Thoughts on Music
There are over a hundred kinds of apes on earth, but only one sings. That is homo sapiens. Singing springs from the human ability to think; and from the ability to sing, says Darwin, comes human ability to talk. Human beings in the Arctic, in tropical forests, throughout Africa, in Europe, in Asia, everywhere sing. Despite differences in intonation, there are remarkable similarities in the melodies sung by people everywhere in the ancient world. One common factor is that the most melodies scattered over the face of the earth use only five notes. The Chinese are said to have invented the musical scale. This happened when somebody recognized that in the fundamental tone of a piece of rock (remember the stone pillars of Madurai Meenakshi temple in Tamil Nadu) there is another tone, what we call today the fifth, or panchamam. Yes,sa contains pa. From the awareness of this relationship it was not difficult to sing that overtone as an independent tone. This way they came to know of the fifths of subsequent tones and thus discovered re, dha, ni and more.
At first all music was folk music. After many thousands of years of folk music, art music developed in temples and palaces, both in Asia and Europe. Eventually, art musicians who were composers and performers wrote their findings as music theory. The oldest theory book in the world is Bharata’s Naatya Shaastra, which may be over 2000 years old.
The most ancient musical instrument is the human voice. Next came percussion instruments, beginning with tree trunks and sticks, then drums made of wood, skins and ropes. From the beginning of time to until 1960s, when Robert Moog, a physics major at Cornell University, USA (my alma mater for higher studies in music) invented the sound synthesizer, musical instruments were made of raw materials found in nature. In India music is a complex art comprised of song, instrumental music and dance. Alain Danielou, a Frenchman who lived for over 32 years in Benares and studied Indian music seriously, cites Greek sources as saying, “We learned music and dance from India.” This is not surprising, as Indians, Greeks and Persians all originated around the Caspian Sea from a common ancestry and spread to various parts of the earth. Ancient India extended almost to the borders of Greece. The ancient Romans used to write at the periphery of thei rudimentary maps of their empire, Hic vivunt Indiani: here live Indians.
When Europeans of the 12th century returned home from the Crusades, they brought with them musical instruments from the Middle East. They improved and polished and turned them into lutes, guitars, vielles (precursors of violins), violas, celli, contrabassi, schaums, oboes, English horns and so on. Europe would not have these refined musical instruments today if they had not got prototypes from the Middle East. The piano is patterned after the cembalum, which in turn is patterned after the ancient shata-tantri veena of India, today known as santoor. The liturgical music of the old Christians of Kerala and the folk music of the Muslims of Malabar also have their roots in the Middle East.
LATIN CHORAL MUSIC Despite mutual influence and consequent enrichment, every major language - Chinese, Sanskrit, Arabic, Greek and Latin - has a distinct singing culture of its own. The early Christian chant Kyrie Eleison in Greek is an example of singing in two groups generally by men and women. This is called responsorial or antiphonal singing. It has come all the way from King David’s first temple, before it was destroyed in 586 BCE.
The Kyrie Eleison mentioned above demonstrates the way of singing without thaalam but following the ebb and flow of the language, Latin. Indian music, in general, is monophonic, i.e., we have only one thread of melody while some other music systems, are polyphonic, meaning three or four different threads of melody are sung at the same time. Sometimes polyphonic music has regular beats or thaalam. But sometimes it does not have regular beats but only a natural flow of the spoken language. Sometimes singing is accompanied by musical instruments, sometimes not.
Music is one. Different cultures have evolved it differently. Music of every culture is beautiful. We should learn to appreciate it wherever it flourishes.

Abide with me (Men’s Voice & Choral Society) Lyrics by Henry F. Lyte, 1820 Music by William H. Monk, 1861
Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide; Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me.
I need Thy presence every passing hour; What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s power? Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

Dry Bones (Men’s Voice)
Traditional Spiritual Arranged with Additional Lyrics & Music by Mark Hayes
There was a man named Ezekiel, who lived many years ago. He was carried away by the Spirit of the Lord, to a valley full of old, dry bones.
Then Ezekiel was asked by the Lord Most High, “Can these bones ever be revived?”
After pondering this question, this is what he said, “Only the Lord God knows.”
So the Lord commanded Ezekiel to speak unto these bones, “Now hear the word of the Lord.”
Ezekiel cried, “Dem dry bones.” Now hear the word of the Lord.”
Ezekiel connected dem dry bones. Now hear the word of the Lord.
So the bones were connected by the power of the Lord when Ezekiel spoke the command But the bones had no breath, so the Lord God said, “Call the winds from across the lands.”
Then Ezekiel called to the Spirit in the winds to revive those bones on the ground. With a mighty sound those bones rose up and began to walk around!
Ezekiel turned dem dry bones, to live bones.
Ezekiel connected dem dry bones. Now hear the word of the Lord
The toe bone connected to the foot bone.
The foot bone connected to the ankle bone.
The ankle bone connected to the leg bone.
The leg bone connected to the knee bone.
The knee bone connected to the thigh bone. The thigh bone connected to the hip bone.
The hip bone connected to the back bone.
The back bone connected to the shoulder bone.
The shoulder bone connected to the neck bone.
The neck bone connected to the head bone.
Now hear the word of the Lord
Round and round and round and round, Dem Bones gonna walk all over God’s ground. Round and round and round and round, Hear the word of the Lord! Dem bones, dem bones, dem dry bones!!

Season of Hope (Men’s Voice & Choral Society)Theme Song
[Includes O Holy night!, Season of Hope & For unto us a child is born]
Arranged by Camp Kirkland
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks, A new and glorious morn! Fall on your knees! O hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night When Christ was born! O night, O Holy Night, O night divine!
This is a season of hope, a season of expectation. This is a season of joy, a season of celebration. This is a season of faith, a season of love and light. This is a season of hope, as we look to the birth of Christ. (2)
He is the hope of our hearts, the light of the world, The bright morning star, the Father’s incarnate word!
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, Unto us a son is given, and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counsellor, the mighty God. The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
He is the hope of our hearts, the light of the world, The bright morning star, the Father’s incarnate word! This is a season of hope, a season of expectation. This is a season of joy, a season of celebration. This is a season of faith, a season of love and light. This is a season of hope, as we look to the birth of Christ. (2)
