Meet Dr. Tosca Kinchelow written by Melissa Diaz

Meet Doctor Tosca Kinchelow, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who has been working in private practice within the South Florida area since 2007. She is a proud mother of 4 and is a New Jersey native. Dr. Kinchelow attended Duke University as an undergraduate. She then attended Michigan State College of Human Medicine as a medical student and was awarded a research fellowship.

After receiving her Doctor of Medicine degree, Dr. Kinchelow returned to her home state of New Jersey and completed a Residency in Orthopedic Surgery, a year of Orthopedic Research, and a Hand and Microvascular Surgery fellowship at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Kinchelow is also bilingual, as she spent time living, studying, and volunteering in Bolivia, France, and Costa Rica before, during, and after college.

My goal is to not only properly diagnose & treat my patients' orthopedic conditions but, with an energetic & straight forward style, also empower them and guide them to participate in their regeneration, restoration, and recovery.

Dr. Kinchelow says that it was during her medical school years that she discovered her passion for orthopedic surgery. “I felt compelled to further my education in this area,” she explains. ”I had a mentor in college who told me I should get into Ortho hand and sports but at that time I wanted to get into plastic surgery instead because I liked the reconstructive side of it, however, I ended up finding a passion for orthopaedics.” Dr. Kinchelow is proud to have opened her own private practice, The Orthopaedic Hand and Arm Center. With her mission to provide excellent orthopaedic care for hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder problems through education, empowerment, engagement, and execution. To do that, Dr. Kinchelow engages with her patients through transparent communication and education about the diagnosis, so she can recommend and provide patients with the most effective treatment options.

What is Dr. Kinchelow’s WHY? She says, “God has blessed me with the ability to have this career, to do this job, to take care of people. Every day, my patients look to me and trust me to treat their orthopedic issues and guide them to a place of healing. It is an honor to help them, and I want to fulfill my responsibility by pushing myself to be better and more excellent.” Early in her career, Dr. Kinchelow says she may have focused more on getting an injury to 'recover perfectly.'

“Now, I still do want to strive for 'perfect' or 'complete' healing and recovery, but not for perfection's sake. I want my patients to heal perfectly for them, for their wants and requirements in life,” says the doctor.

“I try to empower all of my patients to be active participants in their care. Being injured at work does not remove the responsibility each patient has to engage in her/his care, including being proactive in their treatment. Mindset is key, and the more proactive and participatory the patient is, and the more realistic the expectations, the better the clinical outcome, even when the pre-injury range of motion, strength, etc. are not fully achieved.”

What is your leadership philosophy?

Patient are our customers. Physicians are our heroes. The rest of us are here to make both satisfied with their experience and give them the support they need.

What's the story behind the practice? How did the practice begin?

The practice was started decades ago by a handful of physicians that shared a philosophy of great patient care, sharing best practices and providing a well-rounded group of physicians that could address all orthopedic issues under one-roof.

What are the practice's vision, mission, values, and culture?

Our vision is to continue to grow into markets that could use our services to improve the health and activity of that community.

What strategies does your practice use to make sure you communicate your message to everyone involved?

The doctor-patient relationship is sacrosanct regardless of whether the injury happened on the job or not. Every patient is treated as an individual receiving a customized approach.

Depending on the care needed, the right specialist will get involved. The patient will always be informed of their injury and best treatment plans. We know Case Managers have a tough job. They juggle so many balls in the air. We try our best to communicate with them directly when they attend office visits or through forms, paperwork, and medical record notes to give them the necessary information. We have a couple of dedicated services to WC. One includes our intake department and our WC liaisons. They act as our schedulers and work with the Case Managers and Adjusters through the process until MMI. We also have a dedicated revenue cycle team allowing specialization in WC to minimize claims issues.

As a Program Manager, I handle multiple hats. In addition, I am a mother and a member of ministry leadership.

However, this is part of my life.

What is the most rewarding part of what you do?

The relationships with other people and to be able to serve.

What was the last thing you did for yourself?

A spa day, I do not have many of these, it was very relaxing.

What three words describe the strengths you're most proud of?

Outgoing, organized (creating systems that will minimize the workload and increase efficiency), and meticulous in my research.

Fearless, servant, and bossy (the last one is just my family.

What current book you're reading?

Have several since I am currently studying at the Bible Institute.

I’m very much looking forward to my monthly massage.

5 words to describe what self-care means to you?

I drink lots of water, I work out via a run or spin 3-4 times per week, I meal prep, so there is dinner always ready to pop in the microwave (this helps prevent overeating), Vitamins/Green Compass CBD, and REST. Yes, I know that was more than 5 words.

Morning bird or night owl?

Neither, I hate getting out of bed, but I’m also usually asleep by 10:00 pm.

Tell us a bit about what you do?

I am the Director of Business Development for CORA Physical Therapy.

What motivates you to come into work every day?

The motivator is “passion” not only that we CORA is delivering the care that everyone deserves within the community. Also, being able to provide a service to my clients and their injured workers.

What does a typical week in your work look like?

Travel every other week, sending emails, setting up meetings and on conference calls. Sounds boring.. Ha ha, but very challenging due to not enough time to do all. You have to prioritize.

How long have you been doing it?

Over 12 years- WOW, how time flies when you love what you do.

What kind of projects are you working on right now?

Besides continuously working on my health and well-being. I am working on our expansion of CORA. What's your favorite part of the job?

I love this question, as someone asked me do you like traveling that much and it is very challenging? Yes, this is very challenging as I am away from my family, home and my significant other. The pro about it is that I get to meet new people and see different parts of this beautiful country. Some of these lovely individuals and places have made such an impact not only personally, but professionally. I learn so much, which is the best part of my job.

The beauty of it is that I get “growth” out of this.

As a woman leader managing a team of professionals, what are your main challenges?

Different personalities and having to adapt to each one. The skillset that you must adapt and apply to each individual.

How do you think being a woman impacts your leadership style?

Being a woman in any industry has been challenging, at the same time we have such traits that enhances our leadership styles, such as nurture & being able to be empathetic.

Did you always want to work in this field?

No, I did not. I have been told at an early stage in my life, but never truly saw it within me, as I was not confident at all. With time and surrounding yourself around others that can personally affect you in a positive light professionally, has helped me morph into this field.

What do you see as the major issues/trends in the field today?

The past 2 ½ years has transformed the office space into a “home” space environment, which has been very challenging to see many of our stakeholders.

What are your hobbies?

Cleaning! Call me crazy, but I love doing this, as this is my outlet because when I am done, it satisfies me tremendously.

How do you find balance with your work life and your home life?

I know people try their best to balance this, but we are so unsuccessful. We must learn to value not only family, individual time, but to incorporate your health, which this means not only physical, but a mental one. This has been challenging for me and I am sure many others, but we must make time for us, family, friends and vacations!

We must be confident enough to do such and I wish that we had more women do such instead of the opposite and truly mean to be a support.

Eric J. Balaguer, MD Tell us a little about yourself and who you are?

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The son of Joaquin Balaguer and the US Army general, and Leila Balaguer, a small business owner. I am the youngest of 3 siblings. Liselle is the oldest, currently living in Puerto Rico after she retired from American Airlines, and Joaquin currently practices in Puerto Rico as a foot and ankle surgeon. When I was very young, I started playing sports, and virtually no sport was offered on the island that he had not tried. Even to this day, I remain active in multiple sports. Since an early age, I have had a great interest in surgery. Will frequently steal my brother's biological kit and enjoyed repairing my stuffed animals.

After graduating high school, I left the island to embark on my first journey as I started my bachelor's degree in biology at The Ohio State University. It was then that I had my first test in adversity as I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma at the age of 19. After I overcame my illness, I resume my studies and started medical school back in Puerto Rico. There, I had the chance to help my brother as he was starting his own practice, going to the operating room with the orthopedic residents when I had time off, but most importantly, spend good quality time with my parents as this was the last period in my life that I would leave under their roof.

Once I graduated from medical school, I decided to take a position at Columbia University's orthopedic research laboratory. It was the end when I met who will be 1 of my very good friends and current practice partner Dr. Mauricio Herrera. 2 years later, I started my internship followed by my residency training in surgery. Once again, my training was interrupted by another adverse event, this time being non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Thanks to resilience, support for my family and friends and a lot of prayer, I was able to once again overcome this horrible disease. After recovered from my treatment, I was able to finally finish my residency training.

My next chapter took place here in the city of Miami as I became a fellow of hand and upper extremity surgery at the orthopedic department of University of Miami. I fell in love with the city and after consulting with my wife, we both decided that this is where we were going to raise our family.

I did have to go back to New York to work and wait for my wife to finish her training and soon as she did, We moved permanently to Miami. Joined the Miami Hand Institute, where I spent 7 years practicing before moving to the Miami Institute for Joint Reconstruction. I was very happy to join my good friend, Dr. Herrera as well like Dr. Corces, Dr. Rajadhyaksha, Dr. Font and the other partners of the group.

What is your “why?” What inspires you every day to do more/better?

My family inspires me. I am fortunate to have married a brilliant, talented surgeon who is the mother of three beautiful 7-year-old boys. They are my role models, and I aim to be both a better person and a better professional every day so that they will become great members of society. Also, my profession is beautiful because you never become a true master of your knowledge and skills; you learn something new every day and strive to be better than before.

What is the most challenging part about your job?

The most challenging part of my job is the multiple roadblocks I face when caring for patients. Sometimes it comes from insurance companies, sometimes from family members, and sometimes from the patients themselves. I am an ethical and honest physician who works hard to gain patients' trust because of what other doctors have done in the past.

What is your philosophy in treating a WC patient?

I treat my patients the same way I treat my athletes. Because of this, I've found that it's essential to start treating Worker's Compensation patients early and aggressively to get them back to work as soon as possible with the minimum amount of disability possible. It's also essential to let them know that they will recover and be able to return to everyday activities before the injury.

What would it be if you could change one thing about the WC industry?

I think we should have better communication with the adjusters. It is very important for patients to get the care they need as fast as they need in the right place. That can only be accomplished with good communication between the doctor and the adjuster.

Orthopaedics is unique because patients typically present with an issue significantly affecting their lives. I usually have a solution that not only relieves their pain but also gets them back to doing what they want to do.

I love to play golf and would play every day if I could.

What is your “why?” What inspires you every day to do more/better?

Excellent patient care. I treat every patient like they are my mother, brother, dad, and son, I imagine how I would want my loved one to be treated and try to do my best for every patient to provide the utmost excellence in patient care.

Take us back to when you first began in medicine what was it like for you?

Both terrifying and exciting. It is truly a privilege to take care of a patient. It takes a lot of sacrifices and can be very stressful at times, but it is also exciting and rewarding to be able to help a patient in their biggest time of need.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not working?

Spend time with family and play golf.

What is the most challenging part about your job?

Not every situation in medicine is black and white.

There are certainly a lot of grays. Some problems have no great solutions, and some have multiple solutions.

Sometimes it takes knowledge, experience, and instinct to come up with a good solution that is the best for the patient.

What does an average day look like for you?

Some days I see patients in the office, and some days, I am in the OR. What is your philosophy when treating injured workers?

I use my subspecialty sports medicine training to help me manage injured workers. With athletes, the goal is to get them back to playing their sport as quickly and as safely as possible. This is the same concept for treating injured workers; get them back to work and live their lives as quickly and safely as possible.

What would you say is the most unique part of your specialty?

I love my job and getting the chance to heal employees so they can again be productive on the job and in their personal lives. If they have been injured at work, it’s important that I understand the mechanism of injury and how it occurred on the job. Communication is a big part of my role – how did it happen, and how do we prevent it from happening again? Timely communication with the HR representative, the Safety Manager, and the adjustors and case managers is essential. All the stakeholders must be on the same page. I even like to see a job description so that when I return that employee to work, I know his or her tasks.

What is your philosophy when treating injured workers?

First and foremost: Listen to the patient. Understand their job and the mechanism of injury. Communicate with their employer to ensure we are all on the same page. Order appropriate studies and treatment. Get them back to their job position as quickly and as safely as possible!

My family! I want them to be proud of me. I want to be a good role model for my daughter. I am dedicated to healing, and I get great pleasure from being able to help my patients and employers.

What is the most challenging part about your job?

Helping the patients navigate the workers’ comp system.

Getting patients back to work quickly and safely. Make sure all of the “I”s are dotted, and the “t”s are crossed in our notes and DWC-25s, so everyone has accurate information and can be proactive with the case.

What final thoughts would you share with those in workers’ compensation?

Treat your patients the way you would want your own family to be treated. Be sure you are fair with the injured worker and their employer. Employers shouldn’t be expected to cover injuries that were not theirs – but if the injury happened at work, they should provide the necessary care. Employers should also show care and concern for hurt employees – that level of empathy goes a long way.

What is the best way to reach you and your staff?

I’m still old school and like speaking on the phone. We have a great client service team under the direction of Zach Rosenthal (786-218-8253) and Max Topper (305-439-4165).

They can always be the first point of contact when clients need to speak with a doctor or office manager. The managers of our five medical centers are also easy to reach and available. There shouldn’t be difficultly getting to know a staff member.

Can People Have Back Pain Without Significant MRI Findings? written by Raviinder Parmar, MD Back pain is very common. Studies show that this is among the top 5 reasons adults visit their primary care doctors.

Many common causes of back pain don’t show up on MRI There are a variety of common causes of back pain. Some of these will generally be visible on an MRI, including herniated spinal discs and fractures of the vertebrae, which are the small bones of the spine. However, there are also many that may not cause MRI findings, including: Muscle strain. The damage to a muscle from muscle strain is generally not visible on an MRI. However, this type of injury can lead to severe symptoms, such as pain and stiffness.

Ligament strain or other soft tissue injuries.

Similarly to muscle strain, these injuries will generally not cause significant MRI findings, but the symptoms that they cause can be severe.

Osteoarthritis of the joints between the vertebrae.

Osteoarthritis is the degenerative, wear-and-tear type of arthritis that commonly occurs with aging. Signs of osteoarthritis can appear on an MRI, especially in more advanced stages; however, MRI has been shown to miss more than a third of osteoarthritis cases. If a patient’s pain is caused by osteoarthritis, it might not be seen on the MRI. Should an MRI be done for back pain?

It’s not uncommon for patients to request an MRI for back pain. They often hope that a treatable cause of their pain will be found. They also often believe that MRI findings will validate their pain experience. Similarly, those financially involved in the patient’s care may want an MRI to validate the patient’s pain claims.

However, it’s important to recognize that back pain doesn’t always lead to significant MRI findings. Even if a person with back pain has a normal MRI, this doesn’t at all invalidate their claim of back pain.

The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends against using imaging in patients with low back pain in the first six weeks unless certain red flags are present. This is because the MRI won’t show many common causes of back pain. In addition, most cases of low back pain get better on their own within six weeks without intervention.

How do you know if someone is malingering?

In some cases of back pain, there’s a need to prove that a particular patient is in significant pain. For example, when deciding whether to prescribe pain medications, clinicians may want to be sure that these are truly warranted. Insurance and worker’s compensation adjusters may also want to be sure that a patient truly has pain.

Pain is a perception caused by the nervous system. Although pain can be correlated to tissue damage, high pain levels can also occur without major tissue damage or after the damage has healed. It’s also possible to have tissue damage without pain.

Unfortunately, there’s no scientific way to measure pain.

Because patients can have back pain without significant findings on an MRI, it’s not possible to use MRI findings to determine whether or not a patient legitimately has pain. It’s nearly impossible for medical professionals to distinguish between malingering and legitimate pain, particularly in the setting of an injury that could conceivably have led to pain.

So, how did Ms. Horton get into the Worker’s Compensation arena? “When news of an EF4 tornado hit my hometown in Tennessee, I was offered a position to work with the city as its Hazard Mitigation Consultant. Once this project was completed, I was offered the position of Risk Manager, which I accepted. I joined the public risk managers association in Tennessee and became president of that organization which was extremely worthwhile.” In 2012, Horton moved on and became the Director of Claims at the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation in Ohio for about six years before moving to sunny Florida where she began as the Risk Manager for the City of Tampa.

When asked, ‘What has been your favorite part of your career?’ Horton says, “Across everything that I have done, I have worked in the community. You take every single job that I have ever had, and you see that I have reached back out to the community. I don’t care what city it was, if I was doing real-estate development, or if I was working with people from the community doing risk management, I was working with the community overall. Here, I do a lot of things that are internal but as a whole, this office touches the employees and their families. That has been probably the one thing I have enjoyed the most about all of it. I have been able to help the community.” Valerie has always been about the community. In 2005, she stared an organization called Mothers 2 Daughters.

“It came about as the result of my interaction with the sister of two of my childhood friends. I saw her in the grocery store and asked how she was. Sadly, she told me her son was in prison, she was raising his children, and she just didn’t have enough. I was in tears. I decided to try to do something for my community.”

Horton quickly realized that there were a lot of women out there who were struggling with all kinds of issues. They needed an outlet and Valerie was determined to help her community. “I started Tea and Talk. I was doing small events to get these women together. I was reaching out to women ages 8 to 80 and hosting community events. We would have discussions about issues and things that were impacting them in the community. I was doing a radio advertisement about an upcoming event and the Radio General Manager asked me if I had ever done radio. Of course, I said no, and that question turned into me doing Radio. We were having these conversations on the show and talking about it as a community. That radio show then turned into a regional TV show.” As she journeys through her own personal life, Valerie not only looks for things that make her smile but the things that can make others smile.

“I own a small business and it helps make others smile. I own a travel business that I started in 2017. I have a small team of travel agents that work alongside of me. I book travel for the community. I have learned so much about the world because of the exposure. I know most people want to travel, but either they can’t afford it or they just don’t have the time. It’s a little sad but I have figured out ways to help them.” Valerie believes travel is essential to our well-being! She will take time to work with you to plan your dream vacation! “I love living. I know that sounds cliché-ish but I think that every single day that we wake up and we are able to open our eyes it gives us an opportunity to do good things, to explore, to connect to other people, to love and enjoy each other, nature. This may sound simplistic, but how many times would an issue be resolved if someone had just asked why when it occurred? Lastly, we take ownership of our work on the file, but we know the person who handles the most responsibility for the direction, and the cost of the file is the claims person. They have an ultimate say in what path they will choose to handle their files.

DIFFUSE ESSENTIAL OILS Not only do some studies show that essential oils can lower cortisol levels, spark energy, or cleanse the air of toxins, but they also smell really freaking good! And they totally set the mood for starting your day. Consider diffusing energizing scents like peppermint or orange and see if that feels good! It certainly can't hurt. If you share your space with others who aren't fans, use the oils on your skin (wrists or temples) for a boost when needed.

SIMPLIFY YOUR SPACE If you're one of those people with 12 notepads on your desk, listen up: that's clutter! And clutter is a quick road to unnecessary stress and unorganized biz. That's why we love our 90-day planner. It's everything you need for goal setting, jotting down notes, and setting your schedule all in one place (among several other amazing resources!). You can kiss those other notebooks goodbye…or at least save them in an organized drawer! The same goes for any other paperwork clutter on your desk. Find a way to simplify that stuff, and you'll immediately open up more brain space for the good stuff!

THE 2-MINUTE RULE Before you end work for the day, take 2 minutes to clear your desk. Bring that lingering coffee cup down, shut down windows on your computer, and even take this time to sanitize your devices 1x a week. That way, you'll start your mornings with a clean slate and won't have to worry about cleaning your desk each a.m. Wake up, build your empire, and repeat!

BACKGROUND NOISE We're only talking about noise from the dog barking or loud music if that's conducive to your productivity. We're talking about some sense of calming white noise or music to drown out outside noises that may be a distraction.

You might have heard of ‘the Mozart effect' in which a study shows that listening to classical music can improve your brain and increase productivity. There's actually a lot of music shown to do that, and it's one way to set a vibe in your working space. Spotify has an entire ‘Focus' category, from Piano to Spa Music to French Café. Then there's Nosili, a site we think is genius, especially with so many people working from home during the pandemic! Noisli is a site that lets you customize your background noise. With options from the chatter of a coffee shop to nature sounds, you can choose whatever feels best to you depending on your task!

By the way, noise-canceling headphones are another must when you need to buckle down and focus. They're great if you're sharing an office with others, too!

POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS Find ways to add positive affirmations to your space to boost your mood and confidence surrounding work. Maybe it’s your favorite quote as the background of your computer, a cute mug, or a vision board you have hanging. Or maybe it's as simple as a post-it note you've left for yourself.

An Ode to Winter

WRITTEN BY SAMANTHA DIAZ The days grow shorter and the nights longer as winter approaches. During the winter, we have time to set intentions that manifest into greater peace, love, and happiness. The holidays are a time to celebrate simple pleasures with family and friends when we can reflect and be grateful for what the year has brought us.

Hibernation and turning inwards are big themes for the winter. We focus on setting intentions for the next season and how to gear up for success. If we view nature objectively, as the leaves have died and are waiting to be reborn, as animals hibernate or sleep through winter months—it is a period of rest during which all living things rejuvenate themselves.

During this time, we also have more time for self-care. This is the optimal time to take naps, do some extra beauty routines and journal your heart out—all activities that will increase our energy flow as we shift from seasons. The ritual of Winter is a celebration that connects us to nature and allows us to reflect on the past while looking forward.

LET’S TALK BOUNDARIES. WILL YOU INDULGE? written by Kerstie Blue I wasn’t fond of a popular phrase in the world of coaching when I first heard it: “The way you show up in one area is the way you show up in every area.” When you first hear it, if it doesn’t immediately ring true for you, it’ll go in one ear and out the other. You’re telling me my issue that I can’t stop eating when I’m full has anything to do with the amount of work on my plate? And the constant fights with my partner because they don’t appreciate me have anything to do with eating too much dessert? Yeah, right. But honestly, yes. Only now, over a year after first hearing the phrase, can I understand the interrelation of these three seemingly unrelated events. If the three situations above – overeating, being overworked, and constantly playing defense against your partner – apply to you, then you’ll hear exactly what I’m about to say.

Let’s get straight into it. Are you ready? Consider the boundaries you hold for yourself in each area of your life: a. Health b. Relationship c. Work Consider the consistency with which you enforce said boundaries. a. Daily or weekly b. Before the boundaries are crossed c. After the boundaries are crossed The way you show up in one area is the way you show up in all areas, which in the specific scenario above would mean that you don’t keep boundaries in place to protect yourself, but instead suffer the consequences of things that you can’t seem to have any control over. In the case of overeating: you (rather mindlessly) continue to snack because it’s just so easy. It tastes good and seems to lift your mood. There are only a few more bites… so you finish them anyway. Don’t want to let it go to waste! Meanwhile, you aren’t aware of it, but your stomach is full. Your body is ready to stop eating, but it gets stuffed with one more bite. It’s reached its limit. A few minutes later, you’re feeling massively full. You didn’t respect the boundary of the capacity of your stomach. You chose to push yourself over the edge because you rationalized the last few bites, which are the equivalent of cents on the dollar, are worth more than the feeling of being satisfied but not sick.

In the case of being overworked: your day is full of to-do items that all need to be done yesterday.

These items were tasked to you by your boss, so surely, they know your plate is full. Oh, but here’s an email with yet another thing that needs done… by the end of the day. Awesome, now your whole schedule is messed up, and you have to work through dinner yet again. You don’t know that your boss is distracted by some health issues and doesn’t realize how much is on your plate. They assumed that since you’ve been producing so much lately, you’re an incredible machine and can handle anything. This last-minute item should be no problem because they think you’re so good at managing your schedule. Since you don’t often ask for help prioritizing or shifting tasks to others on the team, from the boss’s perspective, you’re incredibly dedicated.

In the case of fighting with your partner: you help your partner by doing little tasks that create massive efficiencies in their day, like making their meals, putting away their laundry, and keeping track of their appointments. You’re already doing these things yourself, so that’s just a little more. It’s not like it takes you that long…but it does mean you didn’t have time to sit down today or to take that bath you were daydreaming about. Come to think of it, many of the things you don’t get to do are direct because you spend your time doing things that capable adults could do for themselves. Your partner feels so supported when you have their back for the things they can’t get to. They appreciate the generosity of your time and wonder what they can do to help you.

You seem to have everything covered, and they are hard-pressed to find an opportunity to lend a hand.

They’re not aware that you’re tired and sacrificing so much because they see their strong, capable partner that’s the glue of the household. They don’t want to disrupt the flow of what seems to be working well.

Why fix something that’s not broken? In each of these situations, there’s an assumption on your part that everything is on your shoulders. You are the one who must sacrifice, and it’s not a huge deal: the one instance of overeating, working late, or taking care of someone else’s responsibilities is an easy choice at the moment – just do it. But what happens when you “just do it” one time too much? When you can’t take it. Enough is enough.

Boundaries are meant to be proactive protection so that life remains in balance. If you’re finding yourself fed up with something, odds are, there’s a pattern in your life – you’re not taking an active role in advocating for your well-being across the board.

Consider other areas in your life where boundaries may be overstepped or maybe even non-existent.

Philadelphia is one of America's most historic cities, a lively city offering something for everyone—from art museums and historical sites to delicious foods, recreational parks, sports stadiums, and churches.

Home to a diverse food scene and charming neighborhoods, it's also home to hundreds of museums & landmark buildings.

If you're planning a trip to Philadelphia and want to experience the best of what the city offers, look no further. In this blog, I'll give you all the details on where to go, what to see, and what to eat in Philly.

Independence Hall Independence Hall is one of the most important places in Philadelphia and an important part of U.S. history. Originally the Pennsylvania State House, Independence Hall was the Second Continental Congress meeting place, and the Declaration of Independence was signed here on July 4th, 1776. On any list of things to do in Philadelphia, booking a tour of Independence Hall is a must-do. The tour will take you into the hall where the founding fathers met and the room where they signed the Declaration of Independence. Tours of Independence Hall are free, but I recommend booking in advance. You can book in advance via the official government website, and the booking fee is $1.00 per person.

Elfreth’s Alley If you're in the Philadelphia area, go wander the oldest residential street in America. After visiting the Betsy Ross House, head down Elfreth's Alley. Elfreth's Alley contains houses dating back to 1728, and I really enjoyed exploring there. It was so cool to see how different each house is from one another and how much time has passed since they were built. There are also small alleyways behind many of the houses, and if you’d like to visit the Elfreth’s Alley Museum, it’s located at 124 & 126 and costs $3.

Eastern State Penitentiary If you’re into haunted places and the paranormal, the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia is for you. The 142-year-old prison has a history full of suicide, madness, disease, and murder, making it easy to imagine the spirits of troubled souls left behind to roam its abandoned halls. Take a tour of one of Philadelphia’s most distinctive attractions— the Eastern State Penitentiary. Opened in 1829, it housed notorious criminals such as Al Capone and Willie Sutton. Today it is an abandoned building that tells the story of its history. Tours at Eastern State Penitentiary are offered seven days a week and are included with regular admission, or you can join a guided tour at select times throughout the day. Audio tours last approximately 35 minutes, but guests can spend two hours exploring this historic site.

The Liberty Bell Center The Liberty Bell Center is one of the most iconic symbols of American independence. Originally housed in the steeple of Pennsylvania State House (now known as Independence Hall), it was rung for the first time in 1753 when it arrived in Philadelphia. However, within two years, it cracked when rung for July 4th celebrations and has been recast twice. The bell is displayed at the Liberty Bell Centre across from Independence Hall. It is free to visit and requires no tickets. As one of Philadelphia’s most popular tourist attractions, there is usually a long line to see it.

Betsy Ross House The Betsy Ross House is a must-see in Philadelphia. This small, quaint house sits on Arch Street and is where upholsterer Betsy Ross sewed the first design of the American flag.

President George Washington first approached Betsy in this house with a sketch of the original design. When asked if she could sew the flag, she replied, "I do not know, but I will try.""

During tours of this historic site, visitors learn about Betsy's role in creating what has become one of America's most important symbols. One thing that stood out during my visit was how easy it would have been for Betsy to make sixpointed stars instead of five-pointed ones—but that slight change saved her so much time!

Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site This red-brick home was once the residence of Edgar Allan Poe (18091849), one of America’s most original writers. While living with his wife, Virginia, and his mother-in-law, Maria Clemm, he wrote The Black Cat, which describes a basement eerily similar to the one found here. This building house exhibits Poe’s family and his literary contemporaries. Visitors can tour the rooms and cellar of the threestory home, where Poe’s imagination ran seductively wild. There's also a theater that shows an informative eight-minute film.

I highly recommend visiting Philadelphia for three days. The city is affordable for a major city, and there's so much to do. If you like Philly as much as I do, you'll probably want to stay longer! If you only have one day in the city, go for it; I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself.

And if you’re feeling adventurous, try walking instead of taking public transportation: with its compact layout and sidewalks on both sides of every street, Boston is perfect for pedestrians. In this Boston travel guide, I’ll be covering what to do. I’ll also highlight some of my city's favorite spots so you can enjoy all Boston offers!

Walk Along the Freedom Trail The Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile walking route through downtown Boston, Massachusetts. The path leads you to past attractions relating to the city's founding, as well as the events of the Revolutionary War. There are markers and signs along the way to help you follow the trail. The Freedom Trail begins in Boston Common, America's oldest public park, and ends at Bunker Hill Monument. You can pick up a map and guide at Faneuil Hall or the Boston Common Visitor Center at 139 Tremont Street. Admission is charged for some sites along the trail, but others are free.

Explore Beacon Hill Beacon Hill is one of the most charming areas in Boston, and Acorn Street might be the cutest street in the entire United States. You’ll find everything you love about a city on Beacon Hill—charm, history, beautiful architecture—all in a quaint neighborhood. When you visit Beacon Hill, you’ll feel like you’re stepping back in time with its cobblestone streets, gorgeous flower boxes, and beautiful brick-row homes. Although there are many great restaurants and cute shops in Beacon Hill, we recommend walking around the neighborhood to check out its beautiful homes. Acorn Street, Pinckney Street, Marlborough Street, and Myrtle Street are a few of our favorite streets to walk down. We think you'll discover that Beacon Hill has much more to offer than just food and shopping.

But the desire to bring more mindfulness into your life doesn't mean you have to sit still and count your breath for hours. It's about finding a way that suits you, whether 10 seconds, 10 minutes or a few hours a day. The choice is yours, and it all adds up.

Even if you only dedicate a little time to a mindfulness meditation practice, it's essential to bring the experience from the cushion or chair into the world. This means that you don't need more time but the motivation to integrate mindfulness into the many moments that make up your day. Adopting an integrated approach will eventually lead you to live more mindfully. Daily mindfulness rituals train your brain to focus on the present moment. Mindfulness is a skill that can be learned, so the more moments you practice, the more you'll naturally develop this ability. Over time, it will take less effort to do, so it's not that mindfulness is challenging in itself; it's remembering to do it that's often the trickiest part. There are many ways to bring more mindfulness into your life, and you can start creating these moments immediately. Whether you are getting the kids ready for school, sipping a latte, or driving home after work, there's always a way that you can focus on what's happening in the present moment and bring yourself back into the present. The following pages are full of practical tips and easy techniques to help you do this throughout your waking hours to be more mindful during every moment of your day.

GO OUTSIDE AND WALK Our brains are still very similar to our ancestors, and as such, we are hard-wired to spend a lot of time outdoors.

This is why your average person feels better after going for a walk in the woods or taking a jog through a park. Instead, most of us have jobs that require us to be indoors all day.

We then drive home and spend the rest of the night inside.

It's not what we were designed for. So why does this matter? Research has found that those who spend more time in nature have lower rates of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and stress. This is likely because spending time in nature makes us feel more connected to the world around us.

HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR PERSONALIZING YOUR SELF-CARE STRATEGY. WHATEVER AMOUNT OF TIME YOU CARVE OUT FOR YOURSELF IS IMPORTANT.

TALK TO A FRIEND We get so caught up in our own lives that we neglect to check in on the people who care about us. Pick up the phone and give a friend a call to ask how they are doing. It's a simple gesture, but it can make a big difference in someone's day.

COOK A HEALTHY MEAL It's easy to forget how much we eat can impact our mental well-being, not just our physical health. But if you can steal even an hour once a week to cook a healthy meal, then use that time to cook something enjoyable and good for your mental health.

SIMPLY WATCH THE SKY Okay, this might sound a little goofy, but we genuinely enjoy it when we watch the sky. We also appreciate the sunset and moonlight. It's relaxing, and it gives us time to think about things. When we're feeling stressed, it helps us calm down and focus on the positive things in life.

VISION BOARD Visualization is a great way to center yourself. If you have time, grab some old magazines or create a Pinterest board to help visualize your goals and dreams. Keep a journal, especially when you're first starting on your path of selflove. Write down your goals and any affirmations that are particularly important to you. Reading back through the journal will help keep you focused on your goals.

READ A CHAPTER OF A BOOK It's easy to sit on the couch and flip through channels rather than pick up a good book. But sometimes, it's nice to put more effort in and absorb ourselves in a good book. We can immerse ourselves in the story and make our imaginations soar.

JOURNAL OR DRAW Taking a break from technology now and then is a good idea.

Writing in a journal can help you relax, unwind, and process your feelings. You can write about whatever you want in a journal. You could write about your day or give yourself space to reflect on things bothering you. If writing is not your thing, try drawing instead!

Conscious living' has been a buzzword lately. But what does it mean, exactly? Let's break down the basics! Conscious living is simply about recognizing the needs of your mind, body, and spirit and making more informed decisions in your daily life based on this awareness. Living consciously helps you feel more fulfilled and happier in your day-to-day life. We all can live more consciously. It is a skill that can be learned and developed over time. The first step is to become aware of what it means to live with intention—setting intentions for yourself and following through on them. This will help you take control of your life and make more conscious decisions that align with your values.

Practice Meditation Or Yoga The next step in living consciously is learning to be alone with yourself and your thoughts. Once you're comfortable with that, you can begin to dig into the juicy bits of life.

Meditation and yoga are great ways to practice daily focus, inner calm, and clear thinking. Sign up for a yoga class or download a meditation app; set aside 5 minutes to an hour of your time tomorrow morning or evening (whichever works best for you) to try them out. Don't be scared—meditation doesn't have to be anything more than sitting still on the end of your bed and tuning in to your thoughts and your breath if you don't want it to be.

Get To Know Yourself Once you have developed the ability to focus your attention, take some time to think about what you want most from life. Think about what things make you happy and what do not. About how you work best and what doesn't work for you. What are your strengths, and what are your weaknesses? Write down a list of what you want most and what makes you happy. When feeling unfulfilled, demotivated, or unhappy, come back to this list for inspiration! This is such a vast and essential step towards conscious living and allows us to set goals and live a more honest, patient, and forgiving life.

Accept Yourself Striving to conform to someone else's idea of perfect is the most significant barrier to self-growth and living consciously and honestly. It can be hard for many of us to love ourselves, and that's okay! But you can learn to accept and be content with who you are as you are. Being unhappy with yourself is not a good place to get stuck, but we can start shifting the focus on the good things bit by bit by introducing a regular self-appreciation practice. This will help you make decisions based on how you are right now and what's best for YOU instead of making decisions based on how you wished you were because society told you that's how you should be.

Try To Spend Your Time Wisely We spend so much time on our phones or procrastinating that we often forget to make space for the things in life that matter most. To live more consciously, we challenge you to make a conscious effort to spend less time on your phone. Try to focus on getting something out of every day- from doing things you enjoy, finishing things that move you closer to where you want to be, developing a skill, or even just spending time resetting, switching off, and caring for yourself. What have you done today that you can feel good about?! Check your phone to see how many hours of screen time you've had this week.

Learn To Be Grateful Learning to be grateful is one of the most effective ways to adopt a more positive, happy, and fulfilled mindset. Start by thinking about what you're grateful for each day, write it down—make it a daily ritual!

This will tune your mind to positive vibrations, help you reframe bad situations, and allow you to be in the moment and truly appreciate the small things. You'll feel the positive vibes already!

Learn To Make More Conscious Decisions Now that you've spent some time thinking about what's important to you and what values you want to live by, it's time to make decisions based on those principles. What impacts you, and what impacts others? What is our impact on the planet, and how can you be more conscious about this? This type of deep stuff takes some thought.

How many times do you check your phone first thing in the morning? If you're like most people, the answer is probably "a lot." It's hard to resist the temptation of checking social media and seeing what's happening worldwide. But what if we told you there are benefits to disconnecting from technology for a little while each morning? This blog post will discuss creating a mindful morning routine to help you reconnect with yourself before connecting with the world.

So what does your perfect morning routine look like?

A mindful coffee or hot water with lemon and then a meditation or yoga practice? Sounds wonderful, doesn't it? Reality can look different. We hit snooze a few times, then reach for our phones and do some scrolling before our feet even touch the floor in the morning. Social media has become a BIG part of our lives, and it's hard to imagine a life without it these days. The benefits of the connectivity it brings are huge, and we know that, but there are definite disadvantages to how far it has encroached on our lives. So why take some time for yourself each morning to disconnect from social media and reconnect with yourself?

Here are a few benefits of doing a digital detox first thing in the morning: You'll have more time for yourself. When you disconnect from social media, you're giving yourself the gift of time. Time to enjoy your coffee or tea, time to meditate or do some yoga, and time to just be.

You'll start your day with intention. When you take the time to set an intention for your day, you're more likely to stick to it. Whether your intention is to be more present, more productive, or less stressed, setting an intention in the morning will help you stay on track throughout the day.

You'll be less reactive and more responsive.

Spending some time each morning reconnecting with yourself, taking a step back, and assessing a situation before reacting can only lead to more positive outcomes.

You'll have better relationships. When you're constantly connected to social media, it's hard to have meaningful conversations with the people around you. Taking time for yourself each morning will help you connect with others more deeply.

So how do you go about creating a mindful morning routine? Here are a few tips: Start by disconnecting from your devices for 15 minutes first thing in the morning. This might seem impossible at first, but once you get into the habit of doing it, you'll be less reactive and more responsive to the world around you. You'll be more likely to have more meaningful conversations and relationships.

Set an intention for your day. What do you want to accomplish today? How do you want to feel?

When you take the time to set an intention, you're more likely to achieve it.

Take some deep breaths and focus on the present moment. This will help you clear your mind and focus more throughout the day.

Drink a cup of tea or coffee with intention.

Instead of mindlessly drinking your morning beverage, take a few minutes to savor it and enjoy the flavor and aroma.

CREATING A HOLISTIC WELLNESS TOOLKIT WRITTEN BY MARI DIAZ

Have you heard of the idea of having a wellness toolkit that helps you feel supported and grounded?

What's helping you to function lately? You know, the things that help keep you sane when you're on the verge of falling apart? It could be journaling, reading, yoga, or watching your favorite movie. We all need supportive tools in our lives, especially when the world seems to be on the brink of collapse week in and week out. The concept of a wellness toolkit isn't a new one. It's been around for decades and is proven to be effective. The idea of having a tool kit that helps you feel supported and grounded is an approach you can use in the physical sense of wellness and with your emotions. So what is a wellness toolkit? Well, it can be many different things. The possibilities are endless: a physical toolkit, a journal, a collection of items that you find particularly soothing or uplifting. The importance will ultimately depend on the person using the kit.

If it helps them feel better and live happier life, then it's definitely a wellness tool in its own right.

Here's what's in my current wellness toolkit: 1. Sound Healing. I've been spending a few minutes a day doing some sound healing. Sound healing is an ancient practice that many people find beneficial, including achieving a state of relaxation, relieving pain, and unblocking energy flow in the body.

2. Yoga Nidra. Yoga Nidra is one of my favorite meditation techniques. It helps reduce stress and promote better sleep.

I can't live without it! During Yoga Nidra, you enter a highly regenerative meditative state where you can restore and rejuvenate your body, heal and recover from illness, and rewire your brain for greater mental clarity.

3. Earthing. I love this one, too. Earthing (also known as grounding) refers to the discovery that bodily contact with the Earth's natural electric charge stabilizes the physiology at the deepest levels, reduces inflammation, pain and stress, improves blood flow, energy, and sleep, and generates greater well-being. Such effects are profound, systemic, and foundational.

4. Music. It heals everything, right?

5. Walking. I love walking. I walk for thirty minutes daily, which is a big part of my life.

6. Brain Dumping. A life changer! I do this daily, which has helped me see things in a new light and realize what is really important to me. It's a must! Brain dumping is a productivity tool that can help you achieve more in less time. It helps you focus on the essentials and get rid of everything else!

7. Essential oils are also part of my toolkit! I couldn't live without them — especially lavender.

8. Herbal Teas! This is another big part of my life, not only as an herbalist. My teas heal and nourish me every day! I drink tea daily and couldn't live without it. - Ashwagandha and chamomile are one of my absolute favorite herbs.

9. Social media detoxes. As a marketer, I use social media regularly. However, it's important to take breaks from social media on weekends. This is something I actually look forward to.

I also packed my kit with pj's, candles, books, fluffy slippers, and a whole bunch of flowers!

When you're feeling stressed, turn to your wellness toolkit and see what sounds good to you at the moment.

Your wellness toolkit will continue to grow and change over time, so be sure to update it with new discoveries and remove anything that isn't working for you anymore.

Figure out what makes you feel good AND DO THAT! Do it often.

Every day. Find a focus, something that lights you up. Work on that as much as possible. Smile at yourself Every time you pass a mirror. In fact, just SMILE right now. (that's better) The truth is, there is no secret formula for getting Back on track. BUT There is a unique code for each of us. To find that code, you must listen To Your Soul. It will lead you to your happy place.

Journaling Challenge The new year is a time of reflection and reinvention. It gives us the opportunity to take stock of the previous year and assess how we dealt with challenges, as well as find new ways to approach challenges in the future. If you take up just one thing this year, let it be journaling. Journaling is one of the best ways to work through emotions, reduce stress, improve decision making, and get to know yourself better. Journaling can help in almost all areas of your life from relationships, to career, to school, to family.
