Margaret Davies &
We have had a lot on since we last spoke in April 2022 - I’ve just recently celebrated my 100th bi monthly L25edition in July so rounded it off with free cake @ the Woolton Farmers Market in August. Time is fly by I can’t believe we are well into Summer experiencing scoring high temperatures and can’t believe next time I speak with you all it will be November with (dare I men tion it) Christmas just around the corner when it will be a lot cooler, darker evenings after clocks go back in October giving us those shorter days.

Thanks again to all the donors, our councillors and the volunteers who made this possible. We hope it will become the asset to the community that we Theenvisaged.last, but not least, important event for us was the judging of our planters by the RHS. In order to present them in the best possible light we had two evenings of weeding and litter picking around Allerton Road. Thank you, Penny Lane Wombles, who teamed up with our Litterati to clean up - on the hottest days of the year, no less. For the last few years, the RHS has awarded us with a certificate of ‘Outstanding’ for our efforts, which is the highest award in our category, and we are confident that we will receive it again this year. We now maintain around 70 smaller planters at the Library, along Allerton Road and Rose Lane as well as 3 large ones in the Library Green, at the bottom of Green Lane and in the Square. Two of the Library planters have been made into small herb gardens for the community where everybody can pick what they need. In addition to that we have planted fruit trees and -bushes around the Library. If you have some time to spare - we need volunteers to help us look after our planters, either with maintaining the planters or becoming part of the ‘Litterati’. You can contact us via our Facebook page or email us at allertoninbloom@yahoo.com. Please keep on supporting us.

SUMMER IS
- and this year finally without COVID restrictions. That means that on Saturday, 2 July, we could hold our Summer Garden Fête in front of the Library in our usual way, with the whole array of stalls and refreshments. Fortunately, the weather played along and our coffers got a sizeable (and much needed) refill. Our big planter in the Square has got its plaque and it has now truly become a memorial planter.

'Inside books there is perfect space and it is that space which allows the reader to deal with the normal problems of gravity' 29 September - 2 October Online and at the Mansion House, Calderstones Park. www.thereader.org.uk/events Jeanette Winterson The Pleasures of Reading Gravity is a festival for our times that fuses great writing with intimate conversations about life’s ups and downs.

• Our own products have been rotting in fields because there was no-one to pick them.
• Foreign investment into the UK has plummeted because other Countries no longer see us as the obvious route into Europe. We cannot deal with the European problems in the short term but there are things that we can do now.
Well, I am afraid it is absolutely obvious. Many of the inflationary pressures on us are caused by Brexit. Brexit has:
• Increased bureaucracy and created huge queues at Dover and other Southern ports which cost money.
1. For a limited period remove or reduce the VAT take from fuel. The Government is actually making a vast profit in increased VAT take on inflated power prices.
Liverpool is one of the most generous cities on Earth, so you know that when the food banks here are running out of donations the situation is grave indeed. We need action and we need it now before people start to die of cold in the coming Winter.
The cost of living is a crisis for us all
3. Pay people properly. We have a summer of discontent because people on low and medium earnings are being offered between 0 and 5% pay increases when inflation is tipped to reach 11%. Our Country is still a relatively wealthy one, but its resources are not shared evenly. Our Government does not un derstand this. If it did a suggestion from Liz Truss that public sector workers outside London could earn less money would never have surfaced.
• Tariffs have come into play on some products because not only did we leave the EU we left the single market.
All the excuses are coming out. It’s the war in Ukraine, its increased consumption post lockdowns, it’s a move away from fossil fuels. All those are true but together they do not add up to the full picture. Inflation in France, Germany and Italy is substantially lower than ours although their power concerns should be higher because they are more dependent on Russian gas. So, what could the difference be?
2. Impose a windfall tax on the power companies some of whom are making record profits of £7 billion a quarter. Use that profit to help low and medium level earners to boost their spending capacity.
The biggest set of concerns that are being relayed to me at the moment relate not to council problems but the problems of people having to cope with the daily grind of soaring inflation. Families who have always had enough money, but not vast amounts are being pushed to the edge. Families who didn’t have enough to begin with are facing the choice, especially in the winter, of heating or eating.

We also ran a raffle to raise money for Fans Supporting Food Banks, who are a local charity doing wonderful work in Liverpool. We had round 20 prizes donated by various local businesses, and managed to raise £800. With the current cost of living crisis and rise in poverty, we believe this is an important charity that brings our city together. We understand it is a very difficult time for many people and not everyone can afford basic essentials such as food, so we wanted to fundraise alongside the festival for a good cause.
We came up with the idea of Italiallerton a few months beforehand; because we wanted to highlight all the amazing fresh Italian produce we get at our shop. We thought it was a good theme to involve other businesses again too, as we have done similar events in the past, but this one really grew and grew!
We ended up with about 15 businesses involved - most of them set up outside our shop and others put up stalls in front of their own premise - offering samples and things to buy. We had everything from cocktails, limoncello, focaccia, pizza, desserts, fresh Italian produce, recipe boxes, cannoli, jewel lery, coffee, pasta, paella, Italian cans and jars and more! We really wanted to help bring people to our area and promote the local businesses here too, and we thought this would be a fun event to attract people. The idea was that it could be a sort of trail along Allerton road area with all things Italian. We put together a map to help people understand what was on offer. Next time we would really like to build on this. We all had such a lovely weekend sharing good food and good times with lots of local independents and local people. Everyone said it was really nice to experience a summery, unique day with a strong sense of community at the heart of it. Everyone really came together and businesses and cus tomers alike were offering out different things to each other.
About the charity: A joint initiative between rival Liverpool F.C. and Everton F.C. supporters, founded in 2015 to tackle food poverty in Liverpool. It provides a quarter of all food donations to north Liverpool food banks and has helped to develop a network of fan-driven food banks across the UK We have done a few similar festival type things before and they’ve gone really well, bringing the local community togeth er and showcasing what independent businesses here have to offer! We’re hoping to organise more in the future, the next one will be a harvest festival style event - showcasing out amazing local pumpkins of all shapes and sizes! We did this last year and it was a lot of fun with lots of collab orations between businesses, which is one of the highlights of this event. I’ve really enjoyed meeting different people / businesses and planning interesting ways to come together to create new exciting things for customers to enjoy

The shop at 132 Allerton Road has now been open for 35 years and is Doug’s last remaining shop. He works six days a week, getting up around 4am to get the produce fresh from Preston Market (Doug says he’s like a kid in a sweet shop and always buys too much…) before heading to the shop for the long task of re-stack ing the complex structure of fruit and veg displayed outside (harder than you’d Laterthink!).on he goes to Ray’s bakery a few doors down for a cup of tea, and often brings back treats for the staff. We hosted multiple businesses outside our shop and lots of other independents took part in the Italian themed festival down Allerton Road! - Italiallerton

20 installed in the grounds of Strawberry Field, Liverpool The Bandstand is being donated by Cliff Cooper, CEO of the world-famous Orange Amps When one thinks of Strawberry Field, John Lennon or the Beatles, it is music that comes to mind. For many that is what they also first associate with The Salvation Army. The team at Strawberry Field are therefore delighted work has begun on the installation of a uniquely designed bandstand in the grounds of Strawberry Field, where John Lennon played as a Whenchild.Honorary Patron of Strawberry Field, Cliff Cooper, CEO of Orange Amplifiers, learnt about plans to develop the Strawberry Field site as a training and work placement hub for young people with learning disabilities, he had an idea to donate and build a bandstand in the grounds.

After over a year of planning, the construction team have broken ground. Kathleen Versfeld, Mission Director at Straw berry Field said: “We are thrilled to have seen work begin on the long-await ed bandstand. We are looking forward to celebrity perfor mances, performances by our Step to Work students and of course by Salvation Army bands. We are very conscious of the fact that we are in a residential neighbourhood, so our plans include significant steps to avoid noise, crowding or other forms of disturbance. We want the bandstand to bring great joy to our local community as well as to our visitors from around the world”

Cliff “Onesaid:of John Lennon’s earliest musical experiences was hearing The Salvation Army band playing in the gardens of Strawberry Field. How appropriate is it now to reintroduce mense joy to visitors from around the world and will provide a performance space to help with the development of the students of the Strawberry Field training hub. I look forward to seeing the continuance of John’s legacy, promoting Peace and Love in the world, an ethos which reflects the selfless dedication of The Salvation Army, whose people devote their lives to helping others who are in need and less fortunate than ourselves.”

MORE THAN LOFT LADDERS Get more space at home for just £347+VAT We’d all like more room at home. But not everyone can a ord to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? In truth, that space is already there. It’s just not being used to its full potential. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes lled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the oorspace in an average home. So shouldn’t we be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton six years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making our lofts easily accessible. The latest MTLL franchise to open covers the Warrington area and is run by skilled local, Paul Langley, who says the company’s no-frills approach is what most people are looking for.
The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out charges. Paul provides a free guarantee on all parts and labour too.

For those of you who couldn’t attend - apologies but there is none left! Just the memories of the day. A huge “Thank You” to all my readers its with your encouragement and support helps me to continue producing these bi monthly magazines for Woolton.
Margaret
It has been a very exciting time for me this last 2 months actually reaching my L25 Woolton Times 100th edition. I’ve given lots to celebrate this event - discounts for all my customers on all their ads for July edition and rounding it up with free cake for all who attended the Woolton Farmers Market on Saturday 13th TheAugust.Lib
Dem team kindly invited me to do my cake celebration sharing their table at the Farmers Market where I had lots of helpers to distribute the cakes. It was a very hot day with temperatures in the 30’s and cakes starting to melt! so we had to work fast giving away initially the chocolate cake and then the vanilla one.
Don’t forget there are 2 other magazines I produce for both L18 Allerton and L15 & L16 Wavertree & Childwall so if you ever wish to see these just let me know as all are available, both in print and digital.

Good Market is a place for those who want to shop consciously, who waant to uplift their local creatives and spread good vibes whilst doing so. We began as the Brainchild of Good Liverpool, an online store that supported local businesses within the Liverpool City Region and beyond during the pandemic. The markets came as a reponse to our retailers wanting to get back out there, to immerse themselves in the community they had missed and begin selling face-to-face once more. Our success has surprised even us, with the response from our community being more than we could ever begin to fathom, and because of them, we continue to thrive.

Gateacre School
In the summer term, Gateacre School’s new tradition of a whole school production was back after a 3-year gap. After months of uncertainly we decided to ‘go for it’ and hope that by the time the performance week came around all restrictions would have eased, and luckily, they did, and it was as if we had rubbed the lamp and genie had made all our wishes come true!
Gateacre School
Instead of just the company being made up of students of Gateacre School, we invited 3 of our local primary schools to become our Agrabah choir as part of this year’s production of Disney’s Aladdin. In total over 200 students ranging from Year 3 to Year 12 were involved. It was wonderful for the Gateacre students to work with the primaries, and they formed a real bond with the younger students and making sure it would be an experience they would never forget. For the primary students it was great for them to experience being a part of a professional stage musical as well as be a part of a ‘normal’ day at Gateacre School.Weplayed to packed houses and rave reviews each night.
‘A huge, big thank you for all your hard work and efforts, that show certainly took some time and dedication from each and every one of you! What talented students you have.

‘I would like to thank all staff, Cast, Crew, and others who helped with the wonderful performance yesterday. I loved every minute of the “whole new world” you put on, giving me a wonderful end to my 25th birthday.’
Gateacre School’s production of Disney’s Aladdin… 3 years, 4 schools, 200 students, 1 flying carpet and 1 magic lamp!

White Little Lies are an Americana and close harmony duo consisting of Vanessa Murray and Daniel Salah. Chatting with Vanessa and Dan it is apparent that music for them is as much a calling as it is a creative process.

Has music always been a part of your lives? For Dan, from as early as he remembers, “music has been my best friend, my employer and in essence my life partner. It’s taken me down some amazing and varied roads”. What performance was your most memorable? Both replied, the EP launch show which took place at a sold out Studio Two in Liverpool. For Dan, the EP launch was something he’ll never forget as for him “our songs are like our musical children. It’s a creative bond and to share those songs in a sold out venue with the level of feedback and support we received, was something we will never forget.”
White Little Lies are currently working on an EP. There are appearing at ‘Keep The Music Going’ on 31st August at Pierre Griffes in Liverpool and can be found on Face book, Instagram and Twitter.
Vanessa said her songwriting adventure started at four teen when she joined an indie band before discovering the sounds of Sara Bareilles, Carole King and Joni Mitchell when she was sixteen. Similarly Dan, at the age of four teen started writing songs with a rock feel before moving into a more singer/songwriter style at the age of 18. Has their songwriting style changed over the years? Va nessa replied, “Definitely! Even before I pick up an instru ment my songwriting is planned out in advance striking a theme, the structure of the song and maybe even a title.”
Photo credit: Leigh & Lee Photography.
Dan says, “To write a song I meet with Vanessa, as she has an incredible ability to write simple yet incredibly well thought out melodies. I may approach songwriting from a very musical but yet complicated way.”
Beyond The Melody with White Little Lies.
“Music has been my best friend, my employer and in essence my life partner.”
Have any songwriter’s inspired you to pick up a guitar and start writing yourself? For Dan, writers such as “John Mayer, Brian May, Steve Lumather, Richie Sambora” but admits he could honestly go on. He draws particular attention to John Mayer stating “listening to Mayer’s album, ‘Continuum’ was a moment that I will never forget.” For Vanessa, ‘Lionhearted’ by Billie Marten, which went onto inspire the WLL song, ‘Parallel’. Vanessa was drawn to the way Marten mirrored the guitar with her vocal melody. Any advice to a potential songwriter? Dan replied, “Go with it. Don’t let anyone tell you to do anything you don’t feel connected to.” Vanessa too says, “Go with it! You can learn so much through songwriting and have a laugh and hopefully write a good song in the process too”

We’re also in regular contact with Merseyrail, about the installation of two brand new lifts at Hunts Cross Station. Along with the new trains, this will be a huge step towards making the station fully accessible. We’re really pleased to confirm that the work is on track to finish very soon. We’re planning another event which will include local crafters and traders and we’ve been supporting the fantastic charity Liverpool Zero Waste Community, who work to reduce food poverty and waste. Cllr Sharon Connor is a regular volunteer, assisting with food collection and delivery to community hubs on a weekly basis. We’re currently out every weekend with skips in different locations and are writing to residents in advance of coming to their roads. We’ve restarted our Big Spring Clean Up campaign in Hunts Cross and have been organising community litter picking events and delivering free litter pickers to residents. When we first started this initiative, we were inundated with requests from our neighbours, who were eager to get involved. If you ’d like a free litter picker, please contact Cllr Sharon Connor. We’ve worked with Hunts Cross Children’s Centre and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to deliver free, monthly books to local families, (over the years we’ve funded almost 1,500 free books through the scheme!). We’re continuing our regular walkabouts with our Police and Community Support Officers, and have recently joined them for a ‘bike marking’ event where bikes are marked to discourage thieves and so they can be traced back to owners. Most recently, we ’ve provided funding for free crime prevention devices for local residents, (including free bike locks, window and door alarms and sensor blockers to stop bank card and keyless car thefts).
