It's extremely rare, if not unprecedented, for a theatre company to produce two new plays by the same playwright in the same season, let alone one who is mostly unproduced. But at the same time, it’s also extraordinarily rare to find a playwright as innovative and compelling as Harley Elias.
It has been a delight for me to work with Harley and Billy Corben in creating Lincoln Road Hustle (which is still running at this very moment outside the theatre on Lincoln Road!). And it has been a privilege to collaborate with Harley on bringing to life his remarkable play, Bad Dog.
Bad Dog is truly unlike any play I’ve encountered before. It challenges me as I try to wrap my head and heart around something so original, so audacious, and so dangerous. At first, it might seem traditional and straightforward, only to take you on the wildest ride with unexpected twists and turns while at the same time delving deeply into a profound meditation on art and identity.
This production would have been impossible without the exceptional cast of actors who helped Harley and me uncover the complexities of this piece. Mia, Liba, Kristal, and Caleb are an inspiring ensemble in the rehearsal room, and it’s always a privilege to work with world-class designers who bring the vision to life with such creativity and precision.
Lastly, I want to thank my mentor and friend Gregory Mosher for introducing me to Harley during the darkest days of the pandemic. I recently went back to see the first email I sent to Harley after reading one of his plays. It reads: “You have a voice, a vision, a style, a point of view. In short, you are the real deal.” Four years of extraordinary collaboration later, I believe more than ever that Harley is indeed the real deal, and I can't wait to see the extraordinary impact he will make in the theatre field and beyond.
