Welcome to Norwich & Norfolk Refugee Week 2010 Refugee Week 2010 will be from 14th-20th June. It is a UK wide programme of events and activities that take place all across the country to celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK. Its main aim is to encourage better understanding between different communities and cultures. Norwich has for several years promoted Refugee Week thanks to the support and dedication of a network of partner organisations from the public, voluntary and community sector. Our sincere thanks and gratitude goes to everyone who has contributed to the programme booklet. This year, our local theme is “Community engagement and cohesion,” and the events coordination of events is led by two local community groups: The Bridge Plus+, and the Asylum Voice project of The British Red Cross. Refugee Week has now developed into an annual Norfolk-wide celebration which offers a diverse programme of events from films to social events, exhibitions and a family fun day. And for the first time, more events take place in the rural towns and villages of Norfolk.

We hope the programme will engage people who would not have otherwise had the opportunity to hear about and increase their understanding of refugee issues. It is worth reminding ourselves that Norfolk has a great tradition of welcoming refugees, known as “Strangers” in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Strangers’ legacy remains visible in city landmarks and the dialects of Norfolk. Finally, I would like to dedicate this year’s celebrations to the late Councillor Hereward Cooke who passed away in December 2009. Hereward was the former chair of the Norwich multi-agency forum for asylum seeker and refugee integration. He was a community leader who cared and gave his time, and he was, in his own rights, a champion for minority issues. I hope you enjoy this 2010 edition of Refugee Week in Norwich and Norfolk. Imagine borrowing a person from your local library in the same way you would borrow a book. How easily would you ‘read’ the book? Would you find what you expected to, and can you really judge a book by its cover? During Refugee Week 2010 you’ll have the opportunity to find out - you can borrow a ‘human book’, and read it; which means chatting, asking questions and discovering whole new worlds. As it is Refugee Week all of the ‘books’ on loan will have some connection to that theme. This event has had a great effect on participants across the world and is not to be missed. This is a Shahrazad event, supported by the EU Culture Programme.

Estimates of the UK’s refugee population suggest that it only amounts to 0.6% of the total UK population.

ASYLUM SEEKERS ARE LOOKING FOR A PLACE OF SAFETY: Asylum seekers do not come here for economic reasons. The top ten refugee-producing countries in 2003 all have poor human rights records or are places where war or conflict is ongoing. (Institute

for Public Policy Research, 2003). Under international law, anyone has the right to apply for asylum in the UK and to remain here until the authorities have assessed their asylum application. Therefore, there is no such thing as an ‘illegal’ or ‘bogus’asylum seeker.

The Brussels Poetry Collective set out to ignite some passion into the discourse over Europe’s true soul by commissioning some startling poetry from over 50 poets living in or exiled from Europe, including Nobel Prize winner Seamus Heaney and 2006 Cervantes Prize winner Antonio Gamoneda. Collectively called the European Constitution in Verse, the resulting poems are critical, passionate and real. FOOD FACTS: Has it ever occurred to you that there might be some “refugees” in your fridge? Garlic, for example, originally came from Central Asia and was frowned upon by the Americans until as recently as the 1940s. Our old friend the tomato is in fact a native of South America, and was greeted with suspicion by the British because they thought it was poisonous. Even the lowly

potato has roots in the mountains of South America, and was for a long time snubbed by Europeans because they considered it to be the food of the underclass. When you think about it, almost any dish you care to imagine includes ingredients that come from somewhere else. Just imagine how much less tasty our lives would be if these foods had stayed at home?

Ranging from Downham Market in the west to Great Yarmouth in the east, and from Cromer in the north to Thetford in the south, we look at the experiences of refugees themselves and also how they have been received in the county. There will be a display of original archive materials.

Asylum Dialogues Tuesday 15th June | 7:30-8.30pm For one night only, catch this performance of IceAndFire’s theatre play Asylum Dialogues. Drawn from real life conversations with British Citizens and people they have met who are seeking sanctuary here – Asylum Dialogues highlights some of the many acts of solidarity shown by British people towards refugees living alongside them. The play was launched in June 2008 and has been touring the UK ever since. It is performed by Actors for Human Rights, IceAndFire’s network of professional actors dedicated to drawing public attention to contemporary human rights concerns. This production is brought to you by the Broadland Community Partnership. Esau’s Story - a talk by Isabel Ingram

Join Frank Meeres for a walk through the centre of Norwich, looking at the lasting impact made on the city landscape and environment by refugees over many hundreds of years. Norwich has many fascinating stories to tell about refugees in its past: come along and learn about them.

Isabel Ingram tells the extraordinary story of Esau, a Ugandan asylum-seeker, from his incarceration in Rochester Prison and Yarlswood Detention Centre, through months and years of hearings and appeals to the final achievement of refugee status. Separated from his wife and children, and suffering the physical and emotional legacy of abuse from his home country, Isabel found Esau at his lowest point, within a void of deep despair. With a perfect blend of tenacity, strategy, and generous heart, Isabel supported Esau through the tortuous maze of asylum application, and has seen him and his reunited family establish themselves in London with full and fulfilling lives. This event is brought to you by the Norwich group of Amnesty International.

Dr George Szirtes, Reader in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia, will discuss the work of refugee poets and artists from the Hungarian revolution of 1956. The talk will explore the importance of the contribution of these refugees to the cultural scene in the UK, and look at the challenges they faced in adapting to a new way of life and a new writing language.

In McCarthy's follow-up to his award-winning debut “the Station Agent”, Richard Jenkins (Six Feet Under) stars as widower Walter Vale who discovers that a young immigrant couple, Tarek (Sleiman) and Zainab (Gurira), have been scammed into illegally renting his vacant flat in New York City. Walter agrees to let them stay until they find a place and soon Walter and Tarek form a friendship. When Tarek is confined to a detention centre, and his mother arrives in search of him, Walter's emotional commitment to Tarek's case is sealed. As the four people struggle to deal with the stark realities of the US immigration system and their own individual lives, their shared humanity is revealed in awkward, humorous and dramatic ways.

As part of their Lunchbox meetings, Norwich & District members of the United Nations Association welcome you to meet Rose Mujaranji, a refugee from Zimbabwe. She will be interviewed by Stephen Rees, of the Justice and Peace Group. Rose fled in fear for her life, threatened by Zanu-PF supporters of President Robert Mugabe. Her relatives were known to favour the Prime Minister’s Movement for Democratic Change. Despite a government of national unity, hostility towards people resistant to Mr Mugabe erupts in uncontrolled violence.The United Nations Association respects the universal human right of asylum for anyone whose life is threatened by endemic violence in their native country. Because of her difficult journey to cousins in Britain, Rose was consigned to Yarls Wood Detention Centre awaiting return to Zimbabwe. She still does not know if she will be granted leave to remain in this country. Guests can bring their own lunch and tea/coffee/biscuits will be available from 12.15pm.

Would you find what you expected to, and can you really judge a book by its cover? During Refugee Week 2010 you’ll have the opportunity to find out - you can borrow a ‘human book’, and read it; which means chatting, asking questions and discovering whole new worlds. As it is Refugee Week all of the ‘books’ on loan will have some connection to that theme. This event has had a great effect on participants across the world and is not to be missed. Norwich, City of Refuge; Welcome to Norfolk A podcast th th 13th-20th June This podcast provides a walking tour of Norwich city centre, looking at the lasting impact refugees have made on the city landscape and environment over many hundreds of years. There are 11 stops on the walk, which should last approximately 90 minutes. It starts at the Erpingham Gate, Norwich Cathedral Close, and finishes at Norwich Roman Catholic Cathedral. Future Radio, Norwich’s community radio station (107.8 & 96.9FM, www.futureradio.co.uk) will be providing comprehensive coverage of this year’s Refugee Week programme. Tune in from 7th June to hear interviews with event organisers, local artists, and refugees, as well as special features, arts coverage, and information on all the events taking place. Future Radio has recently finished two training programmes with Congolese and Iraqi refugee groups, and they will be producing special shows which will air during Refugee Week.
