Orthopedic Center of South Florida and its premier doctors are one of the nation's leaders in treating all types of orthopedic and podiatric injuries. Robin Fielding, CEO of Orthopedic Center of South Florida, first became involved with medicine back in 1990. Prior to working in orthopedics, Fielding managed hospital-based and outpatient practices for specialties such as Pediatrics, OB/GYN, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Anesthesia and Emergency Medicine. When Fielding switched from the corporate medical world, she wanted to stay challenged and put her efforts toward a new opportunity to build OCSF. “After a approx. 6 years of my prior work, I moved on and was gifted with the opportunity to become the CEO at The Orthopedic Center of South Florida. It was the perfect opportunity to grow the practice.

Since becoming CEO of the practice in 1998, Fielding has grown it from a nine-doctor practice to a 17-doctor practice—and is still growing. The practice has five locations serving the Tri-County Area. All five locations are conveniently located in Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties making them easy for patients who need their specialized services.

Robin is always looking for ways to improve everything in the practice. She's on top of what's going on in orthopedic care, and she really wants to make sure that Orthopaedic Center remains at the forefront exceeding the standard of excellence in our community.

The Center is South Florida’s leader in the treatment of workers' compensation cases, with an emphasis on complex cases. Vulnerability in Workers’ Compensation In 2018, I sustained an injury to my left hip. The injury resulted in five surgical procedures that summer, with a plethora of rehab on my road to recovery. While the physical process was painful and challenging, the mental components worsened. This was a workers’ compensation claim. Six weeks post-operation, I was in physical therapy. My physical therapist was very straightforward with me and said, “The physical rehabilitation will not be the hard part to this, the mental rehabilitation will be much harder. Prepare yourself.”

I thought I’d been in workers’ compensation for 15 years in the back of my mind. I have broken a plethora of bones in my life and had a few operations. I had sustained injuries with compound fractures… I got this. Pain is not my enemy. I am tough! And just like that, the world smiled at me and said, hmmm. Are you? Boy, was I wrong.

Physical therapy started quickly after surgery. By the time I had progressed with enough strength to do squats, it was time to start moving to one-legged squats. Easy I thought! Just a simple retraining of the muscle memory as exercise had been a part of my life since childhood. This was going to be a breeze. And then I fell.

My left leg could not support my body, and I fell to the ground. The ground was hard, and I felt my tailbone hit the black spongy flooring.

I started to cry.

This had NOTHING to do with my physical limitations but the failure washing over me like giant ocean waves suffocating me with their intensity. I cannot show up for myself. I am not strong enough for this. And if I am not able to do this for myself, what am I doing to be a role model for my daughter? What is she seeing?

What is my team seeing? What does my partner see? I felt so weak as I sat there on the floor at therapy and cried. I felt so seen, and so vulnerable.

My therapist moved to the ground area of the open flooring space next to me and put her hand on my knee. “I told you this would be tough. And you will get tougher. You will get stronger. And now you know how your injured workers feel when they are going through this.” Boom. That was the lesson. More so than how I felt in my own life, for 15 years, I did not get it in the context that was this moment. I knew about care, compassion, concern, empathy… all the things I understand the matter in human behavior. But I did not know or understand it like this.

To understand the flood of emotions that hit you like the heavy ocean waves of failure feels like a dark hole of despair. I had an amazing support system helping me through this process from family, friends, team members, medical professionals, and neighbors. Even with these amazing, circled wagons of support, I felt alone. I felt as if I was the only person who had experienced this situation, and I had no idea who I could talk to about this who could understand the weight I felt I was carrying. Workers’ compensation has a stigma, and I did not want to be seen differently because of it.

When we look at vulnerability, we fail to acknowledge this emotion’s most profound and authentic parts. Vulnerability exposes us to others and experiences in times of risk or uncertainty. While I sat there, crying on the physical therapy floor, there was no hiding my emotions. My emotions were on display for everyone to see. I felt anxiety, uncertainty, and an immediate need to self-protect, and I had no idea how.

The single left-legged squat was a risk of failure. When I went back the next time, I felt uneasy, and there was an uncertainty to the trust in my body. I wanted to be strong and feel that I could do this! I was scared to fail and even more uneasy about the emotions throughout this process.

I let this situation sit with me for a long time before I talked about it. It felt icky and gross. The recovery journey is not a pretty one. It is paved in colors of purples, blues, and yellows from bruising, designed by stitches and stables, creating patterns of scarring to remember the events leading to this point. And what had I learned?

I learned the power of vulnerability.

When a worker is injured, a plethora of emotions come into play, from fear to resentment, being scared, hopeful, worry-some, concerned, and many more. This is a risky time, not only for the human body and the financial elements of this person but also for the experience itself, as it creates so much uncertainty. When we add in the ‘insurance adjuster’ from the company the media has occur, it is no wonder people wall up and become skeptical of the process.

Insurance companies have a purpose, to restore the livelihood of people. In workers’ compensation, the goal is to restore people who have been injured by betting them back to work, back to life. If that truly is the purpose and intention of an insurance company, why do we not focus on the vulnerability of an injured human during this time? Suppose we are well aware of the purpose of the programming. Suppose we understand the people involved, and there is a science to support human behavior. Why do we leave off this element, the HUMAN element, to the workers’ compensation claims process?

This should be the cornerstone in the workers’ compensation process, looking to understand the vulnerability and exposure of an injured person during this time of need. These injuries are unforeseen circumstances that just happen to be at work. We need to take this to heart and rethink how we look at the entire landscape. How do we start incorporating more HUMAN for a better overall experience?

Bonus points. This is the right thing to do, to focus on helping people… when you do this and focus on these areas of vulnerability within the human psyche, it improves organizational culture, and employee morale, and it saves money. Crazy. Doing the right thing saves money. Who would have thought?

Why and How did the practice start?

Orlando Orthopaedic Center was founded in 1972 by 2 Orlando orthopaedic surgeons, Dr. Mumby and Dr. Shea. The practice started with one office downtown and has now grown to over 40 providers and 10 offices. We are celebrating our 50th year in business this year.

What strategies do you use to make sure you clearly communicate your message to everyone involved?

Ensure that all forms and communication are sent out timely and accurately to those who are in need of the information. Ensure that treatment and any tests/procedures are scheduled promptly and timely to ensure quick diagnosis and return to work. Obtain authorizations as indicated to make sure everyone is on the same page with the treatment plan.

What is the best way to reach you and your staff?

Describe your best “ah-ha” moment (or two), when you knew something you had done had a rippling impact in a person’s life, whether at work or personally.

One was at work, but it was a very different situation. I also handled subrogation, and I had a citizen call who was extremely distressed. Her driver’s license was suspended in error following an accident. Lots of red tape for her and I helped her get her license reinstated. Sometime later I received a text message from her sharing how much she appreciated what I did to help her when no one else took the time. That really meant something to me. I realized I am here to help others. That’s my role.

What are the three characteristics or traits you possess that have influenced YOUR path and makes YOU who YOU are?

Positivity always. Happiness – I love to laugh. Taking life so seriously brings me down. I make fun of things, myself. I like to look at the bigger picture and it’s happy. Empathy – I feel what people are going through, the situation as a whole.

Alison Smith Risk Generalist at City of Cape Coral Your history is an indicator that you have been very successful in your career. How did you get into the workers’ compensation field?

It was happenstance. I left working for the court system in Domestic Violence and went to work for a temp agency. For about three years, I worked for Chad Motes, a personal injury and claimant attorney, followed by five years with Cora Molloy, who was an insurance defense attorney. She joined Morgan and Morgan and I followed her there. Realizing I needed a complete change, I became a truck driver for a while and learned I was pregnant. It so happened that the Risk Generalist position was open with the City of Cape Coral in January 2017. I applied and started in February 2017. It was the job I wanted and perfect timing. I love it.

In your current role, what do you believe has the most significant impact on the outcome of each claim and the injured employees?

I like being able to talk to the employees, who are actually my co-workers, and help them through the workers’ compensation process, answers questions, build relationships with them and others. We have a bond. I believe that helps them get through the claim process. Rooting for them all to recover. We all want them to come back. It’s all about communication and a team approach.

When faced with a critical decision, what do you find most helpful to you within your organization as well as from your own experience to help you make that decision?

Taking time to process, stepping back, looking at it, giving it a few minutes, and discussing the situation with the Risk Manager and a co-worker who was acting Risk Manager for a long time. When there are difficult and challenging situations where decisions need to be made, I want and need that collaboration.

Did you have a mentor (or two)? If so, what impact did that person (or people) have in your life, in regard to your career, your life.

The first is Sue McKenzie. I worked with her at one of the law firms. She is that person who can make you laugh, I mean belly laugh hysterically, and she’s family-oriented and taught me a lot about working in the field of personal injury. We are friends to this day from 15 years ago. That one year I worked with her made a huge impact on my life. Another is Cora Molloy who was in my corner all the time. She helped me with some personal issues. I don’t know how I would have handled them without her support. When I left Morgan and Morgan, we lost contact and didn’t talk for eight years. At the WCI Conference, Cora was there, walked over to me, and gave me a hug. I had been praying for that moment for eight years! I used to send her messages so her giving me that hug was everything. I love that woman. Three of us who worked together so long ago went to dinner at the conference. It was like no time passed. She helped me prepare for the job I’m in with the City of Cape Coral, just from what she taught me.

What makes you happiest, balanced, fulfilled?

My daughter. No hesitation. She just turned five. Also, if I am extremely stressed, my most relaxing thing to do is take a ride in the car with the windows wide open and the music up. It makes me happy.

If you could make one change in the industry, what would it be?

More awareness. I don’t think everyone understands what workers’ compensation really is. Sometimes my co-workers don’t understand about filing a claim and what happens from there. Helpful is a session going over the basics and making sure they know workers’ compensation is there to help them when they’re injured, and it’s nothing to be afraid of.

As an employer, what differentiates your workers’ compensation program or “back to work” program from others?

I keep in constant communication with each employee’s supervisor to see how each person is doing and I check on work status. It’s a strict return-to-work policy. We don’t want to lose any of our employees so we work together to find something they can do working for the City of Cape Coral.

Is there anything additional you would like to share?

I love my job. I love what I do. I wish I had more time to go out and meet the employees to build relationships with them.

Having them see my face so they know who they are talking to. It’s difficult considering we have approximately 2100 employees at the City of Cape Coral, including the charter school system.

How did you get started, Claire?

I started in the file room at Claims Capabilities and then went to AmComp, which is Employers. I was with CCI for five years, learning as much as I could at the time. The move to AmComp was instrumental in my professional growth. While I was there, I got my all-lines adjuster license. I was there for ten years, and I loved being an adjuster. It’s never dull or boring, and I loved the diversity as an adjuster… talking with the injured workers, file reviews, billing, collaborating on difficult claims, and just having every day different from the last. For the last twelve years, I am with QMM, and it’s never dull or boring here either! I have the knowledge of both worlds that I can share.

Claire Quinlan Director of Operations at Quinlan Medical Management (QMM) QMM has grown tremendously. What sets QMM apart as a case management organization?

Yes! We continue to grow. I believe QMM is where it is today as we are a family-oriented and woman-owned and operated company. Being ahead of technology and being innovative are key to our success. I find structure and detail in our communication are critical. Most important are the relationships we have with our clients. We go above and beyond with whatever we can do to help them, whether it’s a critical injury or any issue that is important to them. We are trusted to fill their requests. I would also say our stability as a company is through longstanding relationships which bring us new relationships. Word of mouth is important so when an adjuster we’ve known for 20 years shares with others, QMM grows. Something I should share is we recently won an award as a “Top 2022 Women Owned Business.”

But we manage to care for what I would call “general” workers’ compensation injuries and, separately, severe injuries such as amputations, burns, and neuro injuries. What is your philosophy personally?

Be kind and the person somebody needs. To do this you must be strong and able to function both as a leader and a backboard.

What is QMM’s philosophy?

We see people, not injured workers. We like to help them get back to what they were and more, if possible. The worker who is emotionally devastated over two broken fingers deserves and receives understanding from QMM nurse case managers the same as a worker with a more serious medical injury. We recognize the emotional impact, and the fear that can come from any type of injury, and we help each person by being compassionate, encouraging, supportive, and goal-oriented, actually cheering their successes along the way. When we do this, we fulfill our mission for our clients by resolving each claim through our case management expertise.

What has influenced your path and life accomplishments, your success in business, and what makes YOU who YOU are?

Easy answer. Moving to Orlando changed my life. I finished my degree at Valencia and that’s when I first got into workers’ compensation. The biggest influence in my life is my two children who changed me completely. They brought meaning to my life. I believe when you have children, your life is more about caring for and wanting for them rather than for yourself. My birthdays are nice but it’s all about their birthdays and what I can do to make them happy.

How do you see QMM expanding?

Moving forward with the times which are constantly changing, sometimes weekly, sometimes daily. AI for sure.

With huge companies acquiring others, we have to progress, be ahead of the curve, and stay exceptional to remain a leader in the industry. I know personalized service is key for QMM. We put ourselves out there in all platforms, bringing QMM to conferences. We definitely expose the people we are and share what we can do for both injured workers and for our clients.

It’s a flow. This is how we work with adjusters, providers, and with everyone involved with each injured worker. We want to be in front of people and we know that makes a difference. We know strong relationships are one of our biggest strengths in growth.

What is one of the biggest assets for QMM? Our work ethic and strong communication with everyone involved. Our nurse case managers and support staff are always available. We respond 24/7/365 and we are a real team. We are available. Nurses don’t want to leave QMM. We love this! We hear from our nurses that we are easy to work with and they know we care about them and their families. Our nurses are dedicated and loyal. Very high level.

Very hard workers. They go above and beyond without us asking.

What do you see about QMM that many others might not see or know?

Ties and bonds with people. Even if we don’t work with them, we have lifelong friends. The camaraderie is special. When I meet a nurse working for us for the first time at a conference, it’s like family. We’ve already worked together and know each other! This is not an easy business. You want to take away the hard and make it easier for people, for our employees, for the injured workers, and for the adjusters and other people we work with.

Tell me a bit about what sparked you to go into Risk as a career?

I got my start in claims management and was not satisfied with negotiations and paying claims. Although, I enjoyed handling different types of claims; I knew there was something more. There must be a way to diminish the need for insurance, so I decided to be a part of loss prevention and loss mitigation. Claims are absolute, but in Risk, I could achieve the happy medium between negotiating, comparative negligence, and imperfect human participation.

Baunie McConnell Director of Risk Manager at Miami Dade County I had the pleasure of meeting with Baunie over a decade ago when we put a program together in central Florida. The moment I had the chance to work with Baunie, I knew this was a pioneer of hands-on, get things done type of executive. Baunie is an innovative leader in technology and she is not afraid to take risks.

Baunie is a graduate of Smith College in Northampton Massachusetts. She earned her Juris Doctorate at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth School of Law. Baunie is now the Director of Risk Management at MiamiDade County for five years, one of the largest counties on the East Coast of the USA. Baunie is an active leader of 84 staff.

Her coaching style of management has inspired the team to grow and think independently. Her very unique approach and style of management consider all are capable.

Baunie takes on extra initiatives near and dear to her heart and her passion shines. She is a leading advocate for the awareness of diversity in the workforce. Baunie propels any committee, challenge and campaign that brings to the table awareness of African American equal rights with enthusiasm. It is no wonder she often finds herself nominated to spearhead initiatives.

I had the opportunity to work side by side with her on a Black History month project and witnessed firsthand her approach to the event. I was inspired and witnessed her relentless effort to detail. Her project would be exceptional and the audience walked away inspired, aware, enthusiastic and educated.

What experiences do you draw on from your past that fuels your passion to coach people and not manage people?

Coming from a Liberal Arts College, we were taught to think for ourselves and be responsible for our actions and reactions. Coaching allows individuals to take responsibility and allows them to reason through everyday and complex situations. I give people the opportunity to solve problems for themselves and be accountable for the resolution. This encourages strategic thinking and ownership of their contribution to the team.

Tell us a bit about what you see yourself doing as a future goal?

The goal I envision for myself - concerning the future - is to maintain consistent and accountable ease of process and communication. I am motivated to keep County employees and constituents informed and safe by preparing readiness plans and anticipating focused needs in tune with the evolution of the current climate of terrorism, pandemics, weather, and technological and geopolitical disasters. I am currently working on establishing an Enterprise Risk Management Program. I want the County to rise to be the world-class flagship risk management model.

What do you want to see in the future for us as a workforce?

Diversity, diversity, diversity I want a workforce where people are not judged by their skin color, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, or disabilities. Where everyone’s evaluated on the merit of their skillset or expertise.

Any other words of inspiration you would like to elaborate on?

I want to inspire people to rise to the challenge of doing their jobs for the sake of becoming the best they can be, to seek the driving force within to maintain their strive for excellence.

I started right out of high school in the healthcare, and insurance industry. I got into Workers' Compensation by default right after coming back from giving birth to my son Michael. I was presented with the opportunity to learn the business, become a licensed professional, and oversee a unit of claim adjusters to handle the program for the State of Florida. My job responsibilities are constantly evolving. My primary job is to manage and oversee the certified closed network GB FlexWorks for one of our top-tier clients, MDCPS. We are currently working on reviewing the ancillary services in the network. It is my job not only to ensure we have the required services but also adequate geographical coverage.

I am proud to say GB FlexWorks and the MDCPS platform continue to outperform the GB BOB through our innovative and personalized approach. Relationships are key on any aspect of our lives for successful outcomes. The same applies in the healthcare delivery systems. Through our unique, customized model, we have been able to partner with high-quality providers who share our vision and mission to deliver top-quality care, measurable outcomes that result in cost savings for the client. I am also very involved on the day to day claims operations.

What skills are the most important for your job?

To perform my job, I have to be able to not only have an adaptable personality but the ability to craft relationships, be empathetic and possess the technical skills to service a book of business of clients from all walks of life. What does a typical week in your work look like?

Well, my weeks are rarely typical. I do have scheduled and set meetings, but I am unable to predict what a particular day can be like. Insurance and Risk Management is constantly evolving, and you must be ready to be a step ahead.

What has changed the most about the field since you started?

Risk Management and Insurance as a whole have gone through many changes. Legislations, case laws, and fraud continue to dictate what changes the industry undergoes and the steps to take. For example, in Workers' Compensation, many employers and payors have opted out of Managed Care Arrangements and have now moved to a more direct model of delivering care to their Injured Workers. Hence, relationships are an integral part.

What do you see as the major issues/ trends in the field today?

One of the main issues/challenges I see in our industry is the lack of empathy by some of the stakeholders. In order to craft a successful product, you need to first make sure people are invested in the vision and mission. The next thing is to remember the person on the other side of the phone can be you at any given point. Focus on customer services, and personal touch is critical to the success of any program/initiative.

How important is it for women to empower, support, and lift each other up, and what does that mean to you?

I love all the ladies I get to work with every day. We have many women in leading roles and we bounce ideas off each other.

Did you always want to work in this field?

No clue that I would end up here, but sure glad I did! We have grown so much over the past 16 years. New states with new laws. Always learning and always growing.

What skills are the most important for your job?

I am a big believer in getting everybody on the same page.

When we have claims that are problems, I get Div. mgr, Safety mgr, HR, adjuster, and our attorney on call – that way we are always coming at something as a united front.

What has changed the most about the field since you started?

The laws change daily. Make sure you are adhering to everything in each state.

I am a big animal activist. I am always collecting treats, fundraising, and helping all the local shelters (among many other charities).

Can you tell us about one accomplishment with your career or family that you are most proud of?

I Co-Chair an event called Doubles for Dreams. We send local either severely injured or terminal children on their dream vacation.

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve done in your life?

I would say leaving a prior career that most people would only be dreaming of having and coming to a career that makes me happy.

What is the best career advice you ever received?

My dad always told me “people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”. Put them first and they will always take care of you. Helped me both in business and personal.

Luckily in my company, we are viewed equally. I would say in my prior life in the construction industry, it took a lot longer for people to respect you. You definitely had to work harder.

Since he was little he grew up around physicians so he always saw himself as a doctor, however, there was one thing he loved just as much and that is— baseball. He saw himself becoming a professional baseball player but later realized that it wasn’t the path for him but knew he wanted to get into sports medicine. One time at a Red Sox baseball game he saw the team's sports doctor and realized that he also worked at the same hospital as his mother. He got to watch the team doctor do his work and knew he would love to do that.

As time went on Dr. Amar evolved from sports medicine into becoming an orthopaedic surgeon to then specializing in the spine. He studied medicine at the New York Medical College, completed his fellowship at NYU hospital, conducted research at John Hopkins Medical Institutions, and completed additional training at Cornell University. He is now board certified in orthopaedic surgery by the

Fast forward to today, Dr. Amar has two beautiful kids and a wife. He enjoys spending time with his family and learning more about his kids everyday and how they can grow up in the same environment and be completely different and grow in their own way.

Since the global pandemic has put everyone in quarantine Dr. Amar stated that it has been great for his family to connect and spend more time with each other since he spends so much time away working. At his practice Miami Institute for Joint Reconstruction, they have implemented telemedicine services for their patients to be safe and still get their care. Along with limiting the amount of people they see per day to limit the amount of people in the waiting room.

In regards to workers compensation, he believes in getting the injured worker back to work as soon as safely possible.

He tries to manage his work comp patients the same way he would his private patients, however, work comp patients tend to believe that someone is responsible for their injury. Which is understandable to him but the key thing is to find out what the actual injury is because for the spine he can find multiple tears. So the key thing for him when it comes to workers comp patients is finding the missing puzzle piece and identifying the contributing cause.

As time has gone by Dr. Amar has implemented the hard working values he learned from his parents and become the doctor he always wanted to be. His story is one of the most inspiring stories we have gotten to capture and I hope whoever is reading this takes away some valuable information and to remember to never give up on your goals.

Many know Dr. Craig Popp as just an orthopedic surgeon, however, we got a chance to speak to him one on one and learn more about his journey in becoming a doctor.

Dr. Popp grew up in Southern California. Popp swam competitively and participated in water polo. Coming from an athletic background he utilizes that skill in treating all of his patients like pro athletes.

So what got Dr. Popp into wanting to become an Orthopaedic surgeon? He stated that since being an athlete whenever he got injured he saw the doctors treating him and others. And it was there where he saw that he could see himself becoming a doctor.

He went on to receive his undergraduate degree in biophysics from the University of California, Berkeley, Berkeley, California, Dr. Popp earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Following medical school, he completed his internship and residency training in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Popp then went on to complete further specialty training in spine surgery through the University of Southern California Spine Center Fellowship at Keck School of Medicine of USC in Los Angeles, California.

He joined Vero Orthopaedics and Neurology back in 2017 and began practicing in the state of Florida. Where he enjoys swimming, working out, and racing his sailboat. He specifically loves racing his sailboat because it's an individual sport that makes you rely on yourself.

However, in his practice, he likes to treat his patients with a team approach. Since spine patients tend to have issues for longer periods of time he stated that he gets to really know his patients and see their progression.

When it comes to workers' compensation, his philosophy is to treat claimants like athletes and get them back to work as soon as possible. Even if it’s to a certain degree because if you stop going to work it's harder to ever get back.

Medina says she was later introduced to Orthopaedic Center of South Florida where she became the first female doctor of the practice.

In her free time, Dr. Medina enjoys a wide variety of sports including diving, yoga, cycling and running. She also is actively involved with many local charities, performing volunteer work and offering her time personally and professionally.

Dr. Medina later received her undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

During her undergrad, Medina recalls working full time in the family restaurant and jewelry store.

She then attended Barry University, receiving her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine in 2003. While at Barry University, she was the recipient of several awards for outstanding achievements in Biomechanics and Orthopaedics as well as in clinical evaluation. She was also involved in many organizations and volunteered much of her time to the local community, where she received various awards as well. “I was able to shadow people during my early years and that is why today I still teach. That is what got me to where I am today.”

Tell us a little about yourself and who you are?

I'm an orthopedic surgeon, living in Miami for the last 16 years. I am of Colombian descent, born and raised in Queens NYC. Growing up in NYC taught me how to live and work with people from all over the world. Speaking Spanish sh at home also prepared me for my medical career in Miami. I couldn't be happier in Miami.

What is your “why?” What inspires you every day to do more/better?

I love making my patients better and finding out they either went back to work or finished that Triathlon they had been training for.

Take us back to when you first began in medicine what was it like for you?

During my time volunteering at the Manhattan VA in New York City, I was enlightened as to what my life was going to be like. I met some medical students who encouraged me to be a doctor and it soon became my dream. So you can say I have my "dream job.

Actually, it’s s not a job at all, it’s s my calling.

What is the most challenging part about your job?

Patients' care, unfortunately, gets delayed by the system which then makes it difficult for us to make the patient better. For example, a patient with MRI- diagnosed small rotator cuff tear who has surgery quickly, gets to MMI faster than waiting months later; the tear now has progressed and the surgery and its inherent postop rehab are now harder to accomplish, and less chance of a full recovery.

What is your philosophy in treating a WC patient?

Try to get to the root of the problem that I can help with. These patients come with much baggage and many complaints. My job is to improve their joint but they want me to treat every problem they have. It's tough for the patient but I like laying the ground rules early.

If you could change one thing about the WC industry what would it be?

All WC injured patients should get an MRI early in the process-too many patients are delayed in getting an MRI and this delays their referral to a specialist who can better treat a surgical problem rather than keep doing physical therapy with no improvement.

If you could give one wellness tip what would it be?

It's so important to stay healthy by exercising at least 3-5 days /week and eating healthy.

Dedicated- to my craft, my practice, my team, and my patients. Responsible- in my practice of surgery, to my patients’ health and wellbeing and in the trust my referrals have in my practice. Empathetic- understanding everyone’s needs, circumstances and desires.

Take us back to when you first began in medicine what was it like for you?

It was exciting, uncharted, and a whirlwind. Large complex surgical procedures, multiple hospitals, and ER call every third day and every third weekend.

What do you like most about practicing medicine and why?

The ability to interact with so many different people (patients, family members, referring physicians, case managers, etc.) on an individual basis and being able to take care of it all.

What is your philosophy when treating injured workers?

Understanding the circumstantial complexity associated with the injured worker; that it is more than just the surgical procedure.

What changes or improvements do you feel you can bring to the workers' compensation industry?

Our ability to understand the process from a high-level perspective, we see and treat the entire process from injury referral to back to work and we simplify the entire process.

What is your process for evaluating and treating patients?

Immediate scheduling of the worker once the referral has been received, gathering of all pertinent clinical documentation, radiologic studies, and necessary forms. Prompt comprehensive history and physical exam with office-based ultrasound examination (when required) for immediate same-day diagnosis and expedited scheduling. Coordination of the surgical process (scheduling, medical clearance, and transportation). Next week follow-up post-op visits and detailed return to work explanations.

Why did you / what made you want to join the insurance sector?

I started my career while in school at Indiana University.

During that time, I worked as a student manager for the Indiana University Foundation raising funds for scholarships for students. I loved feeling like I was making a difference.

From this experience, I knew I loved business and loved feeling like I was changing people’s lives for the better.

Let’s get more specific. Why workers’ compensation?

Aside from it is exactly what industry you wanted to be in when you grew up!

Specifically, workers’ compensation has been an excellent fit for me because I love helping people. We are genuinely in the business of keeping a promise to our insureds to help their injured employees return to work and life. Every day we help people through the recovery process.

In the next five years, what trends do you see in the workers’ compensation industry?

I believe COVID-19 accelerated many trends that were already beginning to present themselves. Talent can be hired all over the country as many companies have figured out how to manage remote employees. Many employees want to keep the flexibility they found during the pandemic. This will present new challenges on how to bring new people into the industry. I also believe technology will continue to eliminate many administrative roles. People who have strong communication skills and are problem solvers will be highly sought after. Data analytics will play a much more significant role in all aspects of the claims process.

Great points. What new developments are you most interested in within the workers’ compensation space?

I am excited about alternatives to opioids. Several companies are providing coaching to help injured workers deal with pain. Virtual technology is also being experimented with to help people manage pain. I am excited to see where this goes over the next decade as people in the industry collaborate together to find alternatives to the oftendestructive consequences of opioids.

I love this. It would be great if we came together to look at this from a collective, common good. Are there any interesting or unusual things you are currently tracking?

Yes, I am closely monitoring how companies respond to a post-pandemic world. What will work flexibility look like?

How will inflation impact employees? What impact will the “Great Resignation” have on the insurance industry?

Companies that fall behind by not getting ahead of these issues could face major setbacks.

I could not agree with you more. The “Great Resignation” has been something we cannot ignore. The status quo simply will not be tolerated by people anymore, especially the Millennials and Gen Z. What areas of opportunity do you feel the workers’ compensation industry is currently missing?

Workers Compensation has a long history of trying to save money by providing the least expensive choice. Often this can result in bad outcomes and increased litigation. The industry as a whole would do well to refocus on an outcome-based approach. This impact is much harder to measure, but I believe it is critical. Also, empathy is needed desperately in the industry. Building relationships of trust with injured employees will increase cooperation resulting in better outcomes. We certainly can do better in this area.

I want to circle back to the comment earlier. What are your thoughts on the generational talent gap we are experiencing? Anything you are doing specifically to address the present issues?

Yes! We have done several things to mitigate the talent gap the industry is facing. First, we found experienced professionals in other fields with strong customer service skills and/or business experience and taught them Workers’ Compensation. This is beginning to provide huge payoffs. We have added a former Flight Attendant, Hospital Business Analyst, Customer Service Specialist, and Small Business Owner to our team and taught them claims. They are excelling, and each brings skill sets from their previous employment, which has made us much stronger.

We also transformed our Admin team for both Claims and Underwriting into a Business Engagement team. We changed the focus from data entry and task work to the customer experience. They are all cross-trained on both Claims and Underwriting and, in a single phone call can answer a variety of questions. We have hired interns and brought them into this department with great success. These employees gain experience in our system and learn the fundamentals of both Claims and Underwriting making them excellent candidates as positions open up. These two approaches have helped us develop experienced talent, diversifying our team, while at the same time adding a pipeline for new talent for the future.

This is great. More organizations need to take notes from your playbook. If you had a magic wand and could change one law or rule related to your work, what would it be and why?

If I could change one thing about the industry it would be to have a nationwide set of rules governing workers’ compensation. Having 50 different versions makes it difficult to administer when our goal is to help the injured worker recover.

YOU ARE SPEAKING MY LANGUAGE!! I could not support an initiative of this making more than ever before. Especially as we approach figuring out how to teach people emotional intelligence to be more empathic. Moving to a system that is more streamlined versus 50 different versions would help the adjusting desk tremendously. If you didn’t work in the workers’ compensation industry what would have been your second choice as a profession and why?

If I didn’t work in Workers’ Compensation, I would love to be a teacher at the high school or college level. I love seeing people learn and grow. I love seeing people have “light bulb” moments when they realize there is a better way.

You should do that in your extra free time now. Hee hee. Kidding. I know you are incredibly busy. I think you should absolutely go into academia. The world needs more Gregs who speak their mind through truth, empathy, and objective fact. We all make mistakes along the way. What mistakes have you learned the most from thus far?

When I first became a manager, I realized I was so busy making an impact that others didn’t always feel heard. While I was hearing all the information being presented, others didn’t feel heard. I have learned to slow down and be intentional with my listening.

Making time for regular one on ones with my employees, showing gratitude and not being distracted when others speak has made a big impact on my relationships with others.

Is there a motto or mission you operate by professionally or personally?

ATPM – Always Think in a Positive Manner. I made this my motto 23 years ago while serving as a missionary on the Navajo reservation. I now have it on the side of my glasses to remind me how we think about things eventually becomes our actions and the sum of our actions become who we are.

Cross-Examination: A Simple ‘Yes’ or ‘Correct’ Will Do Written by Robert J. Rodriguez, Esq.

When I was a young man, my family was in search of an attorney to represent them in a litigated matter. How would they even begin this difficult and tedious process? What criteria would they use? After much pondering, the question was answered: a good and passionate cross-examiner! Thus, my career as a litigator was ignited.

Cross-examination is and should be, the most enjoyable part of any trial lawyer’s life. You may want to consider another path in life since you can’t be a successful trial attorney if you don’t love and look forward to the challenge of a good cross-examination.

If by now you don’t understand the level of my enthusiasm about something as simple as a cross-examination, then you’ve probably never met me or listened to my ramblings about how I literally look forward to every opportunity.

Cross-examination is designed for “control freaks.” If you’re not a control freak, you might prefer direct examination. But what is the difference? In its simplest form, the direct examination consists of asking questions to simply open the door, and then the deponent tells his story. The direct examiner, by asking questions, allows the story to flow and tries to keep the deponent on target. This requires preparation, practice, and the old “don’t ask a question unless you know the answer.” Since it’s the deponent’s story that is being elicited, the questions themselves cannot provide the answer, nor can those questions overtly lead to the answer. The answers from the deponent need to provide the story on their own.

I’ve always been impressed with good direct examiners.

Their level of preparation must be superb to properly guide the deponent. After all, the examiner can’t control every word that comes out of the deponent’s mouth. On direct examination, the examiner purely hopes that the deponent does not start to freelance, ad-lib, or provide answers beyond what would be beneficial to the examiner’s position.

Frankly, allowing someone else to tell the story is nerveracking. You never know if there will be that “extra” one word that slips out from the deponent. This anxiety is where control freaks fall short, causing them to gravitate toward cross-exam rather than direct. Why? Because you tell the story! You control the pace! Yes, it really becomes all about you—the cross-examiner.

In other words, the deponent wants you to engage in the direct examination so that he, the deponent, will be able to say what he wants and not necessarily answer the question you’re asking.

How do you hone your skill in both direct and crossexaminations? Practice. For example, this is what I do to prepare for a direct or cross-exam. My office has ceiling-tofloor windows. This is the perfect place to map out my strategy and write (using erasable, multicolor highlighters —yes, I have the pictures to prove it) “my story.” I determine what evidence, documents, and testimony will support each and every one of the main points I want to make prior to crafting any question.

After completing this as a direct examination, sit down with your witnesses. Ask those same questions and see how they respond—what they say and what they don’t say that they should. Ask questions that will allow the deponent to address every part of your perfect story. Questions such as “how did you feel after that” or “tell us in your own words how you injured yourself” are wide-open questions, which allow almost any testimony.

In cross-examination, you are the storyteller. There should be more words coming out of your mouth than the witness’s. Your questions should all lead to simple answers such as “yes,” “no,” and “correct”; if a witness’s answers go beyond these responses, you’re not being as effective as possible or phrasing the question in the right way. In other words, you are not using the tool of crossexamination to its fullest.

Cross-examination requires you to ask questions that provide the answer within the question. Your questions must always be leading the deponent. The ultimate goal is to have the deponent— someone whose sole job is to argue with your statements and is mentally ready to argue—simply agree with the correctness of your question. In order to do that, preparation is key.

You need to create the narrative based on identifiable or stipulated facts so that you leave the deponent with no option other than agreeing or disagreeing with your statement. This requires documentation, transcripts, medical records, and other material, which you can point to as you ask your leading questions, making the witness look less credible by deviating from his predesigned story described on direct. Your question must be perfect; there can be no wiggle room for any response other than “yes” or “no”. If you get any other answer, either your question is not crafted well enough or you have a witness who won’t properly answer because he knows the answer will be devastating to his case.

As a cross-examiner, start telling your story using short and simple questions. Get the deponent to understand how it’s going to work. Let the deponent get into a rhythm of answering in short “yes” or “no” answers. Incrementally build questions on the previous answers. Think “concentric circles,” then ask those close-ended, leading questions and don’t let the deponent do anything other than answer the specific question before him. Those close-ended questions will end with “... correct?” and then the only answer the deponent can give is to say, “Yes, it’s correct.” Practice this with your spouse, significant other, kids, or friends (who won’t stick around long if you continue with this obnoxious approach). If you can use a set of facts you’ve created and have your deponents answer “yes” and “correct,” you’re achieving your goals as a cross-examiner, or as I see it— taming the beast.

What does maximum medical improvement (MMI) really mean?

After a workplace injury, workers’ compensation will pay for medical treatment for the injured employee up until they reach maximum medical improvement or MMI. What does it mean when a person reaches MMI? Does this mean that their medical treatment is finished? Does it mean that their condition won’t get any better?

What is MMI? When a patient has reached MMI, this means that medical treatment is not expected to result in the continued improvement of the patient’s condition.

Some states use the term “medically stationary” instead of MMI, indicating that the patient’s condition has reached a plateau. A patient who has reached MMI is medically stable, and doctors expect that their condition cannot be improved further by additional treatment.

Once a patient has reached MMI, the patient’s condition will be evaluated. If they have a disability at this point, it will be considered permanent. Legal and financial settlements will be negotiated based on the patient’s situation once they have reached MMI. For workers’ compensation benefits, reaching MMI is a huge milestone. At this point, the determination can be made of whether the patient is disabled (either partially or completely), and whether they have suffered a loss of future earning capacity. This will determine their eligibility for workers’ compensation benefits.

Does MMI mean that medical treatment is complete?

MMI does not necessarily mean that the patient doesn’t require any continued medical treatment, or that workers’ compensation will not cover the costs of that treatment. Some patients may need ongoing treatment in order to stay at the level of function that they currently have. A patient who has reached MMI is not expected to improve further but may require continued medical treatment in order to stay stable.

For example, if a patient develops chronic pain as a result of a workplace injury, they may require ongoing medical interventions, such as pain medications or injections, to continue dealing with that pain. A patient with a work-related lung disease such as silicosis may need medications, respiratory therapy, and even oxygen on an ongoing basis. Workers’ compensation benefits generally continue to cover medical treatment that is intended to keep the patient stable at the point of MMI. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 68

The determination that a patient has reached MMI is made when a patient has reached a plateau and is stable, but this doesn’t mean that further improvement is impossible. Success, Failure, and All The Things Written by Kerstie Blue I used to think that failure is something to avoid at all costs. The fear and perception around what it means to fail are so great for most of us that it holds us back from taking any leaps of faith. But what is failure, really? The mainstream connotation of the word failure implies that we have done something terribly wrong and that we are at a grave crossroads. If we fail, we lose life as we know it. Financially, romantically, among our friends. The list goes on. Referring to something as a failure suggests there was nothing gained in the journey and that the failure in and of itself has no value. Hmm… Is this perception of the word actually accurate? Failure is officially defined as, “a lack of desired success or not meeting the desired outcome.”

Way more mild than what my interpretation of the word means! It doesn’t sound that scary. When we live in fear of failure, we grant it power over us by being “too scared” to go there. This mindset sets us up for desperation when a “failure” occurs because we are unprepared and emotionally distraught when it hits. However, when we get intimate with our fears around failure, do the work to define what it means to us, and brainstorm the potential good that can come from failure, we equip ourselves with the tools to perceive a failure as a tool. If we don’t meet a desired outcome, there is usually a reason why. Therefore, there is a lesson to be learned or a purpose to be understood in every failure. Whether it is something we did wrong, a blind spot we had, or a redirection to a new opportunity, a failure is a chance to absorb, realign, and strategize.

By adopting this mindset, we create the space to decipher the lesson and the purpose within the bigger picture when failure hits. We will know how to take what we learned, pivot, and improve. Thus, a failure is only as bad as we choose for it to be.

Further, the magnitude of which we mentally and physically feel a failure in our bodies is only as great as we allow it to be. By redefining the word, we choose how we tell our stories to ourselves and others. We can be a victim of life or we can be a student. Or, anything else we want to be! On the flip side, what is success? What does it mean to be successful? Many of us default to believing success means “having all the things.” That’s what the mainstream tells us, anyway. Is it possible the mainstream connotation of success is also misguided?

Success is formally defined as, “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose.”

Few of us take the time to explicitly identify that aim or purpose, which leaves us on a path to something vague and intangible that never quite feels like enough. If we haven’t clearly re-defined the meaning of success for ourselves, is there a date when this unclear success will be achieved?

And if that date is not met, the entire effort is considered a failure? In this scenario, if success is a goal we are always shooting for in the distant future, but we’re not quite sure what it is, it’s now more of an indefinite journey than a vague destination (that we never seem to reach). That just seems like a world in limbo.

When we have a clear definition of success, we can see failure as a clue of how to reach the success we are seeking. Besides, most of us aspire to some type of success in this life. My friend, it’s time for you to re-define these words for yourself. Think of a challenge or obstacle – something you’ve been thinking about quite a bit lately. Ask yourself: What does success look like for me? What does failure look like for me? If I fail, what is the worst possible outcome? If I succeed, what is the best possible outcome? If I fail, what is the best possible outcome? If I succeed, what is the worst possible outcome?

When you're grateful for things that are already present in your life (like a job, or a home), you're more likely to make decisions that benefit those things as opposed to ones that could negatively affect them. Gratitude can also help people cope with stress by shifting their focus away from what they don't have toward what they do have in their lives right now.

WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT

Tulum, Mexico WRITTEN BY SAMANTHA DIAZ PHOTOGRAPHS BY SAMANTHA DIAZ Tulum is a laid-back town on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, with a relaxed beach vibe that has attracted artists and bohemians for decades. It's also known for its Mayan ruins and nearby ancient cenotes (sinkholes filled with water), both of which give travelers an authentic glimpse into the past. Tulum is full of color and character, boasting bright buildings and plenty of Instagram-worthy spots. The nightlife here is lively, but if you'd instead relax on the beach, you can do that too. Tulum's beaches are beautiful, but they're also much more affordable than those in Cancun or Playa del Carmen: two other popular towns just up the coast from Tulum. There are plenty of reasons to add Tulum to your bucket list—here are nine of them!

For the history If you love history, Tulum is a great place to visit. The ruins of Tulum are one of the most spectacular Mayan ruins in the Yucatan, and they're worth a visit. It's also where you'll experience some of the histories behind this fantastic culture and its architecture. The Mayans were an interesting group of people who lived on the Yucatan peninsula during pre-Columbian times (500-150 CE).

They were known for their intricate calendar system, advanced architecture, and impressive city-states. Their society was divided into four classes: priests, warriors, farmers/artisans, and merchants.

For the tropical charm Tulum is a small, laid-back town with a very relaxed vibe.

The weather is warm and sunny all year round, making it the perfect place to relax on the beach or enjoy some time in the sun. The food scene here is also delightful, with many restaurants serving fresh seafood dishes and traditional Mexican fare.

For the architecture With so many options available in terms of style and price point, there's no shortage of places where you can relax after spending a day at the beach or heading off into nature for some hiking! The architecture of Tulum is a mix of Spanish colonial, Mayan, and modern. The bright white buildings are made from stucco and coral rock with smooth columns and rounded details. The yellow structures are made from limestone with rounded corners and flat roofs. Pink buildings have more traditional triangular roofing but still, use smooth columns and stucco to create an elegant feel. All this color makes it easy to find your way around town when exploring the streets on foot or on a bicycle (which is highly encouraged) For the plentiful restaurants The best part about Tulum is the food. The town has an abundance of restaurants and bars, each with its own unique vibe and menu.

There are many places to grab a beer or a bite to eat, making it difficult to narrow down where you should spend your time. I had trouble narrowing it down myself! I ended up at two restaurants: one for breakfast and another for lunch, within walking distance. The first restaurant was Coati Cafe (Located at Av. Satelite Sur Esquina Calle Asteroide Centro, 77760 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico). At this cafe, you can enjoy authentic meals from different countries. Good coffee is always available here. The friendly staff provides excellent service, making it a pleasure to rest and have a meal here. My next spot was Taqueria Hornorio (Located at Satélite Sur 19, Tulum Centro, Villas Huracanes, 77760 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico). Taqueria Honorio is a small roadside taqueria you might drive by without noticing. Once you take a closer look, you will find delicious Mexican tacos and a taste of the Yucatan. I tried the tacos (15 pesos each) of cochinita pibil, lechon, and poc chuc—traditional Yucatecan dishes. The minute I took my first bite, I fell in love with the place. I keep coming back whenever I visit Tulum—I highly recommend it! Tip: Go early since they will sell out if it gets too busy.

For the Mayan ruins Tulum is one of the best-preserved Mayan sites and a great place to learn about this ancient civilization. You'll see that it was once a huge city with several temples and pyramids and a palace for the king. The people who lived here were advanced in many ways, including their art and architecture skills. If you're interested in learning about the history of this region, visiting Tulum is an ideal way to do so!

For the lively nightlife If you're looking for lively nightlife, Tulum is the place for you. There are many bars and clubs to choose from, and each has its unique atmosphere. The nightlife here is not as crazy as what you would find in Cancun or Playa del Carmen – it's much more about relaxing and meeting people. The best way to experience this vibrant culture is by going out dancing!

For the cenotes The cenotes are a popular tourist attraction in Mexico, and you should visit one (or more) during your trip. Cenotes are freshwater sinkholes formed through the Yucatan Peninsula's limestone rock.

They naturally form pools of water that can range anywhere from a few feet deep to over 100 feet! Some cenotes have formed into underground caves where divers can explore deep underwater tunnels and chambers.

Others are shallow enough to swim in or even snorkel if you're brave enough. But don't worry—there's no reason for alarm if you get stuck in one of these pools! Just remember: do not panic!

To relax on some of Mexico's best beaches Tulum is a beautiful place to visit, and the beaches offer some of the most scenic locations you will find anywhere in Mexico. The pristine white sand and crystal clear water will entice anyone looking for a relaxing vacation.

Not only that, but these beaches are also safe for tourists and locals alike.

The beaches at Tulum tend not to be crowded, which makes them great places for families with children who might need more space than other resorts can provide.

Tulum is a dreamy vacation destination with something for everyone Tulum is a dreamy vacation destination. The beach town is located on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula and has been named one of the best beaches in North America by National Geographic. Tulum is the perfect place for anyone looking for a peaceful getaway where they can relax on white-sand beaches and soak up some sun before heading out at night for fun activities like dancing under the stars at local bars where live music will keep you entertained all night long! Tulum offers something for everyone: its white sands are lined with thatched-roof restaurants, hammocks, and palm trees. It's also eco-friendly, as much of the property was previously owned by an eco-resort that had to close down due to financial troubles.

The area has since been taken over by locals who continue to preserve the land while giving back to their community through fair wages and other initiatives like free public libraries (more on this later).

Tulum is a magical place—there's something for everyone, whether you're looking to enjoy the culture of this historical city or relax on a tropical beach. The best part is that you can have both! self-care audit Doing a self-care audit is a fantastic way to really look at your life and understand what’s going on.

So why is this all so important and lifechanging?

If you're not already on your journey to self-love, hopefully, you will just begin after today! Selflove can have a huge impact on your overall happiness, health, and wellbeing. All these things may sound simple but getting clear on how you ARE feeling, making time to check-in, and truly letting go of things that no longer serve you can be life-changing. The more you practice self-love, and self-worth, the more you will get aligned with your life purpose.

The easiest step to start your self-love journey is through self-care. One of the most helpful tools I recommend is a Self-Care Audit.

Audit sounds so official, doesn't it? But all it means is taking note of what's going on in your life. To understand what's making you feel stressed, realize what you are making a priority, and acknowledge what habits you've developed (or not developed).

It's about being honest with yourself and recognizing where you are at this moment—and that's the first step toward making changes in your life. Doing the audit is an AMAZING way to liberate your mind, calm your body, and free your soul. NOW it is very important you TELL THE TRUTH. Release all your emotions, desires, ideas, regrets, basically everything on your mind, and let it all out on paper. Be with your emotions and really listen to how you are feeling. So many thoughts clutter up our minds, leaving us feeling overwhelmed; this is the time, TO BE HONEST with yourself; how are things going for you? Are you where you want to be, and if not, why? What is causing you stress right now? How have you grown in the past two years? What advice would you give to your younger self? In this positivity-obsessed culture, we often don't give ourselves time to express how we feel, and in turn, it gets bottled up and held onto. Doing a self-care audit and holding space to feel things, recognize things, and call awareness to them helps us release them! So what are you waiting for? Go ahead and start writing.
