FROM THE PRESIDENT

LEADING GROWTH INSPIRING CHANGE

Dr. Vern Lindquist and Nour Issa, recipient of JCC’s Academic Excellence Award.

As I begin my fourth year as President of Johnston Community College, it is my privilege to share some of the exciting progress and transformational growth happening on our campus and throughout Johnston County. Over the past year, JCC has experienced remarkable expansion—not just in enrollment, but also in opportunity, innovation, and impact. Our record-breaking enrollment growth, new facilities, and innovative community initiatives are all made possible by the strength of our partnerships.

This fall, we enrolled the highest number of degree-seeking students in JCC history: more than 6,400. Nearly a third of those are dually enrolled high school students. We have seen a 60 percent increase in curriculum students since 2021, and our workforce programs have grown exponentially as well.

At the heart of this momentum are the many relationships we’ve cultivated with local businesses, industries, government agencies, JCPS, and nonprofit organizations. Together, we are building a stronger Johnston County.

These partnerships have led to:

• Expansion of workforce training programs that align with the region’s growing industries

• New articulation agreements with our neighboring two and four-year universities to ease student transfer pathways and to extend our associate degree offerings

• Collaborative projects in healthcare, public safety, agriculture, and advanced manufacturing

Whether it’s our dual-enrollment high school students earning college credits, our adult learners re-skilling for new careers, or the groundbreaking innovations emerging from our workforce programs, JCC is proud to be at the center of educational and economic opportunity in Johnston County.

This year, we opened the doors at the new Advanced Manufacturing Training Facility in Four Oaks. That collaboration with the I-95 / I-40 Crossroads of America Economic Development Alliance allows us to expand our reach to better serve the eastern part of our county and region.

We are excited about the future of JCC. As we look ahead, we remain committed to serving everyone in our community with integrity, vision, and compassion. Our mission is not only to educate our students, but to transform their lives.

None of it would be possible without you: our partners, supporters, and neighbors. So, thank you for believing in Johnston Community College. We invite you to stay engaged, share your ideas, and join us as we continue to grow together.

With gratitude, Dr. Vern L. Lindquist

MARY DOMINICI

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO FOLLOW A DREAM

At 82 years old, Mary Dominici walks the halls of Johnston Community College with a quiet confidence and a heart full of purpose. A proud TRiO student, Mary is not only pursuing her associate degree, she’s setting her sights on something even greater: transferring to a four-year university to major in education.

As a young woman, she gave up her dream of going to college to raise a family during a time when women were often discouraged from pursuing higher education. She said one day she felt a calling to drive to JCC.

Mary recalls from the moment she drove up, she knew JCC was “where she was supposed to be.” She says that was further solidified when she went into the TRiO office.

“When I walked in, I felt a spiritual connection. I knew TRiO was where I belonged.”

That connection was deepened by her relationship with Dr. Felita Carr, Dean of Retention and Student Support. Whether through community involvement, volunteer work, or simply lending a listening ear, she’s always had an intuitive understanding of people. “I’ve always been able to read people,” she says. “It’s like I can see who they really are, even before they tell me.” Now, that lifelong gift is guiding her toward her next chapter. With her own passion for learning and a giving heart, education feels like a natural fit. Mary’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, the strength of women, and the importance of programs like TRiO that make education accessible to all, regardless of age or circumstance.

“ We could not be prouder of Nicholas and the entire HVACR team,” said President Dr. Vern Lindquist. “This is a huge accomplishment for our students and our college.”

EMILY PICKENS

OPENING DOORS TO EVERY LEARNER

At Johnston Community College, the Access to Achievement program (A2A) is helping students with intellectual and developmental disabilities discover strengths, overcome challenges, and achieve their goals.

One such student is Emily Pickens, who, despite Autism and ADHD, is pursuing a career in cardiac sonography. Alongside her studies, Emily works in JCC’s library Makerspace, a creative hub with 3D printers, sewing machines, and other tools. She promotes the space, organizes ev ents, designs flyers, and fulfills 3D printing requests—from custom earrings to mouse ears—gaining hands-on experience in creativity, leadership, and organization. Emily’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. T ime management and procrastination, common hurdles with ADHD, initially made event planning difficult. Thr ough better organization and self-discipline, she learned to plan ahead and succeed. She has also developed patie nce with the 3D printing process, recognizing the value of persistence and quality.

With A2A’s support, Emily is turning her passion for science and technology into a pathway to help others, proving that determination and the right resources can transform challenges into opportunities.

EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO STAY ON TRACK

STUDENTS TAKE THE SPOTLIGHT

This year marked the launch of Content Crew, a dynamic initiative that brings authentic student voices to the Johnston Community College social media platforms. From hopping on the latest TikTok trends to sitting down for meaningful interviews with college leadership, these students are refining how our community connects with JCC.

At the heart of the group is a three-member Executive Committee, who lead their peers in brainstorming, creating, and curating posts that reflect the true spirit of life as a Jaguar. Their creativity and leadership are supported by scholarships funded by the Foundation.

The Content Crew has become a driving force behind the college’s social media presence; amplifying student perspectives, building school pride, and highlighting the vibrant campus experience that makes JCC unique.

The grand opening of the building drew hundreds of guests including U.S. and state lawmakers, Johnston County elected officials, and community members.

FORGING THE FUTURE OF INDUSTRY, RIGHT HERE IN JOHNSTON COUNTY — THE ADVANCED MANUFACTURING TRAINING FACILITY STANDS AS A BEACON OF PROGRESS AND PRIDE.

BUILDING THE WORKFORCE OF TOMORROW

Students in Welding, Applied and Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Integrated Machining can practice in real-world environments, preparing them for immediate entry into industries that drive Johnston County and North Carolina’s economy. The facility’s design encourages problem-solving, innovation, and collaboration, helping students adapt to the fast-evolving world of advanced manufacturing.

Beyond technical training, the facility strengthens pathways to high-wage, sustainable careers, offering students a chance to stay and work in their community while contributing to regional growth. By aligning curriculum with industry needs, the new hub makes JCC graduates even more competitive, giving them a distinct advantage as they enter the workforce or pursue further education.

FACULTY OF THE YEAR

WAYNE HARDIN

I enjoy working with JCC and the students who come through the program. It’s incredibly rewarding when they share how their education has changed their lives and families. As a Master Instructor with NC3, I value the opportunity to travel to colleges, teach other instructors, and build a strong professional network. Career highlights include speaking at the annual HVAC NC Community College Conference, being nominated as JCC’s Faculty of the Year, and watching our program double in size. I’m proud that textbook authors and HVAC influencers visit our campus, and that one of our students represented JCC at the National SkillsUSA HVAC competition, finishing in the top 10. Every day, I give 100% because I truly love this career and the difference it makes.

RUDOLPH A. HOWELL & SON

CRYSTAL NETTER

Being part of JCC for 25 years has been a rewarding experience. Supporting students as they achieve their educational goals and seeing the difference it makes in their lives has been one of the most meaningful aspects of my career. JCC has provided me with opportunities to build relationships and grow both professionally and personally.

Johnston Community College keeps the community buzzing with exciting events and experiences all year long. Each fall, Howell Woods comes alive with Howell-o-Ween, a family favorite featuring haunted hayrides, trick-or-treating, and fall festivities for all ages. Every November, JoCo Works brings thousands of eighth graders to campus for a unique career exploration event that sparks curiosity and future dreams. In the spring, Open House invites visitors to explore campus, meet instructors, and discover everything JCC has to offer. Summer heats up with JCC’s Summer Camps, where school-aged students dive into fun, skill-building activities ranging from Lego Robotics to CSI Camp. Together, these experiences celebrate learning, connection, and the vibrant spirit that makes JCC the heart of our community.

Johnston Community College’s Small Business Center was recognized at the SBC Network Fall Professional Development Conference. SBC Director Suzanne Ross and SBC & Workforce Coordinator Juli Spata were honored with statewide awards. Ross was named SBCN State Director of the Year and Spata received the Service Excellence Award.

Building on that momentum, the College hosted the Small Business Resource Summit which included an impressive lineup of vendors and speakers, including North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall. Having Secretary Marshall at the event was a tremendous honor and a significant opportunity for the local business community and the College to engage, learn, and grow together.

BUILDING LOCAL PARTNERSHIPS THAT WORK

OPENING DOORS TO CAREERS

Johnston Community College teamed up with NCWorks and Capital Area Workforce Development to bring roughly 460 job seekers face-to-face with 28 local employers eager to hire. The event highlighted Johnston County’s in-demand industries, from healthcare and biopharma to construction and public service.

It’s inspiring to see so many job seekers come together with employers who are eager to invest in the talent right here in Johnston County,” says JCC President Vern L. Lindquist. “

“This event is a key example of how JCC and NCWorks play a vital role in connecting individuals with opportunities that can lead to long-term career success,” Lindquist adds. The NCWorks Job Fair is one of many ways JCC continues to invest in people, connect talent to opportunity, and help Johnston County thrive.

TECHNOLOGY MEETS EDUCATION

Novo Nordisk, Johnston County’s largest private employer and a global leader in diabetes and obesity care, has donated a Fanuc manufacturing robot to Johnston Community College to strengthen biotechnology and engineering training. Novo Nordisk engineers presented the robot at the Johnston County Workforce Development Center, offering expertise to help instructors and students maximize its use. Once valued at up to $30,000 and use d on the company’s production lines, the robot will now serve as a powerful hands-on teaching tool.

We are excited to support JCC with this donation. Providing students with hands-on experience in robotics allows them to build essential skills that are directly applicable in the biotechnology field. Collaborating with local institutions is crucial for nurturing the future workforce.” said Jamie Ellis, Novo Nordisk Project Manager and Engineer.

JCC leaders echoed the impact. President Dr. Vern Lindquist emphasized that training on real equipment prepares students for high-tech, well-paying jobs, while Instructor Melissa Robbins noted the donation arrived just as automation was added to the program. Students will also have the chance to earn Fanuc certification. The gift builds on Novo Nordisk’s 30+ year partnership with JCC and its continued investment in Johnston County, including a $4.1 billion expansion bringing 1,000 new jobs. By repurposing this robot for education, Novo Nordisk and JCC are ensuring students gain the skills needed to drive innovation in biotechnology and beyond.

THE POWER OF GIVING

Greetings from the Johnston Community College Foundation and Board of Directors. I was beyond honored to become the Director of the JCC Foundation on April 1. It has been most exciting to join President Lindquist’s team and to be part of this community. I’m also grateful to the Foundation Board for welcoming me to JCC and for being such amazing partners as we raise philanthropic support for the college.

Donor support has played a crucial role in ensuring that our amazing students are able to pursue their dreams! Student support in the form of scholarships, emergency funds, etc. make a tremendous impact across campus. Even a car repair can be a deciding factor in whether a student is able to continue to attend their classes.

The JCC Foundation looks forward to continuing to work with current donors while building relationships with new donors. It is vitally important that we maintain a robust pipeline of donors to ensure that we are able to meet the needs of our students over the coming years. We also look forward to providing our constituents with opportunities to learn about the variety of ways they can support JCC via donor advised funds, transfers of stocks/appreciated assets, beneficiary designations, will bequests, etc.

On behalf of the JCC Foundation Team and Board, we continue to be beyond grateful to all of you for your ongoing support!

ohnston Community College Ambassador BJ Alvares-Herrera first shared his powerful story of perseverance at the 2022 Linda Vann Lassiter Women’s Society Luncheon. Orphaned as a teenager, BJ found a community that lifted him up, believed in his potential, and helped him grow into a leader. In 2025, he returned as the featured speaker and celebrated his graduation, reflecting on how his time at the college transformed his life. After transferring to NC State University, BJ continued to build on that foundation. His journey stands as a testament to resilience, hope, and the life-changing impact of opportunity at JCC.

The 7th Annual Linda Vann Lassiter Women’s Society Luncheon, held at The Farm @ 95, celebrated women empowering education through inspiring student stories like BJ’s and honored Michele Brownlee as the 2025 Philanthropist of the Year. In 2024 alone, members contributed over $37,000, growing the Society’s endowments to more than $700,000 in support of student success and opportunity.

A RED-CARPET NIGHT FOR A GREAT CAUSE

The 3rd Annual Casino Night brought the community together for an unforgettable evening of red-carpet glamour, lively casino games, smooth jazz, and dazzling entertainment. Nearly 150 guests filled the Tart Great Hall, enjoying a night of fun while supporting a meaningful cause.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of sponsors and attendees, over $30,000 was raised to strengthen student success, fund professional development, and enhance college programs that make a lasting impact.

Casino Night continues to prove that when the community comes together, everyone wins!
