WINTER PRESSURE BRINGS

Winter pressure hit the NHS hard over the festive period, with A&E departments overrun and ambulances stacked up for hours outside local hospitals. There were reports of people enduring 48 hours in waiting rooms before they were given a bed. Many spent nights on trolleys in corridors. The worst example brought to my attention has been a 54 hour wait for someone suspected of having had a stroke.

wishing everyone a safe and happy 2022. I know that 2021 was again a challenging year season was difficult for many people, with some again unable to see family and friends. for us all.

LIGHT ON NEED FOR PUBLIC ADVOCATE BILL AND HILLSBOROUGH LAW

Long waits have been reported at the Royal Liverpool, Whiston and Aintree hospitals, just as they have across the country. Increases in spending over the Tory years have been at only half the level of the previous Labo ur Governments and our ageing population is piling pressure on social care and community NHS services. Millions of people have been left waiting for treatment and staff are exhausted, traumatised, underpaid and overstretched. Real wages have gone down while waiting times have gone up. This is the fault of 12 years of systematic under -funding by successive Conservative Prime Ministers and their governments. Nobody should be left in an ambulance waiting for desperately needed healthcare or have to sit and wait for days just to see a doctor when seriously ill. We need to call time on the disastrous Tory stewardship of our health service.

people locally watched the ITV drama Anne earlier in the month, which highlighted Anne year old son Kevin who died at Hillsborough. The show was a tough watch and brought has been fo r both the truth and for a justice which now sadly will never come.

In the House on January 9th I asked Stephen Barclay, Secretary for Health and Social Care, why he was nowhere to be seen over the Christmas and New Year period as the problems that were predictable and predicted began to peak. He denied that his actions were too little, too late and claimed that his Government had built a brand new hospital at Aintree as well as at the Royal. I don’t know what planet he lives on but he seems to be out of touch with the reality of the NHS in Liverpool.

ANTI-STRIKE LAW MUST BE STRUCK DOWN

Early in the New Year Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke of how much he valued public sector workers and how he wanted a “reasonable dialogue” with unions. Yet less than 24 hours later plans for a new anti -strike law were revealed. This law would allow employers to sack workers who take part in industrial action and sue unions if minimum staffing levels are not met. This will make things worse and will not work.

Nobody goes on strike for fun. Many workers are desperately trying to save their services or their industry. They have lower real terms wages than when this Government came to office yet are facing a cost of living crisis that leaves them using food banks and unable to heat their homes. I heard that from ambulance crews on their strike day before Christmas. I heard it from postal workers in summer. Strikes are a last resort when negotiations have broken down. This law would be a breach of the fundamental right workers have to strike. I will vote against this legislation and welcome the Labour commitment to repeal it if it passes.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2023

I want to wish everyone a safe, happy and peaceful New Year. 2022 was tough for so many people, harder than any I remember due to the Cost of Living crisis, NHS winter pressures and a revolving door of Prime Ministers and Ministers. I hope that 2023 will be better for you, your family and loved ones.

Dear Resident, Can we begin by wishing you all a Happy New Year for 2023

Prior to Christmas we received a lot of complaints from Woolton residents about not having any water supply. This went on for a number of hours, and for some ran into a couple of days. We were very concerned to learn that despite this happening over a considerable period of time no alternative provision was put in place by United Utilities preventing residents from cooking or even making a hot drink. This has happened a number of times now owing to the breakdown of equipment locally.

We have now written to United Utilities asking about this and previous incidents and what steps have been taken to prevent further incidents from happening, and what contingency measures will be put in place such as the temporary supply of water if further incidents do occur. We will update residents with any response that we do receive about this. We continue to receive complaints from residents about the obstruction that is caused at the top of Out Lane by parked cars. Following a number of years asking the council to take action to resolve this, we decided to use our Neighbourhood Fund to pay for the pavement at that location to be built out to physically prevent cars from parking. This was in 2019, but still nothing happened. We were very disappointed to learn that this money was simply spent elsewhere, which is another example of how this council handles some financial matters. Once we discovered this we were assured that this money would be found again, but to date nothing further has happened. We have therefore raised a formal question with the council asking for this work to now be carried out. We will continue to put pressure on the council until this is done.

This year sees a big change to local ward boundaries in Liverpool, which means that the Woolton Ward in which you currently live will look very different for the elections in May. New Electoral Commission boundaries, which we think were ill thought out, will mean that The main part of Woolton Village will become the Woolton Village Ward (with one councillor representing), the opposite side of Woolton Street

including Kings Drive and Out Lane will move into the current Allerton & Hunts Cross Ward and will become Much Woolton & Hunts Cross Ward (represented by two councillors), and the Gateacre Village area will become Gateacre Ward (represented by one councillor). The changes will also mean that all councillors will be elected for a four year term and the position of Mayor will be abolished and replaced by a Leader elected by the largest political party. We will bring you more information about this as we approach the elections.

Woolton Youth Centre will be holding a holiday Playscheme during the February half-term (Monday 13th to Friday 17th February 2023). The youth centre is currently applying for funding To run this playscheme and so places maybe offered at a much reduced rate or even free. Therefore, if you are interested in your son/daughter attending, please contact the youth centre directly by e-mail to wooltonplayscheme@hotmail.co.uk

Woolton Village continues to host a Farmers Market on the 2nd Saturday of each month. We would urge local people to support this monthly event, which will help to bring even more stall holders to the market and make it even more popular. The next market will take place on Saturday 12th November 2022. Please support this market.

We are continuing to hold our weekly Advice Surgeries (via Zoom) every Tuesday from 7.00 p.m. Please get in touch if you would like to arrange to speak with us and we will send a link, or if you prefer to meet in person we will make arrangements. We also have an advice surgery at the Farmers Market every second Saturday of the month, or you can get in touch via the e-mails above.

LOCALLIBDEMS

Dear Residents -

I hope that 2023 has started well for you and your families. Christmas and New Year can be a very busy for all of us. Last year Dave Aizlewood and I were really pleased to help with Neighbourhood Funding towards the Woolton Christmas Tree. The Woolton Councillors also funded and organised the tree and the entertainment leading up to the switch-on which was another amazing event with a massive attendance. It was lovely to see so many people in our community coming together for this popular, traditional celebration. The Friends of Hunts Cross had a very busy December too, putting on events for the whole family to enjoy. We are very happy to have supported their annual Christmas Walkabout in Hunts Cross. I want to congratulate Lisa Haresnape and her team of volunteers who contribute so much to Hunts Cross and Woolton all year round. They are all amazing!

HIGHWAYS IMPROVEMENTS…

We can report back that work started last September is finally nearly completed. Work began on a complete resurface and new pavements for Tudor Road, Stuart Avenue, Roskell and Pinfold Roads. We are still campaigning for other roads in our area to resurfaced, especially Hunts Cross Avenue, which is in a terrible state near the junction with Halewood Drive, as well as Manor, Kingsthorne and Laxton Road, where repairs are long overdue.

Abbot’s Lea School launches an innovative Positive Behaviour Support service and support hub

One of the largest specialist school in Liverpool has launched a brand new service delivered by its multidisciplinary team of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) experts.

Abbot’s Lea School, Woolton, which delivers a high quality holistic education for students aged 3-19 living with Autism and other complex needs, has recruited a dedicated team of experts to run the bespoke provision.

The hub is designed to offer additional help to students who have become disengaged from education or require extra support with complex needs, including most challenging behaviours. In short, the innovative analytical and therapeutic team works alongside school staff to improve attendance, behaviour and through both, success of the young people with autism and complex learning and social, emotional and mental health needs.

The school proudly adopts a positive behaviour support philosophy, stating that:

• All behaviours happen for a reason

• There are four basic functions of behaviour

• Appropriate behaviour requires skills; we teach these skills

• We never give up on our students

As a result, rather than rewarding or punishing specific behaviours, the school seeks to understand the function of the behaviour and, by assessing the social and physical environment in which the behaviour happens, it uses this understanding to develop support that improves the quality of life for the person and those around them. In doing so, the school always keeps the student at the centre of its work, with their views and those involved in their education and care (including family) central to the programme of support.

The PBS service and the support hub is headed up by the school’s positive behaviour support leader, Claire Welch. Claire is a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA), who has worked with children and adults with complex needs and challenging behaviour for the past 18 years, across a range of settings in the North West and North Wales.

Claire’s vision for the hub is to ensure that every child leaves school with the skills to lead a full and meaningful life reducing the risk of crisis behaviours and possible intrusive support or incriminating social sanction.

Six positive behaviour support assistants have also joined the team and provide support to assess students’ needs and support class teams in creating positive risk-taking, skills’ development and relationship building,

as identified in the function-based analysis. The hub is located on site of Abbot’s Lea School and is split into two main functions: the first space supports students to reengage with education where they struggle to attend school, and the second space supports students with highly challenging behaviours when these lead to dysregulation and disengagement from their class-based programme of study.

Claire Welch said: “I was attracted to the role initially due to Abbots Lea School’s ambition to be the best school specialist school in the world. Alongside this, having met the headteacher and the senior leadership team, I was excited at the prospect of being able to create a resource that provides bespoke support for the students with most complex needs who don’t always get the help and understanding they deserve.”

Headteacher of Abbot’s Lea School, Mrs Ania Hildrey, said: “Our school never gives up on students. We aim to operate a non-exclusion policy and yet, over time, like many other schools, we have found ourselves in a place where “nothing worked” for some of the most complex of our youngsters.

“Rather than give up, we have worked hard to come up with an innovative solution. Having piloted, over the past two years, a nurture provision approach, we learnt a lot. Some of the strategies used worked well and many did not add value at all. This led to a refined project: a truly multi-disciplinary approach that blends various schools of thought and methods of working to best support the ever-growing complexity of our population.

“The creation of our PBS service and the support hub has already transformed lives of some of our students and we have only just begun. Furthermore, the insertion of new expertise into the staff team has reinvigorated us all – after all, if teachers stop learning, the learning stalls, too!

“We understand that all behaviours happen for a reason, and we have taken it upon ourselves to delve deeper into what the most challenging behaviours might mean, so that we can find the right solution for each individual young person in our care, and ensure they have access to the best education and, more importantly, life’s opportunities, possible.”

Mrs Hildrey added: “I have every confidence that Claire will continue to successfully lead this new provision, supported capably by our amazing positive behaviour support assistants and the entire school team.”

Let’s Reclaim Our Village part 2

Since I first wrote about the worrying escalation of anti-social behaviour in the village, in November, a crescendo was reached later on in the month with the stabbing of two men following an altercation In Allerton Road Woolton. The immediate outcome was a brief spotlight in the local media together with an enhanced police presence but the indications are that nothing has really changed. More CCTV cameras in the village that give clear lines of sight outside the trouble spots would be welcome but in a sense they are sticking plasters on what is becoming a gaping wound

Some of the response from other parts of the city has been revealing. Quite apart from the sentiment that ‘What are those posh people in Woolton complaining about?’, it has become clear that although Woolton has recently been in the frontline, is but one canary in the coal mine that tells us that for too long the nation’s suburbs have been neglected in comparison with the effort put into policing and regeneration in the urban centres. This has finally struck a chord with politicians at the national level, although it remains to be seen whether this resonates more locally.

Readers familiar with the history of Woolton will know that social disturbance is not a new phenomenon and was not uncommon in the past, not least on high days and holidays when outbreaks occurred, lubricated by alcohol from the many pubs in the village.

In recent times, each spring has seen a new crop of teenagers, hanging around gathering spots including Sainsburys, Lodes Pond, and Woolton woods, basically at a loose end and mostly causing nuisance rather than menace, but it is the levels of this that seem to have changed over the last couple of years, perhaps reflecting the general upsurge of violence that has been noted as we have come out of the Covid pandemic.

In part this may be a manifestation of the damage the pandemic has caused to young people whose lives were blighted in so many ways. However, dwelling on this, rather than on solutions, is unlikely to get us very far. Rather we should ‘be tough on the problem but also on the causes of the problem’, to quote a phrase.

In his book, ‘ The tipping point’, Malcolm Gladwell explores how New York went from being one of the most violent cities to being one in which people were able to go about their daily lives with enjoyment and without fear. At the heart of the solution was the implementation of what came to be known as dealing with broken windows, or zero tolerance of low level nuisance and crime, which creates the soil in which more serious things can happen.

We don’t have to go far to see what this could mean for us here in the village and everybody has a part to play: residents and parents; local businesses; the schools, churches, and local community groups; local councillors, the MP, and City Council; and not least the agents of enforcement including traffic wardens and the police.

Our broken windows are speeding cars, parking on double yellow lines and pavements, littering and discarding half eaten food, putting profit and self-interest before social responsibility in business, parental failure to properly supervise their children, and a general failure to show kindness in the small things of everyday life. That all is not lost is illustrated by the recent story doing its rounds of an adult who bailed out a young person with autism who found they didn’t have enough money for their purchase at KFC.

However there is a limit to which individual action is sufficient to deal with what confronts us. That requires the organised efforts of our community in the form of its local institutions together with the higher level organisations that are supposed to protect and promote our quality of life.

www.margaretspublishing.co.uk 22

When I was a teenager growing up in Woolton, the churches reached out to each of us with youth clubs, Saturday dances and other social activities, whether we were religious or not; they had not been captured by the middle class from further afield; the schools had standards which included their responsibility to the community in which they sat and didn’t stop at the school gates; the Village Club was more than a drinking joint but ran a legion of football teams and other social activities, and it is inconceivable that local councillors would have stood by and allowed the village to be taken over by fast food outlets and late night drinking establishments.

We also had our own meaningful local police who knew the community and could provide intelligence to Liverpool Police, and the City Council which they were part of, if a local villain was operating on a bigger footprint. Council tax payers in Woolton each contribute hundreds of pounds to Merseyside police each year; yes, the police must tackle serious organised and cyber-crime and keep the city centre safe, but we in the suburbs have a right to demand Value For Money in our own neighbourhoods.

What is missing are plans for the village and for each of Liverpool’s urban villages and suburbs; such local plans developed in partnership with local residents, are commonplace in more rural areas of the country. Twenty years ago, in a publication for the Woolton Society, ‘A Vision for Woolton’, I spelled out some of the possible components of such a plan that built on the rich menu of assets and resources of our blessed village. It fell on stony ground and since then we have lost some of the anchor facilities such as Woolton Baths, Library, Cinema, and the wider social dimension of the Village Club that not only made this place special but provided diversion and enrichment for our young people. Rather than a special village that nurtured great creative talent we are on the road to cultural poverty in a mundane and potentially frightening neglected and abandoned suburb.

So this is a challenge and a call to arms. There are still many wonderful assets to be found in Woolton. Perhaps the most important is the ability of local people to self organise around specific issues such as support for the lonely and elderly in the form of Woolton Community Life and other valuable groups; we have the Salvation Army resource centre at Strawberry Field, nearby we have MSB Woolton Football Club, and in Allerton Towers we have the basis of a major youth facility in the Merseyside Youth challenge Trust- Outdoor Activities Centre, sadly lacking in capital and adequate investment. There are many more. What is missing is a coherent vision for how we make the most of this 1000 year old oasis in South Liverpool and how we can work together with our neighbouring communities across the city in the next stage of our city’s renaissance.

Woolton residents and groups can only do so much acting alone. I believe they stand ready to play their part but now it’s up to others: local businesses; the schools and churches; local councillors, MPs, the City Council, the Police and other enforcement agencies, to hold up the mirror and step up to the plate. Are you up to it? Are you fit for purpose?

MORE THAN LOFT LADDERS

Get more space at home for just

£347+VAT

We’d all like more room at home. But not everyone can a ord to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? In truth, that space is already there. It’s just not being used to its full potential.

For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes lled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the oorspace in an average home. So shouldn’t we be making the most of it?

And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton six years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making our lofts easily accessible. The latest MTLL franchise to open covers the Warrington area and is run by skilled local, Paul Langley, who says the company’s no-frills approach is what most people are looking for.

“We’re not selling £15,000 loft conversions,” says Paul. “This is a low-cost and simple alternative. For just £347 + VAT you can get a ladder that slides easily up and down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure. We can also t a draft-proof loft hatch if required from only £55.”

The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out charges. Paul provides a free guarantee on all parts and labour too.

For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now! Call 0800 0359 880 or visit the website at www.morethanloftladders.co.uk

JAYNE THOMPSON MUSIC TUTOR

I am a private music tutor, specialising in piano, singing, GCSE and A Level Music, Music Theory, Composition, audition practice, performance practice, and Secondary School entrance Music Aptitude Test coaching. I teach in person at my home in Woolton or online through Zoom. I studied music at Cardiff University for 4 years with Martin Jones and Professor Robin Stowell, achieving a BMus (Hons) and MA in Piano Performance. I have 31 years’ teaching experience, 25 of those years as Head of Music, including 15 years as the Director of Music at Merchant Taylors’ Girls’ School, Crosby, Liverpool from 2000 to 2015. Teacher, Composer, Arranger, Accompanist and Conductor. Qualifications include MA in Performance; Mus(Hons); PGCE; ALCM Diploma. I like to arrange regular student concerts at venues such as St Nick’s Church in Liverpool, giving students an opportunity to perform in public. Before the Covid Pandemic I was organising termly student concerts. I prepare students for exams using ABRSM and Trinity exam boards. I feel that taking music exams is the best way to ensure and monitor progress, although I also have students who play or sing purely for pleasure. I encourage students to take exams, especially the higher grades, as grades 6 and above in both practical and theory award UCAS points for University entry. For singing grades, I encourage students to take grade 8 in ABRSM Singing, ABRSM Singing for Music Theatre and Trinity Pop Vocals, all awarding UCAS points. I have taught all ages, from the challenges of a 2 year old to retired adults wishing to take up a new hobby. I teach beginners to Diploma and beyond. All students are encouraged to perform in my student concerts. As the Director of Music at Merchant Taylors’ Girls’ School I organised and led 5 European Music Tours (Belgium 2010, Holland 2012, Belgium 2013, Italy 2014, France and Belgium 2015), conducting choral concerts in prestigious venues: Notre Dame (13th July 2015), St Mark’s Basilica (2014), the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres (2010, 2013 and 2015). I set up and ran a Saturday Morning Music School, Crescendo, for 5 years. Please see my Linkedin page for further details: IN/jaynethompson22

J & M GREEN MORTGAGE SERVICES LTD

We are a multi-award-winning family business, with a team of Self Employed Mortgage and Insurance Brokers who work out of our offices on Allerton Road, Liverpool, and pride ourselves on our work ethic, customer service and industry knowledge. We are able to provide advice on the following:-

• First Time Buyer Mortgage

• Remortgages

• Help to Buy Mortgages

• Buy to Let Mortgages for new and established landlords

• Shared Ownership Mortgages

• Life Insurance

• Equity Release

• Business Protection

• Home Insurance

• Income Protection Cover

Recently we’ve welcomed Mark French to the J&M Green team. Mark has a wealth of experience and brings with him a new string to our bow; Equity Release Mortgages.

Equity Release is a facility that allows you to release funds from your property if you are a homeowner over the age of 55. There are a wide variety of plans on the market, all of which can be explained by Mark. Depending upon your needs and requirements the plans can even be set up to require no repayments during your lifetime. There are numerous reasons why more and more people are taking advantage of the ability to release equity from their property, including home repairs and improvements, repaying existing mortgage or debt, home care (rather than enter a care home), gifts to family (maybe to get them on the “property ladder”) or even the holiday you’ve always promised yourselves. Whether taken as a lump sum, regular payments, or a combination of both, you could release up to 60% of the value of your home tax free. With the right plan, you can still move home in the future, guarantee an inheritance for your family and ensure that you’ll never be asked to move out of your home you’ve worked so hard for over the years.

For a free, no-obligation chat about Equity Release, or any of the other services mentioned, why not give us a call on 0151 230 0909 any time.

J & M Green Mortgage Services Ltd is an appointed representative of PRIMIS Mortgage Network. PRIMIS Mortgage Network is a trading style of Personal Touch Financial Services Ltd which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

TEN STREETS WINE

What at first seemed a bit of a disaster actually turned into an opportunity as it gave them the time and space to think about something they really cared about – the wine. The wine list at Piccola Italia was very well regarded and Clare and Tom decided they wanted to share their wine choices more widely, hence Ten Streets Wine. I’ve known Tom a long time - I’m married to his sister after all - and he got me involved because he knows I love wine just as much as him. A win-win as far as I was concerned. So, in July 2020 the three of us started on our wine journey together…

Three of us run the business, Tom Williams, Clare McKenna and me, James Wilson.

Tom and Clare first worked together in 2016 when Tom and a couple of friends opened an Italian restaurant called Piccola Italia in Litherland. Clare was their restaurant manager. It became a firm favourite with foodies in North Liverpool, but unfortunately the first lockdown in March 2020 meant they had to shut up shop.

Our Wine Tasting Centre is in Dublin Street, a stone’s throw away from the famous Stanley Dock. It’s an area steeped in both history and drink. The Stanley Dock has a rum warehouse on one side of it and there’s still a bonded warehouse on Dublin Street itself.

On separate occasions the Beatles and Bob Dylan have been photographed on our street so, all in all, we feel we’re part of a very cultured tradition. Carving out our own part of that is very important to us.

What started off delivering wine during lockdown turned into regular zoom wine tastings so when lockdown was lifted and we could finally host our in-house tastings there was no stopping us.

We now hold regular in-house events, from wine tastings, bottomless brunches to comedy nights and we also hire our space out for private parties throughout the year which is proving very popular. We are looking forward to the future here in the Ten Streets area and can’t wait to see what other local businesses join us on this journey Check out our current events by scanning the QR codes below:

National Garden Scheme donation to Marie Curie backs future healthcare leaders on Merseyside

There were smiles all round at Marie Curie when a generous cheque was handed over. The National Garden Scheme donated over £47,575 to fund a leadership project for nurses and allied health professionals around the UK.

also share outcomes from their service development or workforce project.

Rachel says: “I noticed many years ago while working as an adult bereavement counsellor a lot of issues were related to unresolved experiences as a child. So that empowered me to retrain as a Children and Young Person’s Counsellor.

“I help children pre and post bereavement. And whilst continuing my role I have now gradually stepped into a leadership role as Allied Health Services Manager for Marie Curie’s Liverpool Hospice. The palliative care journey doesn’t stop when the patient dies - we carry on caring for the patient’s family members of all ages, in their grief.”

Janette goes on to say: “I have worked for Marie Curie for four years as a Hospice Ward Staff Nurse and now I am a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Hospice Impact Team - a new initiative across Liverpool that integrates services to keep palliative patients out of hospital so they can have the best end of life experience possible at home.

“I joined Marie Curie for the opportunity to help patients to live well until they die, and I love being able to offer the full range of my expertise for the benefit of each patient.”

Both Rachel and Janette agree that the Nightingale Challenge is as an opportunity to learn from experts but also to engage with others across Marie Curie to create a valuable network, to build on knowledge and skills and ensure people on Merseyside experience the best care at the end of their lives.

The money was raised from volunteers across the country opening their gardens to visitors to raise funds for the end of life charity.

The National Garden Scheme Nightingale Programme has started for a second consecutive year, with 16 Marie Curie Nurses and Allied Health Professionals signed up. This year Rachel Morris, Allied Health Services Manager and Janette Pagan, Impact Team Clinical Nurse Specialist, who both work at the Marie Curie Hospice in Woolton, are taking part in the scheme.

The programme is unique at Marie Curie as it supports the next generation of healthcare leaders in palliative and end of life care.

Each delegate is assigned a mentor and learning is undertaken via workshops, action learning sets and regular shadowing opportunities.

At the graduation in February 2023, each delegate will

Marie Curie has been a beneficiary of the National Garden Scheme for 26 years, receiving over £10million in funding, including a £450,000 donation this year alone. Money is raised entirely through volunteers opening their gardens to visitors in exchange for a charity donation. The National Garden Scheme is Marie Curie’s longest standing charity partner.

George Plumptre, Chief Executive of the National Garden Scheme says: “As part of our annual funding for Marie Curie, which we are proud to have given for more than 25 years, targeted support like this for the benefit of Marie Curie professionals is really important to us. At a time of unprecedented workforce challenges throughout healthcare, giving these brilliant nurses and other professionals the leadership skills that empower and boost their careers has never been more vital.”

Beyond the Melody with Jazamin

Currently developing her debut EP, Jazamin is a singer-songwriter who has also been performing with Sense of Sound since 2005. In 2015, her song ‘Ten Years’ was selected for Glastonbury Festival’s Emerging Talent Competition’s Longlist by Clash Magazine for its “skilfully executed, folk-derived songwriting”. jazamin.co.uk/music

Who are your biggest influences?

Skunk Anansie, Erykah Badu, Little Simz, Joni Mitchell, Soul II Soul, and Eurythmics… plus hundreds more!

How are things going with your debut EP?

Slowly, but I’m making progress… I have one song fully recorded/mixed, and loads more ready to record. I’m going back into the studio this month.

What can people expect from your debut EP?

Political songs, songs about love, loss and addiction. Songs about finding strength and living life to the full. I’m collaborating with a few people to get a really full sound.

How did you get involved with Sense of Sound?

I played a gig and Jennifer John was there. She asked if I wanted to join and if I was free to sing vocals on a dance track they were recording - so I did!

What do you enjoy most about singing with Sense of Sound?

The feeling when we sing together - it’s powerful, it fills me with happiness/energy, and it helps me mentally/creatively.

How do you feel when you perform live?

Amazing, terrified and exposed! I have learnt techniques to channel my energy directly into my performance, meaning I actually enjoy it now.

What is the most challenging thing about writing songs?

How slow it is! I have a love/hate relationship with the process. I lack patience, but I’m also a perfectionist, so I get frustrated because initially, my songs don’t sound how I want them to. I’m always writing new lyrics and making up little tunes and I tend to walk away if things aren’t working, then come back to revisit things. It feels amazing once

you finally get to the point where you’re happy with a song!

How do you write a song?

Writing is a cathartic way to process and cope with my thoughts, feelings and emotions. I write as freely as possible, without worrying about the outcome or what people may think – otherwise it becomes contrived. I then develop my thoughts into lyrics. Writing is a private process – I don’t share until I’m ready. Musically, I sing around/play with notes on guitar/piano, make a rough recording and then ideas will go around in my head and I’ll keep developing things.

Did the pandemic affect your songwriting?

Yes - we had to cancel all planned recording sessions, but I used the time to develop my music and to revisit/finalise songs I was working on.

What advice would you give someone who is looking to start a career as a songwriter?

Learn your songs inside out before gigging. Don’t stress if you fuck up. Say yes to as many opportunities as you can!

Dear Residents,

We hope you enjoyed your Christmas and the New Year! Can we offer our best wishes to all of the local residents and readers for 2023 and beyond.

We thought we would run through some of the work we have been involved with throughout 2022 and offer an insight into what we have planned for the beginning of the new year.

We’ve secured record levels of road investment for the area, with over £6 million of local road resurfacing work either completed or due to take place. At the time of writing, resurfacing work is nearing completion on Tudor Road, Stuart Avenue, Roskell Road, Pinfold Road, and is starting on Broadmead, Northmead Road, Southmead Road and Southmead Gardens. There is plenty more to come and we’re lobbying for the work to start on roads such as Speke Road, Hunts Cross Avenue and Manor Road which are all scheduled to be resurfaced.

Following our events in August and October, on Saturday 3rd December, we delivered a Christmas Farmers Market in Clarke Gardens, working alongside Liverpool City Council’s Markets team. After months of hard work and planning, it was fantastic to see the day come together and as a result, the Markets team have agreed that we will be able to host even more Markets in the park. We were joined by Labour Group Leader, Cllr Liam Robinson to promote the Christmas Market on #SmallBusinessSaturday. It was also a pleasure to be welcome the Lord Mayor of Liverpool and Maria Eagle MP, who took the time to chat to traders and who picked up some great produce too.

In addition to the Christmas Market, we held our annual Christmas Tree Lights Switch On in Hunt Cross Community Garden. Established and organised by the Labour Team, the day included carols and performances from local schools as well as a special visit from Father Christmas. Hundreds of people came to enjoy the event and together we also gave out almost 150 selection boxes to local children.

In the build up to Christmas, we also joined other Labour Councillors, as we worked to fund and deliver 70 Christmas food hampers for families in need across South Liverpool. Huge thanks go out to Garston Adventure Playground and the Masonic Lodge who helped with additional funding and drop schools who identified the families who might benefit from some extra help this Christmas.

We’re continuing to work with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to fund books for children, and together we’ve sent out almost 2000 free books to local families. We were also happy to make a recent donation towards Woolton Air Cadets purchase of outdoor equipment and clothing, to support their excellent work with young people.

Lastly, our hugely popular, and free community skip scheme is returning and we ’re back out in the Allerton area throughout January. The scheme was introduced by Labour, and we’ve provided hundreds of free skips! We’ll also be holding more community litter picks, and will be writing to residents in advance of coming to their roads. If you ’d like us to deliver a free litter picker, please get in touch.

THE WOOLTON SOCIETY

2022 was a momentous year for the Woolton Society as we celebrated our golden jubilee in style.

A series of free events for members were held, described in previous editions of the L25 magazine. The year culminated in the Annual General Meeting in November, when a social gathering with refreshments followed when the business was concluded. A celebration cake bearing the society’s logo was shared, which had been made by a member of the local W.I.

Peter Moss, who has given invaluable help to the society in selecting & planting the tree. The society now looks forward to the next fifty years, with a programme of talks & events beginning in February. Well-known local speaker Ken Pye will be giving a talk entitled “Of Giants & Duck Hunts” which is a history of Hale Village. This will be on the afternoon of Thursday 16th February at St Mary’s hall off Church Road in Woolton. Complimentary refreshments will be available from 2.45pm.

Since then a tree has been planted in Reynolds Park, a mountain ash, variety “Sunshine” which appropriately will bear golden berries in Autumn. The tree can be found in the park to the left of the path leading to the walled garden, with an information plaque planted next to it explaining that it is to mark the society’s fiftieth anniversary. The tree had been chosen on the advice of chief gardener

The speaker in March will be David Hearn, with his subject being Liverpool Memorials. This will also be an afternoon talk, as members have expressed a preference for these during the Winter months. The talk will be at Mary’s hall starting at 3pm, again with refreshments from 2.45 pm. All talks are free to attend & open to all, non-members as well as members of the society. Members receive a regular newsletter with all the latest news & views as well as advance notice of all events. The society now has an Instagram account so we can be followed on @thewooltonsociety as well as on our website www.wooltonsociety. org.uk. Membership of the society starts at £4 a year, & membership forms can be downloaded from the website. The notice board beside Coast café also has details of upcoming talks.
