about the cover When it came time to choose a location for the cover of Bloom's first edition, we knew that the Fiddlehead would be perfect. It's where I go to create, write, reflect, journal, and dream. The Fiddlehead is a small space in our backyard, but it's filled with blooming flowers, buzzing bees, and beautiful butterflies. Every Injured Worker Needs a Champion

Written by Dr. Claire Muselaman I love the workers’ compensation space. I feel like I was born into it. I grew up watching my father beat his body up as he worked manual labor (and continues to do so well into his 70s). I had an emergency door handle pierce the skin of my upper thigh while I was working at one of my very first jobs which required a plethora of sutures. I began working with injured workers right out of college, and through it all, the kindness, care, and compassion of those involved has made the greatest difference.

Through the years, I have been granted the opportunity to see the workers’ compensation industry from multiple sides. I have been the daughter of an injured worker, I have been an employer of an injured worker, I have assisted in the legal representation of injured workers, I have been an injured worker, I have advocated for injured workers, and I have held one of the most amazing jobs one could have, that of an adjuster.

Being graced with the multiple facets and perspectives of the different lenses involved with the workers’ compensation industry has given me a chance to understand. Some of these perspectives have been good and some of these perspectives have not been so good.

It is not shocking the workers’ compensation industry has a poor reputation. Injured workers are treated as transactions rather than being looked at as human beings who have suffered a loss. People do not learn from people they do not like. It is very simple. How each of us comes to the table every day matters because every interaction you have with an injured worker is going to be positive and trust-building or negative and trust depleting.

How do you want people to leave you? Worse off than they came to you? Please exist in the industry and find a new profession. We should all want to make good things happen to restore people to their very best after they have encountered

compensation space. We are here to help. The attorney commercials say otherwise, but I can tell you, I’ve managed a plethora of workers’ compensation claims professionals over my years and I have yet to find one who does not want to have the influence to make an injured worker’s life better.

Let us revisit the comment on people do not learn from people they do not like. This can be examined through a couple of lenses. Think about good leaders you have worked with and poor leaders you have worked with throughout your career. Who did you take guidance and feedback from? Was one greater than the other?

For the leaders you felt had an investment in you, did you grow? What about the leaders who created a management transaction?

Step back even further and think about the people you have learned from throughout life.

What about the teachers when you were younger or mentors throughout your career? The more meaningful knowledge transfer occurs once a relationship has been built.

You come to work when you don’t feel like it, you wear a multitude of hats on a regular basis, and you listen to outdated policy that does not always make sense, and you do it anyway because that is what adjusters do.

How powerful would the workers’ compensation industry be if we had adjusters who were empowered to make decisions and try new courses of thought, who were not afraid to take appropriate risks to help those in need, and who were not afraid to think. TO THINK. And to be a champion for their injured workers.

Every injured worker deserves a champion, an adjuster who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that the injured worker become the best that they can possibly be on this road to recovery. Show up. Call. Communicate. Is the adjusting desk tough? You bet! But it is not impossible. We can rise. Each person, every interaction. We can do this. We're born to make a difference. You can be that champion.

Black Hair in Corporate America Six years ago, after having my youngest son, I decided to wear my natural hair. I can vividly remember the moment it happened, which occurred after being home on maternity leave for over four months. I took a good look in the mirror and realized that I had neglected my hair care routines. There was no huge homecoming moment, where I decided to wear my natural hair. For those who may not understand this concept, people of color use the term natural hair to refer to hair growing from the scalp that has not been chemically processed or straightened in any way. Between diapers, terrible twos, breastfeeding, and sleep deprivation, there was simply no time for beauty salon appointments. I was swept up by motherhood with two children under two years old, so I embraced the new look without thinking about how it could impact my workplace interactions or career growth.

There is a long-standing debate regarding black hairstyles' acceptance in the professional world due to societal norms. As my maternity leave was coming to an end, I quickly realized that I needed to find a better job to support my growing family. So as I interviewed, I consciously wore straight hair wigs to cover my natural hair because I feared that it would count against me.

This fear comes from a common unspoken but learned rule amongst black women “Straighten your hair for the interview and only wear your natural hairstyles once you have secured the job.” That is exactly what I did. Very quickly I started to receive biased and unsolicited comments regarding my hair at my workplace. I have been asked if I “just rolled out of bed” and even told I look like I’ve been “electrocuted”. Such comments echoed in my mind when getting dressed and ready for conferences such as the Prima Institute or WCI conference where I would be engulfed in a room full of working professionals.

In July of 2019, California was the first state to sign the Crown Act into law. Soon afterward New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Colorado, and finally Washington joined the effort. As of July 2020, the Crown Act was filed but did not pass in Florida. During a time when Diversity & Inclusion is a hot topic, it is likely that this legislation will resurface but we do not

Humanity in Workers’ Compensation WRITTEN BY DR. CLAIRE MUSELAMAN The principal components of workers’ compensation insurance are built on the presumption of restoring the lives of someone who has had an unforeseen event occur in the workplace. The purpose of workers’ compensation is to restore the life of the injured human being and help empower this person to once again be a functional contributing member of society. It is so simple. Someone is injured in the workplace, and we fix them so they can get back to work and on with their life. BUT, and this is a big but, this is not what happens.

The workers’ compensation landscape needs a serious pick me up, pep talk, and overall makeover.

In our present state, the industry is seen as a dark and dreary cesspool of misery. What should it look like?

I have a vision and a dream for this industry. The workers’ compensation system should be a gorgeous, vibrant space where people make good things happen for one another every day, restoring lives and building up people to once again be their best selves. Add some glitter, add some sparkles, and we have a collective community who makes it easy for someone who has been injured to recover. Add in the component that the people who help do this, such as the adjusting team, feel that they are making meaningful contributions to purposefully-drive someone back to their life, to live, thrive, and prosper.

So… how do we get there? It is time to start educating and paying attention to the science of human behavior. We, as a collective industry, have spent countless decades educating adjusters on statutes, rules, regulations, and parameters to focus upon.

What we have not done is focus our educational and training efforts on the most important piece… the human experience. Workers’ compensation is about people! Working with people, helping people along a healing process, and doing so in a manner that allows injured humans a psychologically safe space to be seen, heard, acknowledged, and valued. The time has come to refocus and shift the knowledge base we have into a scientific approach to the behavioral patterns of humans to have a more pleasurable experience for everyone involved. In addition to this being a happier environment and a positive organizational culture shift, it is the right thing to do. AND it is financially beneficial!! Yes, please listen claims organizations… operating in a manner of this capacity will reduce costs from a claims standpoint and in human capital.

Our training programs have led us to the landscape in which we currently see mistrust, litigation, and negative messaging. I want to change this, and I believe we can pivot the injured worker experience to a positive light moving forward. Not only will this benefit the injured worker recovery, the injured worker healing process, and the injured worker experience, it will benefit the meaning and purpose adjusters feel in their roles daily. As a prior adjuster, I know it is a thankless position to hold… I also know it is an incredibly powerful one and my favorite to date. Where else can you single-handedly change the trajectory of someone’s life for the better every single time you pick up the phone? You can improve someone’s day through every interaction. It is time to start teaching like this and beginning our experiences in the workers’ compensation industry through this path. It is time to change the industry.

It’s Time to Talk About It… Change is Needed WRITTEN BY DONNA CHECK I am blessed to have lived my passion working in the field of brain and spinal cord injury rehabilitation for over 25 years. It has been heartbreaking, inspiring, sad, and invigorating. In sum, working with this special population of people with severe injuries and diagnoses can be a roller coaster of feelings and emotions.

Getting right to it … I am a proponent of change in healthcare, workers’ compensation, and insurance. It is my belief that education and training (or retraining) in these industries will eventually help our country realize its obligations to all people in the United States. Yes, our country.

Wait. Did I say feelings and emotions in that first paragraph? Yes, I did.

I knew nothing about catastrophic injuries when I started but was fortunate enough to have national experts available to me as well as books, articles, and conferences. Formal training was unsurpassed. However, it wasn’t the experts or education that hooked me. I was taken by the patients and the families. I felt for them. I listened to them. I cried with them. I learned all about their loved ones, and I continued to be available to every family at any time. Empathy. Listening. Compassion.

Understanding. Kindness. Advocacy. I got to know every single patient and I remember each of them.

You don’t realize you’re an advocate until you’re entrenched in it. This means talking with an adjuster, a care coordinator or sometimes with a physician with an insurance carrier or company.

Having passion is helpful to elicit empathy, compassion, and understanding from them when also sharing knowledge with them about what’s needed for each patient. Passion and knowledge can’t help but come through when you have both.

Being an advocate for any patient is a PERSON communicating with another PERSON about a PERSON with a life-changing injury or diagnosis.

Patient Advocacy for basic care, surgeries, continued hospitalization, in-patient medical services, specialized rehabilitation, specialty physicians, durable medical equipment, and home modifications has become a normal multiple-times daily occurrence. It shouldn’t be.

Change is humanely and medically necessary in healthcare, workers’ compensation, and insurance.

Just Three of the Numerous Issues and Challenges Change is Needed

Communication is critical with all individuals involved... everyone … families and all professionals and it starts as soon as the claim is filed. That is where it begins.

Initial communication in cases of severe/catastrophic injury sets everything on a course. A call from the adjuster to the family identified on employment records should be a priority and not left up to others to do.

If the injured employee is alert and oriented, and on a case-by-case basis, the injured employee may be able to communicate with the adjuster.

However, count on people with severe injuries being in shock and frightened, thus details very likely will the missed or forgotten.

If there is ANY question or doubt, Call, Call, Call. The family hearing from the adjuster can be extremely comforting and reassuring when they are literally in limbo about what is happening. Fear and adrenaline take over. Kindness and being a good human are SO important.

The positive interaction of the adjuster making contact just to introduce her/himself is something family members will remember and talk about with others.

Take care of the injured or sick person first. They are the focus. Rules, regulations, statutes … they don’t bleed, cry, or feel pain.

People matter. People matter first and foremost.

I will go by my mantra. Here it is.

Every adjuster, care coordinator, or physician working directly for any insurance company or carrier should treat each patient the way they would want the person they love most in their life treated… from start through the outcome.

Although I was born in Brooklyn, NY, I moved to South Florida when I was 11 years old. I'm the proud mother of 2 grown (married) boys...no grandchildren but I keep hoping, lol! Consider myself a Florida girl with Brooklyn roots!

Can you tell us about your early career and your journey to get where you are?

I began my career working in the aircraft manufacturing field as a Customer Service Rep. In South Florida, the industry was shaky. A friend of mine said, "go into healthcare..it's recession-proof". I immediately took some healthcare courses and was lucky enough to land a Secretarial Job with a large healthcare company. Over the next 6 years, I was eventually promoted to Asst. VP for the Southeast (Georgia to South Florida). After some internal troubles, I branched out and finally found my home at the Orthopaedic Center of South Florida. I've been here for 22 years and am very thankful!

What do you like to do with your free time? Any hobbies or passions?

Of course, I had to adjust during these times, but I'm an avid live music lover! Love music cruises and live shows! Love the ocean. Everything about it!; beach boating/deep sea fishing, snorkeling! My passion is to give back. I spent most of my nights as a Zone leader for Sea turtle Oversight Protection for the past 7 years during the summer. I protect nesting moms and make sure the babies make it to the ocean. I'm also very involved with Give Kids the World. This village provides a cost-free carefree week for children with life-threatening illnesses.

Do you have a mentor? Can you share the impact that person or people have had in your life?

My mentor was my grandmother. She was everything I wanted to be. Although she was a homemaker, she taught me not by saying what was right or wrong but by example. She always told me, it's not what you say, "it's what you do."

What do you believe has the most significant impact on your current role?

I wear many hats, CEO, COO, and CFO. Because of that, there are so many moving pieces to succeed.

However, there's no chance of success without quality and dedicated staff!

How would others define your communication style?

Do you prefer to be close to your employees or maintain a healthy distance, and why?

My style, I'd say, is open and available. If you care about your staff and listen to their ideas and concerns, they will realize their critical value and want to succeed for themselves, their families, and the company.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced in your career? How did you overcome it, and what did you learn from it?

There have been so many challenges that I have faced.

However, I cannot look away from what we are dealing with now. This pandemic has been challenging professionally and personally. To continue to try to run a business, care for patients, and keep our employees as safe as we can as the rules keep changing...well, we're all in it together, aren't we?

What’s the most enjoyable or fulfilling part of what you do?

Watching the practice and staff grow personally and professionally.

Born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, I moved to Florida in 1990 and have called myself a Floridian ever since. Since 2015, I have served as the CEO at The Orthopedic Clinic (TOC). Before joining TOC, I served in several leadership positions at top institutions, including: Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of MCR Health Services in Manatee County Chief Operating Officer at Coastal Orthopedics & Pain Management in Bradenton, Florida Vice-President for Advent Health's outpatient imaging enterprise within the Central Florida market Market Manager/Director of Operations at Center for Diagnostic Imaging (CDI) I hold a Master's Degree in Healthcare Administration (MHA) from Ohio University and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Radiologic Sciences from Adventist University. I am a Certified Medical Practice Executive (CMPE) and Certified Radiology Administrator (CRA).

As an advocate for education and supporting an authentic desire to serve, I am honored to sit on the Board of Trustees for AdventHealth University and serve on the Board of Directors for our state Orthopedic Society (Florida Bones Society). I also volunteer time in mentoring upcoming healthcare professionals through the internship program at the University of Central Florida. At a personal level, I am a daughter, sister, wife, mother of three, and most recently, a grandmother. My family is truly the driver behind everything that I do, and without their love and support, I would not be who or where I am today.

Can you tell us about your early career and your journey to get where you are?

At a very young age, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare and commit my life to serving, caring for, and making a difference in the lives of others. In pursuit of this dream, I obtained my degree in Radiologic Sciences and began my healthcare career as a Radiologic Technologist.

Over the past 25 years, I have been incredibly blessed to have progressively grown in my career, serving in various roles ranging from staff technologist to senior-level executive in complex hospital, outpatient, and practice management settings. The most pivotal part of my journey was my experience at CDI, where I was allowed to build several outpatient imaging centers from the ground up – from the center's design to turning the keys over to the new center manager a couple of months after opening. This experience allowed me to touch and learn every aspect of leading a successful healthcare organization.

What do you like to do with your free time? Any hobbies or passions?

As a busy and committed executive, I have to continue to remind myself to "never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life – Dolly Parton." As I get older (and hopefully wiser), I have done a much better job finding work-life balance. My number one joy is spending time with my family in my free time. On any given weekend, you will probably find us out on the water soaking up the sun and taking in the fresh ocean air as we decompress from the previous week. Beyond that, I enjoy traveling and experiencing new cuisine with my husband, along with an occasional escape to the spa. As a life-long learner, I am also passionately committed to my continued growth, so I spend a great deal of time reading, learning, and mastering new skills.

Do you have a mentor? Can you share the impact that person or people have had in your life?

Creating a culture laser-focused on excellence has the most significant impact in my current role—every decision we make affects the team and the health and well-being of the individuals we serve. I take my leadership responsibilities seriously and understand that I am a role model to others around me. As a result, I must make decisions and take actions with the highest level of integrity, honesty, respect, and fairness while always doing what is in the best interest of the patients and the organization. I continually challenge the team to set expectations for high performance, hold each other accountable, and stretch themselves beyond what they believe they are capable of. These efforts have resulted in marked operational, financial, and customer service improvements.

What makes your practice stand out from the rest?

We are experiencing dynamic changes within the healthcare industry that require us to develop innovative solutions and make strategic decisions at an extraordinary pace to maintain our independence. Over the past five years, we have experienced significant growth to prepare us for the future, including the addition of five (5) new sub-specialized physicians, expansion with two (2) new locations, the addition of two (2) new Walk-In Clinics, and the opening of a whollyowned ambulatory surgery center. I am a mom of two daughters and two Mini Goldendoodles Tory and Bella. I was born and raised in Ottawa Canada. I have been with Vero Orthopaedics for 21 years and have really grown to develop a passion for what I do. I was a dancer for most of my life and have taught all styles of dance (jazz, tap, and contemporary for the last 15 years) I currently have a house divided with one daughter studying Accounting at Florida State and another studying Medicine at the University of Florida.

Can you tell us about your early career and your journey to get where you are?

My original journey started in the clinical department as an Orthopedic Technologist. I realized that my passion was on the administrative side about three years into my time at Vero Orthopaedics and began studying Health Administration.

What do you like to do with your free time? Any hobbies or passions?

During my free time, I like to spend time reading, playing with my Goldendoodles, and spending time with my family.

Do you have a mentor? Can you share the impact that person or people have had in your life?

My mentor is the prior CEO of Vero Orthopaedics.

She believed in me before I believed in myself and was my motivation to pursue the Administrative side.

Approximately a year after I finished school she was diagnosed with cancer and had to take an indefinite leave. I transitioned into my current role with her help while she underwent Chemotherapy. Unfortunately, she passed away a year later. This forced me to take on the role of CEO without much experience at the time, however, the skills she taught me and the years we had together have shaped me into the Administrator I am today.

In your current role, what do you believe has the most significant impact?

Servant Leadership. I believe in serving others and taking care of my staff, physicians, and patients first and foremost. They are what make our business succeed.

How would others define your communication style? Do you prefer to be close to your employees or maintain a healthy distance, and why?

I have a very Open Door communication style. I don't believe in the chain of command and take the team approach to management. Staff can come to my office anytime and I'm happy to spend time talking with them.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced in your career? How did you overcome it and what did you learn from it?

The biggest challenge was definitely taking on the role of CEO quickly and without much training. It has taught me that when life throws you challenges you need to keep pushing forward no matter what the obstacles are.

What’s the most enjoyable or fulfilling part of what you do?

Knowing that I am providing the best Orthopedic care possible to the Indian River County community.

What makes your practice stand out from the rest?

Medicine has not changed much since I started, as I finished my training about three years ago.

What do you like most about practicing medicine and why?

I look forward to meeting people from all walks of life and offering them a potential improvement in their quality of life.

What is your philosophy when treating injured workers?

Until I am given a reason not to, I accept an injured worker's condition as the truth and will do my best to offer treatment to help them return to baseline as quickly and efficiently as possible.

What is your "why?" What inspires you every day to do more/better?

I am fulfilled in my work when my patients can become more functional and improve their quality of life while avoiding major surgery.

If you were to describe yourself in three words, what would they be and why?

Trustworthy, Dependable, Caring. Those are three attributes as a patient that I want from my physicians. At a minimum, my patients deserve that.

What changes or improvements do you feel you can bring to the workers' compensation industry?

In the work-comp field, pain management is often referred to as a "black hole." My goal is to help injured workers return to their baseline as quickly and efficiently as possible.

What is your process for evaluating and treating patients?

I attempt to obtain a thorough history, perform a complete physical exam, and combine this with objective imaging to get an accurate diagnosis.

Once a diagnosis is determined, a treatment process is outlined - almost always recommending conservative treatment first.

How do you find a balance between your work life and your home life?

One perk of interventional pain management is an M-F job without call or weekend duty. This allows me to spend time with my family and recharge for the week.

I have the opportunity to work hand in hand with some of the best orthopedic surgeons in the community. Three of these surgeons specialize in treating the spine. I communicate with them daily and coordinate care regarding mutual patients. We review images together on patients concerning pathology and determine the most effective and safest treatment option for them without any delay in care.

What final thoughts would you share with those in workers' compensation?

Worker's compensation is a process that can be difficult to navigate. Treatment at the orthopedic clinic often allows the patient to seek interventional pain management and/or surgical care under the same roof. This provides continuity of care and quick transition between providers if necessary.

After medical school, I had seven years of internship/residency/fellowship training and one year of research. I was excited to finally practice all that I had learned. When I started practicing, I felt like I finally reached the end of a long tunnel.

What do you like most about practicing medicine and why?

My favorite thing about practicing medicine is the relationships that I have built with my patients and their families. Even though I do not practice primary care, I still get to manage patients for different problems over the course of many years. I have patients in my practice who see me under a workers' compensation claim then come back to see me to take care of other issues outside of the workers' compensation system.

What is your "why?" What inspires you every day to do more/better?

I am inspired to do better every day because I am blessed with a skill set that can help heal people and improve their lives. I cannot think of a more rewarding profession.

If you were to describe yourself in three words, what would they be and why?

Dedicated, empathetic, and personable.

Dedicated-To put my full effort into what is important to me. I am dedicated to patient care, my family, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Empathetic- I think that I am well suited to be a physician because of my concern for others and their well-being. Personable-I enjoy interacting with patients, colleagues, family, and friends.

What is your philosophy when treating injured workers?

My philosophy when treating injured workers is to treat the patients with the same great care and respect that I give to all of my patients. I try to understand the complexity of each injured worker's specific circumstances so that I can manage to help get the injured worker better to the best of my ability. I also try to explain to them what work restrictions, if any, I am placing on them and why. Sometimes I have to explain that I am not the person who handles their payroll situation or whether their employer has a position for them. I sometimes have to explain that I am a practicing physician in the community who cares for patients with workers' compensation claims and that I am not employed as a "Work Comp Doctor" who only cares about making them get back to work. When injured workers feel like I care about their concerns, I find that most people want to get better.

What changes or improvements do you feel you can bring to the workers' compensation industry?

The workers' compensation industry would benefit by getting injured workers seen by a specialist as quickly as possible. I find that when patients with hand, wrist, and elbow injuries get seen by me shortly after injury, it is much easier to get them better and back to full duty faster. When injured workers have excessive delays in treatment or are initially treated with multiple visits to a nonspecialist, I think that it creates a situation where an injured worker gets frustrated and less motivated.

What is your process for evaluating and treating patients?

My evaluation process is to review all previous medical records available before I see the patient. This allows me to listen to the patient and limits the need for the patient to recall all of the details of their previous care.

We can focus on examination of what the current complaints are. Whenever possible I try to come up with a specific diagnosis or diagnoses, then treat appropriately. If I am not certain of a diagnosis or if I think that there are secondary gain issues, I order the appropriate tests immediately to facilitate getting the right diagnosis. In most cases I find that you cannot appropriately treat if you do not have a diagnosis.

How do you find a balance between your work life and your home life?

I find the balance between my work life and home life by remembering what my priorities are. My work schedule takes up a lot of hours during the week. I have had children at home for almost my entire practice career. My wife and children understand that patient care sometimes comes first. However, I try to limit serving on hospital/surgery center committees, going to evening and weekend marketing events, and "hanging out with the boys" (golf, poker nights). I try to have dinner with my family every night. I am available for homework help and I am a "prop dad" and my daughters' dance competitions.

What's your biggest professional accomplishment to date?

My biggest professional accomplishment to date has been developing a reputation in the community as an outstanding orthopedic upper extremity specialist. I have won many awards, and I have been featured on television. However, nothing compares to having patients come to me for a new problem because I help them or their family member in the past.

What are the company's vision, mission, values, and culture?

My group, Orthopedic Center of South Florida, has been providing care for over 25 years. We have a team of orthopedic surgeons and provide podiatric and pain management services as well. We provide outstanding care to our community in Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties. We also have our own therapy department and MRI machine. Our practice is very stable. We value having physicians stay, and there is very little turnover in our practice.

Except for retirement, no physicians have left the practice in my six years with the group.

What Makes Your Practice Unique?

My practice is unique in that I am very accessible, and I am very accommodating to seeing patients on short notice if necessary. Another unique part of my practice is that I provide minimally-invasive, ultrasound-guided trigger finger releases in the office. This involves a procedure which requires no sutures and is performed in the office in about 10-15 minutes.

What strategies do you use to make sure you clearly communicate your message to everyone involved?

I fill out the DWC-25 Form immediately after seeing any workers' compensation patient. I let the patient know what work restrictions I am putting on the form, so that there are no surprises when they receive their work restrictions. If I order a test or a treatment and it is not done, I will contact the adjuster or case manager to find out why this has not occurred. I find that effective communication leads to better outcomes and happier adjusters, case managers, doctors, and patients.

What final thoughts would you share with those in workers' compensation?

I think that workers' compensation patients events get an unnecessarily bad reputation. My experience has been that most patients have a real injury and want to get better. When the adjuster, case manager, and I are all working together effectively, we can get most injured workers better quickly.

FINDING GRACE THROUGH INTELLIGENCE WRITTEN BY KERSTIE BLUE I’m guessing your eyes are going to quickly glance over this article, wondering if it is worth your time, before ultimately deciding to keep reading because I read your mind.

Possibly. So many of us navigate incredibly overly-busy lives, driven by an organized chaos that we know and, dare I say, love. In order to survive, we’ve become experts at identifying what is and is not worth our time.

But are these judgments of worth made accurately? Are we investing our time in a way that will deliver lasting value to us? At times it looks like few of us are in it for the long haul.

Could it be that we feel so much insecurity and doubt about a bright future that we only deem tasks with immediate results worth our time?

Nobody can predict the future with 100% certainty, but we (the collective humanity) seem to live in a state of impending doom. Of course, this mentality just adds to the organized chaos we seem to be addicted to.

In reality, Americans are living the most physically comfortable lives in history while dealing with the highest prolonged levels of clinical anxiety, stress, and depression in history. Why is that? Why is it that our most intelligent, logical, and scientific advancements are not able to produce our happiest, most peaceful lives ever?

I’ve contemplated this question for a long time, and I think the answer is simple: We’ve lost our ability to live life wisely.The majority of our day depends on our ability to operate our minds intelligently. Some of us also engage our bodies intelligently through exercise, which we agree on an institutional level is necessary for longevity. But, we seem to have completely pushed out the fact that humans have a soul, or spirit, that also needs to be incorporated intelligently.

The mind, body, and soul together create a trio that, when properly balanced, enables us to live our most happy, most peaceful, most joyous lives.

So how do we find the proper balance?

And how do we even use our souls “intelligently,” anyway?

In that spirit, before I go, I would love to leave you with a vision of possibility.

What if when you wake up tomorrow morning, everything feels effortless?

At the exact time you need to start your day, your eyes flutter open gracefully.

The perfect amount of morning sunlight streams into your bedroom, allowing your vision to awake seamlessly. You take a full-body stretch and inhale deeply, with a smile on your face, before calmly stepping out of bed to start your morning routine. You feel no grogginess, no pain, no strife, no tension toward anything you encounter.

Your day is beginning perfectly – there is plenty of time to accomplish your morning to-dos. You don’t even feel like you need a coffee to get going! No reason to rush, no reason to hurry. No arguments or non-cooperation from those around you. You wonder how it was never this easy before.

Pulling up your email, a full inbox doesn’t send you into panic mode today. Casually, you click through and recognize that everything is being handled by the appropriate team members. Your body is relaxed and your mind is focused.

Yesterday’s unresolved dilemmas are so much clearer today.

One at a time, you effortlessly complete your highest priority items feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment. You’re in the zone and have accomplished a great deal already today.

Everything will be completed on time and accurately, no doubt about it. Your team is supportive, encouraging, and understanding.

You are delighted to be a vital part of such a buzzing organization. You experience no frustration towards any interactions with people that would have previously would have set you off. You feel completely calm and in control. You are going to have an incredible day, no matter what. You know it and feel it.

AA wise life feels like peaceful, calm, graceful existence. The path to achieving it, like I said, is unique to everyone, but through this quarterly column, I’m going to guide you on your way to attaining it the best I can. In the weeks between magazine publication, I’m going to be on the BLOOM platform to share with you the same processes and prompts that I lead my clients through. I am very excited to be a member of the BLOOM Board along with Mari Diaz, Samantha Diaz, Anailis Diaz, and Dr. Claire Muselman. What a fabulous dynamic team!

There will be lots of exclamation points here! I just can’t help myself! This is why…

Mari and I first met late 2014 when she came to NeuLife Rehabilitation so we could discuss a potential agreement between NeuLife and OM. I was impressed that she and Ozzy brought their children, who were teens at the time. Seeing NeuLife up close is educational and enlightening for anyone.

In their case, the outcome data and brain and spinal cord injury statistics shared with them made an impact. What Mari and Ozzy recalled of that meeting was passion, kindness, drive, and commitment.

NeuLife really touched them.

What I instinctively sensed from Mari and Ozzy that day were family values, respect, solid business acumen, and a great deal of common sense. Most important to me was their clear need to understand fully and believe in whatever company, and the people (the WHO), they were considering representing. So, while I was considering OM’s services for NeuLife, Mari and Ozzy were considering whether or not they wanted to work with and represent NeuLife Rehabilitation and my team!

Integrity!!! Connection! Values! Ability! We ALL wanted to make a difference! It didn’t take long for us to enter into an agreement! The rest is our history with MANY great stories to share!

Mari openly discussed with me her vision and dream for a beautiful unique, and impactful magazine specifically for a wide range of professionals working within the workers’ compensation industry. Her list (which she showed me!) included claims administrators, adjusters, risk managers, nurse case managers, healthcare and rehabilitation professionals, employers, brokers, providers of healthcare services such as DME, home care, transportation, and more. Wow! Mari was excited just talking about her vision for the magazine. She wanted it to be about the people in workers’ compensation, who they are personally, recognizing them, and providing them with information of significance to them. Amazingly, in 2014 Mari even knew what she wanted on the cover of the first edition! I’ve been sworn to secrecy going on eight years now!

Mari will be the first one to tell anyone that BLOOM is the result of many people cheering and supporting her, helping her, mentoring her (mentoring never stops – it’s not age-or-success-related), and brainstorming! Each person shares fresh ideas and suggestions, opinions and thoughts, and has proposed solutions to elicit change for the better!

BLOOM is Mari’s dream and vision realized and supported by Mari’s Village!

It's no secret that having a positive mindset is key to success. When you're feeling down, it's tough to stay motivated and achieve your goals. STEP ONE: SET REALISTIC GOALS. It's important to have goals that you can realistically achieve. If your goal is too lofty, you may get discouraged when you don't reach it. STEP TWO: MAKE A POSITIVE AFFIRMATION. An affirmation is a positive statement that you repeat to yourself. By repeating an affirmation, you will program your mind to believe it. Choose an affirmation that speaks to you and repeat it to yourself throughout the day. For example, "I am worthy of love and happiness."

STEP THREE: VISUALIZE YOUR SUCCESS. A visualization is a powerful tool that can help you achieve your goals. When you visualize yourself achieving your goal, you program your mind to believe possible. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Then, imagine yourself achieving your goal. See yourself in the future, living the life you want.

STEP FOUR: TAKE ACTION. To achieve your goal, you need to take action. Make a plan and take small steps each day to move closer to your goal. Remember, even the smallest step is progress! Without taking action, your goal is nothing more than a dream.

STEP FIVE: STAY POSITIVE. It's easy to get discouraged when things don't go your way.

However, it's important to stay positive and have a can-do attitude. When you're feeling down, take a few minutes to reflect on all the good things that have happened in your life.

Shift your focus from the negative to the positive, and you will start to feel better.

If so, then this mini-guide is for you! In today's blog post, we will discuss the importance of setting boundaries and how to say no respectfully and assertively. We'll also provide some tips on dealing with difficult situations when you need to say no.

So whether you're struggling with saying no to your friends or family members, or if you're finding it difficult to set boundaries at work, we've got you covered!

Saying no can be challenging, especially if you're a people pleaser. We often feel guilty or selfish when we turn someone down, but it's important to remember that you have a right to say no. Just because someone asks you for a favor doesn't mean you have to do it. Sometimes saying no is the kindest thing you can do. If you're overworked and stressed out, for example, saying no to additional commitments can be a way of taking care of yourself.

In this article, we will be discussing coffee shops in Italy. We'll cover everything from the history of Italian coffee to the different types of coffee drinks that are popular in Italy. So whether you're planning a trip to Italy or just want to learn more about Italian coffee culture, this article is for you!

As a coffee lover, my philosophy is you really know a place is good if they have good coffee. So if you're looking for a good cup of coffee in Italy, where should you go?

There are a few different types of coffee shops in Italy. The first type is the bar, which is what most people think of when they think of an Italian coffee shop. Bars are typically small and informal, and they serve coffee drinks that are meant to be consumed quickly. The second type of coffee shop is the cafeteria formal, which is a bit more than the bar. Caffetterias typically have a wider selection of coffee drinks and snacks, and they're a great place to sit down and relax with a book or newspaper. The third type of coffee shop is the pasticceria, which is a pastry shop that also serves coffee. Wake up early Wake up early and take some time for yourself. Spend a few minutes stretching, breathing deeply, and enjoying quiet time. Just before sunrise, Nature is filled with pure and positive (called sattvic) energies that bring the senses peace of mind and freshness.

Drink Warm Water Water stored overnight in a copper bottle is purified and alkalized naturally. Before doing anything else, drink copper water, which can rebalance the body and mind. Copper is an essential trace element that is vital for all living things and has an active role in many body functions. Warm water with lemon & honey may also be a suitable replacement for caffeinated drinks.

Tongue scraper and brush Brush your teeth with a bitter or astringent toothpaste/powder (not a sweet one as this promotes bacteria) and clean your tongue with a tongue scraper. Tongue cleaning is an essential part of the self-care rituals in Ayurveda. In Ayurveda, the health of your tongue is a reflection of your overall health. So tongue scraping will remove the white coating (toxins and dead bacteria) on your tongue, improve oral hygiene, remove bad breath and help overall digestion.

Oil pull Ditch the toxic mouthwash and swish one tbs of coconut oil in your mouth for a few minutes (10mins if possible) and spit it out in the food waste (oil clogs pipes). Oil pulling is said to 'pull' bacteria from the mouth, remove bad breath, prevent cavities, strengthen teeth, gums, and jaw while improving the sense of taste.

Elimination What goes in must come out. Elimination is the key to optimal health.

Drinking copper water will help you urinate but help to trigger bowel movements. Ayurveda recommends evacuating all your waste to jumpstart your day feeling lighter, healthier, and relaxed. If you are not eliminating daily, be sure your diet includes plenty of fluids and fiber.

Self-massage on the abdomen and deep, slow breathing into the belly is a great way to stimulate a bowel movement gently. If you struggle to set a routine, try taking two capsules or 1 tsp Triphala before bedtime or as per your Ayurvedic practitioner's advice.

Self-massage or Abhyanga Performing a self-massage is an essential part of the Ayurvedic routine and the best form of self-love.

Benefits It nourishes and strengthens the body, improves blood circulation, delays the aging process (improves wrinkles, cellulite, and scarring), stimulates lymphatic drainage, helps detoxification, lubricates joints, and stimulates internal organs. It is very grounding for Vata and Pitta and promoting for Kapha. It also helps lower stress levels and lower heart rate and potentially blood pressure levels.

Make your breakfast.

Try to eat a balanced meal with protein, healthy fats, and complex carbs.

Spend some time outside in Nature.

Take a walk or sit in the sun for at least 15 minutes.

This will help to ground you and connect you with Nature.

Do some gentle yoga or stretching exercises.

This will help to energize your body and prepare you for the day ahead. Meditate for at least 15 minutes.

This will help to calm and focus your mind.

It is time to Dream BIG - even if it feels impossible. You are in the driver's seat of your own life; invest in your growth, keep healthy boundaries- it's okay to say NO. Make health your number one priority, do what you love, know your values, live your purpose, never stop learning, surround yourself with inspiring people, align with your needs, and show up as your highest self. Identify what is and is no longer serving you, and recognize that rejection is protecting and redirection - sometimes, the universe likes to play games with us, and often, these games are for the greater good! Don't worry about what other people think of you, focus on joy, purpose, and passion. And always remember, failure is a stepping stone to success. The list goes on. YOU CHOOSE what's most important for you. Every day, every hour, every moment, every step you take.
