The Battle is Not Yours. It’s the Lords

2 Chronicles 20:15

“The battle is not yours, it’s the Lord’s” is a phrase steeped in history, faith, and practical wisdom. It challenges individuals to surrender their fears and struggles, to trust in something greater than themselves, and to find serenity in letting go. Whether drawn from ancient scripture or sung in the melodies of modern gospel, its message endures as a source of courage and consolation in the face of life’s battles.

In moments of hardship, may these words serve as a gentle reminder: you are not alone, and the outcome does not rest on your shoulders alone. Sometimes, the greatest strength lies in surrender, and the greatest victories are won not by might, but by faith

When life gets tough, sometimes it's all about having faith and letting go The phrase "The battle is not yours, it's the Lord's" comes from II Chronicles 20:15 It's about trusting that a higher power has your back, just like when King Jehoshaphat was told not to worry because God would handle things. Jehoshaphat and his people were reassured by God that they didn't need to be afraid because the battle was God's to fight. Jehoshaphat showed his faith by fasting, praying, and seeking God's guidance, which is a pretty humble move Instead of fighting, the people of Judah praised God, and they won without lifting a finger. It's about recognizing when things are too big to handle alone and finding strength in faith. Is about choosing faith over fear, which can bring hope and courage even when things are uncertain. It means praying for guidance, letting go of the need to control outcomes, and finding peace in not knowing what's next

The battle is not ours to fight because God wants to reveal his holiness, love, and power in our lives. We tend to trust what we can see more than what we can’t. Oftentimes, the battle that rages around us is a spiritual one. But a heart that’s submitted to the Lord in humble dependence and faithful obedience sees the victory

The Interview

It is always a privilege and an honor to make “A Spiritual Connection” with God’s Masterpieces or should I say the Master’s pieces? Those who are fearfully and wonderfully made in His image; those who He has invested in that we might experience another facet of His greatness. That certainly was the case as I connected with Dr. Laval W. Belle, a revered producer, publisher, pastor, playwright, author and musician from St Louis, Missouri

As one of ten children, Dr Belle did not know his natural Father, but God, THE Father and his God Father, Pastor David Epley exposed him to excellence and greatness at a very early age. From the Academy of Music in New York to the likes of Edwin and Walter Hawkins, Dr. Belle unknowingly gleaned from trailblazers.

From beating on trash cans with tree branch drum sticks at age 7 to traveling the world with the incomparable Earth, Wind and Fire, Aretha Franklin, Keb’ Mo, Bette Midler, Andrae’ Crouch, George Benson, Chaka Khan and so many others, Dr Belle grasped John 16:13 that says, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth” (NLT) Even when Philip Baily asked Dr. Belle to teach Bible study, the Spirit of God that enveloped him in 1993 empowered him to do that as well.

As an author, his steps were ordered to write the first of his twelve books entitled Your Gifts are Not Your Purpose which sold hundreds of thousands of copies. Dr. Belle said, “Our gifts make room for our purpose; they facilitate our purpose My entire life, ministry and everything I do is about purpose” He went on to share how all of his decisions are centered around purpose

Not only has Dr. Belle been a successful author, but he is also the founder of Noahs Ark Publishing Service which is one of the few black publishing houses He is responsible for Jackie Joyner-Kersee Running for the Gold; Connecting Kids to Dreams co-written with Jackie Joyner-Kersee; Father, I Never Knew You by the late great Reverend Norman Hutchins and many other authors including Dick Gregory and basketball great, LeBron James. “When God gave me the name of my publishing company, He said, ‘people will come to you who what their stories published’ and that is exactly what happened”

Another great work that is forthcoming by Dr. Belle and his publishing company, is co-authored with Dr. Monica R. Butler, founder of The Gospel Music Hall of Fame. The book is entitled The Gospel Music Hall of Fame: Pioneers of Greatness. Dr. Belle was very emphatic about this book being an extraordinarily important piece of ‘his-story’, no, actually of ‘our story’!He went on to say how crucial it is that we document “I often tell people that there are three components of a divine outline: inspiration, documentation and verification. As African Americans we need to do a better job of documenting our stories”, says Dr. Belle. That is exactly what we will find in this great historical work. He went on to say, “I've learned that as a publisher and writer we must document and remember that there are two types of property or real estate, if you will. There is terrestrial property which is the tangible and then there is intellectual property which are our ideas and the best property we will ever own. No one can foreclose on our intellectual property. This book is going to be an antiquity, a piece of history that people will see around long after the authors and all those contained in it have gone on”. I am looking forward to my copy of documented history.

Pioneers of Greatness is more than a part of the title; it is the substratum of the content of this impressive work. It is our story that will not be washed away but instead published by Noahs Ark, safely preserving its content to be positioned to produce after its own kind Mahalia Jackson, Thomas Dorsey, The Dixie Hummingbirds, Shirley Ceasar, and so many others who are both current and historical have found themselves in The Gospel Music Hall of Fame: Pioneers of Greatness. Dr. Belle exuded with excitement as he spoke about the richness of this work and the gospel tribute questions embedded in it.

When Dr Belle sought the definition of Gospel music from Dr Butler, she said something so very profound yet simple and true “Gospel music is the good news with music”. Dr Belle said, “Gospel music is so powerful that Jesse Jackson would have people singing on the back of a pickup truck advancing the civil rights movement. Music was never created for pleasure. As Africans the music was for war, for communication and for spiritual ceremonial activity. Even when we came to America it was a call and response. Wherever you find a Black man or a Black woman you have gospel music” It sounds like we must cherish the deep place from whence good news music came and The Gospel Music Hall of Fame: Pioneers of Greatness is an imperative resourceful reminder of that. Pre-order your copy of our story here http://solo.to/gmhofbook

As we reflect on the theme of this issue taken from II Chronicles 20:15 “… the battle is not yours”, and consider The Pioneers of Greatness, what is most glaring is our posture today. II Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (NIV) Dr Laval Belle emphasized the humility it takes to surrender, to take heed to the Word of the Lord and to die daily to our flesh and the things of the world. He recalled the battle that was not his when he had to choose between two incredible opportunitie Benson. Music and the Kingdom

Don’t Fight, Just Praise

Greetings in the mighty matchless name of Jesus! I’ve faced many battles in my lifetime Some that were natural, but most were spiritual!

I had to learn that you cannot use the same weapon or weapons for the same battles. For instance, my journey through prostate cancer, I learned to trust the men who God placed here who are medical doctors to advise me on how to fight this horrible disease which had attacked my body. But there was another war going on that the doctors couldn’t assist me with. That war was going on in my mind I believe Dr Joyce Meyers wrote a book that I read long before my diagnosis It basically said that the mind is a battlefield where spiritual warfare takes place, emphasizing the importance of controlling one's thoughts. Renewing the Mind: It focuses on the necessity of renewing the mind according to God's Word to live a victorious Christian life. I forgot I read that book until this journey happened and the things that I read inside came up to bring back my focus understanding, and the importance of how I was thinking. That I needed to think the same thoughts that God thinks about me! As a man thinketh

As a believer battles are not foreign to us at all. We know that the plan of the enemy has not changed! But we’ve learned as the word of God declares in 2 Corinthians 10:4 “(for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)” KJV The battle is not fought with guns but with the infallible word of God!

As we look to the text of this months issue we see that King Jehoshaphat's life, particularly his response to a massive enemy army in 2 Corinthians 20 ,offers valuable lessons in faith, prayer, and trusting God during times of crisis He teaches us to turn to God in fear, seek His guidance through prayer, acknowledge His sovereignty, and ultimately trust in His deliverance! We learn from Jehoshaphat to seek the Lord in Times of uncertainty, pray for guidance, acknowledge that the Lord is sovereign and whatever he allows to be it is so! But here’s what I really want to speak to; Worship & Praise! Jehoshaphat led his people in worship & praise, even before the battle was won. This demonstrates the power of praising God in difficult circumstances and trusting in His deliverance

This tells us what our posture should be when going through, when challenged, when we hear a diagnosis that we don’t want to hear, when we’re struggling financially or we’re faced with that which we know not what to do. It’s simple…

WE WORSHIP & WE PRAISE! We send Judah (praise) first. We don’t panic in fear as those that have no hope We look to God, the author and finisher of our faith We lift up the song in our hearts! It may not sound like anything you’ve heard before & totally foreign to everyone including you. But because it’s being birth in a valley season, it’s authentic, organic & natural.

The right song makes way for victory & deliverance When we exalt our father, he hears us It gets his attention, pulls on his coattail so to speak At that point his response to our praise, our worship says I’m with you, you are not alone. Cast all your cares on me for I care for you! See Jehoshaphat committed his situation to God, acknowledging that only God could save them! He was obedient to what God told him to do to the point that the battle he was about to fight became a Praise Party! God told him to send Judah first & the opposing army was destroyed! Key point here: Jehoshaphat and all the people of Judah stood before the Lord and waited for Him to answer them My, what a difference it would make if we didn’t rush off to battle but instead waited for a bit before the Lord for him to give direction!

So the next time you’re faced with a battle, doesn’t matter what it is, consult the Lord first, wait for his voice and more importantly start singing to him. Songs that woo him...that tell him he’s what you need, all you have. Then get ready to dance because victory requires a dance! You ever notice when professional sports teams win the championship, there’s a celebration unlike any other They dance shout scream! Why because they’ve experienced the victory

So let me help you put your shouting shoes on my friends, guess what we’ve already been guaranteed the victory! God has already defeated the enemy. You do not have to fight in this battle! You only need to stand firm and watch the Lord's deliverance.

A Pastor’s Perspective

Make Almighty God Absolute.

Reprint from July 2025

Here we go again.Just when we as a people thought we wouldn't have to ever repeat an era of time in the 20th Century that caused our elders and ancestors a life of pain, heartache, suffering and even death; we now find ourselves in the 21st Century in an age old war. With current government administration that has been waiting in the lurks to strategically reignite an old system under the guise of a new name they call it Project 2025 but it's really an updated version of Jim Crow. Jim Crow is not really a person but a system. It navigates systemic racism legally by creating certain laws and policies, gerrymandering, isolating and ostracizing races and cultures. With the hopes of keeping them from evolving within mainstream society and it promotes an evil thought process. that one particular race of people is superior to all other races That's just to name a few things about this system. Oh and those that cater to this system believe God wants it this way.

This does not happen overnight, it is calculated by design and slowly implemented through years of planning The cold part about it is that it’s diabolically done right before your eyes but when you become nonchalant about what is happening in your legislative branches of power, laws will be passed, and the oppressor will gain more control. When you do finally open your eyes and expand your intellect the deed is done.

The vanguards for MAGA (Make America Great Again) pushed this concept so much until it's a part of mainstream culture. I do MAGA too but my acronym stands for Make Almighty God Absolute Leadership under a dictator and authoritarian only exacerbates relations and will never produce true allegiance for a narcissist

In the song "We Are The World", the first line says , There comes a time when we heed a certain call when the world must come together as one Then there is another line in the song that says , Let us realize that change can only come when we stand together as one The lyrics of the song were written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie in 1985, produced by Quincy Jones and recorded by some of our most famous award winning secular artist. The song was a response to the famine in Ethiopia. By the way this collective group consisted of all races, nationalities, men , women and religious beliefs.

There's a great Clarion call for Social Justice and Liberation Theology in this hour in which we live It's not “what are we going to do”, but rather, “what concerns are we going to address?”. All hands must be on deck for this assignment because we are already behind time. Above all the church cannot afford to be silent. We cannot shout holes in the carpet Sunday and go back home like nothing is happening. We can't sit in another conference, convention, or gathering, spend money leave and go back to the same old thing. In our zeal to be relevant have we compromised our identity and power as the Church mighty and strong When Christ our ultimate example was all about Social Justice

We who are seasoned in age must become acclimated to the tools of this virtual and digital age that we live and revive the fight in us that brought us through in years past We must under-gird the next generation with strategies. Wisdom and foresight. The young ones must realize they carry the mantle and will be the new gatekeepers. Respect history, guard it, learn from it, preserve it because your generation will construct a new era and new system This incoming generation will have to master fighting not in a physical manner but with intellect, finances, stamina, and unshakable faith. and undying love for God's people. You will have to learn the difference between getting into Good Trouble from just being in trouble.

It's not “what are we It's not “what are we It's not “what are we going to do”, but rather, going to do”, but rather, to but rather, “what concerns are we “what concerns are we “ are going to address?” going to address?”to address?”

Generals are being called out of the earth realm, the old gatekeepers are tired and sick, Paradigms have shifted, and old regimes are being torn down. There's a new model. No longer is there one leader that fits all. Remember what affects one directly affects us all indirectly Believe it or not we are interconnected

Hey there! I’m thrilled to dive into a topic that often flies under the radar: the incredible power of input! Recently, I was chatting with a friend who was feeling perpetually overwhelmed and exhausted. Despite multiple doctor's visits and spotless lab results, she felt mentally, physically and spiritually fragile Why, oh why, couldn’t she shake this feeling?

After trying all the self-care tricks in the book think pedicures, manicures, retail therapy, and peaceful walks in nature nothing seemed to work So, I asked her to walk me through her day That’s when we stumbled upon a little something I like to call Chronic Negative Input Syndrome (CNIS). Sounds dramatic, right? But it’s real!

Your Mind Matters: The Power of Input on Mental Health and Wellbeing

What’s on Your Mind Menu?

We all know that what we eat affects our physical health, but have you considered what you’re feeding your mind? Just like our bodies thrive on nutritious food, our minds flourish on positive input. On the flip side, negative input can be as toxic to our mental health as junk food is to our bodies. In simple words- negative, unfruitful, non-edifying input serves as a huge risk factor for decreased mental, physical and spiritual fortitude

Every day, we’re bombarded with information news, social media, and conversations each vying for our attention. This input, whether uplifting or dragging us down, plays a huge role in our mental, spiritual, and physical wellbeing. Positive input can lead to longer life, lower depression rates, less anxiety and better overall health. In contrast, negative input can contribute to chronic diseases and fatigue. Who knew?

The Tale of Mary and Erika

Let’s look at Mary, who was experiencing chronic fatigue. Despite numerous tests revealing nothing unusual, her doctor overlooked a critical factor: her environment. Mary worked in a toxic workplace filled with constant criticism, back-biting and drama. This steady stream of negativity drained her vitality like a slow leak in a tire. BELOVED- INPUT HAS POWER!. As Proverbs 18:21 reminds us, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit ” Words matter!

Now, imagine Erika, a brilliant and creative public school teacher. Each morning, she wakes up excited for the day But every day at 8:00 am, her sister calls, eager to dish out the latest family gossip and relationship drama. Initially, Erika listens to fulfill her role as confidant and big sister, but soon realizes these chats leave her feeling drained, anxious and hopeless. The negative input that she ingests daily has a cumulative impact on her mental, physical and spiritual health Her elevated blood pressure, headaches, poor immune system , fatigue and moodiness could be related to how her body responds to input and she does not even realize it! What are you watching, hearing and seeing?

Guard Your Mental Space

So, what’s the takeaway? It’s crucial to manage the input we allow into our lives We often let negativity seep in far too easily. You don’t need to know everything, see everything or hear everything! Just because "EVERYTHING" is available doesn't mean that it's always good for you. Protecting your mental space requires discernment, wisdom and discipline. Remembernegative input can be toxic, often zapping your joy and peace, leading to stress and fatigue. Take control over your input; don’t let it control you! Just as we guard our physical boundaries, we must also safeguard our mental ones

Simple Steps to Manage Your Input

Here are some fun and practical steps you can take to manage your mental input:

1.Be Mindful of Your Sources: Limit exposure to negative news, people and social media.

2.Set Boundaries: Politely decline gossip sessions. "Hey, good seeing you. Lets talk later"

3 Curate Your Feed: Unfollow accounts that drag you down "If what they post aggravates you stop reading it!"

4.Seek Positive Input: Fill your life with uplifting content books, music, and people with edifying conversation.

5.Practice Gratitude: Focus on the good stuff to counteract negativity.

6.Spend Time in Nature: Immerse yourself in God’s beautiful creation.

7 Engage in Joyful Activities: Dive into hobbies and creative pursuits that make you smile!

8 Pray and Meditate on Scripture: Connect with God’s Word for guidance and peace Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you in your pursuit of positive input.

A Prayer for Positive Input

Let’s wrap up with a heartfelt prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of a sound mind. Help us to be wise stewards of our thoughts and guard our hearts from negativity. Grant us discernment to recognize harmful input and the strength to choose what is good, pure, and uplifting. Fill our lives with Your peace and joy, and empower us to be a source of light and encouragement to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

So, let’s make a conscious effort to filter our input and nourish our minds with positivity After all, your mind matters!

The gospel world is grieving the loss of Mama Mosie Burks, the iconic voice and spiritual heart of the Mississippi Mass Choir, who passed away at the age of 92. Mosie achieved global recognition in the late 1980s after joining the Mississippi Mass Choir, founded by Frank Williams. As a prominent lead vocalist for the group, she delivered notable performances of songs such as “When I Rose This Morning” and “God’s Been Good to Me.” Her vocal contributions were instrumental in establishing the choir's reputation and enhancing the impact of their musical presentations During the eulogy, Shirley Caesar referred to Mosie as a “frontline soldier” for the gospel, and Pastor Marvin Sapp stated, “Her voice was scripture wrapped in song.” The service ended with the choir and audience singing “I’ll Fly Away,” marking the conclusion of the ceremony.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner, an actor, director, poet, and musician whose work spanned multiple generations and known for playing Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, died July 20, at 54 in a drowning accident while on vacation with his family at a beach along the country's Caribbean coast. Over several decades, he appeared in productions such as Malcolm & Eddie, Reed Between the Lines, and The Resident, and received a Grammy Award for his contributions to spoken word and music.

Embracing Summer's Bounty: Zucchini Fries

Summer is officially here, and the temperatures are soaring! With the blistering heat and humidity, the last thing we want is a heavy meal weighing us down. Many of us are in the prime of gardening, surrounded by a vibrant array of fresh vegetables. Why not take advantage of this seasonal bounty to create something light, refreshing, and delicious?

The intense summer heat encourages some vegetables to thrive, while others struggle without ample water. We nurture our gardens daily, tending to their growth, but there’s nothing quite like the joy of seeing God water our gardens. I can’t help but smile and sometimes even jump for joy at the sight of dark rain clouds or the promise of refreshing rain.

As Jeremiah 5:24 reminds us: "They do not say in their heart, 'Let us now fear the Lord our God, Who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season. He reserves for us the appointed weeks of the harvest.'” God’s rain nourishes our gardens far beyond any effort we can put forth.

This scripture resonates deeply in our lives. Without the rain—symbolizing trials, tribulations, setbacks, and confrontations—we wouldn’t fully appreciate the sunshine that follows Those cloudy days enhance our gratitude for the bright, sunny moments that bring warmth and prosperity. With the sun comes vibrancy—health, harmony, promotions, happiness, and more.

During these sun-drenched summer days, let’s celebrate the season by making some delicious Zucchini Fries.

Zucchini Fries

Ingredients:

1 fresh zucchini

1 egg

1 cup of cornmeal or fish breading (like Andy's or Zatarain’s)

Your favorite seasonings (garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, Creole seasoning for a spicy kick)

2 cups of olive oil

1.Heat olive oil in a pan.

2 Crack the egg into a ziplock bag.

Preparation:

3.Pour cornmeal into a separate ziplock bag.

4.Slice the zucchini into wedge-shaped fries.

5.Season the zucchini with your preferred spices.

6.Place a few seasoned zucchini fries into the egg bag and shake well.

7.Transfer those fries to the cornmeal bag and coat them thoroughly.

8 Carefully place the fries into the hot oil, turning them until they are golden brown on all sides. They will float when they are done. Repeat the process until all fries are cooked.

If frying isn’t your preference, you can easily use an air fryer—just spray with cooking spray and cook until done.

This recipe works wonderfully with squash and eggplant too! The beauty of these vegetables lies in their mild flavors, allowing them to absorb the seasonings beautifully. I promise you’ll love them!

As you savor this dish, remember the importance of the summer sun for our gardens and lives. Cherish these moments, even as you wipe the sweat from your brow, knowing that soon enough, a summer rain will come to cool everything down.

When You Trust God with the Outcome

In the journey of relationships whether marriage, friendship, or family there comes a moment when our strength feels depleted, and our strategies fall short We’ve tried communicating, compromising, and counseling. We’ve fought for understanding, for respect, for connection. But the heartache lingers, and the battle endures.

It’s in those moments that Scripture offers a powerful reminder, like a whisper through the whirlwind: “The battle is not yours, but God's.” (2 Chronicles 20:15)

This isn’t just an encouraging phrase it’s a spiritual principle. Letting God fight for you is an act of surrender, a declaration that you trust His sovereignty over your situation. But surrender doesn’t mean giving up It means giving over releasing the burden of fixing, forcing, or figuring things out and entrusting the timeline, the method, and the result to the One who sees all.

Giving God the Timeline

One of the most difficult parts of trusting God is letting go of our sense of urgency. We want resolution now. We pray and hope for overnight change. We long for a moment that instantly makes everything better

But restoration especially in relationships is often slow and sacred Healing takes time because God isn’t just interested in outcomes; He’s interested in transformation.

As we wait, God works not just on them, but within us.

Psalm 27:14 encourages us: “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart ”

God may not move on your timeline, but He always moves with purpose Sometimes the waiting is the working.

Surrendering the Method

We often have a picture of how we think healing should happen. Maybe it's a heartfelt apology, a breakthrough counseling session, or a clear conversation that fixes everything. But God's methods are rarely predictable

He may use silence to speak volumes.

He may use someone else’s testimony to stir change.

· He may draw hearts through circumstances that seem unrelated. When we release our grip on how things should unfold, we make space for divine creativity. Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us, “My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways ”

God’s method may feel unfamiliar, but it is always intentional. And His way often leads to healing we never imagined.

Trusting Him with the Result

This is perhaps the most tender part of surrender: accepting that the outcome may not look like the happily-ever-after we imagined

· Not every relationship will be restored

Not every conflict will be resolved neatly.

Not every person will choose reconciliation.

But here's the beauty every relationship surrendered to God becomes a platform for His glory. Romans 8:28 offers this anchor of hope: “All things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose ” That good may not always feel like what we want But it will always reflect God’s redemptive heart

Letting God fight for you may not lead to a perfect ending but it always leads to a purposeful one. He is the Master Redeemer, able to take shattered pieces and form mosaics of grace. What Does This Look Like in Daily Life?

Surrendering your relational battles to God isn’t passive it’s deeply active in the spirit. It means:

· Praying more than arguing Invite God into the tension

Responding with grace over retaliation. Choose love, even when wounded. Trusting His timing, even when it feels slow. Rest in His pace.

· Accepting His methods, even when they stretch your faith. Let Him write the story.

· When your hands release control, your heart opens to peace.

Jesus: Our Ultimate Example

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus modeled total surrender Facing betrayal, abandonment, and the cross, He prayed, “Not my will, but Yours be done.” (Luke 22:42) He entrusted the timeline, the method, and the result to His Father. And through that surrender came the greatest victory salvation for all.

If Jesus, knowing the weight of the world rested on Him, could trust the Father’s plan, then surely we can too

Whatever battle you’re facing today in your marriage, with a friend, in your family—take heart. You don’t have to win it. You don’t have to carry it. You don’t even have to understand it fully.

Just whisper, “Lord, this battle is Yours. I trust You with it all.”

And then let go of the timeline, the method, and the result. Because the God who calms storms, resurrects hearts, and writes redemption into every page will carry you through with unfailing love

Starting a New Business Venture? Learn the Top Five Differences Between a For-Profit and a NonProfit Entity and Choose Which Structure is Best for You

Sometimes God gives us a vision or a new assignment that could potentially grow into a fullfledged business When this happens, we should know what kind of business structure to form during the early planning stages of the venture Although Habakkuk 2:2-3 says to write the vision and make it plain, it’s still important to know the difference between a for-profit business and a non-profit organization. Even if the vision isn’t until an appointed time, laying the proper foundation and structure early in the process is critical. In this article, we address five key differences between the two structures to help you decide which model is best for your vision.

1.GOALS, VISION, MISSION, AND PURPOSE

The primary purpose of forming a for-profit entity is to generate an income and distribute profits and excess earnings to its shareholders. However, the primary purpose of a non-profit organization is to fulfill a charitable, religious, scientific, social, or educational purpose –generally by serving the public good in one or more of these areas.

2.OWNERSHIP AND GOVERNANCE

A for-profit company can be owned and governed by either an individual, partners, another corporation, or shareholders; whereas non-profit organizations are not owned by individual parties but are governed by their board of directors.

3. ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE

There are some significant differences between how a for-profit business tracks and reports its accounting records compared to a non-profit organization, as indicated below.

a Revenue Streams

Both types of entities typically generate revenue by selling goods and services. However, nonprofits also have access to other sources of tax-deductible income, such as donations from fundraising sources, including programs, special events, grants, auctions, and bake sales. But it’s important to note that income not related to its tax-exempt mission may be taxed on Unrelated Business Income (UBI)

b. Financing and Fundraising Activities

For-profit entities typically raise funds from both debt and equity financing, (from loans or investors, respectively). However, non-profit organizations raise funds to operate their business differently, including program activities, tax-deductible contributions from individuals, special events, or grants from foundations, corporations, and government agencies.

c. Use and Distribution of Profits

For-profit corporations distribute excess earnings to individuals and shareholders. However, by law, non-profit organizations cannot. They must reinvest their profits back into the organization to help further its mission.

d. Financial Statements and Reporting

Both for-profit and non-profit entities are responsible for accurately tracking and reporting their income, costs, and expenses. However, there are some slight differences between the two types of reporting:

·For-profit entities use the standard Financial Statements. They include the Profit and Loss Statement (Income Statement), the Balance Sheet (Statement of Financial Position), and the Statement of Cash Flows.

·Non-profit entities use the Statement of Activities, the Statement of Financial Position, and the Statement of Cash Flows. Some of the line items are also recorded differently

It’s also important to note that Fund Accounting, which is specific to non-profit organizations, involves tracking how funds that are donated for specific purposes are used. They are organized into three main classifications:

Permanently Restricted Funds

Temporarily Restricted Funds, and Unrestricted Funds

4.TAXATION

Each type of entity is required to report, file, and pay taxes based on how the company is structured. Some of the common tax differences are associated with income, sales, and payroll tax.

Income Tax

For-profit entities are required to pay taxes on net profits, whereas non-profit organizations are not

Sales and Use Tax

Sales and Use Tax are based on product sales made on-site or online. Both for-profit and nonprofit companies are required to collect and pay Sales and Use Tax. However, some non-profit organizations may be exempt, depending on the state in which they operate

Payroll and Employment Tax

Both types of entities are required to withhold and pay payroll and employment taxes. Some non-profits and churches may not withhold FICA / Social Security Taxes for non-ministerial employees or those treated as independent contractors.

5. DISSOLUTION

Both types of entities must properly dissolve their organization by filing an Articles of Dissolution with each respective state. Both must settle any outstanding debts and liabilities. However, a for-profit entity may distribute any remaining assets to its owners or shareholders, but non-profit organizations must distribute any remaining assets to another qualified taxexempt organization

CONCLUSION

New Music SPOTLIGHT

Rev. John Lee Hooker

Reverend John Lee Hooker Jr. was born in Detroit, Michigan, 73 years ago. He is the son of one of the greatest blues musicians in the world, the late John Lee Hooker.

His musical journey began at the age of eight, and he later achieved notable acclaim as a two-time Grammy Award nominee and recipient of a lifetime achievement award in the blues genre.

Growing up on the streets of Detroit, Hooker Jr. faced the harsh realities of life early on. By the age of 15, he was battling addiction to drugs and alcohol. This led to drug-related crimes, which resulted in multiple prison sentences across Michigan, Texas, California, and Canada As his mother used to tell him, “If you lie down with dogs, you’ll get up either smelling like one or you’re going to get bit.”

He is a survivor of being shot twice, stabbed, homelessness, and multiple drug overdoses, Hooker Jr. sank to unimaginable depths. But it was at his lowest point that he found redemption by a Savior called Jesus Christ

After more than three decades in and out of prison, the Lord called him—in the very place where he had spent so much of his life: behind bars.

Today, Rev. Hooker has a new purpose. Having left behind the blues, he now shares the Good News of Jesus Christ through his music. He released his first gospel single in 2024 entitled, Running For Jesus" that led to his current single and music video entitled, “Heaven Rules” and is available on All Digital Outlets.

Elder Hooker has achieved academic success as well, holding an Associate’s Degree, a Bachelor’s Degree in Ministry, and a Master’s Degree in Counseling. In addition, he has earned five units of Clinical Pastoral Education and served as a Palliative Care Chaplain at Kaiser and Sutter hospitals

He was appointed as a prison Chaplain by the late Pastor B.L. Toliver and recently promoted to International Chaplain by Jurisdictional Prelate Bishop Mario Gaines of C.O.G.I.C. International.

Now residing in Germany with his wife Birgit, Elder Hooker has expanded his ministry by visiting both men’s and women’s prisons throughout the country. He recently returned from Alaska touring prisons and sharing the Gospel. He has added another achievement to his inspiring journey: the release of his book, “From the Shadow of the Blues: My Story of Music, Addiction, and Redemption."
