Immunization Requirements Early Childhood Programs, Kindergarten, and 7th Grade Entry 2017-2018 The following vaccines are required for student entering Kindergarten: 5 DTP/DTaP/DT (4 doses if 4th dose given on/after the 4th birthday) 4 Polio (3 doses, if 3rd dose was given on/after the 4th birthday) 2 Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) 3 Hepatitis B 2 Hepatitis A 2 Varicella **(chickenpox) – history of disease is acceptable; a parent must sign the verification statement on the school immunization record.

Dear JSD Community, Welcome back to another great school year in Juab School District. As I walked through a store the other day, I couldn’t help but buy a brand new box of crayons for just $0.50! I didn’t particularly need the box of crayons, but there is something about a new box of crayons that signifies education and the start of a new school year. It has been said that, “We are [like] a box of crayons each of us unique, but when we get together the picture is complete.”

When I taught, I used crayons to teach about the diversity within my classroom. My students were given the task to draw a picture with only one crayon, then a second drawing using any or all the colors. When asked which picture they preferred, they predictably chose the second with a variety of color, after all, using an assortment of colors one could see that the blue sky, the green grass or the rainbow with a cloud.

We recognize and celebrate diversity here in Juab School District. We believe that all children can learn and when given adequate and proper resources and encouragement will learn at high levels. We believe that your child is unique (just as each color in a crayon box is unique) and he/she deserves to receive a personalized education that will prepare him/her for a global environment.

Looking at four essential elements found in every classroom portrays this personalized learning model: Integrated Digital Content, Targeted Instruction, Student Reflection and Ownership, and Data Driven Decisions. We believe in the power of “YET” learning is a journey and just because one hasn’t accomplished a task yet, doesn’t mean that one cannot or should not try and

certainly doesn’t mean that one should give up. We know that when we help students learn to develop grit and persevere to learn concepts, learning becomes the focus and the constant in our schools. When it comes to the education of our children, we believe in educating the whole child and recognizing the variety of talents and interests. We also believe that it takes a whole team approach in order to attain the desired outcome.

I think of all the different people who impact the learning of our children from school employees (teachers, instructional assistants, custodians, nurses, counselors, school lunch, grounds people, administrators, secretaries, bus drivers, etc.) to parents, local agencies, community leaders, coaches and extra curricular teachers and it seems that we too are like a box of crayons. We may have different responsibilities (each a different color in the box), but each has an impact on the outcome.

While there is wisdom in the words of Robert Fulghum: “We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to learn to live in the same box,” let’s not forget that creativity and innovation only occur when the crayons are used outside the box!

Let’s work together to provide the best education we can for all students in Juab School District. Together this will be a great school year!!!

School Fees Parents May Apply for Fee Waivers Parents who have children in secondary schools should be aware that their child may be eligible for a wavier of school fees. The law does not permit fees at all in grades 1 - 6. Further, the law indicates that a child in grades 7 - 12 likely would be eligible for fee waivers if the parent or guardian’s income is at such a level that their child is eligible for free school lunch. Parents who receive any state or federal assistance likewise may be eligible to receive fee waivers.

If a parent believes that their child might qualify for fee waivers, they should contact the child’s school for the appropriate forms. On the basis of the information parents submit, school principals will determine, according to District and State guidelines, if in fact the student is eligible for fee waivers. An appeal process is place, if a parent disagrees with the local school’s decision.

Route Schedules/ School Bus Efficiency School districts that demonstrate the following practices have been deemed as highly efficient. Juab School District has been applauded for meeting these “Best Practices”.

1. Staggered School Starting Times: Juab School District staggers secondary and elementary starting time. Secondary schools start earlier than elementary schools. This allows the district to use the same bus and driver for these routes. This lowers the number of busses and drivers needed each day.

2. Full Bus Capacity Utilization: This is accomplished in two ways. First our scheduling allows busses to service many schools on the same day. Second capacity utilization is achieved by transporting the highest

number of students on each bus each day. We have a lower percentage of seats not filled each day.

3. Bus Routing Efficiency Development: Bus Routes are developed that create the greatest efficiency in bring student to and from school. Where routes cannot be developed then the district pays in-lieu-of transportation to students that qualify of bussing.

4. Careful Management of Driver Costs: Routing software, GPS and route audits are used to insure the highest efficiency possible.

5. Idling Reduction: All Juab School District drivers have been trained on bus idling reductions and have signed pledges to not idle.
