The key is having clear guidelines, keeping communication strong, and making sure remote staff are just as included as in-office team members.
5. Talking through the tough stuff
One of the most impactful things we heard was this: the strongest teams are having the hard conversations. They talk about generational differences, what works for them, and how they can collaborate better. It’s not always easy, but it builds trust and understanding.
WHY PATIENT FEEDBACK SURVEYS MATTER

When it comes to running a successful orthopedic practice, one of the most valuable things you can do is listen to your patients. Gathering feedback through surveys isn't just a checkbox item—it's a powerful way to understand how well you're meeting your patients' needs and where you can improve.
KeepingItSimple
First off, your surveys should be straightforward and to the point. People are more likely to fill them out if they’re quick and easy. Ask about key areas like how they felt about their visit, the care they received, and whether they’d recommend your practice to others. The more focused your questions, the better the responses you'll get.
TimingIsEverything
The best time to ask for feedback is right after their appointment. When the experience is fresh, patients are more likely to give you accurate and helpful insights. So, consider sending the survey as soon as they leave your office or within a day or two.
AnonymityEncouragesHonesty
People tend to be more honest when they know their feedback is anonymous. Make sure your patients understand that their responses are confidential. This will encourage them to be open and provide genuine input, which is what you need to make real improvements.
ActonWhatYouLearn
Here’s the key: collecting feedback is only useful if you act on it. Regularly review the survey results and look for patterns. If multiple patients mention the same issue, it’s probably something worth addressing. When you make changes based on feedback, let your patients know. It shows that you value their opinions and are committed to providing the best care possible.
WhyItMatters
Listening to your patients and making improvements based on their feedback can strengthen your practice in many ways. It builds trust, improves patient satisfaction, and can even lead to more referrals. In short, patient feedback helps ensure your practice is always moving in the right direction.
In summary, patient feedback surveys are a simple yet powerful tool for improving your orthopedic practice. Keep the process easy, act on what you learn, and watch your patient relationships—and your practice— thrive.

The most successful orthopedic practices are those that embrace a mindset of continuous improvement. Foster this culture by:
Encouraging Feedback: Regularly solicit input from staff and patients on how to improve clinical operations.
Celebrating Successes: Recognize and reward team members for their contributions to operational improvements.
Staying Informed: Keep up with industry trends and advancements to ensure your practice remains at the forefront of orthopedic care.
Tip: Host quarterly meetings to review progress, share successes, and set goals for the next quarter.
Optimizing clinical operations requires a balance of technology, teamwork, and patient-centered strategies. By standardizing workflows, leveraging innovative tools, and fostering collaboration, orthopedic practices can enhance efficiency, improve patient outcomes, and create a thriving clinical environment. The journey toward operational excellence is ongoing, but with the right approach, it’s one that deliverslastingbenefitsforbothpatientsandstaff.
DELIVERING INTENTIONAL VALUE IN ORTHOPEDIC CARE

Most orthopedic practices are already doing parts of this, tracking results, coordinating care, following up after procedures. Value-based care brings these efforts into focus. It connects the dots and encourages teams to ask, How can we do this better, more consistently, and with more intention? And that’s the shift happening in orthopedics right now. It’s not about starting over. It’s about fine-tuning what’s already in place, and making sure it’s working, for the patient, the practice, and everyone involved in the care journey. Orthopedic Value-Based Care (OVBC) isn’t a buzzword or a passing trend. It’s a practical, long-term approach to care that puts outcomes and relationships at the center. It challenges practices to prioritize what happens after the procedure just as much as what happens during it, and to build systems that support that goal.

WHAT VALUE-BASED CARE LOOKS LIKE IN A REALPRACTICE
Value-based care doesn’t mean scrapping your current workflow or taking on more work. It’s about working smarter, with clearer goals, tighter systems, and stronger communication across the board. Here’s what that looks like in the real world of orthopedic care.
1.YOUFOLLOWUP,WITHPURPOSE
Yes, follow-up calls and post-op visits already happen. But under a value-based care approach, follow-up becomes more than routine, it becomes a vital part of the patient’s recovery story.
Howpracticesaredoingthiswell:
Structured check-ins at key recovery points, 30, 60, and 90 days.
Quick outcome surveys that measure pain, mobility, and function.
Assigning a specific team member to track recovery progress.
It’s about staying involved long enough to catch concerns early, and helping patients feel cared for beyond the walls of your practice.
2.EVERYONEKNOWSTHEPLAN
When the front desk, clinical team, surgical team, and therapy partners are aligned, care becomes more consistent and efficient. That’s a key pillar of valuebased care, strong internal systems that support strong external results.
Whatthislookslike:
Standard care plans for common procedures. Clear rehab protocols and timelines. Internal communication that keeps everyone on the same page.
This level of coordination builds trust, not just with patients, but with employers, adjusters, and case managers watching the process closely.
3.YOUSPOTPROBLEMSEARLY
In many cases, poor outcomes don’t stem from the surgery itself, they come from what happens afterward. Missed therapy appointments, misunderstood post-op instructions, unmanaged pain. Catching these early can prevent complications down the road.
Waystomakethishappen:
Prehab sessions that prepare patients before surgery. Easy-to-follow wound care instructions and checklists. Dedicated recovery support through a care coordinator or nurse follow-up.
Being proactive here leads to fewer readmissions, faster recoveries, and better patient satisfaction.
4.THEPATIENTISN’TJUSTALONGFORTHERIDE
One of the most meaningful parts of value-based care is patient engagement. When patients feel like active participants in their own care, they tend to follow instructions more closely and heal more confidently.
Whatworks:
Plain-language “What to Expect” materials.
Quick, personalized videos from the surgeon explaining next steps.
Realistic timelines for pain management, therapy milestones, and return to work.
Patients who know what’s normal, and what’s not, are less likely to panic and more likely to succeed.
IT’S NOT ABOUT PERFECTION, IT’S ABOUT INTENTION
Value-based care doesn’t require perfection. It asks for presence, clarity, and purpose. Orthopedic practices already know how to treat injuries. The next step is refining how that care is delivered, measured, and experienced. That’s what OVBC is about. And in a healthcare world moving rapidly toward outcome-driven models, the practices that focus on these areas now will be the ones that lead.
If your practice is already tracking results, coordinating care, and following up with patients, you’re already laying the foundation. Value-based care simply helps you take those steps further. It brings focus, consistency, and intention to the things you’re already doing and makes them even more impactful. Outcomes over volume. Clarity over chaos. Long-term wellness over short-term fixes. That’s the future of orthopedic care and for many practices, that future hasalreadybegun.

INCREASED ADOPTION OF AI IN ORTHOPEDICS
For orthopedic professionals, this shift is not about replacing expertise, but rather enhancing it. AIbased tools are being used to support diagnostic accuracy by helping physicians analyze medical images with greater efficiency. These systems are designed to identify subtle patterns that may otherwise be difficult to detect, providing doctors with another layer of insight as they evaluate injuriesorplantreatments.
In the surgical space, AI is being used to support preoperative planning and, in some cases, guide procedures through robotic-assisted technology. These tools can help deliver more consistent precision in joint replacement surgeries, spine procedures, and other orthopedic interventions. For practices, this can translate into better outcomes, fewer complications, and shorter recoveryperiodsforpatients.
Postoperative care is also seeing potential benefits from AI integration. Some tools are being used to track patient progress through digital monitoring and predictive modeling, helping care teams identify when additional support may be needed during rehabilitation. While not every practice uses these systems, they represent a growing interest in using technologytodelivermorepersonalizedandresponsivecare.
Beyond the clinical side, AI is also making an impact on the operational side of orthopedic practices. Tools that assist with documentation, coding, and scheduling are helping reduce administrative workloads. For many offices, this has opened upmoretimetofocusonwhatmattersmost—patientcare.
It’s important to note that how and when these technologies are adopted will differ from practice to practice. Not all tools are necessary or appropriate for every setting, and the value of any innovation ultimately depends on how well it supports theneedsoftheteamandthepatientstheyserve.
THE ROAD AHEAD
The growing adoption of AI in orthopedics is part of a broader shift toward innovation, efficiency, and more personalized care. As new technologies continue to evolve, they hold the potential to improve clinical decision-making, enhance surgical precision, and support better outcomesacrosstheboard.

Each practice is unique, and the way technology is integrated will depend on individual goals, workflows, and patient needs. Still, the momentum is clear. Whether you’re a physician, administrator, orpartofthecareteam, these advancements are opening the door to new possibilities in orthopedic care.
As the field continues to evolve, stayinginformedandadaptablewillbe key. The future is promising, and the opportunities to deliver smarter, more streamlined care have never been greater.

A Chat with CEO Addy Kujawa
In the orthopedic world, having the right support can make a huge difference. The American Alliance of Orthopaedic Executives (AAOE) isn’t just another organization—it’s a community that’s dedicated to helping orthopedic practices grow, connect, and succeed. We had a great chat with Addy Kujawa, the CEO of AAOE, to find out why joining this group could be one of the best decisions you make for your practice.
OM Magazine: Addy, thanks for talking with us! Let’s start with the basics. What’s AAOE all about, and why should orthopedic professionals care?
Addy Kujawa: Thanks for having me! AAOE is all about helping the people who run orthopedic practices. We’ve been around since 1969, so we’ve seen a lot of changes in the industry. Our main goal is to provide the resources, education, and community that orthopedic professionals need to keep up with those changes and do well. We know managing a practice isn’t easy, so we want to make it a bit easier and more rewarding for our members.
OM Magazine: That sounds super helpful. What do members get when they join AAOE?
AddyKujawa: There’s a lot! First, we’ve got some awesome educational resources—webinars, workshops, and our Annual Conference, which is a big deal. What really sets AAOE apart, though, is that our resources are practical. We focus on giving our members tools they can actually use in their daily work. Plus, we provide exclusive access to benchmarking data and industry insights that help practices see how they stack up and where they can improve.

OM Magazine: I’ve heard a lot about the Annual Conference. What makes it so special?
Addy Kujawa: The Annual Conference is definitely a highlight. It’s not just a bunch of sessions; it’s an experience. We bring together orthopedic professionals from all over to learn, share, and grow. The sessions are packed with tips you can use right away, and the connections you make are priceless. Many of our members say the relationships they build at the conference are what keep them coming back year after year.
OM Magazine: Community seems to be a big deal for AAOE. How do you keep that going all year?
Addy Kujawa: Absolutely, community is huge for us. We keep it alive with special events, active online forums, and special interest groups that help our members stay connected, no matter where they are. Our online community is especially active—it’s a place where you can ask questions, share ideas, and get support whenever you need it. It’s like having a group of experts ready to help you out anytime.
OM Magazine: And AAOE does a lot of advocacy work too, right? How does that benefit members?
AddyKujawa: Advocacy is a big part of what we do. We’re out there making sure the voices of orthopedic professionals are heard when it comes to laws and regulations. We push for policies that make it easier for our members to run their practices and focus on patient care. When you’re part of AAOE, you’ve got a team working behind the scenes to help you succeed.
OM Magazine: For someone thinking about joining AAOE, what’s the biggest reason they should go for it?

Addy Kujawa: The biggest reason is the community. When you join AAOE, you’re not just getting access to resources—you’re joining a group of people who really care about each other’s success. The connections, support, and knowledge you gain are all about helping you and your practice thrive. It’s an investment in your future, and the returns are well worth it.
OM Magazine: Thanks, Addy, for sharing all this with us. It’s clear that AAOE is doing some amazing work for its members.
Addy Kujawa: Thank you! It’s been great talking with you, and I’m excited to welcome more professionals into our AAOE family. Together, we’re making a big difference in the orthopedic world.

LEADERSHIP,REIMAGINED
A Conversation with Mari Diaz
OM’s latest study reveals what’s working, and what’s next, for leaders in healthcare settings. Leadership has always been a defining part of any successful healthcare organization, but what it looks like is changing. In a recent national study conducted by OM, healthcare professionals across the country were asked about leadership: what they value, what they need, and what is helping teams succeed in today’s fast-moving environment. The responses were honest, insightful, and incredibly hopeful.
Clear communication. Emotional intelligence. Trust. Presence. These are no longer optional qualities. They’re what team members say they look for most in their leaders. And in the organizations that are prioritizing them, people are more engaged, more supported, and more likely to stay. To explore the findings more deeply, OM Magazine sat down with Mari Diaz, who helped lead the study and shared what she’s hearing and seeing from the field.
OMMagazine: Mari, let’s start with the study. What stood out most about how leadership is evolving in healthcare?
Mari Diaz: We heard the same thing from so many people. Leadership is changing. It’s not just about authority anymore. Today, leaders are being asked to show up in a more grounded, connected way. Teams want leaders who are steady, communicative, and consistent. It’s not about having all the answers. It’s about creating a space where people can do their best work without feeling overwhelmed or left out of the loop.
OM Magazine: Emotional intelligence came up a lot in the results. Why is that such a key part of leadership now?
Mari Diaz: Because healthcare is emotional. You’re dealing with people who are managing stress, responsibility, and decisions that affect lives. Emotional intelligence helps leaders respond, not react. It’s the ability to pause, listen, and lead from a place of awareness. When people feel like their concerns are heard and their work is respected, they’re more likely to stay motivated and less likely to burn out.

OM Magazine: The study also highlighted the impact of generational shifts. How is that influencing the way we lead?
Mari Diaz: It’s a big factor. Younger professionals are bringing different expectations to the workplace. They’re asking more questions. They want flexibility, meaning, and mentorship. They want to feel like they’re part of something that matters. This generation is driven by purpose, and they expect leadership that communicates clearly and treats them like individuals. That’s not a challenge. That’s an opportunity to lead better.
OM Magazine: What do you think keeps organizations from developing strong leaders internally?
Mari Diaz: A lot of places wait until someone is promoted before offering support. But leadership development shouldn’t start with a title. It should start with potential. If someone takes initiative, handles challenges well, and lifts others up, that’s someone you invest in. Leadership happens in everyday moments. The sooner we start helping people grow into those roles, the stronger the whole team becomes.
OM Magazine: Burnout is a major concern in healthcare. What did the study say about the role of leadership in addressing that?
Mari Diaz: Leadership matters a lot more than we sometimes realize. Burnout isn’t just caused by workload. It’s often caused by poor communication, unclear expectations, or lack of support. When a leader sets a calm tone, checks in, and makes space for open conversation, it creates stability. That alone can reduce stress across an entire department. And when people feel like they’re part of something structured and supported, they’re more resilient.
OM Magazine: How about clinicians or providers who are expected to lead but don’t always have leadership training?
Mari Diaz: That’s one of the most common gaps we see. Just because someone is a great provider doesn’t mean they’ve been taught how to lead a team. And that’s okay. It just means we need to support them like we would any other leader. Bring them into the business side. Give them tools to lead with confidence. When we equip people properly, they usually step into leadership naturally and with a lot of care.
OM Magazine: Based on everything you’ve seen, what direction is leadership heading?
Mari Diaz: It’s heading somewhere really positive. More people are open to learning. More organizations are investing in culture. And more teams are speaking up about what they need to succeed. Leadership today is about connection and communication. It’s about being clear, kind, and consistent. That kind of leadership helps people stay, grow, and do great work. And that’s what makes everything better.
OM’s national study shows that the future of leadership in healthcare is already here. It’s present. It’s people-centered. And it’s built on the simple things that matter most. Trust. Communication.Support.
Because when leaders lead with intention, the entire team rises withthem.

Ruschell Gladden
Empowering Success in Healthcare Administration
OM Magazine had the privilege of sitting down with Ruschell Gladden, Patient Access Director at Midlands Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery, who shared insights into her inspiring career journey and the values that drive both her professional and personal life. Ruschell began her tenure at Midlands Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery on July 7, 2010, as a Patient Services Representative and has impressively climbed the ranks to her current position. “Wow, it is hard to believe it will be 14 years this year,” Ruschell reminisced. Her progression through roles such as Front Desk Trainer, Team Leader, Assistant Manager, and Manager is a testament to her dedication, resilience, and commitment to growth.
Her inspiration to pursue a career in healthcare administration came from a deeply personal place. “My grandmother was my biggest inspiration,” Ruschell shared, describing how her grandmother’s community service—including volunteering with Meals on Wheels and visiting sick community members— instilled in her a lifelong value of service to others. That foundation of compassion, combined with Ruschell’s background as a college athlete and a football mom, naturally led her to a passion for orthopaedics and neurosurgery.
As Patient Access Director, Ruschell finds the greatest fulfillment in supporting the professional and personal growth of her team. “Seeing others succeed professionally and personally is the most fulfilling and greatest reward as a leader,” she said, emphasizing her role as a mentor and a cheerleader for those around her.
Outside of work, Ruschell’s life is full of activities that bring her joy and balance. She enjoys thrift shopping, attending community outreach events, and couponing. She’s especially excited about her newest title—“GiGi”—as she prepares to welcome her first grandchild. A pivotal moment in her leadership journey was attending her first AAOE conference. “It was the first time I took the initiative to introduce myself to others, sparking conversations that led to lasting friendships and connections,” she recalled. That experience not only helped her grow personally but also deepened her understanding of the importance of networking in healthcare leadership.
Ruschell credits many mentors for shaping her journey. Her mother, Tenice Fair, taught her to celebrate all moments—big or small. Professionally, mentors helped her develop authentic leadership skills and a mindset of resilience. At Midlands Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery, Ruschell helps ensure patient access is seamless through multiple locations and innovative services, including walk-in clinics and virtual orthopedic assessments. “We make it a priority to ensure patients can access care promptly and efficiently,” she said, reflecting the organization’s strong commitment to quality care and patient satisfaction.

One heartwarming moment Ruschell shared involved an elderly couple she considers her adopted grandparents. After Mr. A experienced a fall, the comprehensive care he received at Midlands helped him return to one of his favorite places—the golf course. Moments like these, she says, are why this work is so meaningful.
To stay at the forefront of healthcare delivery, Ruschell continues to attend industry conferences and prioritize networking. Her advice for anyone pursuing a career in healthcare administration is simple and powerful: “Never stop learning, be coachable, and build meaningful relationships.”
To connect with Ruschell or learn more about Midlands Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery, she can be reached via email at Ruschell.Gladden@midorthoneuro.com or through the company website at Midorthoneuro.com.
Ruschell’s story is a powerful reminder of how dedication, compassion, and continuous growth can lead to a fulfilling and impactful career in healthcare administration.

If Your Practice Isn’t Being Marketed, It’s Being Forgotten.
The workers’ compensation system has changed. Today, most adjusters, case managers, and risk managers are working remotely or in hybrid roles. Nearly 40% of these decision-makers leave their positions every year. Relationships that once brought consistent referrals may no longer exist—and relying on network listings alone is no longer effective. Referrals go to doctors who stay visible. If referral sources don’t see your name consistently, they will refer elsewhere.
THAT’S WHY DOCTORS TURN TO OM.
OM is the trusted resource for physicians who want to grow their workers’ compensation business. For over 20 years, we’ve worked directly with employers, carriers, adjusters, TPAs, and case managers— the people who actually decide where injured workers go for care. They continue to turn to OM because we represent doctors who understand the system and prioritize patient care.
We understand how referrals work in every state. Whether referrals are driven by employers, employees, or panel requirements, OM builds a strategy around your state’s structure—and keeps your name in front of the right decision-makers. Everything we do is built on real relationships and a clear goal: To grow your workers’ compensation referrals through consistent, expert-driven marketing.
Leanne Galligan A Journey of Dedication and Excellence in Orthopedic Care
OM Magazine had the pleasure of interviewing Leanne Galligan, the Director of Patient Services at Peachtree Orthopedics. Leanne's career journey, spanning over two decades at Peachtree Orthopedics, is a testament to her dedication and passion. Starting as an administrative assistant and rising to a leadership role, she has become an indispensable part of the Peachtree Orthopedics team. Join us as we get to know Leanne in our "People to Know" feature!
Leanne Galligan's journey with Peachtree Orthopedics began in April 1998 when she was hired as an Administrative Assistant to one of the foot and ankle surgeons. Shortly after starting, she was invited to assist the nurse in the clinic, which piqued her interest and set her on a new path. "That sounded interesting, so I said 'Yes!'" she recalls. She became a full-time clinical assistant, earned her Registered Orthopedic Tech (ROT) certification, and supported the surgeon's clinic for 22 years until his retirement in April 2020.
During her tenure, Leanne's role expanded. She became a Clinical Supervisor, focusing on Electronic Health Records (EHR) and workflows, and later joined the clinical management team full-time in 2022, with a special focus on COVID protocols and processes. When the Director of Patient Services position became available in 2022, Leanne took a leap of faith, applied, and was thrilled to receive the role, embracing it with both excitement and nervous energy.
Leanne's entry into healthcare was somewhat serendipitous. "I truly fell into the healthcare field. I moved to Atlanta in June 1996 after graduating from Michigan State University (Go Green!) and was encouraged to take temp jobs at first while I figured out the city and where I wanted to live and work," she shares. "Anyone who has had to drive in Atlanta traffic can attest to the importance of this!" Her first assignment at a neurology practice sparked a passion for healthcare, as she enjoyed the focus on helping people improve their health.
After 2.5 years, she sought a larger company and found her place at Peachtree Orthopedics. Over the years, she developed a deep interest in orthopedics, particularly the complexities of foot and ankle injuries, finding joy in seeing patients recover and return to their daily activities. "I have grown to love orthopedics and especially the disorders and range of injuries that can happen to the foot and ankle. It is truly fascinating," she shares.

Outside of her professional role, Leanne's life is equally busy and fulfilling. She has been married since 2015 to her husband, who moved from Ireland. In June 2019, they became foster parents to a sibling group of three children, aged 8, 4, and 3 weeks. The sudden change necessitated the purchase of a minivan and brought a whirlwind of activity into their lives. They adopted the children in April 2021 and now enjoy a busy schedule filled with soccer, gymnastics, school, and playdates. When she finds a moment to herself, Leanne enjoys spending time with friends over laughterfilled meals, watching soccer with her husband, traveling, or playing tennis.
As the Director of Patient Services, Leanne finds fulfillment in two main aspects of her role. Firstly, she is dedicated to making it easy for patients to access the care they need, encouraging her team to "Be the solution" and find answers rather than saying no. Secondly, she takes great joy in supporting the young, entry-level staff in the Patient Services department, helping them grow professionally and succeed. "To receive feedback from the staff that they feel seen, supported, acknowledged, and heard is the absolute best," she says.
Reflecting on her career, Leanne recalls a memorable moment from the past year when a manager told her she was "the perfect person for the role" she was in. This compliment had a significant impact on her and is something she cherishes. Throughout her journey, several mentors have influenced her. Dr. Beskin, her initial supervisor, provided invaluable knowledge and understanding of orthopedics. Connie Whittington, RN, taught her the importance of flexibility and collaboration, famously saying, "Blessed are the flexible, for they shall never get bent out of shape." Erika Noll, the current COO and her boss, guided her through the transition from clinical team member to management, teaching her the value of pausing and reflecting before responding.
Lastly, Leanne's mother instilled in her the importance of continuous learning and personal growth. "You don’t have to respond immediately… it is okay to pause and reflect," Leanne notes, reflecting on Erika's advice.
Leanne believes that essential qualities for success in healthcare include listening more than talking, showing compassion, following through on commitments, and knowing when to seek help from others. She strives to embody these qualities in her daily work, ensuring that patients receive the best possible care and support. "Listen more than you talk, show compassion, do what you say you are going to do, and know what you know and when you need to phone a friend," she advises.
Peachtree Orthopedics is committed to making it easy for patients to access the care they need. The organization focuses on providing excellent customer service and superb medical care, ensuring that patients feel welcomed and valued. This commitment to patient satisfaction is reflected in the organization's motto and the dedicated efforts of the staff. "We strive to make it EASY to access the care our patients need and focus on helping them get better and back to doing what they love," Leanne emphasizes.
Looking ahead, Peachtree Orthopedics aims to expand its reach in Georgia while maintaining its high-quality care. Leanne sees her role evolving to support this growth, ensuring that new locations are warm, welcoming, and efficient for patients. "We are focused on growing the business to better reach the expanding communities of Georgia while keeping the quality of

Leanne advises those interested in healthcare administration to learn about the various aspects of the business, consider the impact of changes on different departments, and walk through processes from the patient's perspective. Flexibility is crucial in this constantly evolving field, and adapting to changes is essential for success. "Be flexible. It is a field that is constantly evolving, and you need to be able to adapt with it to be successful," she advises.
Peachtree Orthopedics stands out in handling workers' compensation cases by offering a concierge level of service through a dedicated department. Tracy Mosley, the workers' compensation manager, has been with the company for almost 20 years and has developed strong relationships with employers and adjusters, providing a personal touch that sets them apart in the orthopedic community. "Tracy Mosley has worked hard in developing relationships with the employers and adjusters that make us unique," Leanne says.
Effective communication is key in managing workers' compensation claims. Peachtree Orthopedics ensures dedicated resources are available to all parties involved and strives to provide required documents promptly. Leanne emphasizes the importance of compassion and understanding the broader impact of an injury on the patient's life. "I always try to remember that for the injured worker, there is more involved than just the injury," she reflects.
Leanne concludes with a reminder to view injured workers holistically, considering their concerns about returning to work and supporting their families. She also highlights the value of case managers as resources and encourages easy communication channels. "It will help everyone if you have easy ways for them to reach you and for you to reach them," she advises. For further inquiries, Leanne can be reached by email at lgalligan@pocatlanta.com or by phone at 404-350-4755. Peachtree Orthopedics' website, www.pocatlanta.com, is also a valuable resource for information.
Through her dedication, compassion, and leadership, Leanne Galligan exemplifies the commitment to excellence that defines Peachtree Orthopedics. Her journey is an inspiration to many in the healthcare industry, and her story is a testament to the impact of passion and perseverance.
Robin Fielding
An Interview with The CEO of Orthopaedic Center of South Florida
We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Robin Fielding, CEO of Orthopaedic Center of South Florida (OCSF), who is not only a personal friend and mentor but also an incredible leader. Before the interview officially began, we shared some coffee and laughter, bonding over one of Robin's greatest passions: giving back. Her enthusiasm for community service was infectious as she spoke about her involvement with Give Kids The World (GKTW). With a gleam in her eye and a chuckle, she said, "Stop what you're doing right now and visit their website to donate or volunteer. Seriously, I'll wait! I encourage all our readers to support GKTW in any way they can." Robin's commitment to this cause is truly inspiring and, honestly, a bit contagious.
Switching gears to her professional accomplishments, Robin has made an incredible impact at OCSF. The center is a leader in orthopedic and podiatric care, known for its advanced treatments and outstanding patient outcomes. Employers have trusted OCSF for decades to treat their injured workers and help them return to work safely with the best possible care.
Under Robin Fielding's leadership, OCSF has been named Best Doctor in Workers’ Compensation for 2025, a prestigious honor that underscores their dedication to providing top-notch care to injured workers. This accolade, which the practice also received in 2023 and 2024, reaffirms their commitment to excellence and their mission to support injured workers.

OM Magazine: Robin, can you share a bit about your background and how you found your way into healthcare?
Robin Fielding: Sure! I was born in Brooklyn, NY, but I moved to South Florida when I was 11 years old. I'm the proud mom of two grown boys who are both married. No grandchildren yet, but I'm hopeful, lol! I consider myself a Florida girl with Brooklyn roots. I got into healthcare back in 1990, managing hospitalbased and outpatient practices for various specialties like Pediatrics, OB/GYN, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Anesthesia, and Emergency Medicine. After about six years, I was ready for a new challenge and was lucky enough to become the CEO of Orthopaedic Center of South Florida (OCSF). That was almost 25 years ago, and it’s been an amazing journey.

Samantha Julias
Leading Vero Orthopaedics with Dedication and Vision
OM Magazine had the pleasure of speaking with Samantha L. Julias, the Chief of Finance and Strategy at Vero Orthopaedics. Samantha's career journey, from her beginnings as an athletic trainer to her current leadership role, is a testament to her dedication and passion. Her diverse experiences and unwavering commitment to healthcare have made her an indispensable part of the Vero Orthopaedics team. Join us as we get to know Samantha in our "People to Know" feature!
Samantha started her career with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Florida Southern College. She worked in various settings like action sports, physical therapy, high school sports, and in a physician’s clinic. While she was working as an athletic trainer, she also took on a part-time role in a physician’s office. She found that environment much more engaging because there were always new problems to solve and things to learn. However, transitioning fully to the office setting wasn’t easy because people didn’t take her seriously as an athletic trainer. That’s what motivated her to pursue her master’s in health services administration from the University of Central Florida.
During her master’s program, Samantha did a full-time internship at Orlando Orthopaedic Center. A couple of years later, they had an opening for an office manager, and she got the opportunity to help them open a new walk-in clinic and physician’s office. Just two months after the office opened, they promoted her. Her time at Orlando Ortho allowed her to grow in various areas like marketing, business development, ancillary services, professional services, accounts receivable, and accounts payable. Eventually, she became the CFO there.
Later, Samantha joined Vero Orthopaedics as the Director of Finance and Business Development, and within four months, she was promoted to Chief of Finance and Strategy. Now, she oversees accounts receivable, accounts payable, business development, organizational strategy, and marketing.

Growing up, Samantha was really into sports and had a strong interest in anatomy and physiology. Athletic training felt like the perfect blend of those two passions. She loves the analytical aspect of her job, whether it's operationally reviewing processes to make them more efficient or determining the best way to implement a new project. On the financial side, she enjoys analyzing whether a new product or venture is a smart business decision and examining finances to see where improvements can be made.

Samantha's dedication and innovative approaches are making a significant difference in patient care and the workers' compensation industry. We look forward to seeing the continued success and growth of Vero Orthopaedics.

Outside of her professional role, Samantha loves being outdoors and staying active. Exercise is a constant in her life —it really helps her stay sane. She also enjoys gardening, hiking, and sailing with her fiancé.
For Samantha, it's been about the trust and faith people have put in her. She's had incredible support and encouragement, which has motivated her to keep growing and developing in this field. Now, she tries to give back by mentoring younger or newer colleagues and by joining committees like the Young and New Professionals through AAOE.
Flexibility and problem-solving are key qualities for success in healthcare. Healthcare is always changing, with new policies and laws coming into effect. Samantha strives not to jump to conclusions. Instead, she assesses and processes the facts, and if she’s unsure, she reaches out to peers or does some research to find the solution.
Vero Orthopaedics ensures patients have smooth access to orthopedic care by making it easy for patients to schedule appointments by calling or booking online. If they have an urgent need, they can walk in without an appointment. For non-urgent matters, they guarantee same-day appointments if contacted before 3 pm.

At OM, we've seen firsthand how the right approach can lead to more referrals and long-term success. Growth Starts When Marketing and Operations Work Together
BY MARI DIAZ
After working with hundreds of practices for over 20 years, one thing is clear, the most successful practices are the ones where marketing and operations work together, not separately. Behind every thriving office is more than just great care. It’s a team that communicates, understands the vision, and moves in the same direction. In healthcare, especially when you’re trying to grow your referrals or expand your reach, marketing and operations can no longer work in silos. When these two departments are aligned, the resultsarepowerful.Whenthey’renot,eventhebestcampaignsandsystemscanfallflat.
Marketing brings the visibility, awareness, and messaging. Operations handles the patient experience, the internal processes, and the delivery of services. But if your marketing team is promoting same-day appointments and your front desk is booking two weeks out, there’s a disconnect that will cost your reputation. If your practice is offering services to employers or new patient programs, and your internal team doesn’t know how to manage those referrals, the result is missed opportunities and confusion. And confusion leads to loss of trust.

Too often, practices hire a marketing team or agency to bring in patients without involving the operations team in the plan. Or, operations is asked to execute a process that was never communicated clearly. That’s where things start to fall apart.
Instead, make it a priority to bring both sides to the table. From the very beginning, marketing and ops should be aligned on the message, the goals, and the internal systems needed to support the strategy. Marketing should understand the practice’s capacity, scheduling, and pain points.
Operations should understand what’s being promoted, to whom, and what the patient or referral source is expecting. When both sides communicate regularly, solve problems together, and plan as one team, marketing becomes more effective and operations become more efficient.
That’s when real growth happens. That’s how you build a strong reputation that reflects what your practice truly offers and delivers.
If you’re working to grow, start here. Get marketing and ops on the same page. Every campaign, every call, every patient experience will be stronger for it.

WHY VIDEO MARKETING IS ESSENTIAL FOR ORTHOPEDIC PRACTICES
In today’s digital age, video marketing has become one of the most powerful tools for orthopedic practices. It’s not just about keeping up with trends—it’s about staying connected with your audience, building trust, and driving growth in your practice. Here’s why video marketing is so valuable and how it can benefit your orthopedic practice.
ThePowerofVideoMarketing
Video marketing allows orthopedic practices to communicate more effectively with potential and current patients. Through videos, you can simplify complex medical information, showcase your expertise, and make a lasting impression on viewers. Videos have the ability to humanize your practice, making it more approachable and relatable, which is crucial in healthcare.
KeyBenefitsofVideoMarketing
Building Trust: Videos help patients feel more comfortable with your practice before they even step through the door. By seeing and hearing from the doctors themselves, patients are more likely to feel a personal connection, which builds trust and confidence in your services
Enhancing Patient Education: Educational videos allow you to explain medical conditions and treatments in a clear and engaging way. This not only empowers patients with knowledge but also positions your practice as a reliable source of information.
Boosting Patient Referrals: Satisfied patients who see educational and testimonial videos are more likely to share them with others. This organic sharing can lead to an increase in patient referrals, helping your practice grow.
Improving Online Visibility: Search engines and social media platforms favor video content, making it easier for potential patients to find your practice online. Videos can significantly boost your SEO efforts, driving more traffic to your website.
TypesofVideosDoctorsShouldCreate
To build an effective video marketing strategy, consider creating the following types of videos:
Physician Introduction Videos: These videos help potential patients get to know the physicians in your practice. By creating individual introduction videos for each physician, you can establish authority and build trust.
Educational Videos: Create videos that explain relevant conditions and treatments. These should mirror the informative conversations you have with patients daily. Separate videos for conditions and treatments work best, as patients often research both.
Patient Testimonials: Showcase patient experiences through testimonials. The most compelling testimonials tell a story, highlighting the patient’s journey before and after treatment, providing social proof of your expertise.

Beyondthesecommontypes,considercreating:
Physician FAQ Videos: Address frequently asked questions to help patients feel more informed.
Practice Tours: Give potential patients a virtual tour of your practice to make them feel more comfortable.
VideoAds: Utilize platforms like Facebook, YouTube, or even traditional TV to reach a broader audience.
Videos for Email Marketing: Personalize your communication by including videos in your emails.
Recruitment Videos: Attract top talent by showcasing your practice’s culture and values.
CommonVideoMistakestoAvoid
When diving into video marketing, avoid these common pitfalls:
Low-Quality Audio: Poor audio quality can deter viewers, so invest in a good microphone.
Poor Lighting: Ensure your videos are well-lit to enhance their visual appeal.
Unnecessarily Long Videos: Keep videos concise and engaging, especially when introducing your practice or physicians.

LackofDistributionPlan: Ensure your videos reach their target audience by having a clear distribution plan across your website, social media, and email campaigns.

THE REFERRAL GROWTH PLAYBOOK FOR ORTHOPEDIC PRACTICES
BY MARI DIAZ
It’s not enough to be a great doctor or have a beautiful office. If the right people don’t know who you are, what you offer, and how to refer to you, you’re missing out on consistent patient referrals. The good news? Marketing works when it's done right— and growing your referrals starts with a strong, well-rounded marketing plan.
Here’s a clear guide to the marketing strategiesthatorthopedicpracticesneedto focusoniftheywanttogrow:
BOOTS-ON-THE-GROUND MARKETING (IT STILLWORKS)
Face-to-face, relationship-driven marketing is still one of the most effective ways to build trust and increase referrals. Having someone who represents your practice out in the community —visiting primary care doctors, urgent care centers, chiropractors, pain management clinics, and others—makes a huge difference. This kind of marketing builds real relationships. It shows that your practice is reliable, responsive, and committed. A good rep or liaison brings referral pads, answers questions, provides updates on your services, and keeps your name top of mind. This is how practices grow: by being present.
A STRONG MARKETING TEAM BEHIND THESCENES

You need a dedicated marketing team— whether in-house or external—that understands healthcare and how to position your practice. Yourteamshouldbehelpingwith:
Marketing strategy 1. Targeted outreach 2. Consistent branding 3. Community engagement 4. Follow-up with referral sources 5. Tracking results 6.
Marketing is not something you do once and forget. It’s ongoing. Having a team that is constantly working to build your visibility, manage your reputation, and keep communication strong with referring providers is essential.
DIGITALMARKETINGTHATPUTSYOUONTHEMAP
Patients and providers alike go online first. If your website doesn’t show up—or if it doesn’t look professional—you’re already losing referrals. Yourdigitalmarketingshouldinclude:
A clean, fast, mobile-friendly website
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) so patients can find you on Google
Google Ads and local targeting for specific services
Online appointment booking for convenience
Educational content so patients feel informed and trust you
Regular blog posts and updates to keep your site active and relevant
Don’t underestimate the power of digital reach. It helps you get discovered, builds credibility, and keeps your practice growing even when you're not face-to-face.
VIDEOMARKETINGTHATBUILDSTRUSTINSTANTLY
Video makes your practice more human. It helps patients get to know you before they even walk through the door—and it helps referring doctors feel more confident about sending their patients your way.
The most impactful videos for orthopedic practicesinclude:
Meet the doctor videos
Office walkthroughs
Patient testimonials
Treatment explanations
What to expect before and after surgery
Use these across your website, YouTube, social media, emails, and even in presentations to referring doctors. They make a lasting impression and answer the questions people didn’t even know they had.
SOCIALMEDIATHATEDUCATESANDENGAGES
Social media is a free way to stay in front of your community, referral sources, and even future patients. It’s not about being trendy—it’s about being helpful, consistent, and real.
You don’t need to post every day, but you do need a strategy. Share:
Educational posts about orthopedic conditions 1.
Quick recovery tips 2.
Behind-the-scenes team moments 3.
Patient stories (with permission) 4.
Practice updates and new services 5.
DON’TFORGETEMAILMARKETING
Email is still a powerful tool when used the right way. Stay connected with your referral sources, past patients, and local providers through a monthly newsletter or regular updates.
Youcanuseemailto:
Introducenewprovidersorservices1.
Sharepatientsuccessstories2. Invite them to lunch-and-learns or community events 3.
Provide educational content that’s actually useful 4.
It keeps your practice in their inbox—and in their mind.
MEASUREWHAT’SWORKING
Your marketing team should be tracking every part of your referral flow. Who’s referring? What marketing efforts are leading to more patients? What’s falling flat? When you know what’s working, you can double down. When something isn’t, you can adjust. That’s how real growth happens—by being smart, consistent, and strategic.
THEBOTTOMLINE

Done right, social media helps build a connection, reminds people you’re here, and builds trust—without feeling like an ad.
Orthopedic practices that grow their referrals don’t just sit back and wait for patients to show up. They show up themselves—with a smart marketing plan, a strong presence in the community, and the right team to support it all.
It’snotonething—it’sthemix: Boots-on-the-ground. Strongdigitalpresence. Powerfulvideomarketing. Realrelationships. Andateamthatkeepsthemomentumgoing.
That’s how you grow referrals. That’s how you build a practice that stands out.

How Can You Maximize Growth with New Reimbursement Rates for Florida Physicians Accepting Workers' Comp?
The workers' compensation landscape has changed dramatically in recent years, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. With more adjusters, risk managers, and case managers working remotely— often from home or out of state—orthopedic practices face new challenges in maintaining and growing their referral networks. In this new environment, effective marketing is not just an option; it’s a critical necessity. With over twenty years of experience and deep industry relationships, OM Marketing is here to help your practice navigate these changes and thrive.
WhatIstheChangingLandscapeofWorkers'Compensation?
The Florida Legislature recently passed a bill that will significantly impact how much physicians can charge for treating workers' compensation patients. Set to take effect on January 1, 2025, this legislation increases the maximum reimbursement allowances for physicians from 110% to 175% of Medicare rates for most services and from 140% to 210% for surgical procedures. This increase is a game changer for physicians, offering a substantial financial incentive to accept more workers' compensation cases. It’s an exciting time, as this could attract more physicians to the field, enhancing the overall quality of care for injured workers.
WhyIsMarketingCritical?
Being part of a workers' compensation network has never guaranteed referrals, and in today’s remote work environment, it’s become even more challenging. Adjusters and employers are spread out across the country, making it harder to maintain the personal relationships that lead to consistent referrals. To stand out, your practice needs more than just network participation—you need a strong, proactive marketing strategy. This is where OM Marketing comes in. With over two decades of experience in the workers' compensation industry, OM has empowered hundreds of physicians to become the go-to doctors for employers seeking the best care for their injured workers. WorkComp Ready Certified doctors are highly sought after by employers, and OM is the leader in marketing and understanding the nuances of this market better than anyone. Our deep-rooted relationships with key players across the country allow us to keep your practice top-of-mind with adjusters, employers, and carriers, no matter where they are.
Why Is the OM WorkComp Ready Certification the Gold Standard?
Did you know? One of the best ways to differentiate your practice in the workers' compensation field is by obtaining the WorkComp Ready certification, an exclusive program offered only to OM Marketing clients. This certification is recognized as the gold standard in the industry, signaling to employers and carriers that your practice meets the highest standards of care and communication.
The WorkComp Ready program is designed to ensure that your practice is fully equipped to handle the complexities of workers' compensation cases. This includes comprehensive training on the workers' compensation process, from accurately completing DWC-25 forms to understanding critical concepts like Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI) and work restrictions. The program also emphasizes the importance of effective communication with adjusters, employers, and case managers, which is crucial for providing top-tier care and achieving positive outcomes for injured employees.
What Are the Best Practices You Can Integrate Into Your Practice?
Here are some tips to make the most of the upcoming reimbursement increases and effectively integrate workers' compensation into your practice:
Prompt Patient Care: Ensure that injured employees are seen within 24 to 48 hours of receiving the referral, ideally on the same day. Prompt care sets the tone for the entire treatment process and is highly valued by employers and carriers.
AccurateDocumentation: During each visit, the treating physician should thoroughly complete all sections of the DWC-25 form. This includes providing a clear diagnosis, outlining the treatment plan, and specifying any necessary work restrictions. Avoid vague entries like “Work as tolerated” or “No Change,” as employers rely on detailed documentation to make informed decisions about accommodating work restrictions.
Clearly Specified Work Restrictions: All work restrictions must be clearly detailed on the DWC-25 form, with a specific explanation of why they are necessary. This clarity ensures that both the employer and the injured employee understand the limitations and the next steps in the recovery process.
Effective Communication: Open lines of communication between physicians, adjusters, and employers are essential for helping injured employees return to work as quickly and safely as possible. This collaboration ensures that injured employees receive the best possible care and can return to their pre-injury level of function promptly.
WhyIsOMMarketingYourBestPartnerforGrowth?
Navigating the complexities of the workers' compensation system can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. Diversify Your Practice with Workers' Compensation: A Smarter Path to Stability and Growth
BY OZZY DIAZ
At OM, we’ve worked with practices across the country that share a common challenge: depending heavily on one type of referral or payer source. When a practice is built around a single stream of business, any disruption—whether due to policy shifts, reimbursement changes, or volume fluctuations—can impact financial stability.

That’s why we encourage providers to strengthen their foundation through diversification. One of the most effective ways to do that is by integrating Workers’ Compensationintoyourpractice.
WHY WORKERS’ COMPENSATION?

ANTONIO PRIMO SAW A GAP IN CARE —AND BUILT A COMPANY TO FILL IT
When it comes to durable medical equipment, few companies demonstrate the level of dedication, compassion, and hands-on service that Compequip Solutions LLC delivers. Founded by Antonio Primo, Compequip Solutions has become a trusted provider throughout the entire state of Florida, known not only for its wide inventory of durable medical equipment (DME) but for its commitment to supporting injured workers throughout the workers’ compensation process.
What sets Compequip apart isn’t just what they deliver—it’s how they deliver it. With a deep understanding of the challenges injured workers face, Antonio and his team have built a company rooted in compassion, responsiveness, and personalized care. In this interview, OM Magazine sits down with Antonio to learn more about his journey and the mission behind Compequip Solutions.
OM Magazine: Antonio, can you tell us a little about your background and what inspired you to launch Compequip Solutions?
AntonioPrimo: I started working in healthcare at 18 years old with a physician group and spent seven years there, eventually moving into upper management. During that time, I became very familiar with the workers' compensation industry and realized that most DME companies focused primarily on Medicare and commercial insurance. Workers' compensation was often overlooked or treated as secondary. I saw the need and the opportunity to create a DME company that would specialize in this space and provide the kind of attention and service injured workers truly deserve. That’s how Compequip Solutions was born.
OMMagazine: What is the mission and vision behind Compequip Solutions?
AntonioPrimo: Our mission is simple—treat injured workers with compassion, provide superior service to case managers and adjusters, and ensure the DME process is seamless from start to finish. Our vision is to act as an extension of the case management and claims team, helping ensure injured workers get the right equipment, quickly and professionally, while easing the administrative burden for everyone involved.
OM Magazine: What do you believe sets Compequip apart from others in the industry?
Antonio Primo: We are laser-focused on the workers’ compensation space. That alone makes a huge difference. We understand the specific timelines, regulations, and documentation needs, and we’re set up to respond accordingly. We keep a large stock of equipment on hand and offer same-day delivery by licensed technicians whenever possible. Most of our team has been with us for over a decade, and their experience, continuing education, and commitment to care are what make the difference.

Antonio Primo Founder & CEO, Compequip
Antonio Primo: We recognize that these individuals are going through a major life disruption. It’s not just about dropping off equipment—it’s about understanding their condition, their fears, and their goals for recovery. Many of our cases are not one-time deliveries. Workers’ compensation is typically a long-term process, so we build relationships with each injured worker and support them through every stage of their journey. That level of care and consistency goes a long way in helping them feel supported.
OM Magazine: How can case managers, adjusters, or providers connect with Compequip Solutions?
AntonioPrimo: We're always available to help. You can reach us by phone at (888) 590-0002, or by email at aprimo@compequip.net or referrals@compequip.net. Whether you have a question, a referral, or just want to learn more about how we work—we’re here to support you.
With a mission grounded in compassion and a reputation built on reliability, Compequip Solutions continues to raise the bar for durable medical equipment providers in the workers' comp space. Antonio Primo’s commitment to quality, responsiveness, and people-first service ensures that Compequip is not just a vendor— butatruepartnerincare.

RESTORING MOTION, RESTORING LIVES
A Conversation with Kazlene Seide of ERMI
We're excited to chat with Kazlene Seide, District Manager and Medical Sales Leader at ERMI. Kazlene is passionate about helping people recover faster from injuries and get back to their normal lives. ERMI specializes in at-home devices that help restore motion in joints like shoulders, knees, and elbows. Kazlene will share how ERMI got started, their mission, and the unique benefits of their products. We'll also learn why adjusters and case managers should consider ERMI for their patients. Let's get to know Kazlene and the amazing work ERMI is doing!
CAN YOU DESCRIBE WHAT ERMI DOES AND THE CORE SERVICES/PRODUCTSYOUOFFER?
We help physicians, adjusters and nurse case managers who are frustrated when an injured worker may need a secondary, motionrestoring surgery; when they have been in therapy for more visits than a normal recovery protocol; when they have hit a plateau in their range of motion rehabilitation. We treat motion-loss in shoulder, knee, ankle, elbow, forearm, wrist or great toe by deploying an athome device for the patient to use every day to restore their range of motion and accelerate their recovery. By using the Ermi Flexionater or Extensionater daily, the patient is breaking up scar tissue that is holding them back and preventing them from returning to work.
WHAT ARE ERMI'S VISION, MISSION, VALUES, AND CULTURE?
Our mission is to help individuals accelerate the recovery of motion loss due to joint stiffness and return them to full human performance.
WHYSHOULDADJUSTERSANDCASEMANAGERSCHOOSE ERMI? WHAT UNIQUE BENEFITS DO YOUR PRODUCTS/SERVICESPROVIDE?
We have treated more than 150,000 patients and have greater than 90% success in restoring range of motion and preventing secondary surgery within 90 days time. Compared to alternative devices, we are saving about $8,600 per patient. Visit our website to see the data.
HOW DOES ERMI HELP FACILITATE A FASTER RETURN TO WORKFORINJUREDWORKERS?
By implementing the Ermi Flexionater or Extensionater at home, it allows the injured worker to stretch the affected joint every day, thus accelerating recovery. They are out of therapy faster; they are placed at MMI faster; they are back to work faster.

Kazlene Seide
District Manager and Medical Sales
Leader

whether the physicians’ recovery philosophy is low and slow or high intensity to create the change in the joint capsule, we can tailor the stretch to your desire. Our devices are “sit and stretch” meaning your patients will not have to apply or wear an uncomfortable or heavy device for hours at a time - just a few 10 minute stretch sessions per day will get them back to work quickly! Accelerating the recovery of an injured worker means you’ll save money on many more months of therapy, other company’s sometimes 8-10 month brace rentals, which means even more lost wages and sometimes another surgery.

ONLUX LED THERAPY
A Non-Invasive, At-Home Solution for Pain Relief and Recovery
As part of an independent review conducted by OM, feedback was collected from patients using OnLux LED Therapy during their recovery from orthopedic injuries. This review was done in partnership with several of OM’s clients and providers, with the goal of understanding how red and infrared light therapy is being used to support patients during recovery.
OnLux is a lightweight, wireless device that uses red and infrared light to help reduce inflammation, relieve muscle and joint pain, and support the body’s natural healing process. What patients appreciated most was how easy it was to use. Many shared that they were able to incorporate the device into their daily routine while walking around the house, working at a desk, or relaxing, without needing to stop what they were doing. Comfort and portability came up often in the feedback. Patients described the sessions as soothing, with a gentle warming sensation that made the experience feel more like self-care than medical treatment. Several noted that it helped them manage pain more effectively throughout the day, especially during flare-ups or after activity. Others shared that using OnLux regularly helped them rely less on over-the-counter medications. Patients also pointed out how simple the device was to use. The fact that it was wireless, rechargeable, and easy to operate made it more convenient and more likely to be used consistently. That consistency, they said, made a real difference in how they felt. Reported benefits included reduced soreness, better flexibility, and improved comfort overall.
This review is based on patient surveys collected through independent research conducted by OM Marketing. While individual experiences may vary, the overall response was positive. OnLux LED Therapy is a safe and convenient tool that many patients found helpful in managing orthopedic pain at home. For orthopedic professionals looking for effective, patient-friendly options that support healing and improve outcomes, OnLux stands out as a product worth paying attention to.

CRYON-X
Advanced Cold, Heat, and Compression Therapy for Post-Operative Recovery
As part of an independent review conducted by OM, patients who used the Cryon-X device during recovery from orthopedic procedures were invited to share their experiences. This review was completed in partnership with several of OM’s clients and providers to better understand how multi-therapy devices like Cryon-X are supporting post-operative care and recovery. Cryon-X is a portable therapy system that delivers cold, heat, contrast, and compression therapy in one streamlined unit. Patients responded positively to the flexibility of the device, especially the ability to adjust temperature and compression levels to meet their personal comfort needs. Many reported that these features helped them manage pain, reduce swelling, and feel more in control of their recovery process. The user-friendly design was also highlighted in the feedback. Patients noted that setup and operation were straightforward, thanks to clear instructions and an intuitive interface. The iceless cooling function stood out as a major advantage, allowing for consistent cold therapy without dealing with melting ice, dripping water, or the discomfort of extreme cold. The device’s quiet operation made it easier to integrate into daily life without disruption.
Portability played an important role in how often the device was used. Weighing just five to six and a half kilograms, Cryon-X was light enough to carry from room to room, which made it easier for patients to stay on track with regular treatment sessions. That convenience, combined with the comfort it delivered, helped support more consistent therapy and better recovery experiences. This review is based on survey responses collected through independent research led by OM Marketing. While individual results can vary, the feedback reflected a consistent theme. Cryon-X is a thoughtfully designed recovery tool that helps orthopedic patients manage discomfort and stay active in their recovery from home. For providers looking to recommend trusted, patient-centered technology, Cryon-X offers a practical and effective option that supports outcomes and improves the patient experience.

Occupational Heat Exposure: Risks, Treatment, and Prevention
BY CHIKITA MANN
Every year, dozens of workers suffer from heat exposure in the workplace, and tragically, some even lose their lives. Whether indoors or outdoors, during any season, hazardous heat can pose serious risks. It is crucial to understand the factors contributing to heat illness, recognize symptoms, and implement preventive measures.

What is Heat Illness?
As temperatures rise, a worker’s core body temperature may also increase. The body naturally responds by increasing heart rate and inducing sweating to regulate temperature. However, when these mechanisms fail to prevent excessive heat buildup, heat illness occurs. It’s essential to recognize and respond promptly to symptomstopreventmedicalemergencies.
Types of Heat Illness
Heatillnessesspanaspectrum, fromminorheatcramps to life-threatening heat stroke. Early intervention reduces the risk of severe outcomes. Training workers to recognize symptoms and take immediate action is vital. Employers must prioritize worker safety by ensuringprotectionfromhazardousheat.
RecognizingHeatIllness
Early intervention is critical. If you notice any of the following symptoms, act promptly:
HeatStrokeWarningSigns:
Abnormal thinking or behavior
Slurred speech
Seizures
Fainting
Heavy sweating or hot, dry skin
ImmediateActions:
Call 911 immediately.
Cool the worker with water or ice.
Move them to a cooler or shaded area.
Stay with the worker until help arrives.
OtherHeatIllnessSymptoms:
Headache or nausea
Weakness or dizziness
Elevated body temperature
Thirst
Decreased urine output
RecommendedActions:
Provide cool water to drink.
Remove unnecessary clothing.
Relocate to a cooler area.

OccupationalRiskFactors
Both the work environment and specific tasks contribute to heat exposure risks:
EnvironmentalFactors:
Temperature and humidity levels
Proximity to heat sources
Direct sunlight exposure
Work-RelatedFactors:
Length of time near heat sources
Physical exertion
Personal protective equipment (PPE) that affects heat dissipation
PreventionStrategies
A comprehensive heat stress program includes:
RiskAssessment:
Evaluate workplace conditions and identify high-risk areas.
Implement preventive measures based on risk levels.
LimitHeatExposure:
Schedule work during cooler hours.
Rotate tasks to minimize continuous exposure. Provide rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
ReduceMetabolicHeatLoad:
Adjust workloads during extreme heat. Encourage hydration and proper nutrition.
Acclimation:
Gradually expose workers to heat to build tolerance.
Training:
Educate workers on heat stress symptoms and emergency procedures.
Remember, preventing heat-related illnesses is everyone’s responsibility. By prioritizing safety, we can protect workers and create healthier workplaces.

Let’s Talk About Physician Burnout
Burnout has become a growing topic in healthcare, and for good reason. More physicians are speaking openly about the mental, physical, and emotional toll that long hours and constant pressure can take. But this shift in awareness is opening doors to something powerful: a renewed focus on wellbeing, fulfillment, and balance.
Burnout doesn’t mean someone is failing. It’s a natural response to sustained stress and a sign that something needs to shift—whether in daily routines, expectations, or support systems.
Burnout can show up in different ways. For some, it feels like emotional exhaustion or loss of motivation. For others, it might look like reduced focus, irritability, or feeling disconnected from the meaning behind the work.
None of these feelings are uncommon— andtheydon’thavetobepermanent.

Physicians are often expected to keep going, to show up strong, and to care deeply every single day. But the truth is, caring for others starts with caring for yourself.
When you feel rested, supported, and healthy— mentally and physically—you’re better equipped to bring your best to the work you do. Even small shifts can lead to real changes in energy, mindset, and resilience.
You don’t need to make major life changes to start feeling better. In fact, consistency with small, intentional actions can often make the biggest difference.
Build short pauses into your day. A few minutes between patients or before heading home can help your mind reset.
Stay physically active. Regular movement, even in small doses, can relieve stress and support your overall health.
Make room for rest. Quality sleep is foundational. Prioritize it when and where you can.
Connect with people who get it. Whether it’s a colleague, a mentor, or a friend, having someone to talk to can make a hard day feel less heavy.
Honor your limits. Saying no isn’t weakness—it’s wisdom. Boundaries protect your energy and your time.
Recognize progress. Reflecting on the moments that went well can help restore a sense of purpose and accomplishment.
Wellness isn’t just a personal effort—it’s something that grows stronger in supportive environments. Teams that prioritize respect, open communication, and shared understanding tend to foster better outcomes for both staff and patients. When physicians feel seen and supported, they’re more likely to stay engaged, connected, and fulfilled.
Burnout is real—but so is recovery. The path forward may look different for everyone, but it always starts with awareness, honesty, and small, meaningful steps. Taking care of yourself isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. And it’s one of the best investments you can make, not just for your career, but for your life.

The Silent Sufferers WHY MEN'S HEALTH NEEDS A REVOLUTION
BY NELSON GONZALEZ
Think of a man. Now, picture him not as the invincible rock of a bygone era, but as a complex being, riddled with vulnerabilities he often hides beneath a stoic mask. This is the reality for many men: a world where physical and mental health concerns simmer beneath the surface, often ignored until they erupt in a crisis. This needs to change. Men's health is not a niche concern; it's a societal imperative with ramifications that touch every aspect of our lives. From the boardroom to the blue-collar job site, men are often expected to be the unsinkable ships, weathering storms without a whimper. This ingrained cultural narrative of masculinity discourages open conversations about health, leading to a crisis in prevention and early detection. In the realm of risk management and worker’s compenstation, the consequences of this silence are profound. Untreated health issues lead to increased workplace accidents, absenteeism, and a diminished quality of life for both the injured worker and those who depend on them. We, the very professionals tasked with safeguarding workplace well-being, often fall victim to the same silence, neglecting our own health and unknowingly jeopardizing not only our own lives, but thelivesofthosewhodependonus.
Consider the statistics: Men die at a younger age than women from nearly every leading cause of death, including heart disease, cancer, and suicide. Mental health issues like depression and anxiety, though increasingly acknowledged, are still under-diagnosed and under-treated in men. The stoic facade often masks these internal struggles, delaying intervention and potentially devastating outcomes.
This isn't just about individual well-being; it's about the domino effect impacting families and communities. A father struggling with untreated depression might inadvertently neglect his children's emotional needs. A husband battling chronic pain might become withdrawn from his spouse, creating a chasm in their relationship. The ripple effects can be devastating.
In the risk management and worker’s compenstation landscape, ignoring men's health translates to higher costs and diminished productivity. Untreated chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease can lead to on-the-job injuries or exacerbate existing ones. Mental health issues can affect focus, decision-making, and overall safety. This creates a vicious cycle –poor health fuels workplace issues, and workplace stressors negatively impact health.
So how do we break this cycle? The answer lies in a multi-pronged approach. First, we need a cultural shift. We need to redefine masculinity as something more than just physical strength and stoicism. Openly discussing health concerns, seeking help when needed, and prioritizing wellbeing – these are not signs of weakness, but hallmarks of strength and responsibility.
Second, healthcare systems need to be more men-friendly. Many men feel uncomfortable with traditional healthcare settings, often perceiving them as judgmental or lacking in understanding of their specific needs. Creating male-focused clinics with knowledgeable staff and a welcoming environment can encourage early intervention.
Third, risk management and workers’ compenstaion professionals can play a crucial role. By incorporating men's health awareness into workplace safety programs, promoting healthy lifestyle choices, and offering mental health resources, these professionals can become champions of preventive care for their workforce. Imagine a world where men are encouraged to take charge of their health, where seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Imagine workplaces that prioritize employee well-being and create a culture of openness around health issues. The economic benefits for companies would be significant, but more importantly, the human cost of neglected health would plummet.
This fight for men's health is not just for the men themselves. It's for their families, their friends, and the communities they hold together. It's about fostering healthy families, productive workforces, and a more vibrant society. 9 Key Lessons for a Healthier Life
BY MARI DIAZ
I first stumbled upon the incredible world of Blue Zones while watching an episode of 'Down to Earth with Zac Efron.' As someone deeply passionate about holistic wellness, this particular episode, where Zac explored a Blue Zone in Sardinia, Italy, was all I could talk about for months! If you know me, you know I'm obsessed with all things holistic wellness. As a master herbalist, I follow an Ayurvedic routine most of the time, though I'm not perfect, and I have my moments of falling off the wagon.
As I began to learn more about the Blue Zones and their secrets to longevity and well-being, my enthusiasm grew. The more I learned, the more I wanted to share this knowledge with anyone who would listen. So, I knew that I had to write about and share what the study concluded about the commonalities shared by all the Blue Zones. In this article, we break it all down in hopes of inspiring you to prioritize your health and well-being and spread the message of the Blue Zones.

1. Work Out Less and Move More
In Blue Zones, you won't find residents spending hours in gyms. Instead, they embrace active lifestyles by walking, tending to gardens, or pursuing physically demanding careers. Their secret is simple – stay active throughout the day. While we may not replicate their daily routines, we can adopt small changes like parking farther from entrances, taking stairs, or incorporating standing desks at work.
2. Find Your Purpose
Knowing your sense of purpose can add years to your life. It's about waking up with a reason, whether it's happiness, family, or a cause dear to your heart. If you're unsure, explore your human design, seek inspiration from your midheaven, or ask yourself, "What would make my life the happiest and most fulfilling?"
3. Relieve Stress
Stress is universal, but managing it effectively is key. Blue Zone residents have mastered stress relief through various routines – from ancestral remembrance to prayer, napping, or happy hour. We can incorporate practices like meditation, nature walks, affirmations, or simply connecting with loved ones to cope with stress.
4. Eat Consciously and Listen to Your Body
Blue Zone residents follow the 80% rule – they stop eating when they feel 80% full. This mindful approach promotes regular check-ins with the body to avoid overindulgence. They also eat their smallest meal in the late afternoon or early evening, followed by fasting. To follow suit, consider making breakfast and lunch your main meals, with a lighter dinner.
5. Incorporate More Plants into Your Diet
While not strict vegans, Blue Zone residents focus on vegetables and whole foods, with beans as a dietary staple. They consume meat sparingly, about five times a month, usually in small portions. Transitioning can start with Meatless Mondays or by integrating nutrient-dense vegetables and beans into your meals while listening to your body.
6. Drink a Glass of Wine Regularly – in Moderation
Moderate wine consumption is common in Blue Zones, offering potential health benefits from polyphenols and antioxidants. Remember, moderation is key, and it may not suit everyone, so consult a healthcare professional.

7. Practice Spirituality
Belonging to faith-based communities is a common thread in Blue Zones, providing a sense of purpose and connection. Attending faith-based services, reading spiritual texts, or joining like-minded groups can foster spirituality and enhance well-being.
8. Prioritize Family and Loved Ones
Centenarians in Blue Zones prioritize their relationships. Living near aging relatives can lower disease rates among children. Committing to a life partner can extend your life expectancy. Embrace these practices by staying in touch with loved ones and cherishing moments together.
9. Cultivate a Positive Social Circle
A strong, positive community is vital. Loneliness is detrimental to health, while supportive friendships contribute to well-being. Consider forming close-knit groups or spending time with people who share healthy habits and a positive outlook on life.
I hope this article has inspired you as much as exploring the BlueZones has inspired me. May their wisdom guide you toward a life filled with vitality, purpose, and lasting well-being. I wish you the joy of incorporating these valuable lessons into your daily life. Here's to a future of vibrant health, meaningful connections, and a truly fulfilling existence. Wishing you a life as beautiful and remarkable as the Blue Zones themselves.

What does maximum medical improvement (MMI) really mean?
BY RAVIINDER PARMAR, MD
After a workplace injury, workers’ compensation will pay for medical treatment for the injured employee up until they reach maximum medical improvement or MMI. What does it mean when a person reaches MMI? Does this mean that their medical treatment is finished? Does it mean that their condition won’t get any better?
What is MMI?
When a patient has reached MMI, this means that medical treatment is not expected to result in the continued improvement of the patient’s condition. Some states use the term “medically stationary” instead of MMI, indicating that the patient’s condition has reached a plateau. A patient who has reached MMI is medically stable, and doctors expect that their condition cannot be improved further by additional treatment.
Once a patient has reached MMI, the patient’s condition will be evaluated. If they have a disability at this point, it will be considered permanent. Legal and financial settlements will be negotiated based on the patient’s situation once they have reached MMI. For workers’ compensation benefits, reaching MMI is a huge milestone. At this point, the determination can be made of whether the patient is disabled (either partially or completely), and whether they have suffered a loss of future earning capacity. This will determine their eligibility for workers’ compensation benefits.
Does MMI mean that medical treatment is complete?
MMI does not necessarily mean that the patient doesn’t require any continued medical treatment, or that workers’ compensation will not cover the costs of that treatment. Some patients may need ongoing treatment in order to stay at the level of function that they currently have. A patient who has reached MMI is not expected to improve further but may require continued medical treatment in order to stay stable.
For example, if a patient develops chronic pain as a result of a workplace injury, they may require ongoing medical interventions, such as pain medications or injections, to continue dealing with that pain. A patient with a work-related lung disease such as silicosis may need medications, respiratory therapy, and even oxygen on an ongoing basis. Workers’ compensation benefits generally continue to cover medical treatment that is intended to keep the patient stable at the point of MMI.

DOES MMI MEAN
THAT THE PATIENT WON’T GET ANY BETTER?
Reaching MMI also does not always mean that the person cannot continue to heal. The determination that a patient has reached MMI is made when a patient has reached a plateau and is stable, but this doesn’t mean that further improvement is impossible. Some patients do experience additional improvements in their symptoms over time.
In general, if the patient does improve further after reaching MMI, it will be due to the body’s natural healing process over time, rather than to additional medical intervention. For example, a patient with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) may experience some degree of spontaneous improvement of their symptoms over time, even many years after the initial injury. The healing process is unpredictable by nature, and it’s impossible to know for sure that a particular patient will never get any better.

Raviinder Parmar, MD Board-Certified Specialist in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine
It’s important to recognize that the converse is also true. It’s possible for a patient’s condition to worsen significantly in the future, even after the determination was made that they had reached MMI. In certain cases, if this occurs, workers’ compensation benefits may be adjusted to account for the patient’s worsened condition. Whether this is possible depends on the specifics of the situation.
UNDERSTANDING DISTAL BICEPS TEARS IN WORKERS COMP: DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OPTIONS
BY ANAND PANCHAL, MD
Distal biceps tears are a significant concern, especially among workers engaged in physically demanding jobs. Such injuries can lead to considerable functional impairment and necessitate comprehensive management strategies. This article reviews the diagnosis and treatment options for distal biceps tears, particularly in the context of workers' compensationinjuries.
AnatomyandMechanismofInjury
The biceps brachii muscle, located in the upper arm, has two tendons at its distal end that attach to the radial tuberosity in the forearm. These tendons allow the biceps muscle to flex the elbow and supinate (rotate the hand into the palm up position) the forearm. A distal biceps tear involves the rupture of these tendons, often occurring when there is a sudden, forceful contraction of the muscle against a heavy load. (example is lifting a heavy tire or metal door with the armslightlyextended)
DiagnosisofDistalBicepsTears
Accurate and timely diagnosis is crucial for optimal recovery, especially for workers whose livelihoods depend on their physical capabilities. The diagnostic processinvolvesseveralsteps:
ClinicalEvaluation:
History: Patients typically report a sudden, sharp pain in the front of the elbow, often accompanied by a "pop" sound. Swelling, bruising, and weakness in elbow flexion and forearmsupinationarecommon.
Physical Examination: Key tests include:
Hook Test: The examiner attempts to hook a finger under the biceps tendon from the lateral side of the elbow. A positive test, where the tendon cannot be palpated, indicatesatear.
Biceps Squeeze Test: The examiner squeezes the biceps muscle belly while the forearm is supinated. A lack of forearm supination indicates a possible tear.
ImagingStudies:
X-rays: While not definitive for diagnosing tendon tears, X-rays can rule out fractures and other bonyabnormalities.
Ultrasound: An effective, noninvasive tool that can visualize the torn tendon and assess its retraction.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): The gold standard for confirming distal biceps tears, MRI provides detailed images of the soft tissues, showing the extent of the tear and retraction. This can extremely helpful in surgical planning.
Treatment
Options for Distal BicepsTears
Treatment strategies for distal biceps tears depend on the severity of the tear, the patient's age, activity level, and occupational demands. For workers' compensation cases, the goal is to restore function quickly and safely to facilitateareturntowork.

Non-SurgicalTreatment:
Non-surgical management may be considered for partial tears or in patients with low functional demands.
Rest and Immobilization: Initial immobilization in a sling or brace helps reduce pain and swelling.
Physical Therapy: Once the acute pain subsides, physical therapy focuses on gentle range-of-motion exercises, followed by strengthening exercises to restore function.
Limitations: Non-surgical treatment often results in decreased strength and endurance in elbow flexion and forearm supination, which can be problematic for physically demanding jobs.
SurgicalTreatment:
Surgical repair is the standard of care for complete distal biceps tears, especially for workers who require full arm strength and function.
Techniques:
Single-Incision Technique: This approach involves a single anterior incision to access and reattach the tendon to the radial tuberosity. It minimizes the risk of nerve injury and provides excellent cosmetic results.
Two-Incision Technique: This method involves an additional posterior incision to help secure the tendon. It may reduce the risk of heterotopic ossification but carries a higher risk of nerve damage.
PostoperativeRehabilitation:
Immobilization: The arm is typically immobilized in a brace for several weeks to protect the repair.
Physical Therapy: Gradual rehabilitation begins with passive and active range-of-motion exercises, progressing to strengthening exercises. The goal is to restore full function within 4-6 months.
Workers'CompensationConsiderations
For workers' compensation cases, several factors need to be addressed to ensure a successful outcome:
TimelyDiagnosisandTreatment:
Early recognition and intervention are critical to prevent long-term disability. Prompt surgical repair offers the best chance for a full functional recovery. Typically time from injury to surgery should be less than 2 weeks to maximize ability to perform a repair of the tendon.

Return-to-WorkPrograms:
Modified Duties: Initially, workers may need to perform modified duties that avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activities.
Gradual Return: A phased return-to-work program helps workers gradually resume their full duties, minimizing the risk of re-injury.
CommunicationwithStakeholders:
Employer Collaboration: Open communication with employers about the worker's progress and capabilities ensures appropriate job modifications and accommodations.
Insurance and Legal Considerations: Documentation of the injury, treatment, and rehabilitation progress is crucial for workers' compensation claims.
PsychosocialSupport:
Workers may experience stress and anxiety related to their injury and job security. Providing psychological support and counseling can aid in the overall recovery process.
PrognosisandLong-TermOutcomes
The prognosis for distal biceps tears is generally favorable with appropriate treatment. Surgical repair offers excellent outcomes, with most patients regaining near-normal strength and function. However, some patients may experience residual weakness or discomfort.
Long-termoutcomesareinfluencedbyseveralfactors:
Severity of the Tear: Complete tears with significant retraction may require more complex repairs and have longer recovery times.
Timing of Surgery: Early surgical intervention generally leads to better outcomes.
Rehabilitation Compliance: Adherence to physical therapy and rehabilitation protocols is crucial for optimal recovery.
Distal biceps tears are significant injuries that require a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment, particularly in the context of workers' compensation. Timely intervention, appropriate surgical techniques, and structured rehabilitation programs are essential for restoring function and facilitating a successful return to work. By addressing both the physical and psychosocial aspects of recovery, healthcare providers can support injured workers in achieving the best possible outcomes and maintaining their occupational capabilities.
