Dear Bloodfriends,
Blood represents life, and thus donating Blood is donating life itself. Due to rise in incidents of accidents and modernised treatment management need of blood is growing day by day. Each donor becomes a beacon of hope for those who are struggling between life and death. Blood donation is also a proclamation of unconditional love and dedication. Let's salute all the donors by acknowledging their unparalleled dedication.
The Gulf NRKs have already carved a niche of their own in the field of Social service and thus have become a role model for others. They are the strong pillars of the development of our society & State. They extend their help when the state is in trouble too. The state remembers with gratitude the help extended by the NRKs during the time of the recent flood.
It is happy to know that Blood Donors Kerala (BDK) Kuwait chapter have conducted an awareness campaign on Voluntary Blood Donation which lasted for one year.
On behalf of Federation of Indian Blood Donors Organizations (FIBDO), the national level platform of Blood Donor Organizations it is my privilege to offer sincere greetings to this Noble venture "ASPIRE 2K18".
with regards,

Greetings from Indian Doctors Forum-IDF Kuwait
Congratulations to the Office-bearers of BDK Kuwait Chapter for the successful completion of an year long awareness campaign and Blood donation program in kuwait.
The efforts put in by the organization are praise worthy .Bringing a donor of rare Bombay blood group by clearing all hurdles from Qatar is a great example.I have personally attended the BDK awareness event.
The mere information of benefits of blood donation and it's importance in saving a valuable life of an individual motivates the blood donation. The myths and lack of information is the reason for not getting enough blood. In this regard awareness campaign and Maintaining a donors web list eases the process in getting even the rare group blood in an emergency.
Wish you all the success in your future community activities including the Community Empowerment program on December 7 -2018 as closing ceremony of year long campaign. IDF is glad to associate with BDK in the community activities. Best wishes.
Dr.Surendra Nayak
President Indian Doctors Forum Kuwait.

DONATE BLOOD, SAVE LIVES
Dr. Sunny Varghese
Hematology Unit, Department of Laboratory Al Adan Hospital
What is blood donation ?
It is the voluntary donation of about 450 ml of your blood to the blood bank for use in needy patients. Many patients require to be given blood and blood products for conditions like massive blood loss following accidents or trauma and also in different disease conditions like anaemia where there is decreased production of blood components in the body or there is increased destruction of blood in the body as a result different disease conditions.
Why donate blood ?
By donating blood we are saving another life. It is one such service only a fellow human being can do for you, because blood cannot be produced artificially in factories like any other commodity in the Market, so far. Each pack of Blood is unique and it has to come from another human being only.
Who can donate blood ?
Any healthy adult between the ages of 17 and 70 years can donate blood. Pregnant and lactating mothers are excluded along with certain exceptions.
How often can you donate blood ?
One can safely donate blood every three- four months, subject to maximum of three donations per year. Any way our system replaces all the blood in our body every three months
What are the hazards of blood donation to the donor ?
The most common hazard of blood donation is fainting attack, mostly seen in anxious/ apprehensive individuals and in those donating for the first time. It can be avoided by drinking fluids prior to the donation and enforcement of adequate rest immediately after the donation. Once the faint occurs, one needs only to rest in horizontal position with elevation of legs is usually sufficient. For the same reason drivers and machine operators are advised not to return to work the same day after donation. Other minor hazards include hematoma at the site of venepuncture, infection of the venepuncture site are rarely seen.
What happens to the blood after you donate ?
Blood after donation goes through many checks and testing before it can be received by a patient, quite contrary to the myth and what we usually see in movies. In short the blood is tested for the type/group, tested for transmissible diseases, separated into different blood components and tested for compatibility to the intended recipient blood.
What are the different blood type/ groups ?
Human blood groups are classified/typed by different blood types like ABO system, Rh system, MNS system, Kell, Duffy, Kidd etc. We usually classify blood in the ABO and Rh system because

of the increased clinical relevance of the system. In the ABO system we have four blood groups viz A, B, AB and o and in the Rh system we have Rh Negative (-ve) and Rh Positive (+ve) and accordingly one can usually be belonging to any one of the eight groups like A +ve or A -ve;B +ve or B -ve; AB +ve or AB-ve and 0 +ve or 0-ve
What are the diseases routinely tested for from my blood ?
The blood we donate are routinely screened for transfusion transmissible pathogens like HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and malaria
What are the different blood components ?
They are Packed RBC, granulocyte concentrate, platelet concentrate, fresh frozen plasma and cryoprecipitate
Packed RBC consists mostly of Red Blood Cells and is usually given to patients with anaemia for increasing their haemoglobin level. One unit dose is about 350 -450 ml in volume and can be stored at 4-8 °c up to 42 days after collection with suitable additives. One unit when transfused increases the haemoglobin level by about 1gm/di.
Granulocyte concentrate consists of the granulated white blood cells (WBC) and are extremely labile and hence required to be transfused within few hours to the patient. It is given for combating severe infections .
Platelet concentrates are concentrated platelet fractiun as the name implies, each unit is about 50-55 ml in volume and can be stored up to 5-7 days at room temperature of 20-22 °c. It is usually given to boost the platelet count of patients with thrombocytopenia or platelet diseases.
Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) is the fluid which remains in the whole blood after removal of cellular elements like RBC, WBC and Platelets mentioned above and are frozen for storage within 24 hours of collection. They are stored at -30 °c or below up to 24 months. Require to be thawed rapidly to 37 °c before transfused to the patient. It contains all coagulation factors and is used to correct coagulation factor deficiencies like in haemophilia patients' if the specific factor concentrates are not easily available. Cryoprecipitate is prepared from FFP and contains factor VIII and Fibrinogen and mostly used as source of fibrinogen .
What is cross matching of blood ?
Cross matching is also referred to as compatibility testing. It is the process by which the donor cells are tested against the potential recipient plasma or serum to detect and identify any antibodies in the recipient that can react with the cells of the donor. It avoids development of transfusion reactions in the recipient as far as possible. It takes at least about 30 minutes to do an uncomplicated cross match in a routine patient and may last up to 2-3 working days in complicated cases.

What is artificial blood ?
Yes that is the future of blood transfusion. Research is seeking for a product which can replace the functions of blood and blood components but at the same time free from the antigens and antibodies which often create problems in the recipient. Clinical Trials are going on worldw ide. May be artificial blood will be licensed for use in humans in future.

About Us
WELCOME BLOOD DONORS KERALA
BLOOD DONORS KERALA abbreviated as BDK is the idea of Mr. VINOD BHASKARAN, a KSRTC bus conductor from Changanacherry, Kottayam. He stated a Facebook page by the name "We Help" initially in the year 2011 to bring a social change in our society with the help of the social media. Later seeing the endless requirment of blood in hospitals, Blood Donors Kerala was found in the year 2014 with a vision to help and guide the unorganised blood requirements happening in and around the hospitals in Kerala. In a short span, BDK has become the preferred blood donation channel for a lot of people in Kerala. BDK is now a registered charitable trust (REG.NO.KTM/TC/840/2014) with it's wings spread across India and all GCC Countries.
Once in every 2- seconds, someone somewhere is desperately in need of blood. More than 29 million units of blood components are transfused every year. Each year, we could meet only up to 1% (approx) of our nation's demand for blood transfusion.
Despite the increase in the number of donors, blood remains in short supply during emergencies, mainly due to the lack of information and accessibility. We have been trying to overcome most of these challenges by effectively connecting the blood donors with the blood recipients through our solid, energetic and sincere coordinator network across India and all GCC Countries.
Team BDK have successfully managed to coordinate each blood request received so far and extend a hand of support for the recipients who were desperately running for a unit of blood. If you wish to donate blood, or required blood for any emergency cases, please visit our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/blooddonorsgroupforkerala/

It is originally described in Bombay, India. It is a very rare phenotype with a prevalence about 1 per 10,000 individuals in India and about 1 per 1, 00,000 individuals in Europe. It is characterized by the absence of H, A and B antigens on red blood cells. Those individuals type as blood group O. And Due to the lack of H antigen, they form anti-H antibodies in their plasma, which is clinically signiďŹcant and associated with acute hemolytic transfusion reactions. That is why these patients shall receive blood from donors with this rare Bombay phenotype. Siblings of patients with this rare Bombay phenotype shall be tested for compatibility.
In Kuwait Central Blood Bank, 4 cases with Bombay blood group were identiďŹed. 2 of them were Indian and the other 2 were Arabian.
At the end of 2017, Blood Donors Kerala âKuwait Chapterâ, help to provide one donor with this rare Bombay phenotype living in Qatar to come and donate for one of our patients in Kuwait central blood bank.

Future Projects:
Blood transfusion is an indispensable component of health care. It contributes to saving millions of lives each year in both routine and emergency situations, permits increasingly complex medical and surgical interventions and dramatically improves the life expectancy and quality of life of patients with a variety of acute and chronic conditions.
Patients who require transfusion as part of their clinical management have the right to expect that suďŹcient blood will be available to meet their needs and to receive the safeďŹ blood possible. However, many patients ďŹill die or suďŹer unnecessarily because they do not have access to safe blood transfusion. The timely availability of safe blood and blood products is essential in all health facilities in which transfusion is performed, but in many developing and transitional countries there is a widespread shortfall between blood requirements and blood supplies.
As a socially committed organization, we aim to promote voluntary blood donation to ensure 100% safe blood by 2020.
Provide information and guidance on the vital role of voluntary blood donors in assuring the availability of ďŹable and suďŹcient supplies of safe blood for transfusion.
