Woolton in Bloom Late spring is always a gorgeous time to enjoy.

The emerging leaves with so many shades of green and the efforts of autumn planting showing all their magnificent colours. We have been treated to, snowdrops, crocus, primulas, daffodils and the beautiful blue forget me nots, and of course I am proud of all the tulips which have provided a splash of colour in lots of different places around the village. When I said the volunteers had planted over two thousand bulbs their hard work has shown in pots and planters around the village, especially on Kings Drive where some were planted in the crown and in the flower bed by the dairy wall and some in the grass by the traffic lights.

The other main areas were High Street planters and in Lodes Pond car park.

I thought 2000 + bulbs would be spectacular but now I’m thinking we could do with more for next year!! If anyone would like to donate any bulbs or perhaps finance a few hundred it would be great.

We will shortly be preparing for our summer planting which hopefully will be as spectacular as last year.

THE NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME - WOOLTON The National Garden Scheme has a rich and interesting history – with humble beginnings in the early 1900s when we first started supporting district nurses, to donating millions of pounds to nursing and health charities over 90 years later.

Thanks to the generosity of garden owners, volunteers and visitors we have donated over £63 million to nursing and health charities and made an annual donation of over £3 million in 2021. Our core beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute. The National Garden Scheme doesn’t just open beautiful gardens for charity – we are passionate about the physical and mental health benefits of gardens too. We also support charities doing amazing work in gardens and health and grant bursaries to help community gardening projects. Dear Resident, We recently wrote about Boundary Commission plans to change the boundaries of the wards throughout Liverpool. Proposals show that the current Woolton Ward will be split into four different areas and will become known as Woolton Park Ward, Much Woolton & Hunts Cross Ward, Menlove Ward and Gateacre Ward. Our local Councillors have awarded us a grant and we will use it to place a new tree outside the Walled Garden in the Autumn.

This will replace a tree removed a few years ago because of a fungal disease. We have applied again for funding to renovate the wild flower meadow and also for funding to complete the complete play area circuit.

The walled Garden will be part of the Woolton Open Gardens on Sunday July 3rd between noon and 5pm. This event raises funds for Woolton in Bloom. Please support this delightful event. Reynolds Day in the park will take place on Saturday September 10th- more details in the next issue. The next Friends meeting will be in Woolton Tesco Cafe at 7pm on Wednesday14th September at 7pm.

Councillor Mirna Juarez Woolton Hunts Cross Ward Liberal Democrats

Dear Residents - I hope you are keeping safe and well.

NEW GREEN BIN CHARGE At the annual city council budget meeting, the ruling Labour administration voted to implement an annual charge of £40 to our green bin collection service. I represent a ward where nearly every home has a garden and will be affected.

This charge will also have an effect on our environment as there will be more fly-tipping and residents could be tempted to put their green garden waste in their purple bin, adding more waste and landfill costs for the council taxpayer.

I have been inundated by residents complaining that they had not been properly informed about this new charge.

They were confused about it because they had never been charged before for green waste. Some were very frustrated because they could not get through to the council to pay for the service over the telephone as many still do not feel comfortable making payments on line.

Many residents were concerned about whether their bin would be collected as they had still not received the stickers which have to be placed on the bin to indicate to waste collectors that the household had paid for the service.

We had many residents demanding a refund from the council as they had paid their council tax up to April 1st and they were still entitled to two more collections till the paid-for service kicked in. After Liberal Democrats complained on behalf of residents, the council was forced to honour the collections.

I believe that this chaos would have been avoided had the council allowed more time for people switch over to the opt-in service. In a survey, 42% of residents told us that they will put their garden waste in the purple bin. This is just the wrong time to introduce this charge as many people are struggling with rising household bills and food prices. We already pay quite high council tax in this city compared to other local authorities it is not fair that we are asked to fork out all the time. Especially when we have such a wasteful council that has squandered £136m due to incompetence and corruption.

BOUNDARY REVIEW FOR HUNTS CROSS & WOOLTON The map of Liverpool’s city council wards is set for big changes following proposals from the Boundary Commission.

Allerton and Hunts Cross, the ward I represent, is to be renamed Much Woolton and Hunts Cross with parts of the old ward around Menlove Avenue and Mather Avenue disappearing to be replaced by an area close to Woolton Village.

The Boundary Commission is asking local people and organisations to comment on their draft recommendations for these new ward boundaries. They welcome further suggestions from local people and you can view and comment on the proposals via this link https://consultation.lgbce.org.uk/ This stage of the consultation closes on 8 June 2022.

NEW PICNIC BENCHES I am delighted to report back that two picnic benches have now been installed in the Hunts Cross community garden for everyone use and to enjoy. These were paid for out of my allocation of neighbourhood funding.

There are walks to suit everyone and all abilities.

We have A grade, B grade and C grade walks, and are a small and friendly group looking to expand our membership.

New members are always welcome. Our typical programme of walks each year takes us to the Lake District, North Wales, the Peak District, South Lancashire, Shropshire, Cheshire, West Yorkshire and beyond. We usually meet around 8am or just after on a walking Sunday and return early evening.

Carmelo and Kristiina opened their first Buongiorno Deli nearly a year ago in Penny Lane.

After having so much support from the local community the opportunity came to expand and Woolton Village was the next perfect place. The idea is to create a space where there’s no rush, always friendly conversation and a shop full of simple quality Italian products. It is a convenience store with a space to enjoy a glass of wine, Aperol Spritz and have a freshly prepared cheese and meat platter. All prepared with products that you can also buy from the store. For lunch there are plenty of soft drinks to choose from alongside with freshly made sandwiches.

CALDERSTONES SWIMMING ACADEMY @ CALDERSTONES SCHOOL We established ourselves as a freestanding swimming academy in September 2021 and have grown really quickly in 9 months. Our focus is delivering affordable swimming lessons to our local community and beyond. We understand the importance of swimming as a critical life skill and clearly the educational aspect of sport ties in with what we also promote as a school. All profits generated through the swimming academy are recycled back within Calderstones School, which allows us to invest and further enhance the education and opportunities available to Calderstones students. We run a variety of lessons from children’s non-swimmer lessons right through to adult only provision. We are always open to suggestions and feedback and ambitious to further diversify wherever possible.

It is extremely rewarding for us to see the development of our swimmers, some of whom have previously been too anxious to even enter the water, but often within weeks have overcome their fears and built solid and long-lasting confidence and relationships with our instructors. We are not just about teaching people to swim however and believe in our ability to continuously improve swimmers through our tightly monitored progression programme. We also offer the Swim England programme for swimmers wishing to follow this pathway. Our classes are run with sensible numbers in them to ensure that all customers get the time and dedication they deserve to meet their own individual goals. We recognise not everybody learns and develops at the same pace which is why we have chosen the team we have. Our instructors have broad knowledge of swimming methods over many years and are they are happy to adjust and react accordingly to allow all to progress in their own time.

Calderstones Swimming Academy may be relatively new in name, but we believe we are as good a swim facility as anywhere else out there and by recruiting the experienced instructors we have we’re confident that if you join us, you’ll be glad you did.

We’d love you to come and give us a try so you can see for yourself the passion we have for teaching, developing and progressing our swimmers in a happy and positive environment.

Our lessons are released in cohorts which usually last for 6 weeks in line with the school term. Lessons sell quickly and are prioritised for existing customers but we will always try and accommodate new swimmers at our facility wherever possible.

A big thank you from Marie Curie to the people of Liverpool The end-of-life charity Marie Curie had its annual Great Daffodil Appeal boosted thanks to the tremendous support of people across Liverpool last month.

The charity’s fundraising appeal which is held every March, calls on people to donate and wear one of the charity’s iconic daffodil pins to help fund vital care and support for people living with a terminal illness.

To mark the launch of this year’s appeal, Marie Curie created a daffodil artwork made of 4,129 LED tea lights – representing the number of people Marie Curie looked after across its nine hospices and in private homes per month last year.

Collections held in at Morrisons Belle Vale & Speke across the first 3 weekends in March raised over £8210 and collections in ASDA Hunts Cross on 25th/26th March raised over £1375 with all funds going towards enabling Marie Curie to care for more people living with a terminal illness, and their families.

Ruth Todd, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser in Liverpool said: “We were forced to cancel our public collections for the past two years due to the pandemic so we are even more grateful for the amazing support from shoppers and volunteers at Morrisons Belle Vale & Speke and ASDA Hunts Cross this year. Their generosity means we raised a fantastic amount for this year’s Great Daffodil Appeal. Too many people don’t get the care and support they need at the end of their lives, but together we can change that.”

MAN-EATING PLANT-BASED MUSICAL A BLOOMING SUCCESS! Blue Coat scored a first with its post-pandemic come-back annual School Show starring a man-eating plant, with a result that was hilarious, hugely entertaining and highly appreciated by the audiences.

The rocky poppy musical The Little Shop of Horrors got the School Show back on track after an absence of nearly two years, and was well up to standard of previous smash hits like Legally Blonde and The Addams Family.

The extra time gained by postponing the show by two months until 1-7 April because of the pandemic gave the outstanding cast the chance to fine tune the production and it showed.

The cast acted, danced and sang with great verve and energy as the body count rose, led by Lucas, Lower Sixth Form, and Alexandra, Year 11, as the beguiling shop assistants Seymour and Audrey. Ed and Ehi, both Year 11, gave excellent support as evil dentist Orin and desperate shop owner Mr Mushnik. Not forgetting Dylan, Lower Sixth Form, dominating proceedings as the stage-shaking voice of carnivorous plant Audrey II. As this singular horror-comedy unfurled, The Ronettes provided a running choral commentary displaying impressive complex close harmonies, coached by vocal director Louise, Lower Sixth Form.

Choreographers Annie and Gracie, both Lower Sixth Form, and their troupe excelled themselves, not least by devising a very funny tango for Seymour and Mr Mushnik, backed by flamenco dancers.

This must be the only musical in which all the leading characters are eaten by a huge gluttonous plant, but they all died beautifully with plenty of flailing limbs and tuneful screams of terror while being chomped up.

The show band, especially assembled for the production, co-conducted by Anna and Matthew, both Upper Sixth Form,

with George, Year 11, as lead pianist, played with great aplomb and exquisite timing to match the comic action.

Finally, co-directors Neve and Hannah, both Lower Sixth, deserve big applause for pulling the entire show together, and creating a big success in spite of missing the experience from working on a show last year.

Also, thanks are due to the technical crew, the plant-eating Audrey II puppeteers for their hard work, and the behindthe-scenes guiding light-touch of teachers Mr Emery, Miss Lowsley, Miss Horton and Mr Kershaw.

A Message from your Labour Councillors Dear Residents, It’s important to note we’re still seeing coronavirus hospitalisations, and unfortunately deaths in the region. We wanted to tell you a bit more about some of the work we’re doing in our community. As your representatives, we’ve secured record levels of road investment for the area, with over £6 million of local road resurfacing work either completed or due to take place — and we’re actively lobbying for the work to start on roads such as Speke Road, Hunts Cross Avenue and Manor Road. Our hugely popular, and free community skip scheme has restarted, (introduced by Labour and since 2019 alone, we’ve provided more than 150 free skips!). We’re currently out every weekend with skips in different locations and are writing to residents in advance of coming to their roads.

We’ve restarted our Big Spring Clean Up campaign in Hunts Cross and have been organising community litter picking events and delivering free litter pickers to residents. When we first started this initiative, we were inundated with requests from our neighbours, who were eager to get involved. If you’d like a free litter picker, please contact Cllr Sharon Connor.

We’ve worked with Hunts Cross Children’s Centre and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to deliver free, monthly books to local families, (over the years we’ve funded more than 1,400 free books through the scheme!). We’re also supporting Hunts Cross Primary School with funding, so they can provide even more opportunities for children with special educational needs to thrive.

We’ve continuing our regular walkabouts with our Police and Community Support Officers in Hunts Cross, and have been out discussing everything from antisocial behaviour to parking enforcement. If you see us on one of our walkabouts, please don’t hesitate to stop us and have a chat. We’re also in regular contact with Merseyrail, about the installation of two brand new lifts at Hunts Cross Station. Along with the new trains, this will be a huge step towards making the station fully accessible. We’re really pleased to confirm that the work is on track to finish very soon.

We’re speaking with our Labour Team in Cressington, and the organisation ‘Scouse FlowerHouse’, about plans to introduce Wildflower Meadows across the area, we’re planning another event which will include local crafters and traders — and we’ve been supporting the fantastic charity Liverpool Zero Waste Community, who work to reduce food poverty and waste. Cllr Sharon Connor is a regular volunteer, assisting with food collection and delivery to community hubs on a weekly basis. If you’re interested in lending a hand, contact the team today via their Facebook page.

Lastly, we’ve been chatting to the Team at the Cheshire Lines Club, about their fantastic fundraising efforts, and will be making a donation towards the costs of a defibrillator. They’ve done so well and we’re looking forward to when this life-saving piece of kit is introduced on site.

ARE YOU A RUBBISH FRIEND? Following successful community clean-up days last year, 2022 sees the launch of Rubbish Friends of Woolton. A group for anyone who wants to help keep our area clean and tidy and enjoys the company of others.

We’ll be meeting on the last Saturday of every month during 2022.

Every time from 11am by the entrance of Lodes Pond.

Families welcome (children should be accompanied by an adult).

Gloves, bags, grippers and other material will be available but the more you can bring yourself the better!

Free tea and coffee for all volunteers from a nearby cafe.

THE WOOLTON SOCIETY This is an exciting year for the Woolton Society, with many events planned to celebrate our fiftieth anniversary.

The society can now add four new heritage plaques to its list, as listed buildings consent was granted very recently to install a plaque on the old school house in School Lane. This building dates from 1610, & is the oldest elementary school in Merseyside, serving the local parish until 1819. The building had been a private dwelling house & is now in use as nursery school.

The plaques have been made by Photocast in Speke, a nationally renowned company. The three plaques commissioned earlier this year will be installed on the old courthouse in Quarry Street, the former home of Woolton Society founder Janet Gnosspelius on Hightor Road, & on Woolton House Medical Centre to commemorate Dr Carl Warner, GP & holder of the Military Cross. All four plaques are to be installed by Photocast on the same day, with official unveiling ceremonies at a later date. This will bring the total of heritage plaques to seven, with a pamphlet giving details of them all, plus a map showing their locations, available later in the year.

The society has now returned to holding the monthly talks programme in St Mary’s hall, with three very successful meetings held so far this year. February saw Dr Janet Hollinshead & Blue Badge guide Marie Passey speaking on the history of Woolton’s High

Street. In March Elaine Allen, also a Blue Badge guide, gave a very amusing talk on the history of the telephone box, while April saw David Hearn speaking entertainingly on the first Mersey tunnel.

The speaker on May 18th will be Mike Chitty who will have as his subject the garden suburb story. Full details of all the talks & events for the remainder of 2022 are in the newsletter sent out to all society members.

In June & July free events are offered to all members, the first being a coach tour to Crosby beach to see the installation Another Place, also known as The Iron Men. This is to be on Sunday 26th June. On Sunday 10th July there will be a guided walk around the city centre’s nooks & crannies. Both events will be led by Marie Passey, who will be providing a commentary on Liverpool’s waterfront on the coach tour. The walk is fully booked, with a waiting list, but there are still some places left on the coach trip.

Members wishing to sign up should contact the society at any meeting, at the market stall on the second Saturday of each month or via the website.

WOW (Women of Woolton) Women’s Institute is part of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes. Our monthly meetings cover crafts, campaigns and issues of the day as well as providing a forum for an active and friendly social life.

We are so happy to have resumed our Monthly Members meeting in reality at Woolton Golf Club which has a beautiful function suite & accommodates our 100 members comfortably. The last 12 months have been very interesting yet challenging. We have continued to enjoy what we could do and not worry about what we couldn’t do.

At our April & May meetings our speakers were both tremendous.

Firstly with Alistair Jackson telling us all about “Recycling Lives” the history of his company initially -scrap metal to the present day accommodating the homeless and employing prisoners within their business working whilst still in prison to help stop them reoffending and getting their lives back on track when they are released.

Secondly Gary Green from Blood Bikes telling us all about voluntary work with The Blood Bikes and how they are known and the “Unknown Emergency Service” both were excellent and members enjoyed their talks immensely.

We now have small controlled groups at the Simpson ground for crafts such as stencilling, Macramé, card making, pottery painting, and many more & continue with groups for reading, board games, walking, quizzes, art & ukulele tuition.

We hope to introduce a supper club, cinema trips and have 2 trips booked aboard the floating grace on the Mersey with afternoon tea and a trip to Browesholme Hall in Clitheroe.

In the meantime we will be celebrating the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth 11 with an Afternoon tea arranged in Reynolds Park.

Our speakers programme is now complete for the year of 2022 with a wide range of varied excellent speakers for us all to enjoy.
