MYTH

If you’re only driving a short distance, there’s no need for tiedowns (or for more than one or two).

FACT

The federal cargo securement rules in 49 CFR 393, Subpart I, do not include any exceptions for “short” or low speed movements.

MYTH

Tiedowns must always be spaced equally, at every 10 feet.

FACT

In general, you need at least one tiedown for every 10 feet of cargo, but not specifically placed at every 10 feet along the length of the vehicle. However, tiedowns should be evenly spaced whenever possible.

Keep fatigued drivers off the road, and avoid costly violations with solutions and expertise to help you navigate FMCSR 49 CFR Section 392.3 and Part 395 regulations.

Monthly Log Summary Envelopes

These envelopes will perform two very important functions for you:

DID YOU KNOW?

When choosing tarp straps, consider when and where they’ll be used. Temperature and climate can negatively impact your straps. Natural rubber works best in cooler weather where the material remains pliable and strong, even with extreme cold. EPDM straps have more natural resistance to heat and sunlight (as well as acids and bases), so they last longer and remain elastic and durable when the hot weather hits. No matter your choice, remember that tarp straps are not designed to secure cargo.

ISO 17712 Security Seal Classifications

High Security (C-TPAT compliant) Security Indicative “H” HIGH-SECURITY SEALS have the most tensile strength (>10kN) and are typically cable seals with 1 8" diameter or thicker cable diameter and bolt seals. They usually can only be removed with a cable cutter, bolt cutter, or heavy-duty cutting tool. Only “H” high-security seals are C-TPAT compliant.

“S” SECURITY SEALS feature medium tensile strength (>2.27 kN - <10kN) and are typically cable seals with smaller than 1 8" diameter cable. They generally are removed with a cable cutter or snips.

“I” INDICATIVE SEALS are of lower tensile strength (<2.27 kN) and are typically plastic seals and metal strap seals. They can be removed by hand or with simple cutting tools like shears or snips.
