Dear JSD Community, On behalf of the Board of Education, I want to welcome you back to another great year in Juab School District! We are excited to provide our students with a first class education! Today the value of an education is paramount. With advancement of technology, requirements by higher education, and employment standards today, we must work together more than ever to ensure our children reach their goals of being prepared for college, the work place, and life. It’s our goal to provide every student with a personalized educational experience. We are passionate about our students reaching their full potential. I am very grateful to serve in a wonderful community that cares so much about the success of our children. We appreciate all of your trust and support!

Immunization Requirements Early Childhood Programs, Kindergarten, and 7th Grade Entry 2016-2017 The following immunization requirements are required for your child to attend kindergarten and 7th grade for the 2016-2017 school year.

To attend kindergarten students must have written proof of receiving the following immunizations: 5 DTaP/DTaP/DT (4 doses if 4th dose given on/after the 4th birthday) 4 Polio* (3 doses, if 3rd dose was given on/after the 4th birthday) 2 Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) 3 Hepatitis B 2 Hepatitis A 2 Varicella **(chickenpox) – history of disease is acceptable; a parent must sign the verification statement on the school immunization record.

To attend 7th grade, students must have written proof of receiving the following immunizations: 1 Tdap 1 Meningococcal 3 Hepatitis B 2 Varicella **(chickenpox) – history

of disease is acceptable; a parent must sign the verification statement on the school immunization record.

To attend early childhood programs (Pre-school), students are required appropriately for age. This means a child has received all of the doses of each vaccine appropriate for the child’s age. Children should be immunized according to current immunization schedules.

With the exception of Tdap and Meningococcal, a child may be allowed to attend school “conditionally” if at least one dose of each required immunization has been completed and the child is currently on schedule to receive the remaining immunizations. The remaining immunizations must be completed on schedule for the child to remain in attendance.

For children whose parents claim an exemption to immunizations for medical, religious, or personal reasons, an appropriate Utah Department of

Health Exemption form must be completed and presented to the child’s school and a copy kept in their cumulative file. These forms can be obtained at your local health department.

If we do not receive proof of immunization by the first day of school, we may be forced to exclude your child from attendance. We regret that we must take this action, but state law requires that children must be appropriately immunized in order to attend a Utah school or early childhood program. Our facility supports this policy. If you have questions or need additional information, please call the School District at 623-1940 or contact the School Nurse at 6230328.

Dear JSD Community, I extend a warm welcome to all students returning to our schools this fall. I hope that through the summer break, you have found time to explore and learn new things as well as read new books or articles.

I read a quote recently from the International Center for Leadership in Education: “The primary aim of education is not to enable students to do well IN school, but to help them do well in the lives they lead OUTSIDE of school.” Our goal is to make schools a place for learning where all students, parents, faculty and staff feel safe and valued.

The Juab School Board of Education has one goal and one purpose: student learning. Each year the board approves a strategic vision that guides the work of supporting and improving student learning. As parents and citizens in the community, we are part of the team that helps this learning occur. We appreciate your support and participation in our schools.

We appreciate and recognize the great work that our teachers do and value their expertise. Each staff member has a valuable position that impact student learning, whether it’s providing transportation or nutritious meals for our children, clean, well-groomed and well-functioning facilities, instructional assistance or coaching, administrative/leadership roles or the many specialty jobs across the district. As a team, we can improve our schools and the outcomes for our children, ultimately impacting our communities.

School Fees Parents May Apply for Fee Waivers Parents who have children in secondary schools should be aware that their child may be eligible for a wavier of school fees. The law does not permit fees at all in grades 1 - 6. Further, the law indicates that a child in grades 7 - 12 likely would be eligible for fee waivers if the parent or guardian’s income is at such a level that their child is eligible for free school lunch. Parents who receive any state or federal assistance likewise may be eligible to receive fee waivers.

If a parent believes that their child might qualify for fee waivers, they should contact the child’s school for the appropriate forms. On the basis of the information parents submit, school principals will determine, according to District and State guidelines, if in fact the student is eligible for fee waivers. An appeal process is place, if a parent disagrees with the local school’s decision.

SPACE AVAILABLE There may be some space available on some of the routes if you live inside the 1 1/2 mile distance for elementary schools or 2 mile distance for secondary schools. The form needs to be picked up at the district office or can be accessed on line at the Juab District Website. The decision on space available is not made for at least 2 weeks after school starts. New forms must be filled out each year.

Route Schedules / School Bus Efficiency School districts that demonstrate the following practices have been deemed as highly efficient. Juab School District has been applauded for meeting these “Best Practices”.

1. Staggered School Starting Times: Juab School District staggers secondary and elementary starting times. Secondary schools start earlier than elementary schools. This allows the district to use the same bus and driver for these routes. This lowers the number of busses and drivers needed each day.

2. Full Bus Capacity Utilization: This is accomplished in two ways. First our scheduling allows busses to service many schools on the same day. Second capacity utilization is achieved by

transporting the highest number of students on each bus each day. We have a lower percentage of unfilled seats each day.

3 Bus Routing Efficiency Development: Bus routes are developed that create the greatest efficiency in bring student to and from school. Where routes cannot be developed then the district pays in-lieu-of transportation to students that qualify for bussing.

4 Careful Management of Driver Costs: Routing software, GPS and route audits are used to insure the highest efficiency possible.

5. Idling Reduction: All Juab School District drivers have been trained on bus idling reductions and have signed pledges to limit idling.
