Dear Residents,
As local Councillors we’ve secured record levels of road investment for the area, with over £6 million of local road resurfacing work either completed or due to take place. We’re delighted to inform residents that resurfacing is due to resume and at the time of writing, work has either started or is about to start on Tudor Road, Stuart Avenue, Roskell Road, Pinfold Road, Southmead Road and Southmead Gardens. There are plenty more to come and we’re actively lobbying for the work to start on roads such as Northmead Road, Broadmead, Speke Road, Hunts Cross Avenue and Manor Road which are all scheduled to be resurfaced.
On Saturday 6th August, we delivered a Farmers Market in Clarke Gardens, working alongside Liverpool City Council’s Markets team. After months of hard work and planning, it was fantastic to see our event come together and we received some incredible feedback. As a result, the Markets team agreed that we will be able to host more Markets in the park and we returned with another event on 1st October. The weather stayed dry and the community turned out again, making it a great day. It was also a pleasure to be joined by Maria Eagle MP, who took the time to chat to traders and who picked up some great produce too. We’ll be back outside the pub on Saturday 3rd December to deliver a Christmas Market. Please join us from 10am until 4pm and pick up some extra special gifts and treats.
In addition to the Christmas Market, we’re also looking forward to hosting our annual Christmas Tree Lights Switch On in Hunt Cross Community Garden, on Friday 25th November . Established and organised by the Labour Team, this has become a hugely popular event. The day will include carols and performances from local schools as well as a special visit from Father Christmas.
On 28th September, we attended the official opening of the new passenger lifts in Hunts Cross rail station with Maria Eagle MP and staff from Merseyrail. Along with the new trains, this is a huge step towards making the station and the rail network fully accessible. Residents will know that we ’ve been campaigning for the improvements for many years and we are so pleased to see the lifts installed.
Our hugely popular, and free community skip scheme will return after Christmas. The scheme was introduced by Labour and since 2019 alone, we’ve provided more than 200 free skips! We’ll also be holding more community litter picks, and will be writing to residents in advance of coming to their roads. If you’d like us to deliver a free litter picker, please get in touch.
We’re continuing our regular walkabouts with our Police and Community Support Officers and have provided funding for free crime prevention devices for local residents, (including free bike locks, window and door alarms and sensor blockers to stop bank card and keyless car thefts). We’ll be out and about in our communities giving these away and will be writing to residents before visiting their roads but if you’d like one of these free items, you can contact us directly too. hope you are all well and we hope that you will be able to have a happy Christmas and very best wishes to all for 2023.
Clare and Angela are always happy to hear from you - if you want us to visit, please let us know. It’s going to be a really difficult 6 months. Many residents are currently struggling with rising living costs. That’s why it’s important to know what help and support is available now that could benefit you, a relative, friend or neighbour.
For the full range of council services, visit liverpool. gov.uk - Food, energy bills, financial support, house hold costs, mental health and wellbeing, Recently, we spent time at the School of Create, “Makers” Picton Road, opposite the library. They are locally based social enterprise who run many programs for local women and men. Their main pro grams are: sewing into business and Revamp, Re-use, Re-sell -where they teach the practical elements then show you how to sell your products or Service. These are open to unemployed or low income. The next cohort is Jan 23, contact details below. The evening classes are a mix of free or paid for –
depending on circumstances.
One of their core values to support local people to develop a CAN DO attitude and be part of a commu nity hub, make friends and be more happy by making stuff and making friends too.
They run courses in sewing, revamping furniture, revamping clothes, art / crafts decoupage, jewellery design from old stuff. They get a lot of men learning to sew and paint furniture. For example, attendees can access day or evening sewing classes to make practical items such as insulated curtains and slippers to help combat the cold in winter.
During our time there, we learned that they are look ing to expand to support residents with the current cost of living crisis. People can bring in their own equipment in to paint so that recycling is encouraged. As well as practical support, and reducing social isolation by providing friendship and signposting on to other services/ agencies. They are a real community asset and would be happy for you to call in and chat with Mandy and Kelly if you want to know more.

times, and the difference between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots’ is like a tale of two very different cities.
grumbled Jo”…
the opening words of ‘Little Women’ by Louisa May Alcott, published way back in 1868. That sentiment is certainly one that many will be sharing this year: not because of a Civil War (though sometimes it can feel like we’re in the middle of one!) but because of austerity, economic crisis, a two-year long pandemic … the list goes on. It’s very easy to feel that there’s nothing to look forward to as December rapidly approaches
For around 50 years, we’ve had it SO good: consumerism has become a national pas time, with shopping precincts and retail parks crowded every weekend. We’ve got used to flying all over the world in search of the sun; driving out of town looking for somewhere to explore; taking the whole fam ily out for a meal, not for anything special to celebrate, but just because we can. Constant new clothes, expensive perfumes and after shaves; fine foods and wines; faster and bigger cars … the ways that we can spend our hard-earned money seem to have no limits. Yet, suddenly, hardship is looming: for many, it’s already here. Food banks have never been so busy: they can’t keep up with the urgent needs of families struggling to eat, to provide for their growing children and even their babies. The elderly don’t dare turn on their heating, or light a fire, because they’re terrified they won’t be able to pay the fuel bill. These are days when the divide between rich and poor is sharply etched in the faces of desperate families, when suddenly a person’s job is no longer there as redundancies are the result of closed businesses. It’s like a scene from Charles Dickens: we’ve had our great expectations, but now we’re seeing hard
These things are not new dilemmas: in 1843, Dickens had a series of spirits reveal the plight of the poor, and 100 years later, this was also the theme of J B Priestley’s play ‘An Inspector Calls’, in which the eponymous inspector warns that, “We are responsible for each other…the time will soon come when, if [people] will not learn that lesson, then they will be taught it in fire and blood and anguish.”
What will we make of this Christmas? Will there be any reason for joy – will there be any presents? Along with all Christians, I know that the greatest gift of all was given to us on the very first Christmas: a gift of hope, love, forgiveness, inclusion which is offered to everyone everywhere, and which comes in the form of a tiny baby boy called Jesus. Churches everywhere in this great city will open their doors on Christmas Day: you don’t have to be rich, young or beautiful to be allowed in. There will be joy, companionship, sharing. At my own church, our vicar will encourage us to share in games, singing and love for each other: there will be laughter, hugs – family.
As Beth told her sister Jo in that book I be gan with, “We’ve got each other.”
If this Christmas, you haven’t got others to be with, I encourage you to call into church and find the warmth of family that waits there. And may “God bless us, every one.”
Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents,
Liz Roberts, St. Bridget & St. Thomas’ Church, Wavertree

Boketto by David Holper
Looking around, you’ll sometimes notice a red-haired woman sitting by herself gazing out a window or a sad-faced fellow man sitting on the edge of a cliff staring out to sea. We need these seemingly empty moments to consider our place, our path in the wider world-before our hurrying and scurrying is no more.

David Holper has done a little bit of everything: taxi driver, fisherman, dishwasher, bus driver, soldier, house painter, bike mechanic, bike courier, and teacher. He has published a number of stories and poems, including two collections of poetry, 64 Questions (March Street Press) and The Bridge (Clare Songbirds Publishing). David’s poems have appeared in numerous literary journals and anthologies, and he has recently won several poetry competitions, in spite of his contention that he never wins anything. He teaches English at College of the Redwoods and lives in Eureka, California, far enough from the madness of civilization that he can still see the stars at night and hear the Canada geese calling.

One very positive thing that has come about in recent times is the attention people are giving to their wellbeing.
Almost everyone is aware of the importance of mental health.
This has led to an explosion in the number of classes and workshops offering yoga, meditation, reiki and similar activities. People are learning to explore and see what works for them.
I had nothing to do with this world until around ten years ago. At that time, I was a very busy as a musician and artist, but also suffering deep anxiety and a feeling of disconnection from those around me. I know that sounds unlikely, but it's true.
Like many people - and men especially - I was in the habit of hiding my feelings and insecurities as much as possible, trying to maintain a certain persona and hoping that would help me get through the world. It didn't work very well, and I wasn't very happy, for many years. I knew that there must be something out there to help me, and one day I came across a book that seemed to offer exactly what I needed.
The book was about mindfulness and it started me on a long, slow journey to a new outlook.
Mindfulness, as I discovered, is an ancient tradition of training the mind. It is not about forcing yourself to be calm, far from it. Mindfulness is about honouring the feelings that we all experience, including the unpleasant ones, but learning not to become overwhelmed by them. Techniques for this include meditat ing with the breath, also paying attention to the senses and the natural world.
One common problem that many people experience is over-thinking; cycles of repetitive and troubling thoughts which won't go away, no matter what you do. One way mindfulness can help is by bringing you into an awareness the present moment; a sense of being "'here and now". This is a very peaceful place to be, because anxiety is always a result of thinking about the past or future.
As I got more interested in mindfulness, I began attending meditation gatherings and eventually holding my own sessions where I would guide others through the process.
I have since taught mindfulness in a range of different settings, helping people to find peace and balance amid the ups and down of their lives. I have run sessions for people who suffer from chronic pain, be reavement and addictions. I find it extremely rewarding, because I am able to help others through my own experience of transformation.
In October this year I set up a regular mindfulness group at Penny Lane Community Centre.

MORE THAN LOFT LADDERS Get more space at home for just £347+VAT
We’d all like more room at home. But not everyone can a ord to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? In truth, that space is already there. It’s just not being used to its full potential.
For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes lled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the oorspace in an average home. So shouldn’t we be making the most of it?
And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton six years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making our lofts easily accessible. The latest MTLL franchise to open covers the Warrington area and is run by skilled local, Paul Langley, who says the company’s no-frills approach is what most people are looking for.
“We’re not selling £15,000 loft conversions,” says Paul. “This is a low-cost and simple alternative. For just £347 + VAT you can get a ladder that slides easily up and down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure. We can also t a draft-proof loft hatch if required from only £55.”
The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out charges. Paul provides a free guarantee on all parts and labour too.

Harry Tonks is a Liverpool based musician focusing on the acoustic/folk genre.
His influences range from classic artists such as Nick Drake/Bob Dylan to modern artists like Gregory Alan Isakov, Ryan Adams, Elliott Smith, Jeff Buckley and more…
Harry has
When did you first start playing an instrument and when did you first start writing songs?
I started playing flute and a little bit of piano when I was in primary school. Although I picked up the guitar when I was around 10 years old and I was gigging by the time I was 11!
You’re influenced by Nick Drake and Bob Dylan. What is it about their music that inspires you the most?
Bob Dylan’s lyrics are a masterpiece, I love his uniqueness and he always changes his styles. Nick Drake, is such an enigma. Little is known about this young genius. He never found success in his lifetime, and the albums he produced were incredible, a master guitar player and one of my heroes.
You’ve recently recorded a new record with Bill Ryder Jones. What was that experience like?
Bill is a beautiful person, as soon as you meet him you feel at ease. Time is never money with him, he wanted to make sure I was happy with the final product, and what more can you ask for? His studio in West Kirby (Yawn) is so serene, you could go there just for a holiday! He is super talented, he definitely brought out a new musical direction in me that I didn’t know I had, and it shows in this new record.
Is there a particular song you’ve written that means the most to you and why?
There’s a song coming out on the new record called ‘Father’. I wrote it for my dad who was going through some tough times, and I was so nervous to play it to him!
Every time I play that song live, I transport to another place, sometimes I can feel a tear when I’ve finished performing it.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering becoming a songwriter?
Practise makes perfect, I’m afraid. Listen to different genres, be open and there are no rules. The thing I struggled with were lyrics, which I’ve come to realise are super important and are what the listener connects with. The main thing too, is just have fun doing it.
You’ve recently recorded a new record but do you have any plans for further releases?
I’ve already started demoing new songs for another new record, this last record I’ve done was very folly and acous tic. The plan is to rock it up a bit, dusted off my pedals and electric guitars and going to write some uplifting stuff, for once!
Where can people find your music? Anywhere streaming wise, Spotify, Apple Music etc… What are your musical career highlights up-to this point?
I played a show in London with Mick Head a few months back. I was playing in St Pancras church to a few hundred people, absolutely chocker! It was amazing to play my songs in such a beautiful venue. My mum also listened to a new song of mine recently, and said ‘oh that’s lovely mate, is that a cover you did?’ It was me that wrote it! I consider that to be a massive compliment.

ALLERTON IN BLOOM NEWS
That’s it - the last step in our project has been completed!
At 3pm on 8 October 2022 the Deputy Lord Mayor, Cllr Mary Rasmussen, officially unveiled the memorial plaque on our large planter in the Square. The planter now officially belongs to the community. It was a long trek from planning, through an unsuccessful first attempt, then setting up an improved Spacehive website, the fundraising, then installing the planter and filling it with plants until finally the memorial plaque could be unveiled.
And it was a fitting occasion, with a lovely Deputy Lord Mayor, a speech, bunting and an appreciative audience who were then invited to coffee, cake and sandwiches in the Square bistro, all accompanied by music (a guitar duo organised by the bistro). Even the sun made an appearance. Now we need to send our heartfelt thanks again to everybody who made this possible, the donors, the volunteers who helped with the heavy lifting, the helpful city officials and last, but not least our Councillors who smoothed bureaucratic obstacles and even provided extra funds when necessary. Allerton in Bloom will maintain the planter as it does with the many smaller ones in our area and we hope that everybody will find that our flowers brighten up their days a little. Thank you for supporting us. Your Allerton in Bloom

Last month, I wrote to you all regarding the cost-of-living crisis and the anxieties many people across Liverpool Wavertree are experiencing in making ends meet.
I am disappointed that in response to the Government’s mismanagement of the economy the Bank of England has decided to raise interest rates which will no doubt add further to the many worries my constituents will harbour heading into the Winter.
Alongside partners, I am putting on several cost-of-living drop-ins across my constituency in the coming weeks and urge any constituent wanting some advice to come along. No registration is required. I am holding events at the following:
• Thursday 17th November 2022 @ 5.30pm-7.30pm
Big Help Project, 212 Boaler Street, L6 6AE
• Thursday 24th November 2022 @ 5.30pm-7.30pm Wavertree Library, Picton Road, L15 4LP
• Thursday 1st December 2022 @ 5.30pm-7.30pm
Archbishop Blanch CofE High School, 80 Earle Rd, L7 6HQ
If you are unable to attend these events or receive this publication after the drop-ins have taken place, you can always reach out to my office via the normal channels that are published on my website (www.paulabarkermp.co.uk).
I want to reassure constituents that I and my office are doing all we can locally to get as many people as possible the right access to the support they need, and we recognise the unprecedented demand on our local community.
I continue to use my time in London to hold this Gov ernment to account on the support or lack thereof they are providing. I remain concerned that we will witness the return of austerity measures this month which will only hit communities like ours extremely hard. Our public services have already buckled under the strain of cuts and the Government’s refusal to invest in frontline service provision. A decade of pay restraint, low morale and unsustainable work loads have recently seen nurses take the agonising decision to vote for strike action. I will use my voice to advocate for a decent settlement that they can have confidence in.
I was recently appointed as the Shadow Minister for Homelessness & Rough Sleeping.
My office knows all too well that many constituents and families find themselves on housing waiting lists and remain stuck in overcrowded or unsuitable accommoda tion. I will use my new role to continue advocating for solutions to the housing crisis which especially affects large urban centres like Liverpool.
In other news, there will be many events across the month of November marking remembrance with Armistice Day taking place on the 11th of November. I will attend as many as possible to pay tribute to those in our Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice and contributed so much to keep this country safe. We pay tribute best, when we support all our veterans with extra needs as well as serving Armed Forces personnel through this cost-of-living crisis.
The festive period will soon be upon us, and I hope that all my constituents are able to find some time to relax and enjoy much needed time with loved ones, families, and friends. It has yet again been another difficult period but as I said last month, people in our city are at their best when we come together, and I am confident better days are ahead.
You can call the constituency office on 0151 724 5767 please note the phone line is active 10am-2pm Monday to Thursday.

History Notes from The Wavertree Society
by Mike Chitty
WAVERTREE LAKE - Gone but not Forgotten
Wavertree probably owed its existence as a medieval village to the presence of a water supply – the spring which fed the ‘ancient well’ (later known as the Monks’ Well) on the corner of Mill Lane and North Drive. This in turn fed the village pond (known as Wavertree Lake) alongside. Some historians believe that the name Wavertree means “the place by the common pond” – which would seem to make sense.
The Lake is clearly marked on old maps, including the Wavertree Enclosure Map of 1768 and later Ordnance Survey maps. It was popular with the children of the vil lage as a place to fish, and was a popular subject for Edwardian postcards. Sad ly, however, it was also the cause of several accidental drownings. When the new Council housing estate was built, higher up Mill Lane, in the 1920s, and it became necessary to widen the road to take electric trams, the decision was taken to drain the lake, fill it in and use the space as a children’s swing park. Modern maps call this the ‘Picton Playground’, but the road linking the Picton Clock roundabout with Mill Lane still bears the name ‘Lake Road’.
The Lake was the subject of a legal dispute in the 1860s. The Wavertree Local Board of Health (the local coun cil of the day) had planted trees round the perimeter to improve its appearance; The Marquess of Salisbury, however, claimed that it was his property, in his capacity as Lord of the Manor of Wa vertree. In the end the mat ter was resolved amicably – but not before the Marquess had ordered ‘mere’ stones (boundary markers) bearing the letter ‘S’ to be placed around the edge. One of these stones, relocated slightly from its original position, survives to the present day
A photograph loaned to us by a local resident many years ago.
The handwritten caption on the back read: “The last summer of Wavertree Lake, 1928”

Good Market is a place for those who want to shop consciously, who waant to uplift their local creatives and spread good vibes whilst doing so.
We began as the Brainchild of Good Liverpool, an online store that supported local businesses within the Liverpool City Region and beyond during the pandemic. The markets came as a reponse to our retailers wanting to get back out there, to immerse themselves in the community they had missed and begin selling face-to-face once more. Our success has surprised even us, with the response from our community being more than we could ever begin to fathom, and because of them, we continue to thrive.

Childwall & Wavertree Matters
We live in difficult, dangerous and uncertain times.
The economic turmoil in the U.K. has impacted on every household and led to more people facing real financial hardship.
The worldwide energy crisis has made many residents, particularly the elderly, concerned about being able to keep warm this winter. While the people of Ukraine have seen their lives shattered by Putin’s ‘bloody war’generally, our world seems a more insecure and intolerant place. But for all the problems we face, people in our community just get on with their lives and if possible, try and help others. Whether it’s the volunteers who run the Food Banks or the Local Churches and Organisations who are offering warm places to stay and keep warm or the Liverpool families who have taken in Ukraine families. And of course, our Caring Services will carry on with their work all over Christmas the spirit of Christmas will see families and neighbours supporting each other.
Life does go on and just to cheer ourselves up, a few examples of our community in action

LIDL AT THE ABBEY - LATEST NEWS
On 12th August 2022, Lidl UK announced that they will be retaining and refurbishing the former Abbey Cinema building in Wavertree, instead of demolishing it as originally proposed. A planning application (ref.22F/ 2152) has been submitted to Liverpool City Council, indicating how a single-storey Lidl supermarket will be incorporated into the ground floor of the Listed Building, and various external and internal features will be restored.
Lidl have no plans to use the upper floors, but a note on the drawings states: “All upper floor accommodation to be moth balled ... Existing areas to be preserved and existing envelope made good to ensure that no further deterioration can occur”. These extracts from the submitted Design & Access Statement (by Space Architects, of Newcastle-upon-Tyne) give some idea of the efforts being made to enhance the appearance and character of the building:
“3.3.1 Existing main roof covering to be overclad with new covering to ensure long-term weathertightness.
3.3.2 Existing lower roofs to be stripped, repaired as required and finished with new roof covering.
3.3.3 Existing brickwork piers to be carefully taken down to allow for remedial repairs to structural steel frame, before reinstatement as existing.
3.3.4 Existing brickwork to be fully cleaned, checked and made good, with new pointing to the entirety of the building envelope.
3.3.5 All existing external cast iron rainwater goods to be carefully removed for refurbishment and reinstatement.
3.3.6 Existing non-original windows to be removed and re placed with new steel windows which would follow the intent of the original 1930s fenestration.
3.3.7 Existing rotunda structure to be repaired and made good. External tiling to be retained where possible, or carefully removed and reinstated with like-for-like tiles where structural remediation is required.
3.3.8 Main building canopy over cladding to be removed to reveal original slimline concrete canopy. Repairs to existing canopy and re-roofing to be carried out as required.”
