In the grand tapestry of American cities, Miami stands out for its youthfulness and vibrancy. Our city, merely 127 years young, and Miami Beach, at 109, are infants compared to the centuries-old stories of New York, Detroit, and Los Angeles. What truly sets Miami apart, however, is not just its age but its ever-changing, cosmopolitan spirit. With 58% of Miamians born abroad, our city is a mosaic of cultures, dreams, and aspirations, welcoming thousands each year—whether escaping turmoil from distant lands or seeking refuge from the climates and taxes of other states. Miami, in its essence, is a beacon of the future, always looking ahead with new highrises, racetracks, museums, and stadiums. Yet, amidst this forward momentum, Miami carries a hidden past.

To truly grasp the soul of Miami, one must delve into its obscured history. Unlike other cities where history is commemorated and visible, Miami's stories lie beneath the surface. It's startling to realize there are no markers to remind us that, until 1964, our community lived segregated, including the very theater you sit in today. Our history is concealed, yet understanding it is crucial to appreciating the city's full narrative.

Enter Nicholas Griffin, with his brilliant book "The Year of Dangerous Days," a work so compelling it lingered with me long after the last page. Griffin's vivid recounting of Miami's tumultuous journey, particularly around the McDuffie riots of 1980—the then-largest racial riots in the U.S.—was both enlightening and haunting. This book did more than just recount events; it unveiled the fault lines upon which our city is built. I reached out to Nick and charmed my way into convincing him to adapt his book into a play. "But I am not a playwright, Michel," he protested. Today, I invite all of you as Nick not only proved himself wrong; he has become not just a playwright, but a fantastic one. And I have a feeling this will not be the only play we produce from him.

In recent years, Miami has witnessed an unprecedented growth in arts and culture, transforming into one of the fastest-growing cities in America. Yet, as we embrace this renaissance, it's crucial to remember the complexities of our past. This play is an invitation to explore the events that have shaped our community. Through understanding our history, we can forge a more inclusive and unified Miami for all who call it home. Let's honor the stories of our past, celebrate the diversity of our present, and shape the future of our city together.

Welcome to Miami, where every day is an opportunity to rediscover who we are and who we aspire to be.
