Personal Hygiene? What’s that Got to Do with Me?

Pat Crissey

Personal Hygiene? What’s that Got to Do with Me? is a curriculum developed for students with autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, learning and developmental disabilities, designed to help them understand how others perceive their appearance and the social implications of neglecting personal hygiene. Simple factual information is accompanied by humorous cartoons that emphasize how others view someone with poor hygiene. Step-by-step cartoons explain exactly what the student needs to do to ensure good hygiene. Quizzes and activity pages provide numerous opportunities for repetition and reinforcement of the key points. There are also hands-on activities to demonstrate why and how to perform various hygiene tasks. Several social stories are also provided, along with a set of worksheets that help students set up a daily schedule to allow time for completing necessary hygiene tasks.

The Autism-Friendly Guide to Periods

Robyn Steward Changes during puberty, such as the onset of periods, are challenging for girls on the autism spectrum. Written from experience by an autistic woman, this straightforward guide to periods helps the reader to prepare in great detail, from hygiene to pain medication and sensory experiences to mood swings.

“This book is excellent. Robyn has removed the stigmas and made discussion of periods part of growing up. She is to be congratulated on her clarity of thought, put to wonderful use in demystifying everything about periods. The book should be part of educating all young women.”

– Mr Sanjay Vyas MD FRCOG, Consultant Gynaecologist, President British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy

Menstrual cup

These are folded and inserted into your vagina (they open out once inside your vagina). The blood and womb lining falls into the cup which is then removed, emptied and replaced every 8–12 hours (depending on the brand of menstrual cup used).

Period underwear

This is worn like normal underwear. It has several layers of special fabric designed to catch and hold blood and womb lining. It can be worn for a full day, depending on the brand and type, and how much blood you lose (your blood flow).

Panty liner

These are like pads but they are worn when people are now quite sure when their periods are going to start. They can’t be worn for a whole period as they are not very absorbent.

25 D. How to use and empty a menstrual cup

Using a menstrual cup will take some practice. You need to be OK about touching your vagina. Make sure you wash your hands before you start following the instructions on this page.

How to insert a menstrual cup

1. Take your menstrual cup out of its bag (be sure to sterilise it before you use it for the first time – after sterilising you can leave it in its bag).

2. Fold your menstrual cup. There are lots of ways of folding it, but in these instructions I will show you the ‘7 fold’.

3. Take the cup and squeeze it to join the two edges. Fold half of the cup towards the bottom (so it looks like a 7).
