“An incredibly useful resource for all dyslexic children and the grown-ups who support them in their dyslexia journey.” – Cathy Magee, chief executive of Dyslexia Scotland

“Such a useful book, carefully created to keep children with dyslexia engaged, help them stand up for themselves, and work out all the ways they excel.” –Margaret Rooke, author of ‘Dyslexia is my Superpower (Most of the Time)’

Actually, you’re right, Creatia. I always have extra time to complete tasks for this reason. You might be allowed some extra time, or somebody to write for you or read the questions for tests. Make sure you speak to your school about this.

Yes, it could be to do with the way you process information – that’s how you read or hear the instructions somebody gives to you. That’s what happens to me.

The truth is that different strategies will work for different people. Find out what works best for you and use it. This will be particularly helpful later in life when you are working towards exams or planning your day at school or work. Forgetting to plan or not asking for help are the most common reasons to run out of time. Remember to work with your teacher or grown-up to make sure you have planned out enough time to complete tasks – and think about time for breaks if you need them.

Some people with dyslexia prefer instructions to be broken down, instead of receiving all the information at once. Maybe that’s you? Do you find it easier when you are asked to do one thing at a time? Do you ever struggle with time disappearing? I know I’ve got 30 minutes, but when I look up, I’ve only got five left and I’ve no idea where the other 25 have gone! Some people prefer to be able to see how much time they have left – there are lots of great visual timers or countdown clocks that can be set to light up when half or all your time is up. Maybe that’s you? Would it help to have a timer that flashed green, orange or red to let you know when time is counting down?

The most important thing to do where time is concerned is breathe. Sounds obvious, doesn’t it? When you have a task or a job to do, the first thing you should do is take a deep breath. 43

EMBRACE THAT DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE ON THE WORLD

CH E F & R E STAU R ATE U R

Consistently my spelling is terrible and I have an inability to remember even some basic adjectives. All of my children now correct my spelling, which is quite amusing, but also quite handy to be honest. I think autocorrect makes me even worse! In secondary school I used to go to what they would call Special Needs most days. And I’ll never forget one of the ways of making us get better was to have us read eight pages of Shakespeare to a full school assembly. It was really, really hard as you’re trying to read, but also trying to speak to the room, then when you look up at any one time there’ll be 30 boys giving you the w***** sign or various other forms of visual abuse. I was kind of fine with it, but it was awkward, or as my daughter would say, well awks.

Having had such a bad relationship with reading, writing and spelling when I was growing up, to now have such a long-term positive relationship with words is a really amazing achievement.

The Bigger Picture Book of Amazing Dyslexics and the Jobs They Do

I’m the bestselling non-fiction author in the UK, despite words feeling like my arch enemy in the past, because really I think it’s all about communication. If you’ve got people to support your weaknesses, then theoretically anything is possible, and working around the bits I’m bad at by having an incredible team around me can help me get my message across in my own way.

I’ve spent 20 years expressing myself through something I love…cooking.

Kathy Iwanczak Forsyth and Kate Power

There’s never really been one person that showed me the light or a route to more self-confidence, I had to learn it myself and be practical. If I come across a problem I try to get around it by being optimistic, you’ve got to see the glass as half full. One of the strengths of being dyslexic is that you realise lots of the accepted structures in society, like examination systems, aren’t suited to everyone, and aren’t necessarily the best way to teach or inspire the masses. When you concentrate on problem solving and try to overcome little challenges and take each day as it comes, you’ll find strength in your own power to evolve and get stuff done. I’m not saying there isn’t a place for brilliant people that can make a difference to your life but don’t forget to believe in yourself too.

Foreword by Paul Smith

Other people can help you find your way but they can’t do it for you. I found my way through food. P H OTO : TA R A F I S H E R

Some early clues to dyslexia

Have your say

Kate Power & Kathy Iwanczak Forsyth

This part of the book is to help you understand what dyslexia means for you, and to help you explain to others how dyslexia affects you and your learning.

Surprising people by the really clever and imaginative things you say

If you think your child might be dyslexic

On the following pages, you will find empty speech bubbles. Tick or cross if you can relate to what’s been said and perhaps talk about how it makes you feel. You will also find, at the bottom of each page, red boxes containing top tips and black boxes with useful website addresses.

Talk to their teacher and the school’s learning support team. Check their eyesight at the optician. Get advice from their family doctor. Find a professional who can assess for dyslexia. Check online for your national dyslexia organisation to get guidance and support. While assessing for dyslexia, check for other learning difficulties, like Asperger syndrome (AS), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyspraxia and dyscalculia, as you can have dyslexia alone or alongside one of these.

dyslexia - activities

Imagine a world without language. Then imagine doing an activity in which the ability to set language aside becomes a distinct advantage – a strength. Imagine a world where you could look without language. In this world, words don’t affect what you see. When you do this activity, words wither away. This activity takes place in a visual world. It is one in which dyslexics and non-dyslexics alike share a common ground. We have a word for being articulate with words: literacy. We have a word for being articulate with numbers: numeracy. But there is no widely accepted word for being articulate with images, which is why we invented the word visualcy when we were thinking about summarizing

Reading and spelling difficulties

Vocabulary knowledge, reading comprehension, structural language difficulties

What skills do children need to start to learn to read?

Let’s play the same-sound game

There are three main foundation skills essential to making a good start in learning to read are as follows:

‘Can you think of some other words that begin with the same sound as “fish”? “f” is for “fish”. Let’s think of some other words that begin with the “f” sound.’

► having good spoken language skills, especially a broad vocabulary ► phonological awareness, which is children’s realization that spoken words are made up of sequences of sounds. The main sets of sounds in words are syllables and phonemes. A syllable is a part of a word that consists of a vowel with consonants on one or both sides; the word ‘eggshell’ has two syllables: ‘egg’ and ‘shell’. Phonemes are the smallest units of speech sounds; the word ‘hat’ has three phonemes: h-a-t ► being able to learn the sounds that each written letter of the alphabet makes, without difficulty (letter knowledge).

“I would strongly recommend any educator, specialist teacher or parent to use this book which introduces the alphabet and the letter-sound correspondences so vital to successful reading development. It also presents the concepts and materials in a fun and topical manner which will hold the attention of the child.” – Dr Kevin Smith, Professional Development Co-ordinator of the Professional Association of Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties (PATOSS)

suspected or diagnosed ADHD at home or in the classroom, and provides further resources and bonus content.

Sometimes I look like I am daydreaming because I am thinking about a new idea.

My friends tell me I am honest which is a good thing to be, but sometimes I can be impulsive and say things that are honest but may be insensitive.

Grown-ups get cross and say I am not listening or paying attention. Sometimes I am thinking about something else when I should be getting ready for school or eating my breakfast.

Grown-ups can help me by suggesting suitable words I could use when I talk to people. I know I have to try really hard to make and keep friends. I don’t really like playing team sports, but I like things like wall climbing, skating, running, robotics and arts and crafts.

“What a warm, lively and fabulous book. An utter delight to support both children with ADHD, and their families.” – Michelle Beckett, Founder, ADHD Action

I have a strong sense of what is fair and what is unfair. I notice everything around me, so I can see when I am being treated differently to others, and it can make me cross. It helps when grown-ups ask me my opinion and let me explain. Sometimes the words come out wrong, so please be patient.

I try and listen really carefully to what grown-ups are saying to me. Sometimes I hear them but sometimes I just hear ‘blah, blah, blah’ and I can’t concentrate. It may be because I am distracted by a buzzing light, or I may notice a bird outside the window or sometimes it may be because my tummy is rumbling because I didn’t finish my breakfast.

ADHD is my superpower because I have a strong sense of what is fair.

The Autism Detective

Investigating What Autism Means to You

Elaine Brownless Illustrated by Mai-Ann Burns

An autism brain interprets the world and other people differently. It processes sensory information and emotions differently, often more intensely.

Autistic people can really struggle too. Especially with communication and social interaction. BLAH, BLAH

“Dear Kit and Scully, your mission is to learn about

BANG!

autism. On this quest you will need to investigate the human brain and learn about diversity.” What do you know about autism? Whether you know a little or a lot, you are invited to explore your understanding of the autism spectrum and discover something new by joining detectives Scully and Kit on their investigation. As Scully and Kit interview six ordinary children, follow the clues and see if you can guess which of them are autistic. This book puts the spotlight on six children that openly talk

LOOK AT ME!

WOOF!

In situations when an autism brain receives too much information to process at once, it causes the person to experience overload, stress and anxiety. An autism brain can be capable of incredible levels of attention and perceive details that others miss. There are scientists, engineers, designers, artists, writers, musicians, teachers, parents and more who are on something called the autism spectrum.

One very important job of the brain is to filter and organize the incoming information that our senses receive. Our brain then decides what information we can ignore and what we should pay attention to. An autism brain can find this process difficult.

Hang on, I’m going to look up the autism spectrum. Autism sounds really interesting so far but there’s a lot to understand.

Autism was first officially identified and given its name in 1943 by a doctor named Leo Kanner. It was very poorly understood at the time and surprisingly there is still quite a lot of confusion, disagreement and misunderstanding. “Elaine has used her two hats - being a mum of an autistic child and a specialist ASD teacher - wonderfully, to create this original and fun book for children to learn about neurodiversity and Autism, while they embark on a mystery-solving detective adventure!” – Dr Glòria Durà-Vilà, NHS and Private Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, author of My Autism Book, The Amazing Autistic Brain and Me and my PDA.

I’ve been doing some reading, Kit. Listen to this. An autism brain can be really good at noticing details and patterns, likes predictability and is brilliant at focussing on things of interest. An autism brain can be especially good at locking attention onto things of high interest and less good at pulling that attention away. People on the spectrum may find it incredibly difficult to concentrate on things they find boring but often become experts in things they find interesting. 22

Ah, autistic people love routine! They might have fewer hobbies because they’re spending heaps of time doing the things that they enjoy the most.

An autism brain can struggle to think flexibly and problem-solve in new situations and find it hard to adjust when routines are broken. Sometimes autistic people have routines that are not obvious or necessary to others but they help the person to feel organized, in control and calm. 23

experience OCD and are waiting for therapy, or to continue managing their obsessions and compulsions after therapy.

At other times you will see OCD grow in size. He stops looking harmless and becomes threatening and scary.

The word ‘cognitive’ is just another word for ‘thinking’. CBT looks at the relationships between your thoughts, feelings and behaviour.

12–18 years * £16.99

These are both tricks that OCD uses to get you to do what he wants.

Sometimes OCD tries to scare you into doing things. At other times he will try to persuade you to do what he says by pretending that he is protecting you.

CBT has been shown to help young children, teenagers and adults. These ideas might seem strange and they involve hard work but if you practise them they work very well.

* Dec 2019 * PB * 25 B&W cartoons

Throughout this book, you will notice that sometimes OCD looks quite small and harmless. You might think he looks innocent or maybe even cute.

Researchers and therapists have spent a great deal of time studying OCD and have developed a type of therapy called Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT for short).

The ACT Workbook for Teens with OCD Unhook Yourself and Live Life to the Full

Patricia Zurita Ona, Psy.D.

Sometimes OCD tricks people into believing that they are the only ones who experience uninvited thoughts. OCD might tell you that you must be bad or crazy for having these thoughts.

You might be wondering where OCD comes from. The answer is that, at the moment, we don’t know exactly what causes OCD. However, we know that OCD is not a new problem – it has been around for a very long time. We also know that OCD tends to run in families so there might be someone else in your family who has OCD. People often feel ashamed about having OCD so a relative could have OCD and might not have told you about it.

WHAT IF I PRESSED THE ALARM BUTTON?

Illustrated by Louise Gardner Foreword by Stuart Ralph

YOU PROBABLY FORGOT TO LOCK THE PYRAMID. WHAT IF THE SNAKES GET OUT?

This workbook is the first to use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for teens aged 12–18 struggling with OCD. It helps guide the reader to overcome compulsive and avoidant behaviours in everyday situations, with top tips, examples of other teens’ experiences and lots of fun and practical activities throughout.

In fact, most of us have thoughts that we find unpleasant or disgusting. The difference is being able to see these thoughts for what they are – just ‘nonsense’ thoughts that don’t need to be taken seriously. 37

Something Bad Happened

Before we talk specifically about what happened, there’s something important you need to know: Big bad things, like the thing that recently happened, are rare.

Scary words and dramatic pictures have a way of getting stuck in our brains.

That’s good. But it also means we don’t get much practice dealing with them. That’s why, when something like this happens, everyone talks about it so much.

However, at other times, we need to have other people to help and support us, and to connect to like a daisy chain. You can also build longer chains by adding new

people onto them. Making a new friend, or working with a different person in school, can extend the number of people that you are connected to.

‘To love them, to love them not’ – daisies are often found on lawns, school fields and grassy verges. These simple, white-petalled flowered are both intriguing, and everywhere!

Then write your family’s names onto white stickers and place them on the ‘branches’. This will remind you of all the people who you love, and who love you.

It was Alice, in her Adventures in Wonderland, who was known to like creating daisy chains. Even before her adventures with the White Rabbit began, she was thinking whether ‘the pleasure of making a daisy chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies’. Whilst she considers this, her attention is disrupted when ‘a White Rabbit ran close by her’. It is her decision to follow the rabbit and so we can assume that the daisy chain never even got started!

Do you still love going to the seaside? The power of the waves, the spray of the water, the squawk of the seagulls. I haven’t got an I-Spy book any more, but I have still kept my curiosity! Different creatures need different amounts of sleep depending on what they eat and how safe they feel. But all animals need sleep – sleep is ama-zzzzzzzzzz-ing.

ZZ

Unlike our mobile devices, we don’t have on/off switches. Like other animals, we need to prepare for sleep. This can be by reading a book, being read a story by someone else, or just dimming the lights. Sleep is a habit and like other habits we have, some of them are good and some of them are not so good. What are your sleep habits like? How well do you prepare yourself for sleep, without the bright light of TV or a tablet computer shining in your eyes?

Which creature’s sleep patterns would you like? Be a giraffe, as they can even sleep standing up! They can do this by locking their knees, and this allows them to run away quickly when they need to escape from predators – after all, it’s a long way from lying down to getting up. Sometimes, they have to risk lying down and giving their necks and their bodies a rest – deep sleep is good.

How much sleep do you get a night?

Why Not Try This? Make a Zzz chart! Record how many Zs you get each night for a whole week.

A koala then? Thanks to eating all that eucalyptus, they need around 15 hours of sleep. Their limited diet has not given them enough energy to do anything else! This long sleep is possible because they can get up high in the trees, safe from predators – soothing sleep is good.

Write down one ‘Z’ for each hour. Following this rule, how many hours has the koala been sleeping for? (By the way – have you spotted the ten Zs (the number of hours that you need to try and get each night) that have been hidden in the other pictures in the book?)

Or maybe like an orangutan (and other apes), who build platforms that are able to support their sizeable weight. This means that they are safe to sleep for longer, and scientists think that this ‘extra sleep’ allowed

A nest is a secure place for birds, bears and bees that allows them to feel comfortable and safe. We all need a home like this – a place where we can recharge ourselves after a busy day at school. It might be your bedroom, it may be the sofa in the sitting room, or possibly the fantasy world of a good book. The Red Arrows

Make positive affirmation keyrings

The Red Arrows are planes that always fly overhead to honour the Queen’s birthday in the United Kingdom.

The words we use inside our head can make us feel confident, strong, powerful and happy, or make us feel bad, down, scared or worried.

But you can imagine that the Red Arrows fly over your head taking the unkind, nasty, unhelpful, critical voices of your friends, family or teachers with them, as those critical voices don’t even touch you – they simply go over your head like the Red Arrows flying on to more exciting places.

But here’s the good news – you can choose to say positive phrases that make you feel like a ‘Can-Do Kid’ quickly and easily. They are called ‘positive affirmations’.

Write some of the unkind things people have said to you and attach them to the Red Arrows so they can take them away from you.

Some people like to carry their favourite affirmations with them on a keyring or bracelet, to help them feel positive when faced with something difficult. Design your own keyring or bracelet to help you remember your favourite affirmations. Now imagine jumping into your Magic Circle of Confidence and being all those things yourself. Spin the confidence up from the tips of your toes to the top of your head.

Here’s a few ideas to get you started: • • • • •

You can pretend to be that confident person anytime you like. 50

The Story of the Trans Women of Color Who Made LGBTQ+ History

Joy Michael Ellison and Teshika Silver Illustrated by Teshika Silver A picture book telling the story of Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson, the transgender women of colour who fought for LGBTQ+ equality. Depicting the events that surrounded the Stonewall Riots, this is a playful introduction to trans identities and LGBTQ+ history for young children.

Sylvia sighed. “Someday girls like us will be able to wear whatever we want. People will call us by the names we choose. They’ll respect that we are women. The cops will leave us alone and no one will go hungry.” “Oh no,” thought Marsha, “that means the cops are coming.” Police could arrest transgender girls for wearing dresses. She grabbed Sylvia’s hand and they ran.

Sylvia and Marsha talked and talked about making life better for themselves and their sisters. Then on June 28, 1969, they took action.

“That’s a man in a dress,” a policeman sneered at Marsha. “Show me your ID or I’ll arrest you.” “Not on my birthday,” said Marsha.

Traditionally women present themselves as feminine and men as masculine, and most people assume that non-binary people are all androgynous/masculine. But thankfully society is a lot more diverse than that, and within all genders, people have so many different ways of expressing themselves. The most important thing in all of this is to express yourself in a way that makes you comfortable. There is no right or wrong way to express yourself, so even if you’re a tomboy or a femme boy or a non-binary person who isn’t androgynous, you’re just as valid. Your expression does not govern who you are as a person. Have a think about what your expression is now, whether you’re comfortable with that or whether you’d like to express yourself differently. What is your ideal way to express yourself via visual means?

We have many inspirations, and one of them is undoubtedly Kate Bornstein and their My New Gender Workbook. In their book, they had a wonderful light-hearted and non-serious quiz that helped you figure out your gender, and we thought we would do something similar with you too. So welcome to the ultimate quiz of finding out your gender! It is not an actual gender quiz though, so do not fret. But it can be fun! It is quite simple – just tick what box feels most appropriate to each question, round up the numbers and calculate your result! A bit like an online quiz, except instead of the computer doing it all for you, you have to do it yourself. Old school, we know.
