It is so good that the return of the Markets for both Allerton and Woolton are returning. In Woolton they are offering all local businesses in Gateacre and Woolton a free stall to promote their business from August 1st - Saturday 8th 8am - 2pm this will give them a kick start along with the usual regular farmer’s market traders.

I would like to welcome all our new advertisers in this July Special Edition - there are many, I wish them all the luck with their current business ventures. Secondly I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our LOYAL businesses again for their tremendous support over the year supplying advertising or producing fantastic articles which we all enjoy and look forward to reading over the year. WOOLTON IN BLOOM First the good news. By the time you read this we will have a new permanent feature on Kings Drive Woolton. We have had various features on the same spot, the floral crown to mark the Queen’s Jubilee, the World War 1 soldier and the candles celebrating 60 years of the Marie Curie Hospice. Now we are putting a permanent crown feature in place. It seems a natural feature to have on Kings Drive. It has been made by Woolton Blacksmiths and will be surrounded by plants. I hope you like it!

Our not so good news is our support from HomeBargains has come to an end. They have supplied our watering throughout the summer. I’m hoping to find new sponsors/supporters for the village. In the meantime the volunteers are having to do the watering ourselves. If you can help please get in touch because we really need a proper rota of help. The fact that we haven’t got hanging baskets this year is making it a bit easier.

TMSB Woolton St Pauli FC Under 12’s Boys Team run 800 miles to raise £1,280 for end of life charity Marie Curie Margaret’S Publishing

Unable to train together or play matches for the last few months, seventeen players of the MSB Woolton St Pauli FC Under 12’s Boys Team decided to raise funds for end of life charity Marie Curie by running 800 miles between them, and have raised £1,280 so far on their fundraising page Head Coach Chris McIver, whose 12 year old son Christopher is in the team and took part in the challenge, said “The boys were really missing training and playing football together since lockdown began and in order to keep them united as a team, keep their fitness levels up and have some fun at the same time, we decided to run the equivalent distance from our Liverpool Simpson’s training ground to our namesake St Pauli in Hamburg – 800 miles split between all seventeen players and coaches during June”.

Coach Chris’s wife Jane McIver, who works at Marie Curie’s Woolton Hospice as Outpatient Secretary said, “I see first hand every day the care and support Marie Curie’s doctors and nurses give to people living with terminal illness and was so pleased that the boys decided to raise funds to support our work”.

Twelve year old MSB Woolton St Pauli FC Under 12’s player Christopher McIver (whose Dad Chris coaches the team) said “We all had to fit our runs in with our school work

and logged our daily runs on the Strava app so that we could keep an eye on our group total. It was hard work, but we all kept in touch every day to see how we were doing and are really pleased to have completed the 800 miles as a team and raised so much money for Marie Curie”.

Ruth Todd, Community Fundraiser for Marie Curie said: “An enormous thank you from all at Marie Curie to the MSB Woolton St Pauli FC Under 12’s Boys Team, coaches and parents too, who also joined in the running. Our Marie Curie Nurses, doctors and hospice staff are on the frontline, caring for dying people and their loved ones, both with and without coronavirus. Our parks have been very well used during the lockdown, proving to be a godsend for those who want to keep up their exercise routines or who don’t have a garden to relax in. During the hot weather, many people visited parks to have picnics, which is great as long as they put their rubbish in the bin or take it home.

Some people, however, left behind portable barbeques, even in some cases with food still cooking on the burning coals, such as kebabs on big wooden skewers!

If a dog or any other animal got these stuck in their throats it would probably kill them. I have had to report litter in our parks on numerous occasions.

I would urge people to please consider the environment, the wildlife and others who are in the park. Please practice social distancing and take your litter home with you if you cannot find an empty bin to put it in. We can all do our bit to protect our parks.

In recent years we have had to campaign to save parks and green space from greedy developers. Sefton Park Medows, Woolton Woods, Calderstones Park and Walton Hall Park have all been under threat at different times. Many of us

Now, however, the council has gone back to court saying it wants to appeal because of the wider ramifications on national planning policy. If the Council get their way this will have a terrible impact on our Green Wedge, potentially opening the way for developers to indulge in a frenzy of building on our green spaces. I and others are watching this issue with concern and I hope we can continue to resist unwanted development.

Some of our children may not return to school until September because of doubts about whether social distancing can be maintained to stop the spread of covid19.

If you are eligible for free school meals you can get your school to issue you with a letter or voucher that can be used at a supermarket. If you have recently lost your job and think you may now be eligible for free school meals you can register online too at www.liverpool.gov. uk schools and education section.

An urgent needs funds has been set up for people who are currently experiencing hardship, due to the coronavirus outbreak. The fund is open to anyone who is experiencing the following issues: • People who have no food, gas or electricity •

People who have received benefit sanctions or who have applied for benefits but haven’t received an award yet

•

People who were put on furlough by their employer and are experiencing hardship as a result of the 20% reduction in their salary

• People who have a number of children at home and are unable to feed them due to school closures • Any other issues that cause hardship Process The person experiencing hardship should call 0151 233 3053 to speak to an operator. A series of questions will be asked to determine if the person is eligible for support. If so, you will be supported over the phone to complete an online application form. A decision will be given within two days of the application being accepted.

Money from the fund does not have to be paid back. Please remember that we also have the ‘Hugamug’ foodbank facility operated locally for those in who are vulnerable and need help with food or pharmacy supplies. Hugamug can be contacted on 421 1130

Coronavirus in Our City South Liverpool recently saw a spike in cases of Coronavirus, particularly in younger people which is a good reminder that the virus can infect anyone, regardless of their age.

Even with the Government easing lockdown restrictions precautions are still important such as avoiding crowds, employing social distancing and using face coverings.

Liverpool City Council continues to provide help and support for vulnerable residents across the city. I you know of any friends, family or neighbours who are selfisolating or shielding and need assistance with tasks such as arranging shopping or collecting prescriptions help is at hand. Allerton Country Walk If you’re like us you will have been heading out on regular walks over the last few months, weather permitting! Many residents will know that the Allerton Country Walk was relaunched back in 2017 by Sharon with new signage installed along the 7 mile route and a handy map produced (easily available online or via a quick google search).

The route can be completed in sections and takes in some of our neighbourhoods best parks, woodlands, open spaces and public footpaths—it is well worth a go and is a great excuse to have a wander around parts of Allerton, Hunts Cross and Woolton.

Earlier this year the City Council announced that a new memorial woodland would be created in honour of George Harrison here in south Liverpool. The site, located opposite Allerton Towers will be landscaped to improve accessibility and will involve woodland and garden areas.

It is hoped that the 12 acre site will also incorporate some artistic installations inspired by the life and lyrics of one of Liverpool’s most famous faces. Artists are encouraged to submit expressions of interests by visiting www.cultureliverpool.co.uk/harrison.

Current Coronavirus circumstances will undoubtedly effect the timescales involved with the site but we look forward to being able to take full advantage of the garden and landscaped space n the near future.

Pop Up Cycle Lanes In response to Coronavirus and peoples changing transport choices Liverpool City Council recently committed £4 million towards the installation of pop up cycle lanes across our city.

One of the seven pop up routes includes a four and half mile journey which runs from Sefton Park Road, via Kingsley Road, Crown Street and Hall Lane before ending at the University hospital. Other routes here in the south of the city will include Woolton Road and Garston linking them to the centre of the city.

The pop up lanes are a temporary solution but we’ll continue to invest in the cycle network and promote the benefits of being on a bike - it’s a great way to get some exercise and it can be very enjoyable.

History Notes from The Wavertree Society

by Mike Chitty CHARLES TAYLOR - A MILLER’S TALE Charles Taylor was the son of a Bolton-born brickmaker -turned-cowkeeper (another Charles) who settled in Wavertree in the 1830s. Young Charles, aged 15, was recorded by the 1851 Census in Woolton; he was a ‘Millers Apprentice’ in the household of James Longton, close Margaret’ S Publishing to the Windmill in Church Road.

Ten years later he was in charge of his own mill, back in Wavertree, just off Woolton Road. The local historian James Hoult, writing in 1913, stated that he “became tenant in 1857, and worked the Mill for 16 years”. Two unfortunate accidents marred his tenancy. Firstly, the neighbour’s son, 10-year-old Richard Matthews, was killed in July 1866. His death certificate reads “Struck by Sails of Windmill... Lived 1 Hour”. Richard’s father was a Coachman, working for the Bourne family at the adjacent Heathfield House. Secondly, Charles’s young daughter Mary (known to the family as Polly) was – so Hoult tells us – “caught by the hair by the revolving sail. She was scalped and was rendered insensible for 12 hours, but happily she recovered”.

In 1872/3 – perhaps as a direct result of the second accident – the family moved from Woolton Road into Wavertree Village. Like other settlements in the countryside around Liverpool, this was growing rapidly as the port expanded and wealthy individuals chose to live outside, but within a carriage-ride of, the town. The building they moved in to was brand new – a bakery and flour warehouse, with residential accommodation on the upper floors. This had been built in the front garden of No.4 Almond Terrace, which was a large house on the north side of Wavertree Road (nowadays called Picton Road) on the corner of Sandown Lane. Charles’s occupation was described variously, in successive Censuses, as “Miller” (1861), “Miller & Corn Dealer” (1871), “Baker & Corn Dealer” (1881), “Baker” (1891), and “Flour & Corn Dealer” (1901, when Charles was 65 years old).

It would seem that the business prospered, because in the 1880s Charles and his family were able to move into a fine double-fronted house (No.17) further along Sandown Lane. Their place at 83 Picton Road – as the bakery premises were by then known – was taken by John Molyneux, who had moved from Kirkdale Mill and was now employed as Charles Taylor’s manager, having married his 14 14

eldest daughter Marion.

The Molyneuxs (and Charles Taylor’s business) were still there in 1911, by which year the numbering had changed and its address was 203 Picton Road. By 1919, however, the shop had become part of a local chain of bakers & confectioners called Francis & McKay. This closed down in the 1960s, and the building was later taken over by a television rental company (TV Astra) before becoming the VMM Charity Shop.

On 4th July 2020 the premises reopened as ‘ReLoved’.

The Love Wavertree campaign has brought new life to the area, and Charles Taylor’s former building has become their Community Shop and Hub, the centre for a number of proposed community activities.

We are so excited to share the fantastic news with you that the Love Wavertree community has secured a premises for a shop and Community Hub on The High Margaret’ Street! S Publishing

(well, it’s 203 Picton Road, but we know it’s all ‘The High Street’).

We launched ‘The Hub’ on Saturday 4th July 2020, celebrating both our arrival into the High Street/Picton Road family and all of the other brilliant independents trading across Wavertree as part of Independents’ Day UK (@ukindie - held on US ‘Independence Day’).

You can watch a video from the launch at: https://lovewavertree.org/links/ RELOVED’, the Love Wavertree shop, will continue in a similar vein to former shop resident ‘VMM’, primarily trading in vintage and second hand goods, but also stocking locally-sourced gift items and work from local artists and creatives. We plan to use the space as a meeting place for our community and as a base for Love Wavertree, and hope to explore further options to host local services in response to community wants and needs.

We want this to be a place for the whole of Wavertree!

All profits will be reinvested directly back into the Wavertree community.

We will need plenty of help, volunteers and all sorts of skills and expertise as we set out together on this exciting new phase of our journey! What if the same applied to Woolton Village or Woolton Road and the triangle in Childwall?

Unthinkable? Yes it is!, however, it’s also possible unless we get together to help those businesses.

The City Council has embarked on a programme of activity to help our bars, cafes and restaurants reopen but keep their customers safe and socially distancing.

In the City Centre that has meant reducing traffic in some areas and extending pavement cafes. In that context we are ahead of the law on this which is changing to make pavement cafes and other things much easier with less control of matters by the Council and local councillors.

In Childwall, Allerton& Hunts Cross, Woolton and Liverpool 18 councillors have been talking to two sets of people.

1. The business community to ask what help they require. The support we want to give is not just for the hospitality sector but for all businesses who provide a wide range of services to local people, employing local people and spending their profits locally often using other local businesses.

2. The residential community to find out what services they require and what they are prepared to accept in terms of changes to their High Streets.

Our job as councillors is to try and mediate not only between these two groups but also to mediate within these groups. Not every trader wants there to be more pavement cafés for example and not every resident wants their provision to be restricted.

So, residents and businesses need to watch this space. Councillors are doing their bit to keep everyone informed in a situation which is rapidly changing.

WHAT SOUTH LIVERPOOL RESIDENTS WANT Your team of councillors has undertaken a survey which has been distributed in Liverpool 18 and parts of Liverpool 15, 16,17 and 25.

With more than 600 returned either physically or electronically we can clearly see some of the emerging priorities for the key shopping areas: • They want to walk to them or cycle to it much Margaret’ S Publishing more easily and have bicycle racks installed.

• They want the clutter to be removed from pavements so they can walk within the centres more easily.

• They want to use local independent traders more • They want to see a wider variety of shops and services available in the retail areas • They want the areas to be more attractive All this means that there are great opportunities to support businesses of all types and keep our shopping and leisure areas strong.

What the Council and your Councillors have been doing Your local Councillors supported by the Mayor of Liverpool have: 1. Walked the commercial areas with consultants looking at how the physical environment can be improved and waste space made available for community and business use.

2. Started a review of signage to encourage trade and movement within the centres and making the centres out as special places.

3. Made grants available to businesses & community groups to develop their own activities.

4. Commenced a review of the green aspects of our centres with Allerton in Bloom; Woolton in Bloom and Childwall in Bloom.

5. Developed a series of activities in some of the commercial centres with more Producer Markets; small scale seasonal festivals and fun stuff such as local bands and choirs.

6. Helped to establish local marketing initiatives such as the ‘My Liverpool 18’ Facebook page for local residents and businesses and helping to fund extra copies of Margaret’s Publishing Special Edition.

WHAT SOUTH LIVERPOOL TRADERS WANT

Your council teams have held meetings by Zoom with traders in L18 and Woolton and will hold them with other businesses in the Allerton/Hunts Cross and Childwall areas. There are many different types of businesses so there are a number of responses.

• Above all the businesses want to you to use them.

Our centres have a wide range of businesses.

Not quite butchers, bakers and candlestick makers but there are a wide range of quality local shops which pride themselves not only on the quality of their products but also on the services they give.

• The hospitality sector is keen, where appropriate for extended pavement cafes both in terms of size and hours.

• A review of parking to enable an increased number of cars to park away from residential areas.

• Easier access to the areas for pedestrians and cyclists.

• Improved signage to remind customers and potential customers of the services available and the historical connections that South Liverpool centres have to bring in increased trade.

Warning to Under 35s Public Health Officials are warning of a tick up in cases of coronavirus in South Liverpool in recent weeks. The NHS has had mobile testing stations out and are closely monitoring new cases.

It appears that young people generally are going out more (and who can blame them for that!) but are assuming that they are safe and so ignoring social distancing and other precautions.

Young people are being hospitalised in increasing numbers.

Young people might recover very quickly from the virus or not even notice it but the virus might have damaged their immune systems or have caused changes to their brains, bronchial systems, liver, kidneys and heart.

Jimmy the horse The church decided that the gardens needed a complete makeover following St James’ internal and external refurbishment and decided to mark The Queens 90 birthday in 2016 by having a celebration coffee, cake and planting morning on the Saturday closest to it. At the time of planting on that Saturday, Kerry and her team were making the village look lovely as they do each year when a delivery of more plants turned up for Woolton in Bloom from the plant nursery and Jimmy was in the lorry. Kerry said they didn’t have anywhere to put him and just by chance my sister in law, Jayne was walking past and she said we’ll have him..... and that’s how the rather sad looking horse, who we christened Jimmy after St James’, joined Margaret’S Publishing us. He must have been planted up for a trade show or something similar and then brought back to the nursery and put in a corner for a good while as he was very bald in many places.

After trying for a couple of years (and failing) to make him look good I decided to completely replace the compost and replant him, which took about 8 months and over 4000 plants during 2018, doing a few hours each day and he was finished in time for Remembrance Day commemorating the centenary of WW1. In 2019 the summer heavy deluges took their toll but now he’s back at his best.

One of the lovely things during the hours of planting him over the time, has been the conversations with folks walking past, the joy of the little one’s going to preschool in the hall, who have to stop every day to say “hello Jimmy” and most recently during the lockdown he has raised a smile by many lovely comments, one lady recently said to me, “oh he has so lifted my spirit during my daily exercise”, she said it with such feeling....

It was evident that a small number of bars and restaurants had decided to open ahead of the easing of rules, which went some way to creating the situation, but they then failed to act responsibly to try to prevent the issues that they saw unfolding before them. We proactively wrote to licensed premises to raise our concerns and to suggest ways in which they could help to prevent the issues that were occurring, but unfortunately this was ignored.

Regardless of what the circumstances are, whether it is because we are moving out of lockdown, celebrating an event, or just operating premises as normal, all Premises Licence Holders have a duty to ensure that they operate their premises in accordance with the four licensing objectives. We found that this did not happen over the past few weeks despite our attempts to try to advise premises of their responsibilities. Whilst we are aware that some people quite astonishingly think that what occurred over the past weeks was not a concern, we are certain that most residents will agree that the lack of social distancing, the amount of litter

It is worrying that recent concerns had been reported about an increase in confirmed cases of Coronavirus in South Liverpool. Whilst there is a lot of speculation and counter arguments that this could or could not be associated with recent gatherings in Woolton Village because of the timings, it is fair to say that such gatherings must have certainly been a contributor to the issues. It is therefore very important that we all follow the rules, even if some do not agree with them; it does not mean that others should be put at risk.

We recognise how important our small independent businesses are to the Village and in our last article we wrote about how we had met virtually with some of them to discuss ways in which they could be supported to re-open following lockdown, particularly for those that may still not be able to fully operate due to limited space within their premises. One of our ideas was to bring our Farmers Market back as quickly as possible, but to also extend it to a week long market allowing not only the regular stall holders an opportunity to run a stall for a week, but to also invite local businesses to take up a stall and bring their business outdoors. This will send a strong message that Woolton Village is back open for business. The week-long market will begin on Saturday 1st August and run until 8th August, from 9.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m.

As rules continue to ease we are conscious that this is the time that many people may find themselves in financial difficulties owing to the loss of jobs or possibly in need of certain advice. We are therefore continuing to fund the services of the CAB to provide support to people who may need help with a whole range of matters including financial management, benefits and employment advice etc. If you or anyone you know is in need of this type of support, please get in touch with us and we will make a referral to the CAB Advisor.

It is currently difficult for us to hold our regular Advice Surgery; however, we are now holding weekly ‘virtual’ Advice Surgeries every Tuesday from 7.00 p.m. If you would like to have a meeting with us (via Zoom) please e-mail either of us on the e-mail addresses below and we will send you a link with your own scheduled time. Margaret’ Publishing The Reader IceSCream Parlour, Café and the Calder Stones exhibition have now re-opened in Calderstones Park.

The Reader Ice Cream Parlour, followed by The Reader Café, Shop and Calder Stones exhibition are the first parts of The Mansion House to be reopened to the public following the latest government guidance.

The Ice Cream Parlour has been operating as a takeaway service since the start of June providing ice creams, ice lollies, cold drinks, slushies, tea, filter coffee and snacks with new opening times: 12 noon until 6pm, Monday to Sunday.

The Reader Café is now offering a new takeaway menu of hot and cold drinks, pizza, breakfast and pastries from 8.30am - 2.30pm, Monday to Sunday.

The Reader Shop and Calder Stones exhibition are open from 12noon until 4pm, Saturday Sunday.

For the health and wellbeing of customers and staff, we’ve made some important changes so that social distancing can be maintained at all times.

We’re asking everyone who visits the site to follow guidance on social distancing so that we can all stay well when visiting the park.

We can’t wait to serve you our delicious meze platters, gourmet burgers, delightful breakfast selection and authentic Turkish dishes. However, we would like to update you about the new-normal precautions that we have taken.

First of all, we will be operating at limited capacity, and following Government and Public Health guidelines and regulations. The safety of our teams and guests remains our number one priority, and we are continuing to strictly follow the advice of Public Health England and the UK Government. We have worked on various measures to prevent the spread of COVID 19 and keep our customers and staff safe. Below you will find a list of some of the steps we are putting in place: • We have reconfigured our table layout in line with current government advice. We now have a reduced number of tables available as well as reduced group size.

• Hygiene routines will be increased and enhanced. After each seating, tables and chairs will be sanitised. Hand sanitiser will be available to customers and staff at all times.

We are a locally based company who can carry out all your home or office maintenance requirements.

I have worked in the construction industry for many years and have built up a reputation for being reliable and complete work on time and to an excellent standard.

I have City & Guilds qualifications in both plumbing and joinery, as well as providing plumbing & joinery services we can offer other maintenance solutions such as interior & exterior painting.

We work with our clients to deliver projects on time and to budget from fitting taps to full bathroom makeovers so we can take care of it.

We also undertake one off projects if you need something specific to fit into a small space, we can build these to your requirements.

We can fix all those jobs around the home that have been outstanding because there are only small jobs we can do them.

Quite often we find ourselves spending half a day to a day in peoples houses just going round fixing those little jobs , shelving, need putting up, curtain poles etc.

We are flexible on our appointments and fitting jobs around customers requirements.
