All over the world and throughout history, books have been deemed dangerous and pulled from the shelves of libraries and schools. Even in our present day, state and local governments in the US telegraph to citizens what they’re allowed to read and what they’re not. Teachers and librarians are threatened with lawsuits, firings, public ridicule and threats. Meanwhile, the communities who need stories of hope and courage now more than ever are under threat from those who would choose to diminish their joy, representation, and very existence.
Our team in the US have felt it most strongly but it’s become increasingly clear that this is something that we in the UK will have to contend with as well - for ourselves, and in solidarity with the queer community all over the world. We attend library events, LGBTQIA events, and neurodiversity events. We speak to librarians, teachers, and parents who are so deeply appreciative of our books and those of other presses, but who worry it is becoming more risky to carry them in public libraries, school libraries, and other spaces where people collect to learn about the world and about themselves.
But we won’t sit down. Inspired by the efforts of our colleagues across the Pond, we have been even more driven in our mission to help communities, provide understanding and deliver books people see themselves in. Because in the end, books are the sublime rectangles of humanity’s progress, its past missteps, and its hopeful future. Reading unchains us from ignorance. Reading allows us to grow, to empathise, to understand. Reading delivers truth to power.
So join us as we shout it from the rooftops, from our camera phones, and to anyone who will listen. Our greatest weapon against tyranny and control is a book. The pen is indeed far mightier than the sword. And when we open a book up, we rise.
Share your favorite book—banned, attacked, or otherwise—for people with diverse backgrounds of any age on social media and tell us why you love it! (It certainly does not need to be a JKP book, but we won’t complain if it is!)
Talk about why a book like this is so important to identity, liberty, and progress.
