I have been asked many times why we don’t enter ‘Britain in Bloom’ anymore. There are a few reasons and I would like to share a few with you. We don’t have enough volunteers to do the preparation, the planting and the maintenance of the floral features. Although we have not seen had council support towards the costs, we could ,in the past, rely on the weed control , road sweeping and a regular street sweeper to empty bins, litter pick and gather up all the autumn leaves. These are the services that have disappeared due to council cuts and I’m sure will never be reinstated. Why else do we have monthly volunteer litter picks and clean ups. As well as these reasons there was a great deal of work behind the scenes in order to produce everything that was required by the RHS. We don’t need a certificate to show that we are doing a good job so now we continue to keep our village blooming so we can all enjoy it. ~ Kerry Peacock Please get in touch if you can help us… Contact: Kerry Peacock, Horticultural Director Mobile: 07969881270 | Telephone: 0151 421 0222 | Email: kerry.peacock@hotmail.co.uk www.wooltoninbloom.wixsite.com/wooltoninbloom | Instagram: @woolton.in.bloom

Woolton in Bloom

Where has the year gone? It doesn’t seem long since we were taking out our spring plants and preparing all our summer displays ready to celebrate our 21st birthday and Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee. We have experienced a long, hot, dry summer which challenged our volunteers to keep the plants watered.

Sadly, we lost one of our long term volunteers, Frank Seddon. He is greatly missed, not only for his gardening skills but also his company and sense of humour. His memory will live on in Woolton in Bloom thanks to the generous donations from his family and friends.
I’m sure you will agree that they did a magnificent job and my heartfelt thanks go to the team and to the households and businesses that have let us use their water supplies. So, as they say on TV programmes “Thank you, Thank you, Thank you”.

Our plan would save the average household in Woolton £1,000, providing £45 million of support to households across my constituency. It would help get future energy costs under control, help to tackle inflation and reduce energy demand, lowering energy bills in the long term by insulating 19 million homes across t he UK in the next decade.
ENERGY PRICE CAP RISE DEEPENS COST OF LIVING CRISIS
The cost of living crisis is a national economic emergency, leaving people struggling with food, petrol and energy bills they tell me they can’t afford. We are now in September and soon we will all have to turn on our heating to fight the cold.
ADVICEneeds.SURGERIES
This year that won’t be as easy for many people following the energy price cap hike to an eye watering £3549, leaving some people to choose between heating, eating or paying their rent or mortgage, while others won’t be able to afford to turn their heating on at all. Over summer I have heard heart-breaking stories of families using solar lights, charged up in the day to light their house at night, pensioners turning off their heating because half their pensions will go on energy bills and working families having to turn to food banks as they just don’t earn enough to pay the bills.
people locally watched the ITV drama Anne earlier in the month, which highlighted Anne year old son Kevin who died at Hillsborough. The show was a tough watch and brought has been fo r both the truth and for a justice which now sadly will never come. broadcast I took part in the Hillsborough Law Now rally alongside Steve Rotheram, Andy members, survivors and campaigners to highlight the need for both my Public Advocate protect victims of future public disasters from having to endure the same three decade families. Although they will not bring justice for what happened, the Bills would be a women and children who were lost. well was to show how difficult it is for ordinary people to take on the establishment our Bills aim to change, to level up the playing field and shine the light of transparenc any cover-ups or smears can be enacted. Families and survivors would have a designated would be given greater aid in their legal fight for truth . to hear the same lies and slurs that were perpetrated from the first minutes of the we do. Passing these Bills would mean that no one again would r eceive the same people who did no more than just go to a football match. I’ve campaigned with the families and I’ll keep fighting until we get these laws passed.

We have a choice. The Tory government can carry on letting giant oil and gas producers make huge unexpected windfall profits whilst people face destitution or we can do something about it. That’s why Labour has a fully funded £29 billion plan to freeze the price cap, making sure people don’t pay a penny more on their fuel bills this winter.
NEW PRIME MINISTER, SAME OLD PROBLEMS
Labour would pay for this plan in three ways: First, by increasing tax revenues from oil and gas producers by closing the Government’s absurd loophole in their Energy Profits Levy. Second, we would use the already pledged £14 billion of non targeted funding to prevent bills from rising, and finally by keeping energy bills down we’ll reduce the rate of inflation, leading to a reduction of debt interest payments of £7 billion.
wishing everyone a safe and happy 2022. I know that 2021 was again a challenging year season was difficult for many people, with some again unable to see family and friends. for us all.

Over summer I’ve visited food banks that can’t keep up with demand, spoken to housing support workers who are seeing more and more people falling behind and heard from pensioners who don’t know how they will stretch their pensions to meet energy bills. This winter will sadly be a long and hard one for millions.
Westminster has returned after summer recess to not just a new term but to a new Prime Minister in Liz Truss. What hasn’t changed are the problems facing local people that Boris Johnson’s damaging t ime in Downing Street has left behind. Sky rocketing energy bills, petrol prices almost double what they were 12 months ago, through the roof food costs and 18% inflation by January if something isn’t done. Liz Truss doesn’t have a plan for any of it. After 12 years of this chaos and mismanagement the answer is simple we need to elect a Labour government to give Britain the fresh start it

At this sad time following the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth II, we join the many residents of Woolton and Gateacre whose thoughts are with the Royal family during this time. As we reflect on her long reign, we think of her kindness, generosity, and love of her country and of the many ways that our local community have come together over the years to celebrate the milestones in her reign.

The Council recently received a planning application to build 18 dwellings on land below Woolton Manor, at the junction of Allerton Road and Hillfoot Road. Despite this piece of land being part of the Calderstones and Woolton Green Wedge, a planning application was previously granted for this area early in 2019 for 10 dwellings, however those proposed properties were going to be subterranean and these 18 properties are not, which means that they will be easily seen and will be detrimental to visual amenity, they will also damage the physical and visual break that we all enjoy between residential areas and our green space. We argued a number of years ago that if this council allowed any development to take place on any part of Woolton Woods/Camp Hill, it would set an awful precedent for more building work to take place in the future. Sadly, this seems to be something that is becoming reality and we must do what we can to protect our green space. An objection has been submitted alongside objections from local residents asking to Council’s Planning Department not to approve this.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service also have a Youth Detached Team who were deployed on separate occasions to engage with the young people to try and divert them away from the Village. We have arranged to meet with the Council’s Community Safety Team and the local Neighbourhood Inspector to consider what further action can be taken to tackle this current anti-social behaviour.
Woolton Village continues to host a Farmers Market on the 2nd Satur day of each month. We would urge local people to support this monthly event, which will help to bring even more stall holders to the market and make it even more popular. The next market will take place on Saturday 8th October 2022. Please support this market.
Dear Resident,
Over the summer we have been contacted by many residents, and seen for ourselves, the anti-social and criminal behaviour that has been tak ing place throughout the Village. We have been working with the police to try to deal with some of these issues. Many will know that two sep arate Dispersal Orders were placed on the Village, which enabled the police to move groups of young people on who may not have necessarily been committing an offence, but were simply congregating. Some have questioned why these Dispersal Orders were only for short periods of time, and this was due to the amount of police resources available to enforce the order. Police were seen throughout the Village during the period of time that these Orders were in place, moved young people on, dealt with minor offences and took some young people home to Quiteparents.surprisingly, when questioned by police it was found that two of the young people had travelled from as far as Bootle and Birkenhead. We have been concerned about what the reason may have been for them to travel to the Village and had identified a couple of businesses that appear to be an attraction to them We raised this with the Public Protection Department of the Council, and as a direct result of us doing this, some businesses were visited by officers and it was found in one case that a large quantity (290 in total) of illicit e-cigarette vapes were on sale. The business owners were instructed to immediately remove these from sale and a letter of warning issued to them. They were in

It was held at Woolton Woods and Camp Hill and it was lovely to see so many families enjoy a good day out in our much cherished local green spaces. There was free entertainment and food was provided too. Children were thoroughly entertained with the vari ous acts, pets and exotic animals that they were allowed to safely handle. There was even a giant T-Rex dinosaur who made a guest appearance. There was also a judo workshop where the children could participate.I want to say a big thank you to Woolton Youth and Community Centre, the face painters and all the entertainers. We’d all like more room at home. But not everyone can a ord to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? In truth, that space is already there. It’s just not being used to its full potential. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes lled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the oorspace in an average home. So shouldn’t we be making the most of it?
“This is a low-cost and simple alternative. For just £347 + VAT you can get a ladder that slides easily up and down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure. We can also t a draft-proof loft hatch if required from only £55.”

I am Vice Chairman of Merseyside and West Lancashire County of the Royal British Legion and also chairman of Hale RBL Branch. In recent years we have sadly seen the closure of many RBL Clubs and consequently seem to have lost touch with many of our supporters and members - some have let their membership lapse because their club has closed and their own branch has gone into decline; others are still members of the RBL but don’t think they have a branch they could transfer to. This is not the case – there are still several flourishing branches in the area and also several which could be reinvigorated if we could find enough interested people. This is especially important in the lead-up to this year’s Poppy Appeal as we need more volunteers to help us. I’d like to invite anybody who is interested in supporting the work we do, while enjoying the friendship and company of likeminded people, to contact me to have a chat. At the moment, Hale Branch organises the Poppy Appeal in almost all of South Liverpool, including Woolton, Hale, Garston, Halewood, Allerton and other areas but we are limited in what we can do by a lack of volunteers. Netherley Branch also needs support not only with the Poppy Appeal but also to ensure that they continue in the future as a Branch. As for the Poppy Appeal itself, this year’s will begin on 29th October and end on 13th November. Anybody who can help will be in one of several supermarkets not out in the cold. You don’t need to commit to the whole of the Poppy Appeal period – a few hours now and again would be a great help. So, if you are a Legion member without a branch to contact or a non-member who would like to support our serving and ex-servicemen and women, please contact me!

IS IT THE RIGHT TIME TO TALK TO MUM OR DAD ABOUT CARE?
For most of us there will come a time when our loved one or family member requires care, the sooner the warning signs are spotted, the earlier preven tion measures we can put in place to help provide the right care needed. Whether it is one hour per day to help with dressing and washing to several hours per day including companionship and help in the home, the difference our care givers make every day to the quality of life of our clients is immeasurable and humbling.
I prepare students for exams using ABRSM and Trinity exam boards. I feel that taking music exams is the best way to ensure and monitor progress, although I also have students who play or sing purely for pleasure. I encourage students to take exams, especially the higher grades, as grades 6 and above in both practical and theory award UCAS points for University entry. For singing grades, I encourage students to take grade 8 in ABRSM Singing, ABRSM Singing for Music Theatre and Trinity Pop Vocals, all awarding UCAS points.

Steps Work
installed in the grounds of Strawberry Field, Liverpool

The Bandstand is being donated by Cliff Cooper, CEO of the world-famous Orange Amps When one thinks of Strawberry Field, John Lennon or the Beatles, it is music that comes to mind. For many that is what they also first associate with The Salvation Army. The team at Strawberry Field are therefore delighted work has begun on the installation of a uniquely designed bandstand in the grounds of Strawberry Field, where John Lennon played as a child.
After over a year of planning, the construction team have broken ground. Kathleen Versfeld, Mission Director at Strawberry Field said: “We are thrilled to have seen work begin on the long awaited bandstand. We are looking forward to celebrity performances, performances by our Step toWork stu dents and of course by SalvationArmy bands. We are very conscious of the fact that we are in a residential neighbourhood, so our plans include significant steps to avoid noise, crowding or other forms of disturbance. We want the bandstand to bring great joy to our local com munity as well as to our visitors from around the world” For more information on Strawberry Field, visit the website www.strawberryfieldliverpool.com
The Steps to Work programme reaches out to young adults aged 18 – 25 with learning difficulties or other barriers to employment.

When Honorary Patron of Strawberry Field, Cliff Cooper, CEO of Orange Amplifiers, learnt about plans to develop the Strawberry Field site as a training and work placement hub for young people with learning disabilities, he had an idea to donate and build a bandstand in the grounds. Cliff “Onesaid:ofJohn Lennon’s earliest musical experiences was hearing The Salvation Army band playing in the gardens of Strawberry Field. How appropriate is it now to reintro duce music into the gardens! I hope the bandstand will

hub. I look forward to seeing the continuance of John’s legacy, promoting Peace and Love in the world, an ethos which reflects the selfless dedication of The Salvation Army, whose people devote their lives to helping others who are in need and less fortunate than ourselves.”

As local Councillors we’ve secured record levels of road investment for the area, with over £6 million of local road resurfacing work either completed or due to take place. We’re delighted to inform residents that resurfacing is due to resume and at the time of writing, we ’ve just been informed that work will soon start on Tudor Road. We ’re actively lobbying for the work to start on roads such as Speke Road, Hunts Cross Avenue and Manor Road which are all scheduled to be resurfaced.
Our hugely popular, and free community skip scheme has concluded for the summer. The scheme was introduced by Labour and since 2019 alone, we’ve provided more than 200 free skips! We’ll be back out after Christmas with more skips and community litter picks, and we ’ll be writing to residents in advance of coming to their roads. In the meantime, if you ’d like us to deliver a free litter picker, please get in touch.

We’ve worked with Hunts Cross Children’s Centre and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to deliver free, monthly books to local families, (over the years we’ve funded more than 1,500 free books through the scheme!). We’re in regular contact with Merseyrail, about the installation of two brand new lifts at Hunts Cross Station. Along with the new trains, this will be a huge step towards making the station fully accessible. We’ve also been chatting to the Team at the Cheshire Lines Club, about their fantastic fundraising efforts, and have made a donation towards the costs of a new defibrillator, which was recently delivered by the Oliver King Foundation.

any concerns or issues
On Saturday 6th August, we delivered a Farmers Market in Clarke Gardens, working alongside Liverpool City Council’s Markets team. After months of hard work and planning, it was fantastic to see our event come together. It was a beautiful sunny day and the market was a great success, bringing hundreds of people into the park and we were even joined by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, who took the time to chat to traders and Allerton Hall pub staff. After a long day, several of the 18 traders onsite completely sold out of stock and we received some incredible feedback. As a result, the Markets team have agreed that we will be able to host more Markets in the park. Keep an eye out for more updates from the two of us!

There are constant struggles for so many people; lots of which have touched me personally, have affected family, friends and friends I didn’t even realise I had. I came across Clatterbridge Cancer Charity on social media and after researching what they set out to do it was an easy decision. Every day I cross paths with someone who has been touch by cancer, and by taking on the London Marathon I can at least try to help someone who is going through treatment at Clatterbridge right now.”
Growing up in the area, like so many Alex has been touched by the care and support provided by The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.
Praising The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre for its cancer treatments and for the support the staff offer to patients and families Alex understands the need for Clatterbridge to continue growing and developing throughout the area. “Clatterbridge is one of the most respected cancer treatment centres in the country. When I announced I was supporting the Charity at this year’s London Marathon, the number of people who have contacted me, who know someone who is receiving treatment at Clatterbridge, know someone who works there or who is actually under

In 1996, Alex’s Grandad was treated at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre for lung cancer and since then he has had other family members, as well as close friends who have been treated at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. He says “Giving back to the area and the local community is something I look to do in any way I can, and this is a way I feel I can make a difference. It’s been a tough period for me, personally, and for so many others and picking a charity to support is difficult.
going treatment themselves is so heart-warming and it’s their support that is driving me to raise as much as I can for the Charity.”
Alexnow!”has already made incredible strides in his fundraising, and is calling on others to support Clatterbridge Cancer Charity this year. Every pound raised at events like the London Marathon will help to fund innovations in care, life-saving research and the best possible experience for patients at our centres across the region.

“This could be the first of many fundraisers I do for Clatterbridge; I’ve got the determination to help people as much as I can and all of the support I’m getting is making me think ‘what can I do next’. It’s filling me with immense pride that I am able to help a charity local to so many, and that this charity is helping even more people who are going through cancer treatment right now. It’s such a small thing I’m doing, but for others it could be a big deal so what I say is let’s get together for this local, amazing charity and let’s help support those living with cancer right

21st September, when Stuart Rimmer spoke on the old pubs, inns & ale houses of Woolton. This was a very well attended talk, with Stuart selling copies of his book of the same name.
The first talk of the Autumn programme was held on
The talk in October will be given by Dr Rob Kirby, who will be speaking on Liverpool’s role in the Arctic convoys and the contribution of local people to the war effort. Mention will be made of the staff in the Western Approaches Command Centre and the RAF base at Speke. This will be held in St Mary’s hall on Thursday October 20th, starting promptly at 3pm.
Woolton Society members receive regular newsletters as part of their subscription, giving details of all events, planning applications, & the latest news & views. Membership costs from as little as £4 a year, forms can be downloaded from the website www.wooltonsociety.org.uk

Jean Davies, Woolton Society chairman
The Woolton Society has been celebrating its 50th birthday this year, marking a half century since the society was founded to save Woolton hall from demolition. Several events have been held so far, with a very successful coach trip to Another Place in Crosby and a guided walk around central Liverpool, both led by Blue Badge guide Marie Passey. Both events were free to society members. A tree will be planted in Reynolds Park later this year, as a bare root mountain ash will be bought in October or November, on the advice of the park’s gardener Peter Moss. The four heritage plaques which were commissioned earlier in the year will be officially unveiled at around the same time, to coincide with the society’s annual general meeting in November. All society members are invited to celebrate the anniversary, with refreshments provided. The AGM will be held on Wednesday 16th November in St Mary’s Hall.
Most of you will have seen The Crown on Kings Drive. Woolton in Bloom commissioned the crown in 2019 because we wanted a permanent feature and what could have been better than a crown on Kings Drive. 2022 saw the gold crown transformed by Woolton Blacksmiths to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth. After the summer of celebration for the Queen, we now mourn her passing. Just as the Crown passes on we look forward to recognising King Charles 111 with Woolton’s very own crown on Kings Drive.

I’ve given lots to celebrate this event - discounts for all my customers on all their ads for July edition and rounding it up with free cake for all who attended the Woolton Farmers Market on Saturday 13th August. The Lib Dem team kindly invited me to do my cake celebration sharing their table at the Farmers Market where I had lots of helpers to distribute the cakes. It was a very hot day with temperatures in the 30’s and cakes starting to melt! so we had to work fast giving away initially the chocolate cake and then the vanilla one. For those of you who couldn’t attend - apologies but there is none left! Just the memories of the day. A huge “Thank You” to all my readers its with your encouragement and support helps me to continue producing these bi monthly magazines for Woolton. Don’t forget there are 2 other magazines I produce for both L18 Allerton and L15 & L16 Wavertree & Childwall so if you ever wish to see these just let me know as all are available, both in print and digital.

Have you always written songs in a storytelling style?
Rob Gough Promotions can be found on Facebook
It gave me more time which was a lovely thing from a difficult time. I also took part in an online course with Stu Hanna from Megson which was great for getting some fresh ideas and inspiration. There was something about that time that made being creative a comfort and perhaps the introspective way of living brought about some new ideas.

What attracted you to the ukulele?
Alison can be found on Facebook, Twitter and Spotify Article by Rob Gough (founder of Rob Gough Promotions)
It was amazing! I couldn’t believe it, to be honest. There are so many great songwriters around in the local area so I felt really honoured to have won. I love being a judge on it, as well. Liverpool Acoustic does great work for music in Liverpool.
Who were your biggest influences in music?
Go for it. Try things out. Record your ideas and keep them. Don’t give up and do it for as long as you enjoy itbecause that’s what it’s all about really.
Yes, I have always done that. I don’t write so much about myself or my own thoughts and feelings; I prefer to tell other people’s stories. I like to get inside someone else’s shoes, I suppose and imagine what was going on for them and there are so many stories to tell.
How did it feel when you won the Liverpool Acoustic Songwriting Challenge Awards?
This month Beyond The Melody features award-winning storytelling songwriter and ukulele player, Alison Benson, who has won the Liverpool Acoustic Songwriting Challenge on three occasions.

when I was a child, my parents were really into John Denver and so I’ve always really loved that folky sound, so I suppose that’s been a big influence on me. When I was a teenager I really grew to love Simon and Garfunkel we still listen to them all the time now - I loved the words, the music, the guitar playing. I used to sing a lot at home with my two sisters growing up so that enjoyment of making music has always been with me.
Beyond The Melody with Alison Benson
An accident! We were all at my parents’ house and they got an old banjolele down from a cupboard upstairs. It was really battered but I fancied getting one, so I bought a cheap uke and just fell for it. I then started listening to Jake Shimabukuro who plays on another level. I love the sound of it.
Why is music important to you?
“I couldn’t imagine living a life without making music or listening to it.”
Did lockdown affect your songwriting?
It’s an outlet, a joy, a comfort. It’s really sociable. It’s always been a big part of my life and I couldn’t imagine living a life without making music or listening to it. What advice would you give to a songwriter just starting out?
We are so happy to have resumed our Monthly Members meeting in reality at Woolton Golf Club which has a beautiful function suite & accommodates our 100 members comfortably. We have had some tremendous professional speakers this year with Alistair Jackson telling us all about “Recycling Lives” the history of his company initially -scrap metal to the present day ac commodating the homeless and employing prisoners within their business working whilst still in prison to help stop them reoffend ing and getting their lives back on track when they are released. Secondly Gary Green from Blood Bikes telling us all about volun tary work with The Blood Bikes and how they are known and the “Unknown Emergency Service” both were excellent and members enjoyed their talks immensely. We now look forward to a new term for Autumn & Winter full of exciting & interesting Speakers. We now have small controlled groups at the Simpson ground for crafts such as stencilling, Macramé, card making, pottery painting, and many more & continue with groups for reading, walking, quizzes, art & ukulele tuition. We have now introduced a Supper Club with our first evening at the Ying Wah with a great banquet menu enjoyed by over 21 of our members, cinema trips and have had an excellent trip – Aboard the floating grace on the River Mersey with afternoon tea which was very enjoyable on a beauti ful sunny summer afternoon and have another trip to Clitheroes’s Browesholme Hall.
