MY WORKERS' COMPENSATION

PHILOSOPHY
Carlos Ayestas
VP Client Relations, Priority Transportation & Language Services
My workers' compensation philosophy is rooted in empathy and understanding for injured workers during their vulnerable times. In providing transportation services, we bridge the gap for those who may not grasp the WC process, particularly non-English speakers. Our role as an ancillary provider is to facilitate appointments and support claim closure through consistent delivery on our commitments and transparent communication with clients and injured workers
Sandy Avina
Claims Services Manager, California Schools JPA (CSRM)
In workers' comp, we focus too much on the big ugly claims The claims where we suspect fraud and abuse take up so much of our mental space, but the majority of claims have happy endings! My workers' compensation philosophy is why aren't we spending more time talking about all of the Medical Only claims that are closed? Or all the employees who return to work full duty? These are success stories! As an industry, we need to take more time to celebrate the successes and show injured workers how proud we are that they achieved a successful recovery After all, isn't that the goal?

ied ida r to ers. ans dic es
Dr Hill's medical journey began at the University of Miami School of Medicine, followed by rigorous surgical internships and an orthopedic residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital His comprehensive training equipped him with the skills to handle a wide range of orthopedic issues in both adults and children. When asked about his specialty, Dr. Hill confidently stated, "Orthopedic Surgery " Over two decades, he has honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of the complexities involved in treating work-related injuries His philosophy is clear and patient-centered: "My intention is to get them back to their pre-injury level of function "
Dr Hill emphasizes the importance of communication in his practice "Good communication starts at the first visit," he explained. "We discuss what happened, their diagnosis, and the treatment plans. I want the patient leaving each visit with a clear idea of the treatment plan and the next step." This approach ensures that injured workers are well-informed and actively involved in their recovery process
Prioritizing a safe and efficient return to work is a key aspect of Dr Hill's treatment strategy "We discuss the nature of their injury, as well as the activities and requirements of their job," he shared "Even though they return to work, they may need to continue a treatment protocol " This thorough understanding helps tailor treatment plans that align with each worker's job demands while ensuring quality care
Dr Hill also stays informed of new technologies and treatments to enhance recovery "We offer PRP injections to appropriate candidates if other modalities have not produced the desired outcome," he said This innovative approach is part of his commitment to providing the best possible care
However, the workers' compensation system is not without its challenges "I would like to speed up the approval process for PT, MRIs, and surgical approvals," Dr Hill mentioned Streamlining these processes would significantly benefit injured workers by reducing delays in their treatment
For seamless communication with adjusters, employers, or nurses, Dr Hill ensures comprehensive and clear documentation "We have a dedicated Workers' Compensation liaison in both of our offices," he noted This dedicated support system enhances the coordination of care and facilitates efficient communication

OM, a company deeply rooted in the workers' compensation industry, has grown to become a national leader in connecting the best doctors with claims professionals Founded by Ozzy Diaz Sr and Mari Diaz in 2004, OM has continuously innovated and expanded its services, empowering physicians nationwide. At the heart of their approach is their dedication to being a reliable resource for employers, adjusters, and nurses In this interview, Ozzy Diaz, the Operations Director and son of the founders, gives us an inside look into the company ' s journey, its impact on the industry, and its future direction
Anailis Diaz: Hi Ozzy, thank you for joining us today Can you start by telling us a little about your role at OM and what you do here?
Ozzy Diaz: Absolutely, thank you for having me. Anailis Diaz: OM has a fascinating history. Can you share with us how the company started and what inspired its creation?
Ozzy Diaz: The story of OM began in 2004 when my parents, Ozzy Diaz Sr and Mari Diaz, discovered a significant communication gap between all the players involved in the care of injured employees Physicians were excellent in their field but often struggled with the paperwork involved in the workers' compensation system They made it their mission to bridge this gap and become the connecting link between doctors, employers, and insurance companies, empowering physicians to become the go-to specialists for employers looking for the best care for their injured workers.
Ozzy Diaz, Operations Director Mari Diaz, CEO & Founder
Anailis Diaz: How did your parents manage to establish OM as a leader in this field?
Ozzy Diaz: With dedication and strong ethics, OM quickly became the go-to for claims professionals seeking the best doctors who are the most qualified and understand the paperwork process needed when seeing injured workers Our rapid growth led us to establish the WorkCompReady™ certification in 2010, which provides education, training, and continuous support to hundreds of doctors. This certification and our OM Directory, at the time a print resource, became industry standards of excellence. By 2020, OM had expanded to become a national company and we launched our online directory, which is endorsed by many national employers and carriers who are looking for the best doctors This further solidified our presence in the industry
OMAnailis Diaz: OM also has the Bloom Awards Can you tell us about their significance in the industry?
Ozzy Diaz: The Bloom Awards, formerly known as the IN TOUCH Awards, were created in 2011 to recognize excellence in the workers' compensation industry For the past 13 years, these awards have celebrated the best professionals in the field and become a staple event in the workers' compensation community. The gala attracts over 200 adjusters, case managers, and risk managers nationwide, earning it the nickname "The Academy Awards" of the workers' compensation world Unfortunately, in 2020, we had to put our annual gala on hold due to Covid This year, we are excited to bring the gala back on December 11th at the Orlando Science Center. We can't wait to celebrate and see everyone come out!
Anailis Diaz: What changes did OM make in 2022 to further improve its services?
Ozzy Diaz: In 2022, we realized the need for better access to the WorkCompReady™ certification and a faster way for employers and adjusters to find certified doctors We spoke with clients and industry professionals to enhance our directory and training programs Additionally, we created the OM Best Doctors in Workers' Compensation list, recognizing doctors who are highly skilled and experienced in providing the best care available so patients can return to work safely
Anailis Diaz: How does OM empower physicians and their staff within the workers' compensation system?
Ozzy Diaz: OM empowers physicians by providing them with the necessary tools, training, and support to excel in the workers' compensation system Our WorkCompReady™ certification is the gold standard in the industry, offering comprehensive education and training to ensure doctors are well-versed in managing workers' compensation cases. By becoming WorkCompReady™ certified, physicians and their staff gain a deep understanding of the workers' compensation process, making them the go-to providers for employers looking for qualified specialists

Key Strategies for Supporting Workers' Compensation Adjusters
Working as a workers' compensation adjuster has its challenges, with the responsibility of managing numerous files across different jurisdictions without dedicated support staff. Employers and stakeholders play a vital role in supporting these adjusters to ensure their success By implementing specific actions, valuable assistance can be provided to significantly ease adjusters' workload and enhance their effectiveness
To support workers' compensation adjusters effectively, consider the following key actions:
1. Provide Complete and Detailed Information: When submitting a new claim, ensure all fields on the injury form are accurately filled out This includes relevant details such as social security numbers, birth dates, injury types, and dates of injury reporting By providing comprehensive and timely information upfront, you enable adjusters to initiate efficient investigations.
2. Report Claims Promptly: Timely reporting of claims is essential to avoid pressuring adjusters and minimize errors or leakage. Submit the injury report as soon as possible to facilitate thorough investigations and enable accurate decision-making without delays or penalties
3. Communicate Lost Time: Promptly inform adjusters if there is any lost time associated with the claim This information is crucial as it allows adjusters to gather relevant medical records, assess compensability, and facilitate the implementation of work restrictions
4. Respect the Adjuster's Role: While it's important to provide insights and relevant facts, remember that adjusters are trained professionals responsible for making determinations on compensability. Respect their expertise and decisionmaking authority to avoid potential fines and allow them to fulfill their responsibilities effectively.
5. Ensure Accessibility and Responsiveness: Be accessible and promptly respond to adjusters' inquiries As an employer, your cooperation is crucial in providing information and supporting adjusters in their investigations. Share relevant medical information, provider details, initial diagnoses, and any other relevant documentation for effective claims handling
By focusing on these key actions, employers can provide effective support to workers' compensation adjusters, ensuring smoother claims processing and improved outcomes.

Mental Health Challenges for Workers' Compensation Adjusters
Written by Sandy Avina
I remember the first time I cried as an adjuster I had just gotten off the phone with a woman whose husband had fallen two stories down an elevator shaft Miraculously, he survived the fall, but his injuries were the most significant I had seen I had received his claim a few weeks prior and had already started disability benefits and assigned a catastrophic case manager His wife had missed several days from work to be by his side at the hospital
They had a 6-month-old baby, and she had just returned to work a few weeks before his accident She was terminated for missing too many days from work and didn’t qualify for FMLA. “Is there anything else you can do to help us?” I explained the disability benefits, and that medical treatment would be covered, but I was afraid this was such a small and hollow offering against the enormity of her fears. She was sobbing. I could hear her baby crying in the background.
Behind every workers' compensation claim lies a hidden toll on the adjusters who, witnessing the aftermath of injury and disability for injured workers, face their own mental health battles arising from compassion fatigue
What is compassion fatigue?
People whose professions lead to prolonged exposure to other people's trauma can be vulnerable to compassion fatigue, also known as secondary or vicarious trauma; they can experience acute symptoms that put their physical and mental health at risk, making them wary of giving and caring (Psychology Today, 2024)
Why is it important?
Compassion fatigue affects our industry in two ways: First, claims adjusters already face tremendous demands in their jobs Our industry is struggling to recruit and retain the next generation of adjusters, which means adjusters in their current roles are likely facing high caseloads and understaffed departments. Adding compassion fatigue to the existing demands of the job is a recipe for burnout.
Second, the helplessness adjusters feel when they are handling particularly catastrophic injuries contributes to compassion fatigue Adjusters can become jaded, reducing their ability to empathize It’s not that adjusters want to be unfeeling, but many disengage as a self-preservation method This results in a poor experience for the injured worker, who relies heavily on an adjuster to provide communication, patience, and guidance as they navigate the challenges arising out of their disability
WHAT CAN WE DO?
Support from the industry
Third Party Administrators, insurers, and vendor partners have an opportunity to partner with non-profits and advocacy groups to identify and consolidate information on public resources: food banks, discounts on public transportation, free or low-cost mental health resources, free meals for children at public libraries, etc. Injured workers and their families often seek assistance from adjusters on how to deal with impacts from their disability that fall outside of the scope of workers’ compensation benefits Having a resource page on the company website will help prevent adjusters from feeling helpless when injured workers approach them with questions related to needs and support outside of workers’ comp This helps injured workers identify solutions for some of the challenges resulting from their disability.
Support for Claims Leaders
Claims leaders need to be trained on how to identify precursors to compassion fatigue and burnout among their adjusters Adjusters should be advised and encouraged to completely disconnect when they are off work Discourage adjusters from providing vendors, attorneys, clients and injured workers with their personal cell phone number Our industry is notorious for this practice, and it is not sustainable Claims leaders should be experts on their company ’ s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and reference it regularly in meetings with their team.
Support for Adjusters
Several claims training programs cover the statutory component of claims handling: calculating disability benefits, determining compensability, addressing disputes regarding treatment authorization, etc Here’s what’s missing: how to manage the social-emotional component of claims handling Do adjusters know how to handle a call when someone is crying? How about if someone mentions self-harm? If they are assigned a claim that deals with a particular trauma, they have experienced themselves, do they know they can have a conversation with leadership to discuss possible reassignment? These topics should be included in any comprehensive claims training program and provided as an annual refresher to all adjusters

Occupational Heat Exposure: Risks, Treatment, and Prevention
Written by Chikita Mann
Every year, dozens of workers suffer from heat exposure in the workplace, and tragically, some even lose their lives Whether indoors or outdoors, during any season, hazardous heat can pose serious risks It is crucial to understand the factors contributing to heat illness, recognize symptoms, and implement preventive measures.
What is Heat Illness?
As temperatures rise, a worker’s core body temperature may also increase. The body naturally responds by increasing heart rate and inducing sweating to regulate temperature. However, when these mechanisms fail to prevent excessive heat buildup, heat illness occurs It’s essential to recognize and respond promptly to symptoms to prevent medical emergencies
Types of Heat Illness
Heat illnesses span a spectrum, from minor heat cramps to life-threatening heat stroke Early intervention reduces the risk of severe outcomes Training workers to recognize symptoms and take immediate action is vital. Employers must prioritize worker safety by ensuring protection from hazardous heat.
Recognizing Heat Illness
Early intervention is critical If you notice any of the following symptoms, act promptly:
Heat Stroke Warning Signs:
Abnormal thinking or behavior
Slurred speech
Seizures
Fainting
Heavy sweating or hot, dry skin
Immediate Actions:
Call 911 immediately.
Cool the worker with water or ice.
Move them to a cooler or shaded area.
Stay with the worker until help arrives.
Other Heat Illness Symptoms:
Headache or nausea
Weakness or dizziness
Elevated body temperature
Thirst
Decreased urine output
Recommended Actions:
Provide cool water to drink
Remove unnecessary clothing.
Relocate to a cooler area.
Occupational Risk Factors
Both the work environment and specific tasks contribute to heat exposure risks:
Environmental Factors:
Temperature and humidity levels
Proximity to heat sources
Direct sunlight exposure
Work-Related Factors:
Length of time near heat sources
Physical exertion
Personal protective equipment (PPE) that affects heat dissipation
Prevention Strategies
A comprehensive heat stress program includes:
Risk Assessment:
Evaluate workplace conditions and identify high-risk areas
Implement preventive measures based on risk levels
Limit Heat Exposure:
Schedule work during cooler hours
Rotate tasks to minimize continuous exposure. Provide rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
Reduce Metabolic Heat Load:
Adjust workloads during extreme heat
Encourage hydration and proper nutrition
Acclimation:
Gradually expose workers to heat to build tolerance
Training:
Educate workers on heat stress symptoms and emergency procedures.
Remember, preventing heat-related illnesses is everyone ’ s responsibility By prioritizing safety, we can protect workers and create healthier workplaces

REIMAGINING CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME TREATMENT FOR BETTER OUTCOMES AND FASTER, SAFER RETURN TO WORK
PAUL PATERSON, MD
In a recent interview with Dr Paul Paterson, his dedication to improving patient outcomes and accessibility through same-day, ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel release became evident This innovative procedure is not only cost-effective but also has the potential to significantly improve patient outcomes and facilitate faster return-to-work times, making it truly game-changing.
"Patient care is always our primary goal," Dr. Paterson emphasizes. "Our ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel release procedure is designed to streamline care by compressingmultiplevisitsintoasingleone.Thismeans patients can be diagnosed and treated during their initial visit. Most return to light office work the next day and heavy-duty work within five days, thanks to the minimallyinvasivenatureofthisprocedure"
Employers have come to trust Dr. Paterson for his excellence in rapidly getting employees back to work. His approach eliminates the need for an electromyography (EMG) and avoids conservative treatments that merely address symptoms without solving the problem. "We aim to resolve the underlying issue effectively," he says. "This approach leads to less frustration for injured workers and significantly better long-term outcomes."
The success rate of his method speaks volumes. "Ninety percent of patients who undergo ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel release return to work within 10 days, and less than five percent require therapy afterward," Dr. Paterson reports. "This high success rate not only benefits patients but also reduces long-term care costs by 50-75%."
Accessibility to treatment is a cornerstone of Dr Paterson's practice "We offer virtual preoperative evaluations, allowing patients to receive an initial consultation from home," he explains. "Patients can access treatment within one week of contacting us, ensuring they don’t endure prolonged discomfort or disruptions to their daily lives."
Creating a comfortable patient experience is also a priority "When performing this procedure in the office, we strive to create a spa-like setting," Dr Paterson notes "Patients can eat before the procedure, drive themselves to and from the appointment, and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere with their choice of music and dimmed lights This makes the experience significantly different from traditional surgeries."
Dr Paterson's dedication extends beyond his local practice He sees injured workers from all over Florida and even accepts out-of-state patients Practicing at Vero Orthopaedics, he specializes in comprehensive care for injuries and conditions affecting the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder His range of advanced treatments includes total shoulder and elbow replacement, trigger finger release, thumb implant replacement, shoulder, elbow, hand, and wrist fracture care, tendon and nerve laceration repair, and minimally invasive arthroscopic elbow surgery.
For employers, adjusters, and nurses, understanding the benefits of this procedure is crucial. Ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel release offers superior patient outcomes, rapid return-to-work success, and long-term cost mitigation. This innovative approach significantly reduces downtime, allowing employees to resume their duties more quickly and effectively
Dr Paterson’s passion for helping patients is clear "The best part of my work is meeting and assisting incredible people," he says with a smile "Seeing the relief and improvement in their lives is truly rewarding "
Dr Paterson's commitment to patient-centered care is evident through his frequent hosting of free educational seminars and screenings, where employers can learn about ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel release Employers unfamiliar with this groundbreaking procedure are encouraged to reach out to Ozzy Diaz to schedule an in-service session. This opportunity provides a deeper understanding of the procedure’s advantages and how it can revolutionize the treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome for their workforce.

QWhat are the most common causes of foot pain and how can they be treated effectively?
Most commonly overuse or certain injuries can lead to foot pain that can impact portions of the foot or even the entire foot There can also be underlying health issues that can impact circulation and nerves that can also lead to foot pain It is very beneficial to follow up with your foot and ankle specialist in order to learn more about how to manage the foot pain, as well as providing at-home care and prevention Many causes of foot pain can be managed with rest, icing, medication (one of my favorites is menthol rubs with Vicks VapoRub due to the menthol and camphor properties), wearing proper shoe gear, and, if there is any injury causing the foot pain, treating the injury correctly and following up with your healthcare provider.
QHow can I prevent common foot problems like plantar fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain Plantar fasciitis is very difficult to treat and, even when treated successfully, it can return Basic prevention would include rest Since plantar fasciitis is caused by inflammation and irritation, staying off of your feet can be helpful Avoid high-impact activities initially Warming up and gently stretching will provide and maintain that plantar fascial band stretched so that the inflammation and discomfort do not recur Stretching is key Do not forget to warm up prior
Wearing the correct shoes and good arch support also aid in preventing recurrence of plantar fasciitis I always recommend avoiding walking barefoot Limit certain sandals and flip-flops because there is no arch support provided Many of these types of custom-made orthotics are the ones that I recommend due to the fact that they are built to last many years and are made to your foot type and foot shape At the first sign of any discomfort, please try to get early care so that your healthcare provider/foot and ankle specialist can prevent the problem from progressing
QWhat are some common workplace factors that contribute to foot injuries and how can they be prevented?
In order to reduce foot injuries, you need to first identify and address the relevant hazards in the workplace Then, you need to take the appropriate steps to eliminate those hazards through the job or workplace design, various measures of protection such as safety shoes that are slip resistant or steel-toed work boots aiding in slip and falls and crush injuries in the workplace, practicing good maintenance and housekeeping, keeping the workplace area free of clutter, always cleaning up spills promptly, and one of the most important aspects is to be observant of your work area Try not to be distracted and not be in a hurry
QCan you recommend exercises or stretches that can help strengthen the feet and ankles to reduce the risk of workplace injuries?
Strengthening and improving range of motion of the foot and ankle can help reduce injuries Warming up prior to stretching is key. Stretching exercises increase flexibility and allow the muscles to work more effectively due to increased blood flow
Some examples would include:
Ankle circles - Be sure to make the circles with the ankle in clockwise and counterclockwise directions to achieve the most benefit.
Heel stretching - This can be done with an elastic band or a towel around the top of the foot and gently pulling back until you feel a light stretch in the calf and heel area
Calf raises - Keeping the ankles in neutral position and standing with the feet slightly apart, slowly lift both heels off the ground
Single leg balance - Standing on one foot, bending the knee slightly, and hold for 15 to 20 seconds
If you do not have much balance in the beginning, make sure you hold onto a countertop or against the wall. Again, remember to always warm up before stretching and exercising, and utilize appropriate shoe gear These are just some examples of stretching exercises that provide the most significant benefit to the feet and ankles

Severe Injuries
Cases involving catastrophic injuries such as traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), Spinal cord injuries, amputations, multiple body parts injured or fractured These injuries often require longer and extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation leading to long-term or permanent disability
Multiple or Conflicting Medical Opinions
Cases could be complicated when there are differing medical opinions about the cause, extent, or treatment of the injury Disagreements between treating physicians cand lead to disputes that require legal intervention
Pre-existing Conditions
If the injured worker has pre-existing medical conditions that aggravated or exacerbated by the work-related injury, it can be challenging to determine the Major Contributing Cause of such findings, therefore it could affect the appropriate level of compensation and employer’s liability
Handling Complex Workers' Compensation Cases: Best Practices and Insights
Written by Jadell Mendez
A complex workers’ compensation case is typically characterized by combination of factors that make it more challenging to resolve than a straightforward claim In the intricate world of workers' compensation, straightforward cases can often become convoluted due to various factors To better understand the topic, I would like to present some of the elements that could contribute to the complexity of these workers’ compensation cases
Occupational Diseases
Those cases that involve occupational diseases like Asbestosis, Repetitive stress injuries, hearing loss, etc are often complex because these conditions typically develop over time and providing a direct link to the workplace can be difficult
Psychological Injuries
Claims involving psychological or psychiatric conditions including PTSD, depression, anxiety can be difficult to substantiate and treat Also, in occasions these claims require expert testimony and can be contentious and costly to the carrier
Return to Work Issues
Complications arise when there are disputes about the injured worker’s ability to return to work or the availability of a temporal or permanent modified position provided by the employer
Disputed Claims
Cases where the employer or insurer disputes the occurrence of the injury, the extent of the disability, or the causation can lead to prolonged legal battles
Fraudulent claims or allegations of fraud also fall into this category
Third-Party Involvement
Thorough Investigation and Documentation
The foundation of a successful workers' compensation case is a meticulous investigation Begin by gathering all pertinent details about the incident, including witness statements, accident reports, and any available video footage Documentation should be comprehensive and precise, capturing every detail related to the injury, medical treatments, and communications with the employee
From the medical case management position, completing a throughout assessment, including prior medical history, current medical issues and ongoing medical treatment, obtaining a medical record release to request prior medical records could be an important key to determine compensability and cost containment of future medical care
A detailed investigation not only helps in understanding the case better but also ensures that you have a strong factual base to counter any disputes that may arise In complex cases, where the cause of injury or the extent of disability might be contested, having robust evidence can be the difference between a favorable outcome and a protracted battle.
Effective Communication with all parties involved
Complex workers' compensation cases often involve multiple stakeholders, including the injured employee, medical professionals, insurance adjusters, and legal representatives Establishing clear and consistent communication channels is crucial Ensure that all parties are kept informed about the case ' s progress and any developments
When a third party is responsible for the injury like a subcontractor or equipment manufacturer the case can become more complex due to additional legal claims and potential for litigation against multiple parties
Multiple Jurisdictions
The case could be complicated if the worker was injured while working in different states or countries, determining the appropriate jurisdiction and applicable laws
Successfully navigating these complex cases requires a blend of strategic planning, effective communication, and a deep understanding of the legal landscape. Here are some best practices and insights for handling these challenging scenarios.
Regular updates can prevent misunderstandings and help in managing expectations For the injured employee, timely and empathetic communication can alleviate some of the stress and uncertainty associated with their situation, fostering a sense of trust and cooperation.
Coordinated Medical Management
Injuries that result in long-term or permanent disability require careful medical management Work closely with medical providers to ensure that the injured employee receives appropriate and timely treatment Comprehensive medical documentation is essential, as it forms the basis for determining the extent of the injury and the corresponding compensation
Consider involving a medical case manager to oversee the treatment plan and coordinate between different healthcare providers This can help in ensuring that the employee follows through with the treatment, attends necessary appointments, and adheres to prescribed rehabilitation protocols
Proactive Return-to-Work Programs
Facilitating a return-to-work program can significantly benefit both the employer employee Develop a structured pl accommodates the employee’s medical re and gradually transitions them back to the duties This not only helps in reducing th compensation costs but also supports the em physical and psychological recovery
Flexibility is key in return-to-work program the duties to match the employee's capabilities and be prepared to make adjus they recover Engage with the employee medical providers regularly to monitor pro make necessary modifications
Continuous Education and Training
Keeping up to date with the latest develop workers' compensation laws and best pr essential for handling complex cases effectively Regular training sessions for HR professionals, managers, and supervisors can enhance their understanding of the intricacies involved and prepare them to respond appropriately.
Partnering with Experienced Legal Counsel
Given the potential legal complexities, having an experienced workers' compensation attorney can be invaluable Legal counsel can provide critical guidance on navigating the procedural nuances and help in developing a strong legal strategy
In cases involving severe injuries or long-term disabilities, legal expertise is particularly crucial. These situations often require detailed medical evidence and expert testimony, which can be challenging to compile without specialized legal knowledge
Handling complex workers' compensation cases requires a proactive, well-coordinated approach By focusing on thorough investigation, effective communication, legal expertise, coordinated medical management, proactive return-to-work programs, and continuous education, participants can navigate these challenging cases more efficiently Ultimately, the goal is to ensure fair and timely compensation for the injured employee while minimizing the impact on the organization
Consider participating in industry seminars, workshops, and online courses to stay informed about emerging trends and regulatory changes Building a network of professionals in the field can also provide valuable insights and support.

Understanding Distal Biceps Tears in Workers Comp: Diagnosis and Treatment Options
Distal biceps tears are a significant concern, especially among workers engaged in physically demanding jobs Such injuries can lead to considerable functional impairment and necessitate comprehensive management strategies This article reviews the diagnosis and treatment options for distal biceps tears, particularly in the context of workers' compensation injuries
Anatomy and Mechanism of Injury
The biceps brachii muscle, located in the upper arm, has two tendons at its distal end that attach to the radial tuberosity in the forearm These tendons allow the biceps muscle to flex the elbow and supinate (rotate the hand into the palm up position) the forearm. A distal biceps tear involves the rupture of these tendons, often occurring when there is a sudden, forceful contraction of the muscle against a heavy load (example is lifting a heavy tire or metal door with the arm slightly extended)
Diagnosis of Distal Biceps Tears
Accurate and timely diagnosis is crucial for optimal recovery, especially for workers whose livelihoods depend on their physical capabilities The diagnostic process involves several steps:
Clinical Evaluation:
History: Patients typically report a sudden, sharp pain in the front of the elbow, often accompanied by a " pop " sound Swelling, bruising, and weakness in elbow flexion and forearm supination are common
Written by Anand Panchal, MD
Physical Examination: Key tests include:
Hook Test: The examiner attempts to hook a finger under the biceps tendon from the lateral side of the elbow A positive test, where the tendon cannot be palpated, indicates a tear.
Biceps Squeeze Test: The examiner squeezes the biceps muscle belly while the forearm is supinated A lack of forearm supination indicates a possible tear.
Imaging Studies:
X-rays: While not definitive for diagnosing tendon tears, X-rays can rule out fractures and other bony abnormalities
Ultrasound: An effective, non-invasive tool that can visualize the torn tendon and assess its retraction
Magnetic Resonance
Imaging (MRI): The gold standard for confirming distal biceps tears, MRI provides detailed images of the soft tissues, showing the extent of the tear and retraction This can extremely helpful in surgical planning
Treatment Options for Distal
Biceps Tears
Treatment strategies for distal biceps tears depend on the severity of the tear, the patient's age, activity level, and occupational demands For workers' compensation cases, the goal is to restore function quickly and safely to facilitate a return to work
Non-Surgical Treatment:
Non-surgical management may be considered for partial tears or in patients with low functional demands.
Rest and Immobilization: Initial immobilization in a sling or brace helps reduce pain and swelling
Physical Therapy: Once the acute pain subsides, physical therapy focuses on gentle range-of-motion exercises, followed by strengthening exercises to restore function
Limitations: Non-surgical treatment often results in decreased strength and endurance in elbow flexion and forearm supination, which can be problematic for physically demanding jobs
Surgical Treatment:
Surgical repair is the standard of care for complete distal biceps tears, especially for workers who require full arm strength and function.
Techniques:
Single-Incision Technique: This approach involves a single anterior incision to access and reattach the tendon to the radial tuberosity It minimizes the risk of nerve injury and provides excellent cosmetic results.
Two-Incision Technique: This method involves an additional posterior incision to help secure the tendon It may reduce the risk of heterotopic ossification but carries a higher risk of nerve damage
Postoperative Rehabilitation:
Immobilization: The arm is typically immobilized in a brace for several weeks to protect the repair.
Physical Therapy: Gradual rehabilitation begins with passive and active range-of-motion exercises, progressing to strengthening exercises The goal is to restore full function within 4-6 months
Workers' Compensation Considerations
For workers' compensation cases, several factors need to be addressed to ensure a successful outcome:
Timely Diagnosis and Treatment:
Early recognition and intervention are critical to prevent long-term disability. Prompt surgical repair offers the best chance for a full functional recovery.
Typically time from injury to surgery should be less than 2 weeks to maximize ability to perform a repair of the tendon
Return-to-Work Programs:
Modified Duties: Initially, workers may need to perform modified duties that avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activities.
Gradual Return: A phased return-to-work program helps workers gradually resume their full duties, minimizing the risk of re-injury
Communication with Stakeholders:
Employer Collaboration: Open communication with employers about the worker's progress and capabilities ensures appropriate job modifications and accommodations
Insurance and Legal Considerations: Documentation of the injury, treatment, and rehabilitation progress is crucial for workers' compensation claims.
Psychosocial Support:
Workers may experience stress and anxiety related to their injury and job security Providing psychological support and counseling can aid in the overall recovery process.
Prognosis and Long-Term Outcomes
The prognosis for distal biceps tears is generally favorable with appropriate treatment Surgical repair offers excellent outcomes, with most patients regaining near-normal strength and function However, some patients may experience residual weakness or discomfort.
Long-term outcomes are influenced by several factors:
Severity of the Tear: Complete tears with significant retraction may require more complex repairs and have longer recovery times
Timing of Surgery: Early surgical intervention generally leads to better outcomes.
Rehabilitation Compliance: Adherence to physical therapy and rehabilitation protocols is crucial for optimal recovery
Distal biceps tears are significant injuries that require a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment, particularly in the context of workers' compensation. Timely intervention, appropriate surgical techniques, and structured rehabilitation programs are essential for restoring function and facilitating a successful return to work By addressing both the physical and psychosocial aspects of recovery, healthcare providers can support injured workers in achieving the best possible outcomes and maintaining their occupational capabilities

Tennis Elbow: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
Written by Eric Balaguer, MD
Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis, is a painful condition affecting the outer part of the elbow Despite its name, it's not exclusive to tennis players. Anyone who repeatedly uses their forearm muscles, especially in activities involving gripping and wrist extension, can develop this condition.
CAUSES
Tennis elbow is primarily caused by overuse and repetitive strain of the tendons that attach the forearm muscles to the outer bony bump of the elbow Microscopic tears develop in the tendon due to this repetitive strain, leading to inflammation and pain
Common activities that can trigger tennis elbow include:
Racquet sports (tennis, squash, badminton)
Golf
Painting
Carpentry
Plumbing
Repetitive computer mouse use
SYMPTOMS
The hallmark symptom of tennis elbow is pain or burning on the outer part of the elbow The pain may worsen with gripping objects, twisting motions, or lifting
Other symptoms may include:
Weakened grip strength
Stiffness in the elbow
Pain radiating down the forearm
DIAGNOSIS
A doctor can typically diagnose tennis elbow through a physical examination and a discussion of your symptoms and activities They may also perform tests to rule out other conditions that can cause similar symptoms, such as arthritis or nerve compression.
TREATMENT
In most cases, tennis elbow can be effectively treated with non-surgical methods 80% of patients will have the symptoms resolve on their own within 6 months
These may include:
Rest: Avoiding activities that exacerbate the pain is crucial for allowing the tendon to heal.
Ice: Applying ice packs to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and pain.
Pain relievers: Over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen or naproxen can help manage discomfort
Physical therapy: Specific exercises can help strengthen the forearm muscles and improve flexibility, aiding in the healing process
Bracing: Wearing a brace around the forearm can help reduce strain on the affected tendons
Corticosteroid injections: In some cases, injecting corticosteroids into the affected area may be recommended to reduce inflammation but will not be beneficial to heal the tendon and, in most circumstances, once the cortisone wears off, the symptoms recur.
Regenerative Medicine: Platelet Rich Plasma, Amniotic Fluid and Stem cell injections are being used effectively to treat this condition.
PRP Injection: PRP is derived from a patient's own blood, which is processed to concentrate platelets Platelets are rich in growth factors that play a crucial role in tissue healing and regeneration Injection is very painful for several days
Amniotic Fluid Injection: Amniotic fluid, the fluid that surrounds and protects a developing fetus, contains growth factors, cytokines, and other substances that can promote tissue repair and regeneration
Reduce inflammation: Amniotic fluid contains anti-inflammatory cytokines that can help calm the immune response and reduce pain
Stimulate tissue repair: Growth factors in amniotic fluid can encourage the growth of new cells and tissues, promoting healing.
Modulate scar tissue formation: Amniotic fluid may help prevent the formation of excessive scar tissue, which can impair tissue function.
Stem cell injection: Stem cells are unique cells that have the ability to differentiate into various cell types, potentially promoting tissue repair and regeneration
Cost is very high
Invasive
If conservative treatments fail to provide relief, surgery may be considered
SURGICAL OPTIONS:
Tenex: Ultrasound Guided ECRB tenotomy
Tenex is a minimally invasive procedure that utilizes ultrasonic energy to break down and remove damaged tissue within the tendon, leaving healthy tissue intact.
Success rate documented between 85-95%
Can be done in the office under local anesthesia
Shockwave Therapy:
Non-invasive treatment option for tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) It involves delivering highenergy sound waves to the affected area to stimulate healing and reduce pain
The shockwaves create microtrauma in the tissue, which triggers the body's natural healing response This process increases blood flow to the area, promotes the formation of new blood vessels, and stimulates the production of collagen, a key protein for tissue repair.
Shockwave therapy usually requires multiple sessions (3-5) for optimal results
Open Release of ECRB tendon Origin/Tendon Lengthening
Open surgical procedure to release or lengthen the ECRB tendon
Success rate 80-90%
Long recovery period
Tennis elbow is a frequent condition, which is very hard to treat. The key to this condition is complete healing of the ECRB tendon. Many times, this is very difficult to achieve. Most time it requires a combination of all the available treatment and significant amount of time for the tendon to fully heal and the pain completely resolves.

40 One-Sentence Self-Care Tips
Written By Mari Diaz
I’ve written a lot about self-care over the years There is always more to be said on the topic because I see people not taking care of themselves, and it breaks my heart In my own life, self-care has given me clarity, stability, and a deeper connection with myself. It allows me to be more creative, refuels my energy, and gives me access to more possibilities for living the life I want.
So, in case you need a little reminder to keep making time for yourself, here are 40 onesentence prompts to help you prioritize selfcare! Keep blooming, friends!
1 Self-care is about finding practices that help you stay balanced and healthy – mentally, physically, and emotionally
2 An important act of self-care is standing up for your energy and time when other people are asking too much of you
3 Setting boundaries can sound intimidating, but it will give you the freedom to spend time doing what you love
4 Following your heart is an act of self-care
5 Listening to your intuition is an act of self-care
6 Don’t avoid the things that make you feel better
7 Making time for yourself in the morning will help the rest of your day run more smoothly
8. The way you talk to yourself manifests in everything you do.
9. Instead of asking yourself why you ’ re so lazy, ask yourself why you might need so much rest. - Dr. Emily Anhalt
10. Burnout happens when you avoid being human for too long
11 You'll show up as the truest version of yourself when you prioritize what you need
12 You deserve to do what’s best for you
13 If self-care makes you feel lazy, you might not have found the right self-care method for you
14 Get clear on why you want to make self-care part of your lifestyle so you can’t make excuses to get out of it
15 Don’t deplete your emotional, mental, and physical energy on something that doesn’t align with your values
16 Sometimes all you need is a few moments to recuperate from a setback, and other times you need a whole day to recover; both are okay
17 If you don’t want to do something, you don’t need to justify your decision to anyone
18 Instead of worrying about being consistent, focus on being resilient with your actions so you can get back on track when you ’ re ready.
19. Take a break before you think you need it.
20. Recognize the difference between self-care, selfsabotage, and self-soothing.
21 Small efforts will add up over time
22 When you ’ re clear with your boundaries and make every effort to stick to them, you reflect back to yourself that your needs are important
23 Showing up for yourself often means not showing up for everything and everyone else
24. Make two self-care lists: a list of things that sustain you when you have high energy, and a list of things that keep you regulated when you feel low.
25. You don’t have to keep pushing yourself to do more.
26. Keeping commitments to yourself is the ultimate act of self-care.
27 Instead of trying to change all of your habits at once, start by setting one self-care goal for yourself and do what you can to stick to it
28 Under any circumstance, always do your best, no more and no less
29 Don’t get swept into the marketing side of self-care that’s solely focused on selling you a product
30 To take care of ourselves from the inside out, we need to focus on what we actually need, not what other people tell us we need
31 All self-care activities and behaviors are learnt from others and are influenced by the external environments in which people live and work
32 Whatever is causing you discomfort, you get to decide if you are going to accept it or find a way to change it
33 Prioritize your support system and get comfortable asking for help.
34. True self-care involves sacrifice, honesty, community, and a commitment to making choices in your best interest.
35. The soul usually knows what to do to heal itself; the challenge is to silence the mind.
36. Make time for self-care in the “fringe hours” - the pockets of time between meetings, projects, and chores that often get wasted
37 Get away from social media regularly so you can listen to what you really want
38 When you ’ re trying to decide whether or not to do something, ask what would make life easier or better for your future self
39 Let yourself take up as much space as you need in this world
40 Don’t break the most important promise - a promise to yourself

WHAT’S IN FRONT IS GREATER THAN WHAT’S BEHIND YOU
Written by Licia Thompson
Life’s path can take unforeseen turns, transforming a straightforward journey into a complex and challenging adventure These detours bring new opportunities and invaluable lessons, contributing to your personal and professional growth. By staying adaptable, you can forge a more fulfilling and resilient path to success
As your read my message, I want you to remember: What’s in front is greater than what’s behind You
Each person ' s journey is unique, but this truth remains: your future holds greater potential than your past You may wonder how this is possible, so let me tell you right away Clearly, your past doesn’t define you, though some have been told or just assume that when challenges arise, your best is always what you had before your personal challenges
Here’s why I totally disagree
Reflecting on my childhood, I recall that the end of August always brought a sense of sadness Despite the heat and humidity in Cincinnati, the end of summer meant shorter days and the return to school I worried about the unknowns new teachers, classes, and friends I imagined endless possibilities that were never rooted in any proven facts I stored all the “possibilities of what would happen during the first week of school in my memory. As an introverted child, I followed rules without question, doing what adults told me I silently wondered what would be told to me weeks before school reopened from elementary through high school It wasn’t until after college graduation that I began to consider what wasas compared to what could be
Can you recall a pivotal time in your life when you analyzed your daily existence? Have you wondered if you were missing out on something greater? Perhaps you haven’t yet figured out your true purpose
Are You Ready to Dare to Dream?
Does the thought of visualizing what could be feel unrealistic or overwhelming to you? Are you stuck in the same place in your life because you fear the uncertainties of change? While you secretly desire more, do you tell yourself, "It's ok, it could be worse?” Have you considered that disappointment from past attempts to make changes may have kept you in routines that no longer serve you well or perhaps they never did
True Growth and Leadership Require You to:
Embrace the Unexpected: Personal growth happens in the curves, hills, and valleys of life Straightforward paths might seem easy but can also be quite dull. Remember, what’s ahead is greater than what’s behind.
Redefine Your Journey: Leverage the wisdom you ’ ve gained through your entire life; personal and professional, and begin to take calculated risks to create a future that excites you
Reach out to a coach or mentor today to life vision An objective expert can p perspectives, boosting your confide bold, intentional steps forward gu enable you to WIN in whatever way yo define winning.

Can ADHD Be A Superpower?
AN INTERVIEW WITH MARI DIAZ
Written by Anailis Diaz
As Mari and I chat over coffee, we find ourselves laughing about how we can't even stay on track with the interview because we keep getting sidetracked by a hundred other topics at once Our conversations tend to jump around quite a bit, but that's just how we operate We always joke, 'We'll figure it out!' There's nothing we can't do we ' re always up for whatever comes our way, haha!
But circling back to today's interview, I'm really glad I convinced Mari to share her story She's been sharing pieces of it, but not quite in this interview format it's deeply personal and incredibly empowering.
Mari Diaz is an entrepreneurial powerhouse. She has founded several thriving companies, including OM Marketing, OM Directory, MD Apothecary, The Self Love Club, Bloom Collective (a community for women in workers' compensation), Eight, Bloom & OM Magazine, The Orange Lab, and ME, Inc , a women ' s wellness and self-love retreat As a certified Master Herbalist and Face Yoga Instructor, Mari brings her expertise to all aspects of her work She is a mentor to many and is passionate about helping others focus on self-love, self-care, wellness, entrepreneurship, career, relationships, and friendships
Recently, Mari shared a deeply personal part of her journey her late-life diagnosis of ADHD Diagnosed just a few months ago, this revelation has added a new layer to her already impressive story In our conversation, Mari opened up about how this diagnosis has transformed her understanding of herself and her mission.
Reflecting on her life, Mari shared how she always felt different. Her mind was a whirlwind of ideas, her energy boundless, and her ability to juggle multiple projects was both a gift and a challenge. Despite these traits, she built an empire, often feeling like she was constantly battling an invisible force The ADHD diagnosis was a revelation, providing clarity and a sense of understanding that had eluded her for years
"Suddenly, everything made sense, " Mari said "The struggles, the strengths, the way my brain works all of it It was like finding the missing piece of a very complex puzzle "
Instead of seeing her ADHD as a hindrance, Mari now views it as her superpower. The same qualities that posed challenges her relentless energy, her ability to think outside the box, and her rapid-fire thinking are the very traits that have fueled her success. "I've learned to embrace my ADHD," she said "It makes me who I am, and it’s been a big part of why I've been able to achieve so much I love the way my brain works "
Mari's story is part of a larger narrative about successful women with ADHD Research shows that many highachieving women share similar experiences, using their unique cognitive styles to become leaders and innovators. Mari is a proud advocate of this perspective, championing the idea that ADHD can be a source of strength and empowerment
In our conversation, Mari really emphasized the importance of community and support She pointed out how much she values resources like "ADHD for Smart Ass Women," a book that's completely changed the game for women navigating ADHD With her close circle of friends and family who really understand her, Mari finds endless inspiration she's always sharing new ideas with us, often daily! Sometimes we have to rein her in, but that never stops her; she dives in headfirst and we catch up later, but we love her for it She's incredibly proud of how OM's and Bloom's journey has unfolded OM started as a small marketing firm in 2004 but has grown to become the first choice for employers, adjusters, and case managers seeking top doctors for their injured workers Meanwhile, The Bloom Community is growing, and its magazine readership is rapidly expanding nationally.
She smiles and adds with a touch of humor, "Oh, and we ' re even launching a new magazine! But yes, looking back on it all " Reflecting on this journey, Mari grins and says, "I'm incredibly proud of how OM, The Bloom Magazine, and The Bloom Community have really blossomed! (No pun intended.) Whether it's connecting employers with top physicians or empowering women in the workers' comp industry, every milestone we reach fills my heart with gratitude Beyond the numbers, Mari sees The Bloom Community as a safe haven where women can feel heard, supported, and empowered for whatever life throws their way, whether they have ADHD or not "The Bloom Community means the world to me, " she shared warmly. "It's all about creating a space where every woman can thrive and find her strength, no matter her journey "
Mari also highlighted the significant challenge many women face due to undiagnosed or misunderstood ADHD: "Too many women live with reduced expectations and let life pass them by because they haven’t learned how to zero in on their strengths and work with their ADHD brain "
She shared that she is currently developing a master and writing a book on practical strategies for coping ADHD, which she believes has been transformativ her She wants to share these insights with other wo because she firmly believes ADHD is not a limitation a superpower.
Her experiences illustrate how ADHD's perceived constraints can actually enhance creativity and lead to remarkable achievements "ADHD has taught me to harness my strengths and turn them into superpowers, " she said
Mari's journey is about more than just accepting neurodiversity it's about celebrating it She demonstrates that authenticity fosters deep connections and impactful work With her diverse background, exceptional business acumen, and unwavering dedication to women ' s wellness and self-love, Mari Diaz is a true inspiration. She continues to motivate others to pursue their dreams while advocating for the importance of self-care and embracing one ' s unique identity.
"Too many women are undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, or diagnosed and then told to lower their ambitions as a result," Mari passionately added "Once I realized this shocking truth, I made it my mission to change the conversation around this condition I firmly believe that I’ve achieved success in life because of my ADHD, not despite it "
Looking at Mari, I see a woman who has turned what some may see as a challenge into an incredible source of strength Her journey of embracing her neurodiversity and using it to fuel her success is not just inspiring it's a powerful reminder that our differences are what make us extraordinary Being authentically yourself is soulnourishing. So go ahead, dance like nobody’s watching in your fabulous gowns, ladies, and let's channel that fearless Mari energy

Your Guide To A Grounding Bath Ritual
Written By Mari Diaz
Taking the time to cleanse your body and mind from the day is one of the most important acts of self-care you can embrace. One of my favorite ways to achieve this is through a grounding bath ritual. This practice allows me to reconnect with myself and let go of any negative energy I’ve picked up throughout the day The warm water, soothing scents, and intentional moments of peace create a sanctuary where I can truly unwind and reset
There are countless ways to personalize this ritual to make it uniquely yours. You might add your favorite essential oils, surround yourself with candles, or bring a book to read while you soak. The key is to make it a cherished part of your routine, something you look forward to and rely on for comfort and grounding.
For me, this ritual has become a beloved escape, a way to nurture my body and spirit. It’s a simple, yet profound way to practice self-care, shedding the stresses of the day and emerging refreshed and reconnected. Whether it’s a quick 20 minutes or a luxurious hour, this grounding bath ritual is a gift you give to yourself, one that brings balance, peace, and a sense of renewal.
PREPARING YOUR SPACE
Create a Tranquil Environment: Choose a time when you won't be disturbed. Dim the lights, light some candles, and play soft, calming music to set a peaceful mood. 1 Clean and Declutter: Ensure your bathroom is clean and free from clutter to allow for a clear mind and focused ritual. 2.

Herbs: Dried herbs like sage, rosemary, or lavender add grounding and protective qualities
Crystals: Grounding stones such as black tourmaline, hematite, or smoky quartz can be placed around the tub or held during the bath
CREATING THE RITUAL
2.
2
Gratitude: When you feel ready, slowly stand up and express gratitude for the earth and the water, thanking them for their support and healing energy
Rinse and Refresh: Rinse off with cool water to close your pores and invigorate your senses, symbolizing washing away the last remnants of negative energy
3
Grounding Activities: After your bath, engage in grounding activities such as walking barefoot on grass, meditating, or journaling about your experience
1. Prepare the Bath: Fill your tub with warm water. As the water runs, add a cup of sea salt or Epsom salt, a few drops of essential oils, and a handful of herbs
3
Set Your Intention: Before starting, take a moment to set a clear intention for your bath, such as releasing stress, reconnecting with yourself, or finding peace and calm.
Mindful Entry: Step into the bath mindfully, feeling the warmth of the water and the soothing sensation as it envelops you
DURING THE BATH
Relax and Breathe: Close your eyes and take deep breaths Focus on your breath and imagine roots growing from your body, connecting deeply with the earth below
Visualization: Visualize the water absorbing any negative energy, stress, or anxiety, cleansing and purifying it
Affirmations: Repeat grounding affirmations to yourself, such as “I am stable and secure, ” “I am connected to the earth,” or “I release all that does not serve me. ”
Incorporating a grounding bath ritual into my self-care routine has been incredibly impactful. Using simple, natural ingredients and setting mindful intentions has allowed me to create a calming and healing space that brings balance and inner peace. Consistency and sincerity have been key. Making grounding baths a regular part of my self-care has helped me feel more connected, calm, and resilient in facing life’s challenges

Written by Melissa Diaz
Anxiety can be hard to manage It’s unpredictable; anxiety can range from something that is manageable when implemented with certain coping mechanisms, to a debilitating phenomenon that affects one ’ s everyday life Anxiety doesn't discriminate based on age, gender or race. In fact, it affects millions of people each day. In this article we are going to look at 11 ways you can use natural remedies to help decrease your anxiety.
DRINK A CUP OF TEA
Most anxiety sufferers are not aware that anxiety is often a result of dehydration To combat this, drink plenty of water and make sure to stay hydrated throughout your day However, if you find yourself still feeling anxious or unable to concentrate, try drinking an anxiety relief tea like Chamomile iced tea, Mint tea or Valerian Root Tea

A hot bath not only helps relax the muscles and release tension in the body, but it also has anxiety relief benefits as well Adding different oils, like lavender oil, provides anxiety soothing properties and essential oils that are known for their anxiety fighting abilities such as peppermint.
GET ENOUGH SLEEP
When anxiety is at its worst, there's nothing better than a good night of sleep to help you get back on your feet again Make sure that you are getting an adequate amount of sleep each day so that anxiety doesn't have a chance to take hold and keep you up all night long

The Silent Sufferers WHY MEN'S HEALTH NEEDS A REVOLUTION
Written by Nelson Gonzalez
Think of a man. Now, picture him not as the invincible rock of a bygone era, but as a complex being, riddled with vulnerabilities he often hides beneath a stoic mask. This is the reality for many men: a world where physical and mental health concerns simmer beneath the surface, often ignored until they erupt in a crisis. This needs to change. Men's health is not a niche concern; it's a societal imperative with ramifications that touch every aspect of our lives. From the boardroom to the blue-collar job site, men are often expected to be the unsinkable ships, weathering storms without a whimper This ingrained cultural narrative of masculinity discourages open conversations about health, leading to a crisis in prevention and early detection In the realm of risk management and worker’s compenstation, the consequences of this silence are profound Untreated health issues lead to increased workplace accidents, absenteeism, and a diminished quality of life for both the injured worker and those who depend on them We, the very professionals tasked with safeguarding workplace well-being, often fall victim to the same silence, neglecting our own health and unknowingly jeopardizing not only our own lives, but the lives of those who depend on us
Consider the statistics: Men die at a younger age than women from nearly every leading cause of death, including heart disease, cancer, and suicide Mental health issues like depression and anxiety, though increasingly acknowledged, are still under-diagnosed and under-treated in men The stoic facade often masks these internal struggles, delaying intervention and potentially devastating outcomes.
This isn't just about individual well-being; it's about the domino effect impacting families and communities A father struggling with untreated depression might inadvertently neglect his children's emotional needs A husband battling chronic pain might become withdrawn from his spouse, creating a chasm in their relationship The ripple effects can be devastating
In the risk management and worker’s compenstation landscape, ignoring men ' s health translates to higher costs and diminished productivity Untreated chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease can lead to on-the-job injuries or exacerbate existing ones Mental health issues can affect focus, decision-making, and overall safety This creates a vicious cycle –poor health fuels workplace issues, and workplace stressors negatively impact health.
So how do we break this cycle? The answer lies in a multi-pronged approach. First, we need a cultural shift We need to redefine masculinity as something more than just physical strength and stoicism Openly discussing health concerns, seeking help when needed, and prioritizing well-being – these are not signs of weakness, but hallmarks of strength and responsibility
Second, healthcare systems need to be more men-friendly Many men feel uncomfortable with traditional healthcare settings, often perceiving them as judgmental or lacking in understanding of their specific needs Creating male-focused clinics with knowledgeable staff and a welcoming environment can encourage early intervention
Third, risk management and workers’ compenstaion professionals can play a crucial role. By incorporating men ' s health awareness into workplace safety programs, promoting healthy lifestyle choices, and offering mental health resources, these professionals can become champions of preventive care for their workforce. Imagine a world where men are encouraged to take charge of their health, where seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Imagine workplaces that prioritize employee well-being and create a culture of openness around health issues The economic benefits for companies would be significant, but more importantly, the human cost of neglected health would plummet
This fight for men ' s health is not just for the men themselves It's for their families, their friends, and the communities they hold together It's about fostering healthy families, productive workforces, and a more vibrant society It's about building a world where men aren't just the anchors, but also the cared-for, the prioritized, the empowered when it comes to their health
This is just the beginning of the conversation In upcoming articles, we'll delve deeper into specific men ' s health concerns, explore innovative approaches to prevention and treatment, and celebrate the men who are actively defying the stereotypes and taking charge of their well-being. Stay tuned, because the future of men ' s health is bright, but only if we start talking about it today.

MY JOURNEY FROM BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR TO NONPROFIT LEADER
Written by Ashley Lloyd
Breast cancer is a journey that no one should face alone As someone who is deeply involved in the breast cancer world and as a 39-year-old Stage 3 breast cancer survivor, I hope that no one ever will face their diagnosis without someone by their side
My name is Ashley Lloyd, and I am the Director of Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida, a nonprofit that provides short term, non-medical financial assistance to breast cancer patients in active treatment throughout Central Florida Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida provides unwavering support, resources, and hope to women battling this formidable disease
We pay to invoice rent or mortgage, utilities, car payments and car insurance BCFCF also helps with gas for treatment travel and helps with groceries We are committed to fostering wellness, promoting self-care, and uniting women As a past recipient of this organization’s help two years ago, I am the greatest testimony
In November 2020, the day before Thanksgiving, I received a phone call that changed my life: I was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer at 36 years old Oh, and throw in this was the beginning of COVID shutdown, so I mentally lost it I’d never had a cavity, never broken a bone, I thought I was for the most part healthy Insurance doesn’t cover mammograms until you ’ re 40, so I had never really thought about getting one as it wasn’t on my ‘to do’ list I had felt a lump but kept hoping it was tissue or something and would go away
Hearing you have breast cancer is terrifying enough, but it’s not the only fear that enters your mind I was worried about the unknownhow much work would I miss? How would we keep up with kids’ soccer and keep our lights on? Radiation crème was $50 for 6 ounces, $75 for the mastectomy pillow, oh and the deductible to pay before surgery
The doctors asked if my breast cancer was genetic, but I had no idea because I was adopted I had to do genetic testing (also something my insurance didn't cover), and I decided to find my birth parents All or nothing, right?! Thankfully, I don't have the BRACA gene, but I do have a gene mutation for colon cancer (Apparently, I got the wrong cancer, so add colonoscopy every year to that to do list)
While I was getting ready for surgery and having major anxiety about how life would continue for my family while I was recovering, my friend told me about this group she had heard of She didn’t know anything about them, but it couldn’t hurt to call.
This phone call led to my mortgage, car payment, car insurance, and electric being paid for two months so I could focus on getting better My children’s daycare was paid, we received help with groceries and school supplies, and more. Wait, so this small group of women just helped women fighting breast cancer, no strings attached!?!? I was in awe of this Godsend, but I needed to know more
I opted for a lumpectomy with an oncologic reduction, with 8 Accuboost and 40 radiation treatments I had positive lymph node involvement and those were removed was put on Anastrozole for 8 years, and Lupron shot for 5- basically anything to not let my body produce estrogen
I kept telling everyone about this group of women that helped me, but no one knew what I was talking about I prayed that if I beat my battle, I would vow to help BCFCF grow I didn't want to just sit around and wait for breast cancer again and not pay it forward.
Our Florida founder, Leah Grieger, was diagnosed in 2017 and wanted to help our local communities She and a group of close friends host an annual Pink Ribbon Gala every October, and this is presented by Watson Clinic. When she saw how grateful I was and how determined I was to BCFCF, she asked me to take the torch She said she felt in her heart that I was the person that BCFCF needed to grow
Being diagnosed with BC doesn’t just affect the patient; it’s a life altering event that affects the entire family For this reason, BCFCF has a separate children’s fund that we help with the daily life of the children in the home- orthodontic appointments, a musical instrument, cheer lessons, school uniforms We provide additional help in December to help with Christmas and are trying to make our Children’s Fund able to provide more support as we are growing and expanding Our hope is to let the children keep their daily life as normal as possible as one of their parents is fighting for their life
Today, I have patients being referred to us as Susan Komen and American Cancer Society, which seems crazy to me! I still work out of a room in my house, as we can’t afford to pay for an office yet. Did you know that these national organizations are no longer helping with financial assistance like mortgage etc as they used to, so if someone we know gets diagnosed, do you know who Susan Komen tells them to call? Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida
I dove into the world of nonprofit and healthcare, neither of which I was familiar with I just started sending emails and speaking to groups, going to networking events and such Over the last year, the growth was shocking as people found out who we are Florida Cancer Specialists, Moffitt Cancer Center, Watson Clinic, Central FL Health Care, Bayfront, Orlando Health, Bay Care, and Advent are all somehow involved with BCFCF now Husbands of patients were asking for support groups; we also started a women ’ s support group Shops that closed due to COVID donated hundreds of brand-new bras and wigs, so we now provide wigs, bras, and prosthetics We have started a local survivor and support group We held our first golf tournament, Jeepin for a Cure, and more
I began hand selecting and building the Board of Directors and filing to stand as a foundation on its own here in FL, separate from our parent chapter BCFO. (Mary Beth O’Reilly, founder of O’Reilly Auto Parts, is a family friend of Leah’s and a 25-year breast cancer survivor Leah and her friends prior worked under BCFO)
In the face of breast cancer, the strength of a united community can’t be broken BCFCF is not anywhere close to being done, and still have a lot of growing to do Together, we are stronger, and I want to share just a couple initiatives that are needed and vital to BCFCF:
1
Community Outreach: Raising awareness and providing education about breast cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment options is a collective effort We host community outreach events to spread knowledge and encourage proactive health measures, while also looking for ways to reach new supporters, volunteers, and donors
2
Support networks: Peer support is invaluable Our foundation facilitates support networks where women can connect, share their stories, and find encouragement from other women who understand their journey
Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida is more than an organization that raises money; it is a lifeline for women navigating the challenges of breast cancer Through our commitment to wellness, selfcare, philanthropy, and unity, we empower women to face their journey with courage and hope
By coming together, we can create a supportive, compassionate community where our patients are cheered on to fight and become a thriver No one should ever have to choose between a radiation treatment or keeping their lights on at home By amplifying voices and driving change, we strive to make a lasting impact on the healthcare landscape Please join us in our mission to make a difference, one woman at a time.
