Hello and Welcome to my Ninety Eighth edition of L25Woolton Times magazine for March Established over 19 Years!

Hope you are all well & safe and hopefully moving on with our lives and businesses as we knew it before the pandemic.

We are getting all our businesses back on track in ways that we feel will work. South Liverpool is always great with lots of ideas to support businesses reopening and promotions in the area.

We work alongside the Rubbish of Woolton volunteers litter picking around Lodes Pond on the last Saturday of each month. We always comment to each other about the amount of money that is simply thrown away, not cash unfortunately which we would happily accept, but bottles of fizzy drinks, beer bottles and glasses that have been taken out of bars. The drinks are nearly always more than half full and simply tossed away or the glasses are left in the planters.

L25 WOOLTON TIMES Dear Resident,

We continue to receive complaints about parking problems in Woolton Village. We have raised this with Parking Services who recently carried out a week long exercise to enforce parking during the early evenings along Allerton Road and on the paved area by the three lamps. We joined parking attendants during one of the evenings when a number of cars were ticketed for parking illegally and this seemed to stop most of the motorists from parking on the yellow lines along Allerton Road whilst they were there, but no sooner had parking attendants left the area, motorists began to park illegally again. Clearly more needs to be done to deal with this long term and we have already been working with Woolton in Bloom by funding a large planter for them to place by the three lamps to stop cars from mounting the pavement at that location in the future. We will continue to ask Parking Services to enforce the illegal parking in the Village, but more needs to be done. The council’s Highways Department needs to properly consider the consequences of supporting future planning applications for restaurants, wine bars and fast food businesses in the Village, which seem to attract illegal parking and often brings the Village to a gridlock. We will be discussing this further with Highways, but it is also important for us all to consider carefully where we park in the Village so we do not cause these problems.

As a reminder, any member of the public can report pavement parking that is causing an obstruction to Merseyside Police by taking a photograph of the offending vehicle with registration details and e-mailing to pavement.parking@merseyside.police.uk along with the date and time of the offence. The police will then make contact with the owner of the vehicle.

Yet another serious collision occurred at the busy traffic light junction of Allerton Road and Hillfoot Road earlier in the month with several cars involved. It is clear that the traffic signals need a filter phase to help motorists make a turn safely and we have already raised this with Highways, which we are sorry to say has not generated any action from the council. We are raising this issue again with them and hopefully this further incident will now cause them to take action and improve the safety at this junction.

We have recently objected to a planning application to erect a 5G telecommunications mast at the top of Blackwood Avenue at the junction with Woolton Hill Road. This is a very busy and dangerous junction and so not only will this additional structure and associated cabinets cause an obstruction to sight lines; it will also have a detrimental effect to the visual amenity of this area, which sits on the edge of the Woolton Village Conservation area. Whilst there

is the need and demand for more advanced technology, we feel that these telecommunication companies have a responsibility to consider much better where these masts can be placed and not just put in places that are most convenient to them.

The newly formed ‘Rubbish Friends of Woolton’, which has been set up to help clean areas in the ward that the council has either missed or where there is a high level of litter, continues to be a success.

Many local people came together on 26th February and done a fantastic job in helping to clean up the local area. We continue to aim to meet on the last Saturday of each month at a location in the ward to clean that area, and anyone is welcome to come along. For anyone wishing to get involved in these events, we will meet again at 11.00 a.m. on Saturday 26th March, 2022, outside Lodes Pond Car Park. We look forward to seeing as many people as possible.

Woolton Youth Centre will once again be holding its holiday playscheme over the Easter holidays between Monday 11th April and Friday 22nd April. This is a very popular holiday club and if you would like your children to attend, please make contact directly with the youth centre on 0151 428 4481, or email wooltonplayscheme@hotmail.co.uk Woolton Village continues to host a Farmers Market on the 2nd Saturday of each month. We would urge local people to support this monthly event, which will help in bringing even more stall holders to the market and make it even more popular. The next market will take place on Saturday 9th April 2022. Please support this market.

Councillor Mirna Juarez Woolton Hunts Cross Ward Liberal Democrats

Dear Residents I hope you are keeping safe and well during this winter and looking forward to spring.

MUCH WOOLTON SCHOOL After a long campaign by myself and parents I can report back that at last road safety measures are being proposed for children attending Much Woolton Catholic Primary School.

These safety measures are long overdue and much needed as there is chaos at drop off and pick up times in the local area. Local residents will now be consulted on the proposals to close sections of the highway at selected times to allow the school gates to be clear of traffic.

NEW GREEN BIN CHARGE At the Annual Budget meeting held earlier this month the ruling Labour administration voted to implement an annual charge of £40 to our green bin collection service. I represent a ward where nearly every home has a garden and will be affected by this charge. This charge will also have an effect on our environment as residents could be tempted to put their green garden waste in their normal purple bin adding more waste and costs for landfill to the council.

It was also decided at the budget meeting by the ruling Labour group that our council tax bill would be increasing by 2.99% in April and that cuts would be made to Adult Social Care. At the meeting I heard Cabinet members say many times that this budget looks to protect the most vulnerable in our city. But how can this be the case when the most vulnerable will be affected by this budget. The decisions for the increases do not make sense when people are finding it really difficult to pay for heating and food and ensuring their loved ones are cared for in a dignified manner.

I along with my colleagues voted against this despicable budget and moved an amendment which was voted down.

HUNTS CROSS COMMUNITY GARDEN The Friends of Hunts Cross are getting busy in preparing the community garden for the spring. I am delighted to be able to support them yet again. I have awarded them funding for two picnic benches. The friends are also installing a pergola.

It is fantastic to see local residents busy in the garden and making plans to put a list of events together for our Easter celebrations. St Hilda’s Church and the local churches in Hunts Cross will be holding an Easter service on Good Friday at 12 noon. GATEACRE SCHOOL’S AWARDING WINNING BIG LITTLE LIBRARY HAS MOVED!

After 5 years in ‘unit 6’ in Belle Vale Shopping Centre, we have been given the incredible opportunity to move to bigger premises in the former Friday Harbour Café.

This is now the 4th time the BLL has moved within the centre, and each time it brings with it a new sense of excitement, as we will always meet new customers that have never heard of us before, who go on to spread the word. It’s also lovely when we move to see what new spaces we can create, and with the size of our new unit we are able to create a new children’s area, as well as a dedicated travel and health section.

We have already noticed that within a week of opening the new shop our customers spend even more time with us to sit and chat, but with the added space it brings with it a chance to sit and read as well, which is lovely to see!

We can’t wait to start our reading groups again as well as work with our local primary schools to welcome them to our new shop!

I’m Kelly! Owner & Creative behind Woolton Village’s new independent patisserie bakery brand Get Yer Macaron! Our speciality as you might have guessed is macarons! But we aren’t your average one-stop macaron shop... we’re doing something much different to what’s been done before by modernising the traditional French Macaron. We create popular flavours of today and childhood favourites including lotus biscoff, oreo, red velvet cheesecake, black forest gateau, bailey’s Irish cream, pistachio, passionfruit martini and many more.

I lost my job as a PA for a large corporate finance firm when Covid-19 hit during the first lockdown. Times were difficult, but I turned my secret baking passion into a business dream. Before my time as a Personal Assistant, I’d always worked within the hospitality sector since the age of 16 having worked my way up (I’m now 30 years old); I always knew that one day I’d have a business of my own, but just didn’t know what that would be until there was a trend or a gap in the market for a new niche. Low and behold, Get Yer Mac was born!

I’m fully self-taught and love strengthening my skill set pushing my boundaries daily. We don’t offer just macarons though. We work with other local independent businesses stocking The Butterholic’s famous pastries and the most sought after sourdough breads and French sticks from Plattsville Bakehouse.

Other patisserie I bake that’s available on the counter are my brownies, cakes and French classics madeleines and caneles, plus more unusual creations being released soon. We also bake macaron celebration cakes as an alternative to the traditional sponge cakes.

We now stock our macarons in Butter Liverpool coffee and cocktail bar on Slater Street, previously stocked with Monkeyboard Coffee in The Metquarter in Liverpool City Centre and are now partnering with Beauty Bazaar Harvey Nichols on regular weekly in-house events, with the most recent client we catered for being Barclays.

You can find us next to the Istanbul - On the side there’s a stairwell which we share with Maria Morrisroe hairdressers (our pink neon macaron sign glows right above). Head on up the stairs and our home welcomes you with its floor to ceiling space that opens right up.

A Message from your Labour Councillors Dear Residents, As the Government has relaxed coronavirus restrictions, it’s important to note we’re still seeing hospitalisations, and unfortunately deaths in the region. Everyone aged 12 and over can make a pre-bookable appointment for vaccine via the NHS Covid-19 Vaccination Booking

We wanted to tell you a bit more about some of the work we’re doing in our community. As your representatives, we’ve secured record levels of road investment for the area, with over £6 million of local road resurfacing work either completed or due to take place — and we’re actively lobbying for the work to start on roads such as Speke Road, Hunts Cross Avenue and Manor Road. Our hugely popular, and free community skip scheme has restarted, (introduced by Labour and since 2019 alone, we’ve provided more than 150 free skips!).

We’ll also soon be restarting our Big Spring Clean Up campaign in Hunts Cross. We’ll be organising community litter picking events and delivering free

litter pickers to residents. When we first started this initiative, we were inundated with requests from our neighbours, who were eager to get involved. If you’d like a free litter picker, please contact Cllr Sharon Connor.

We’ve worked with Hunts Cross Children’s Centre and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to deliver free, monthly books to local families, (over the years we’ve funded more than 1,300 free books through the scheme!). We’re also supporting Hunts Cross Primary School with funding, so they can provide even more opportunities for children with special educational needs to thrive.

We’ve recently had one of our regular walkabouts with our Police and Community Support Officers in Hunts Cross, and have been out discussing everything from antisocial behaviour to parking enforcement. If you see us on one of our walkabouts, please don’t hesitate to stop us and have a chat. We’re also in regular contact with Merseyrail, about the installation of two brand new lifts at Hunts Cross Station. Along with the new trains, this will be a huge step towards making the station fully accessible. We’re really pleased to

confirm that the work is on track to finish in Spring 2022.

We’re continuing to speak with our Labour Team in Cressington, and the organisation ‘Scouse FlowerHouse’, about plans to introduce Wildflower Meadows across the area - and we’ve been supporting the fantastic charity South Liverpool Zero Waste Community, who work to reduce food poverty and waste. Cllr Sharon Connor is a regular volunteer, assisting with food collection and delivery to community hubs on a weekly basis. If you’re interested in lending a hand, contact the team today via their Facebook page.

Lastly, we’ve been chatting to the Team at the Cheshire Lines Club, about their fantastic fundraising efforts, and will be making a donation towards the costs of a defibrillator. They’ve done so well and we’re looking forward to when this life-saving piece of kit is introduced on site.

THE WOOLTON SOCIETY After many months of waiting for various permissions things are moving forward rapidly this year, as listed buildings consent has been granted for a heritage plaque to commemorate Dr Carl Warner to be placed on Woolton House Medical Centre. The council’s Park Operations department has recently agreed to a tree being planted in Reynolds Park to celebrate the society’s fiftieth anniversary.

The society is also planning heritage plaques to be placed on the former court house on Quarry Street, & on the home of Janet Gnosspelius in Hightor Road. These two are not listed buildings, unlike many others in Woolton, & so require only the agreement of the property owners for a heritage plaque to be placed there. The court house was also a bridewell & magistrate’s court, as well as accommodation for the police sergeant. Janet Gnosspelius was an architect & conservationist who founded the Woolton & Gateacre societies. Dr Warner lived & worked in Woolton House before & after the war, serving with the RAMC in North Africa. He was a pacifist & a Quaker, & was awarded the Military Cross for attending to casualties while under fire at the battles of Alamein. A Woolton Society pamphlet will be written later in the year with more information about all the plaques so far installed by the society, together with a map showing their location.

The society has now resumed talks at St Mary’s hall off Church Road, a move which has been welcomed by many members.

A talk on Woolton’s High Street was very much appreciated, with Dr Janet Hollinshead & Marie Passey giving a very well researched history of this part of our village. At the time of going to press it is hoped that Elaine Allen’s talk The Little Red Box, on the history of the telephone box will be fourth time lucky for the society, as her talk had been a casualty of Covid in 2020 & 2021. The talk is planned for 16th March. On Wednesday 20th April at 7.30pm the speaker will be David Hearn, who will have the first Mersey tunnel as his subject.

As this is the society’s jubilee year several events are planned exclusively for members. A coach tour on 26th June will take members up through Liverpool to visit Another Place, otherwise known as The Iron Men, on Crosby beach. A walking tour through the hidden byways of central Liverpool will be on July 10th. Both tours will be led by Blue Badge guide Marie Passey, & will be free to society members. On the coach trip priority will be given to those with mobility issues who would find the walking tours problematic. Members will be advised of the booking arrangements.

WOW (Women of Woolton) Women’s Institute is part of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes. Our monthly meetings cover crafts, campaigns and issues of the day as well as providing a forum for an active and friendly social life.

We are so happy to have resumed our Monthly Members meeting in reality at Woolton Golf Club which has a beautiful function suite& accommodates our 100 members comfortably. The last 12 months have been very interesting yet challenging. We have continued to enjoy what we could do and not worry about what we couldn’t do.

At our February members meeting our speaker was Peter Rimmer who entertained us with “The Tides the Very Devil” a fascinating talk all about Morecambe Bay. Our March speaker was Roger Blaxhall with his talk “Should I stay or should I Go” this was extremely interesting especially with all the current problems in Ukraine and Roger told us about his reunion with evacuees during World War 2.

We have introduced small controlled groups at the Simpson ground for crafts such as stencilling, Macramé, card making, floral wreaths and many more & continue with groups for reading, board games, walking, quizzes, art & ukulele tuition. We recently visited The Empire theatre to see Mathew Bournes - Nutcracker - what a fantastic treat.

Our speakers programme is now complete for the year of 2022 with a wide range of varied excellent speakers for us all to enjoy.

Through these activities we want to give fulfilling and enriching experiences with horses to people living with dementia or other similar conditions, in a way which is supportive, safe and inclusive for the person living with a disability, their carers, our volunteers and our horses.

Beechley Stables is now inviting care home residents and those living in their own homes to enjoy a cup of Tea and cake, whilerevisiting memories from years gone by.
