Hello and Welcome to my 95th Edition of L25Woolton Times for September 2021 Established over 18 Years!

Hope you are all well, safe & hopefully moving on with your lives and businesses as we knew it last March 2020.

We are all getting our businesses back on track after the Pandemic in ways that we feel will work. South Liverpool is always great with lots of ideas to support businesses reopening and promotions in the area. Please support our Farmers Market on the second Saturday of the month as they need your custom.

I would like to welcome all our new advertisers in this September L25 - there are many, my wishes go out to them- “Good Luck” with their current business ventures. Secondly I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our LOYAL businesses again for their tremendous support during this pandemic over the last 18 months supplying advertising or producing fantastic articles for all my magazines which we all enjoy reading.

We have had a lot going on since we last spoke in July –this obviously makes time flyby & I can’t believe it’s almost October.

I introduced “Margaret’s Market Place” in my L15&L16 in February which seems to be gaining popularity and last month introduced “Margaret Reviews” which I am delighted to share with you businesses I have tried & tested. This month I had the pleasure of testing a fabulous Beauty Range “Fresh Fox” by Faye who lives in Woolton, I had sampled her Hand & Body wash – Paradise Beach which reminded me of holidays which we have all missed- but you need to see her full range @www.Fresh-fox.com My second review was “The Liverpool Decorating Company” owned by Dave & John and what a highly experienced company they are & have advertised with me for a long time – the job completed on time - quote great- I couldn’t thank them enough and I would highly recommend them if you need a decorating job for both commercial & domestic work. As you all know tradesmen are very hard to come by during these post covid times – all very busy but The Liverpool Decorating Company came to my rescue and what an excellent job they did – I can honestly say I would recommend them for all your commercial & domestic work.

Woolton in Bloom They say ‘Time flies if you are enjoying yourself’…

Well I must have been enjoying myself a lot because I can’t believe it’s September already.

The start of Autumn and the end of the long, hot summer the weather forecasters promised us.

On a positive note our flowers are still blooming and should give us a good, colourful display until the end of the month.

Many of you have commented that the flowers were really beautiful, some so good that they were stolen! Well it wouldn’t be worth stealing if they were dying and bedraggled would it?

Woolton in Bloom is a charity and every plant is paid for with your generous support.

Even if it was funded by the Liverpool City Council we don’t plant them out to be stolen, only enjoyed by everyone in the village.

I’m very disappointed that the police failed to get our stolen tubs returned even though they were given the van registration number as the theft was underway.

Perhaps they think it is not important enough to investigate.

For us volunteers who give so much time planting and caring it is a personal assault.

Friends of Reynolds Park

We will have held our first post lockdown meeting by the time you read this. Over the summer months we have painted all the park gates and we continue to work for the good of Reynolds Park. We warmly invite you to our next meeting on Wednesday 10th November at 7pm in the Woolton Tesco Café.

BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPORT FOR WOOLTON FAMILIES September sees local schools open their doors for the new academic year, welcoming pupils back to the classroom. While this is an exciting time for many, for others the expense of new uniform and school supplies can be stressful. This has been especially worrying for families coming out of the pandemic already looking at tax rises and in some cases a cut to Universal Credit.

That’s why it was good to see Alice Bennett, who stood for council in Woolton as a Labour candidate in May, help families with her school uniform initiative, providing uniform that others no longer need to children at schools IN the area. This year Alice has supported families throughout Woolton, helping them to avoid what can often be an expense too far for already stretched finances.

I also want to thank local teachers and support staff for the work they’ve put in during what has been an unprecedented and trying period during COVID-19. The dedication they have shown to their pupils throughout Woolton has been tremendous, navigating in-school regulations, difficult exam periods and virtual learning to try and ensure no child was left behind. Thanks to them all.

HEALTH AND SOCIAL LEVY THAT DOESN’T CARE FOR LOCAL PEOPLE Parliament returned from summer recess on 6th September and there was little time to settle back in as the government broke 2019 manifesto promises and brought in tax rises. With a rise in National Insurance on earnings from 12% up to 13.25% - ten percent up on what is currently paid – working families throughout Woolton will be hit just as those families on Universal Credit lose £1,040 a year as the £20 a week uplift is cut.

This Health and Social Care Levy doesn’t even deliver what the Conservatives have promised, hitting working families twenty times harder than large companies paying dividends to shareholders The £86,000 cap won’t stop local people having to sell their homes to pay for care. That figure doesn’t include food or accommodation costs and will only help those who go into care after October 2023. If you have a loved one already in care then this cap will not apply to them. There is also no guarantee this will bring down NHS waiting lists, and no timetable for clearing the NHS backlog.

The cut to Universal Credit will impact 10,370 working age families throughout my Garston and Halewood constituency, 5,350 of which are families with children. Many of them can’t afford to lose this extra money, especially not just as we move into the winter months. It is often the difference between heating their house or feeding their kids.

For older residents the government have also broken their manifesto commitments on keeping triple lock on pensions, which they pledged to keep in place throughout the life of this Parliament but have now suspended.

There is real danger that this may become permanent, with charities who support pensioners highlighting their fears that the triple lock will disappear. With two million pensioners nationwide living in poverty already this would be disastrous for them.

Residents in Woolton are being asked to pay the price for the Conservative government’s broken promises and delays on social care reform. That’s why I voted against these damaging tax rises that will only hurt us locally.

Dear Resident, We hope you have all had a relaxing and enjoyable break this summer, which has certainly been in complete contrast to last summer when the restrictions were in place and we all found ourselves in periods of lockdown. What a difference 12 months have made. We must all however, continue to be cautious and follow the advice about keeping ourselves safe.

Following events late last year with scrambler bikes on Woolton Woods, we have continued to work on the measures that we promised to put in place to help prevent this activity from continuing. Over the past few weeks the fencing has been re-secured back into place at the front of A number of clean-up activities were organised by us over the summer, Woolton Youth Centre to prevent any vehicular access via the car park, which included the start-up again of our community skips. We had and the gates opposite Church Road South have now been secured parplanned for this to take place last year, but owing to Covid this had to tially closed that will hopefully make it more difficult for scrambler bikes be suddenly stopped. We were therefore able to place skips at various to get easy access, whilst allowing other park users and those with pushlocation at the beginning of August including Orient Drive, Druidsville chairs and wheelchairs continued access. We will then also be looking Road, Grange Lane and Church Road for local people to use to discard ahead to Halloween and bonfire night and the large scale anti-social beany unwanted items they had. This is a very popular scheme and we are haviour that occurs in the vicinity of Woolton Woods each year. We will hoping to repeat it at other locations within the ward in the near future. be meeting with Merseyside Police and City Watch to put arrangements in place and fund the closure of the gates leading onto Woolton Woods along High Street and at other locations during the evening and night time, and will report more about this nearer to the time.

We continue to be concerned about the future of Woolton Cinema and receive numerous enquiries about it. It is disappointing that following the on-line fundraising last year when a substantial amount of money was raised and given over to the owners, it remains closed at a time when the larger cinema complexes have now all mostly re-opened. So many local people had pledged their commitment to support the local Woolton Cinema and are now probably opting to travel to the larger ones to watch films. We will continue to reach out to the owners in an attempt to offer whatever support we can to try and keep this facility in Woolton.

Dare we say it, but now that summer is over and we move into autumn, we have already started to look at plans for Woolton Village to once again have its traditional Christmas Tree and light switch-on, but hopefully this year with something extra. We will keep local people informed as we progress with the plans.

We also set about to repair and repaint the benches in Woolton Village over the summer, and Cllr Malcolm Kelly was seen on a number of occasions carrying this work out, which has made a vast improvement to the appearance of that part of the Village. We are hoping to organise another Village clean-up day soon and perhaps concentrate some volunteers on the lodes pond car park.

During the week of 18th September we helped organise activities and took part in ‘The Great Big Green Week’ here in Woolton. Working in conjunction with Strawberry Fields, Friends of Reynolds Park, Parish of St Mary Woolton, and other organisations, there were a variety of activities to learn about climate change, re-cycles workshop, interfaith prayer gathering and family nature trail. We supported all of this with our own stall on Woolton Woods to give an opportunity to talk to us about green and environmental issues. The whole week was a great success.

Dear resident, I hope you are keeping safe and had a lovely summer catching up with friends and family, whether you were lucky enough to get abroad for a holiday or had a staycation instead.

COMMUNITY EVENTS IN ALLERTON AND HUNTS CROSS This Summer I have funded a number of events in our area. One was a Community BBQ organised by St Hilda’s Church on Speke Road. This was in honour of our local heroes who do so much good work for the benefit of others in our community. The joy and pleasure that these people bring to little ones, families and the elderly is invaluable and I want to thank them all for their selfless work to enrich the lives of others. It was also great to see many local residents enjoying this lovely event. A big thank you to St Hilda’s Church.

MICKEY & MINNIE MOUSE IN HUNTS CROSS Another event I helped fund was the fabulous Community BBQ which took place at the Hunts Community Garden, organised by the Friends of Hunts Cross. The event was really enjoyed by all, especially the children, as there was plenty of entertainment on offer, from face painting, balloon making, magic show and special guests Mickey and Minnie Mouse who danced and sang with the kids and the adults.

LOCAL SUMMER FAIR HELD AT CLARKE GARDENS I This summer I organised a successful local Summer fair at Clarke Gardens. The stalls were paid for from Neighbourhood Funding and provided free to traders to boost our local economy. The traders bought along for sale wonderful sustainable products such as crystal jewellery and healing crystals and all things mystical by Navajo Dreams; ethical baby and children’s goods from Big You Little, who also provide an alternative family and holistic service; exquisite fashion from Sparkles Boutique Studios; beautiful artwork from local artist Tom Donohue; delicious handmade cakes perfect for any occasion from Lily Cake; artist and award winning photographer Rena Pearl; wreaths and flowers from Katie Doran-Grant; local author Paul McDermott; quality handmade soaps and fragrances for the body and home from Fresh Fox; homewares and jewellery from Lara’s Resin Workshop; and soft furnishings from Viks Pillows. Local musician Simon Cousins also played his music adding to a great atmosphere in our great outdoors.

GIANT POT HOLES AT CLARKE GARDENS I have reported giant dangerous potholes on the road entrance to Clarke Gardens to Liverpool City Council.

I have been informed that this is an unadopted road but it is still the responsibility of the council to repair them. I have spoken to the Parks Manager who informs me that they are waiting for a budget to be released to carry out the repairs.

THE WOOLTON SOCIETY Circumstances beyond our control led the Woolton Society committee to take the decision to cancel the talk planned for the evening of 15th September. The health & welfare of members is always at the forefront of all decisions so it has been decided to delay the start of the Autumn programme of talks until October, when it is hoped that the season will begin with all necessary precautions in place.

The first talk is planned for the afternoon of Thursday 21st October at St Mary’s hall on Church Road, starting at 3pm. The speaker will the West Derby society’s Stephen Guy, who will have as his topic Forgotten Liverpool, including the Royal Liverpool Babies’ hospital in Woolton Park, plus other items of interest about Woolton.

The hall will be open from 2.30pm, with the archdiocese stipulating several conditions for its use. The hall will be well ventilated, chairs will be widely spaced, sanitisers will be available at the door & attendees will be asked to provide contact details upon entering. Members & visitors are asked not to attend if feeling unwell, with a temperature or a cough. The talk will start promptly at 3pm with the doors closed & late comers not admitted. No refreshments will be provided.

The 48th AGM, held two years after the 47th, is planned for Wednesday 17th November at 7.30pm. It is hoped that there will be a good attendance of members as one item on the agenda will be the society’s 50th anniversary in October 2022. New committee members would be welcomed, please see any of the current committee at the talk in October or at the market stall on the second Saturday of each month.

Members will be receiving the Autumn newsletter in October, with details of the AGM & a preview of the programme of talks for 2022.

Abbot’s Lea investing in the education, care and futures of students

Abbot’s Lea School is continuing to invest in the education, care and futures of its students after appointing over 25 employees for the new academic year.

These include two teachers, four HLTAs (higher level teaching assistants) and thirteen TAs (teaching assistants). The facilities team and school business support team have also welcomed new members of staff.

Joining the Woolton-based school is speech and language therapist, Liz Smith. Liz will be part of the dedicated multi-disciplinary team and brings with her a wealth of knowledge from working in other schools and her own practice.

Working within the care and safeguarding team will be family adviser, Richard Manley. Richard has over 10 years’ experience in schools in a range of safeguarding and pastoral roles and is looking forward to meeting and working closely with Abbot’s Lea families.

In addition, the specialist school has employed two apprentices.

These roles have been specifically created in areas that will become more important to the school in the near future. Anna Robertson fills the position of horticulture apprentice and will work within the facilities team, managed by Ian Westall - the school’s new facilities manager.

Robert Daly has been appointed IT apprentice and will offer support to the school’s extensive IT system. Both Anna and Robert will complete a programme of study and professional

qualifications alongside their apprenticeships.

Fulfilling the role of data analyst is Piers Henners. Piers has recently completed an MSc in data science and will be responsible for analysing key information in order for the school to make informed decisions for the benefit of its students.

Alongside the appointments, there has been three internal promotions. Laura Gibney has been promoted from teacher to KS2 leader, whilst Alice Laird and Rebecca Ledward have progressed from higher level teaching assistants to teachers.

I am a private music tutor, specialising in piano, singing, GCSE and A Level Music, Music Theory, Composition, audition practice, performance practice, and Secondary School entrance Music Aptitude Test coaching. I teach in person at my home in Woolton or online through Zoom.

I studied music at Cardiff University for 4 years with Martin Jones and Professor Robin Stowell, achieving a BMus (Hons) and MA in Piano Performance. I have 31 years’ teaching experience, 25 of those years as Head of Music, including 15 years as the Director of Music at Merchant Taylors’ Girls’ School, Crosby, Liverpool from 2000 to 2015.

I am a Teacher, Composer, Arranger, Accompanist and Conductor. Qualifications include MA in Performance; BMus (Hons); PGCE; ALCM Diploma I like to arrange regular student concerts at venues such as St Nick’s Church in Liverpool, giving students an opportunity to perform in public. Before the Covid Pandemic I was organising termly student concerts.

Our next student concert will hopefully be in November at St Nick’s Church.

I prepare students for exams using ABRSM and Trinity exam boards. I feel that taking music exams is the best way to ensure and monitor progress, although I also have students who play or sing purely for pleasure. I encourage students to take exams, especially the higher grades, as grades 6 and above in both practical and theory award UCAS points for University entry. For singing grades, I encourage students to take grade 8 in ABRSM Singing, ABRSM Singing for Music Theatre and Trinity Pop Vocals, all awarding UCAS points.

I have taught all ages, from the challenges of a 2 year old to retired adults wishing to take up a new hobby. I teach beginners to Diploma and beyond. All students are encouraged to perform in my student concerts.

As the Director of Music at Merchant Taylors’ Girls’ School I organised and led 5 European Music Tours (Belgium 2010, Holland 2012, Belgium 2013, Italy 2014, France and Belgium 2015), conducting choral concerts in prestigious venues: Notre Dame (13th July 2015), St Mark’s Basilica (2014), the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres (2010, 2013 and 2015). I set up and ran a Saturday Morning Music School, Crescendo, for 5 years.

WALL OF SOUND COMMUNITY CHOIR Wall of Sound Community Choir is looking to build and reconnect the local community through song.No matter your age, ability or experience, there is a place for you here.

In a fun, friendly environment based within the Music Department of Gateacre School in Belle Vale you can explore the joys of singing with a group of like-minded people.

FRANKIE’S PAINT-IT POTTERY

How time flies? - Frankie’s Paint-it Pottery will be 2 on Sunday 26th September!

What an unexpected 2 years it has been. I remember when we first opened, I spoke to another local independent business nearby and he said to me “the first 2 years will be the hardest.” I don’t think he was referring to the imminent global pandemic and the rollercoaster of ups, down and mixed emotions that came with that. During our first 18 months we were closed for almost half of it, how strange for a new business?

At the start of the pandemic lots of people bought take out kits to paint at home and keep the children busy for what some people envisaged might be “a few weeks.”

Thankfully we are still here and hopefully will be for years to come. We have welcomed back many of our old customers, and many new ones too. We have seen the students coming in to paint something memorable as they graduate (many without graduation ceremonies), many of them who have been in the city for years studying and moving on to their new careers, we wish them luck with that. We have had lots of adorable lockdown babies in to make memories such as painted hand and footprints on pottery and also clay imprint keepsakes. If the pandemic has taught us anything it is that life is short and spending time with family and friends making precious memories is important. We can now have Birthday Parties, Hen Parties, Baby showers, Paint and Prosecco and BYOB evenings. It is so good to have people relaxing in the studio again and just enjoying some “down time” painting pottery.

The pandemic slowed down the plans I had for Frankie’s to grow and develop but we are now starting to put those in place again. I say we because Damon joined the business in the months before the pandemic started and he has been an essential member of the team since then. We are hoping to introduce new activities this autumn such as Mini Potters Clay workshops as well as Adult Clay Workshops which will all focus on hand building techniques such as slab building and using coils to make pot. Upcoming Information will appear on our events page on our website.

If you have never been to Frankie’s, then now is the time to try it with the seasons changing, and special times of year ahead of us. We have had many people in who say, “I’m not very arty” and then they leave feeling so pleased with what they have achieved. We have so many underglazes and tools to help you produce that beautiful unique piece and we are always keen to share our tips on how to use everything from the glazes to the individually designed laser cut sponges, everyone can produce something special to keep or give as a gift.

One last thing to say is that we do take walk ins but we now take bookings also, so to avoid disappointment, we suggest booking ahead as people spend a couple of hours with us!

A Message from your Labour Councillors Dear Residents, Coronavirus is still circulating in our communities. If you have a fever, cough or a loss or change in smell or taste, please do get tested and follow any guidance given about self-isolating.

The vaccine programme is continuing its rollout to even more people in the community. Here in Liverpool vaccinations are being offered to all those aged 18 and over, as well as those aged 16-64 in an at-risk group. If you are currently eligible to receive a vaccination you are able to make an appointment by calling 119 or by visiting here: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/ coronavirus-vaccination/book-coronavirus-vaccination/ Although the Coronavirus is still at the forefront of our minds, we wanted to tell you a bit more about some of the work we’re doing in our community. As your representatives, we’ve secured record levels of road investment for the area, with over £6 million of local road resurfacing work either completed or due to take place — and we’re actively lobbying for the work to start on roads such as Speke Road, Hunts Cross Avenue and Manor Road. Our hugely popular, and free community skip scheme continues, (introduced by Labour and since 2019 alone, we’ve provided more than 150 free skips!) — and we’ve also been out delivering free litter pickers to businesses and individuals, encouraging everyone to get involved in the Great British Spring Clean.

Recently, we’ve worked with Hunts Cross Children’s Centre and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to deliver free, monthly books to local families, (over the years we’ve funded almost 1,000 free books through the scheme!). We’ve met with Merseyside Police and Mersey Fire and Rescue Service on Camp Hill, to discuss how we can tackle anti social behaviour. We’ve worked with Torus and local artist Alan Murray to fund the restoration of the much loved, ‘Union the Penguin’ sculpture in Hunts Cross. We’ve also been back out to visit the Bellway Estate with Merseyside Police and the management company, to discuss how we can work together to improve the estate for residents — and we’ve paid visits to both All Souls Church in Allerton, to see how they’ve made use of funding we secured for youth activities and green initiatives, and to Merseyside Youth Challenge Trust to support their fantastic work with young people in Allerton Towers.

We’ve been busy working in partnership with the Labour Team in Cressington, and the organisation ‘Scouse FlowerHouse’, on plans to introduce Wildflower Meadows across the area. Initial meetings have taken place, a number of locations have been identified, and we’ll be keeping you updated as the plans develop.

You might also remember that prior to the pandemic, we introduced some popular Hunts Cross Craft Fair events. We’re delighted to announce another event in St. Columba’s URC Church Hall, on Saturday 23rd October from 9.30am to 1.30pm. Please contact us if you are interested in booking a stall, as there may still be space available.

Lastly, work is continuing on the installation of two brand new lifts at Hunts Cross Rail Station. We’re so pleased that Merseytravel has listened to calls, and this investment will be huge step towards making the station fully accessible.

WOW (Women of Woolton) Women’s Institute is part of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes. Our monthly meetings cover crafts, campaigns and issues of the day as well as providing a forum for an active and friendly social life.

We have now resumed our Monthly Members meeting in reality at Woolton Golf Club on Tuesday 7th September with a guest speaker Mel Lathom demonstrating chutney making with a sale of her products afterwards. We have introduced small controlled groups at the Simpson ground for crafts such as stencilling, Macramé making and Woolton Youth Club for our Friday sewing group.

Our usual monthly meetings for Craft & Natter/Book Club /Quiz Night/ Art Club/ are all back on the agenda and also an interesting Rope works walk planned in October and even a theatre trip in the New Year2022.

Our speakers programme is now complete for the remainder of the year which includes a wide range of varied excellent speakers from Mel’s Chutney & Jam Maker/Faye the Cheese Maker and My Mad Life

FRESH FOX BY FAYE Faye is the owner & director of Fresh Foxcreating high quality products such as hand & body washes, soaps including whipped soap, reed diffusers, wax melts, candles and many more.

Faye started her business in 2019 and it had been her passion to create the business for a number of years.

It was always a running joke with friends and family that she loved smelling things from perfumes and bubble baths to every fabric softener in the supermarket laundry aisle – what can she say – beautiful scents make her happy!!

Initially Faye started producing soaps for herself and family and friends as a hobby because she wanted to do something she enjoyed in her downtime from working in the legal sector. It has now grown into a family business and is currently stocked in five retail spaces around the Merseyside area.

BEECHLEY STABLES

Summer is nearly over; the children have returned to school, and here at Beechley Stables we are returning to business-as-usual post Covid.

It’s been a long time but now we are ready to get more of our riders getting back in the saddle, from the feedback received so far its been well worth the wait and it’s great to hear the laughter echoing around the arena as they have fun whilst playing games during the lessons.

We have held several coffee sessions, afternoon teas, Dementia Coffee mornings: storytelling for children, allowing the Local Community to get to meet and pat the ponies speak to the team about future events and plans.

Once again, a huge thank you to everyone attending the events and to all those who continue to support us and help in making a positive difference to the lives of those around us.

On Wednesday 25 August we took delivery of this amazing piece of architectural history.

Kindly donated to us by the Oldham family, in memory of their sister, LIz Oldham-Ngyuen who passed away on 7th January.

The piece crafted in nearby Hale is made using Bellows from the industrial revolution to form the sides had been saved and kept in the scrapyard of Liz’s family business where she worked in all her life. The Bellows original created by Linley & Bingham of Sheffield would have been used making the horseshoes as far back as 1899 when the company was founded. Liz known to many in the Merseyside area “as a supporting rod of steel” to her family, shared her passion for horses by teaching and running the Simmonswood Horse Shows. Many a local youngster had the privilege to win rosettes in lead reign events after coaching by Liz.We feel privileged and grateful to the Oldham Family for allowing us and everyone who visits Beechley the opportunity to sit, pause and reflect on life, whilst sitting on this bench with a view of both the yard and the arena.

We have several events lined up for the coming months including another Alpaca visit in half term.
