Welcome to The Museum Plays, a unique collaboration that marks a significant moment for both the Rubell Museum and Miami New Drama. As you embark on this experiential journey with us, I want to express my profound excitement and gratitude for your presence and participation.

The Rubell Museum, renowned for its unparalleled collection of contemporary art in America, is the ideal setting for this creative fusion. It is a dynamic space that doesn’t look at the past but is actively engaged with the present and future, showcasing artists who address the most pressing issues of our time. This ethos aligns perfectly with Miami New Drama’s mission to shape the future of American theater.

In The Museum Plays, we’ve embarked on an ambitious project, pairing some of the nation’s most exhilarating playwrights with world-class artists from the Rubell Museum’s collection. These playwrights have created unique theatrical pieces, each deeply connected to and inspired by the art they accompany, creating a truly immersive experience.

My heartfelt thanks go to the Rubell family and the museum’s leadership and staff for their openness, generosity, and readiness to embark on this experimental journey with us. Their invaluable support has been key to bringing The Museum Plays to life.

This initiative is more than a series of performances; it’s a fusion of two distinct art forms that typically stand apart. By uniting them, we’re not just exploring new artistic territories but also inviting our audience into this innovative dialogue. This experiment stands as a testament to the transformative power of collaboration and innovation in the arts, and I hope it sparks further interdisciplinary dialogues and partnerships.

Thank you for joining us on this adventure. Let’s embrace the limitless possibilities that arise when we come together in the spirit of artistic innovation.

THE RUBELL

MUSEUM

Shortly after Mera and Don Rubell married in 1964, they started visiting artists’ studios in New York and collecting art. Their son, Jason Rubell, joined them in 1982 in building the collection, creating exhibitions,

and developing the museums, reflecting the multigenerational family passion for discovering, engaging, and championing many of today’s most compelling artists. The Rubell Museum opened in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood in December 2019. Originally launched in Miami in 1993 as the Rubell Family Collection, the institution was renamed the Rubell Museum to emphasize its public mission and expanded access for audiences. Transformed from six interconnected industrial buildings by Selldorf Architects, the Museum experience unfolds on a single level, with 36 galleries, a flexible performance space, an extensive research library, a bookstore, and an indoor-outdoor Basque restaurant LEKU, that opens onto a courtyard garden filled with native plants. The Rubell Museum’s collection is distinguished by its unprecedented range and depth that has enabled the Museum to organize over 50 exhibitions during the last three decades drawn entirely from its holdings in painting, sculpture, photography, video, and installation. These have included such groundbreaking and diverse exhibitions as Against All Odds: Keith Haring (2005), Red Eye: Los Angeles Artists (2006), 30 Americans (2008), Purvis Young (2018), and Yayoi Kusama (2020) many of which have toured to numerous museums across the country. In October 2022, the Rubell Family opened a second museum dedicated exclusively to contemporary art in Washington, D.C., bringing their extensive collection of over 7,700 contemporary artworks to new audiences from across the country and around the world.
