OUR STRATEGY 2024 – 2026

Ensuring the best end of life care for everyone in our island community

“I’ll never forget the care and compassion the team gave my family – it means the world to me.”
Fiona, patient’s daughter

OUR STRATEGY

Our new three-year strategy sets out a clear and exciting direction for your Hospice.

Each and every day we touch the lives of islanders, and, as Fiona tells us, our impact is vital. Our strategy is focused on ensuring that the critical role we play in the community and the difference we make today, continues now and long into the future.

Over the next three years, we are particularly focused on extending our reach by developing our services and building upon existing collaborative partnerships across the healthcare and charity sectors. We know that demand for our services will increase - with an ageing population in Jersey, it’s essential islanders receive dignified, high quality, and individualised end of life care; and their loved ones are supported both before and after their death.

Our new strategy will ensure that we are best placed to meet this increasing demand, and that we are directly aligned with the Island’s first Palliative and End of Life Care Strategy - which was launched in October 2023 and was led by Hospice and Health and Community Services. Hospice and our partners will strive to ensure all islanders will have access and informed choice to the right care, by the right person, at the right time, and in the right place.

To meet the growing need, we must secure more income from our fundraising and retail, and from the Government of Jersey, to achieve financial sustainability. This income is becoming increasingly harder to secure. Our ambitions for patients and their families, in turn affects our people – both colleagues and volunteers – and we must continue to invest in their development.

OUR VISION, MISSION AND VALUES

Our Vision and Mission provide the foundation of our strategy; and our values are at the heart of everything our colleagues and volunteers do - they underpin what we do, and how we do it.

DELIVERING OUR STRATEGY

Why our strategy is important

As the needs of our island community continue to change and grow, we are committed to adapting, improving, and innovating our services to deliver consistently outstanding care. It is important that we share this strategy with our community and partners, and that we use it to guide the decisions we make; and deliver on our commitments each year.

We have identified five strategic priorities that provide us with a roadmap to deliver our Vision.

Extending our reach across our community

Growing and developing our people to be the best that they can be

Creating a specialist centre for best practice and learning

Achieving financial sustainability to enable us to develop the right services for the future needs of islanders

Enhancing islanders’ awareness and understanding about the work of their Hospice

“David was given the most tender loving care and was kept comfortable and pain free, which is all he ever wanted.”
Carole, patient’s wife

• Work with partners within the End of Life Care Partnership to agree and deliver an enhanced model of care services for patients with end of life care needs in the community.

• Work with Government and other providers to understand the island-wide needs of children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions, and their families.

• Develop a research group to enhance the skills of our workforce in order to benefit those in our care.

Increase awareness and engagement with islanders about the work of their Hospice

• Use storytelling in our communications, to demonstrate both the need and positive impact of supporting Hospice.

• Provide superb stewardship to all supporters.

• Break down the barriers that exist around talking about death and dying.

Deliver Hospice’s strategy through our people

WE WILL:

• Ensure we have the right people in the right roles with the relevant level of skills and knowledge required today and for the future.

• Develop and roll out recruitment strategies and campaigns that best fit the vacancies for which we are hiring.

• Develop and implement a Wellbeing strategy with the facilitation of a regular calendar of events.

• Continue to implement the Volunteer strategy, so our volunteers feel valued in their roles and see the impact of their gift of time.

Financial and environmental sustainability

WE WILL:

• Grow existing income generation activities and invest in innovative, diversified, and sustainable sources of income.

• Continue to drive cost efficiency and ensure the best use of our resources, delivering value for money to our supporters and partner organisations.

• Develop and implement a robust financial plan to achieve financial sustainability and enable Hospice to develop and increase the capacity of our services to meet the needs of the island in the future.

• Meaningfully reduce the negative impact Hospice has on the environment.

Our new strategy sets out a bold vision for the future of your Hospice. Created by the community, for the community, more than 41 years ago, our role in the heart of Jersey’s community has never been more crucial. We must ensure all islanders needing support receive it, and they have choice and control on their end of life journey. We know we will face challenges along the way, especially financial - with rising costs on an almost daily basis; but we can look forward with optimism. We have an incredible and committed team of Hospice volunteers and colleagues, and we have a unique role in the lives of islanders.
