INACOL 2017 Juab educators attended iNACOL in Orlando on October 23-25. iNACOL, one of the largest of its kind, is a conference focused on online and blended learning. Here are a few of their takeaways:

Technology can have a strong impact on student learning. The use of digital devices has been shown to improve student achievement, engagement, and motivation.

When a teacher is considering where to begin integrating technology into instruction, the use of a framework can provide “boundaries and anchors to learning theory” (Romrell, Kidder, and Wood 4). The SAMR model is a tool that can be used to evaluate how technology transforms learning. An educator who is considering utilizing technology in the classroom can use this model as a guide.

The SAMR model includes four classifications of technology use for learning: Substitution: The technology provides a substitute for other learning activities without functional change.

Augmentation: The technology provides a substitute for other learning activities that offers functional improvements.

Modification: The technology allows the learning activity to be redesigned.

Redefinition: The technology allows for the creation of tasks that could not have been done without the use of the technology (Romrell, Kidder, and Wood 4).

Canvas has created three distinct apps, each with their own unique functions. Canvas Student allows students to participate in course work, discussions, and messaging.

Students can view grades and submissions.

Canvas Parent gives parents visibility into their students coursework. Parents must be tied to individual students in order to view assignment descriptions and due dates. Parents can also view assignment grades and view course announcements. Canvas Teacher provides teachers access to grading, communicating, and updating course content on the fly.

Juab School District is in the process of launching SafeUT. The APP will be loaded on all devices at the secondary level.

The app provides students confidential and anonymous twoway communication with SafeUT crisis counselors school staff via onetouch options to “Call Crisis line” or “Submit a Tip.” This is a statewide service that provides real-time crisis intervention to youth.
