Stand Up to OCD!

A CBT Self-Help Guide and Workbook for Teens Kelly Wood and Douglas Fletcher This illustrated, full colour CBT self-help book and workbook gives teens a deeper understanding of how OCD works. It follows the stories of three teens who have different types of OCD, from the development of their difficulties through to seeking help. The book includes a workbook to help the reader carry out their own CBT.

The word ‘cognitive’ is just another word for ‘thinking’. CBT looks at the relationships between your thoughts, feelings and behaviour.

12 Researchers and therapists have spent a great deal of time studying OCD and have developed a type of therapy called Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT for short).

CBT has been shown to help young children, teenagers and adults. These ideas might seem strange and they involve hard work but if you practise them they work very well. Throughout this book, you will notice that sometimes

OCD looks quite small and harmless. You might think he looks innocent or maybe even cute.

At other times you will see OCD grow in size. He stops looking harmless and becomes threatening and scary.

These are both tricks that OCD uses to get you to do what he wants.

Sometimes OCD tries to scare you into doing things. At other times he will try to persuade you to do what he says by pretending that he is protecting you.

Sometimes OCD tricks people into believing that they are the only ones who experience uninvited thoughts. OCD might tell you that you must be bad or crazy for having these thoughts.

WHAT IF I PRESSED THE ALARM BUTTON? You might be wondering where OCD comes from. The answer is that, at the moment, we don’t know exactly what causes OCD. However, we know that OCD is not a new problem – it has been around for a very long time.

We also know that OCD tends to run in families so there might be someone else in your family who has OCD. People often feel ashamed about having OCD so a relative could have OCD and might not have told you about it.

YOU PROBABLY FORGOT TO LOCK THE PYRAMID. WHAT IF THE SNAKES GET OUT?

In fact, most of us have thoughts that we find unpleasant or disgusting. The difference is being able to see these thoughts for what they are – just ‘nonsense’ thoughts that don’t need to be taken seriously.

Something Bad Happened

Before we talk specifically about what happened, there’s something important you need to know:

Big bad things, like the thing that recently happened, are rare.

That’s good.

But it also means we don’t get much practice dealing with them. That’s why, when something like this happens, everyone talks about it so much.

Something Bad Happened

Scary words and dramatic pictures have a way of getting stuck in our brains.

Unless you are reading a news source specifically geared toward children, it is better to get information from the adults who care about you, rather than from the computer, radio, or TV.

Location, Location, Location

And if the bad thing was close-by, you can think about all the protections that were quickly put in place to keep nearby people safe, because that is exactly what happens.

When something bad happens, good people from all around the world quickly join together to help the people who were directly affected by what happened, and to help those who are nearby stay safe.

So, whether you live nearby or far away, many, many people are working to keep you safe.

That was far away
