SYNOPSIS
PAPÁ CUATRO IS A WORLD-PREMIERE MUSICAL shining a light over a generation of notable Venezuelan musicians who left their country hoping for a better future, taking with them centuries of tradition and the festive sound of a small, iconic instrument: El cuatro.
The familiar tones of this instrument have evolved and transformed through centuries, seeing its origins in the Spanish renaissance, and its evolution in the clash of Spanish culture with African and Indigenous traditions in the Americas. In Papá Cuatro, the journey of the Cuatro is compared to that of more than six million Venezuelans who everyday blend-in with new cultures around the world.
The Venezuelan diaspora is learning to see the world, and their own identity with new eyes. They are still under re-construction, but starting to feel settled. This reunion of musicians who were once part of a booming scene of live entertainment in Venezuela will showcase their talents while exposing real-life stories to the audience in a setting that exists somewhere in-between a Venezuelan house party, a reality show, and a play. The audience will experience a mix of well known festive songs with anecdotes about the migratory experience. Including couch surfing for endless months, visiting Disneyland after growing up with ex-communist parents, trying Uber driving as the main source of income, and feeling persecuted by their government while winning Grammys and being away from home.
In Papá Cuatro, elements of reality TV, journalism, and documentary come together to celebrate Venezuelan music and traditions, taking us through an epic journey from the Spanish Renaissance, through the plains of Latin America, into the post-covid world. The cast includes award winning actress and singer Mariaca Semprún (Piaf, La Lupe, Latin Grammy 2020); cuatro virtuoso Miguel Siso (Latin Grammy 2018); “iconic” harpist and Latin Grammy winner, Eduardo Betancourt; the Queen of Bandola and cultural activist Mafer Bandola (LADAMA); and prodigious drummer Adolfo Hererra (Latin Grammy Nominee).

WHAT HAPPENS TO A COMMUNITY THAT IS FORCED TO LEAVE ITS COUNTRY AND WITH IT, TAKE ITS CULTURE AND TRADITIONS? If any community knows a thing or two about this question, it is ours, Miami. This city has become the world capital of most Latin American exile communities for well over half a century. Cubans migrants have paved the way but for decades we have also had an influx of Haitians, Argentinians, Brazilians, Colombian, and now, in the last decade and a half, a new exile community has been leaving its mark; Venezuelans. With over 7 million exiled around the world, South Florida has become one of the largest hubs of the Venezuelan diaspora.
Papá Cuatro invites us to reflect on that experience, and on many other questions about the spirit, the nostalgia, and ultimately the resilience of a community. It explores the universal themes of the immigrant experience by focusing on the evolution of a single musical instrument; the folkloric four string guitar called: El Cuatro.
Today you will encounter five world class musicians whose stories and music are a testament of the human spirit. They are led by my dear friend (and former high school theatre rival in the mid 90’s of Caracas) Juan Souki, a usual suspect for us at Miami New Drama whose last show with us Viva la Parranda! created one of the most spectacular experiences to ever take place on the stage at The Colony Theatre. His creativity, sensibility and love for folkloric culture has been an extraordinary gift for the Venezuelan exile community and for anyone with a heartbeat who likes to go on incredible theatrical journeys.
