Following the planned retirement of our current Chief Executive, Jersey Hospice Care is seeking a new Chief Executive to lead the charity as it delivers, transforms, and sustains outstanding specialist palliative care for Islanders and their loved ones at Hospice and in the community.
LOCATION: JERSEY
REMUNERATION PACKAGE: COMPETITIVE SALARY TOGETHER WITH ATTRACTIVE BENEFITS
Dear Candidate,
Thank you for your interest in Jersey Hospice Care. We hope this pack provides all the information you need about our charity and the exciting plans we have for the future.
We are proud of everything we have achieved since we were founded by the community, for the community, in 1982. From our early beginnings in a twobedroom house in Grouville to our stunning current home at Clarkson House overlooking the beautiful bay of St Aubin, we have always been focussed on helping our patients and their loved ones to live life to the full.
Since we extended our remit in 2016 to all diagnoses, we now care for around 800 patients and their loved ones each year, at Hospice and in the community – in the hospital, at home, or in other residential settings. We also work closely with other healthcare providers on the Island providing education and training to ensure that all those facing the end of their lives, together with their families, receive the best possible palliative care when they need it and where they want to receive it.
Our reputation for the highest quality care on island is second to none.
To continue to provide this high-quality service, and to secure it for the future, we recognise that our priority over the coming years must be to ensure our financial sustainability while building accountable partnerships with other healthcare providers. Having taken the lead to launch Jersey’s first ever Palliative and End-of-Life Care Strategy in 2023, and in combination with our commitment to put “patients first”, Jersey Hospice Care is firmly on track to promote the necessary changes and build the essential partnerships that we will need in the future.
To achieve this, we will require the continued support of our community who are so generous with their time and their donations. From community fundraising events to volunteering in our shops, we simply couldn’t do what we do without the volunteers and supporters who share our passion to care. With their continued support and that of Government of Jersey, we are confident that we will meet the challenges ahead, whether financial or otherwise.
Our current Chief Executive, Mike Palfreman, has led the charity through significant change and challenge since 2021. His decision to retire in summer 2025 leads us to seek a passionate, experienced and committed professional to succeed him.
This is an exciting time to be joining the team at Hospice. If you believe that you are able to provide the authentic and collaborative leadership that we are seeking, as we continue to deliver outstanding care to all who need our support, then we would like to hear from you.
If you would like an informal chat about the role, please do contact me or Mike on the emails listed towards the end of this document.
Best wishes,
Goetz Eggelhoefer Chair of Trustees
Jersey Hospice Care occupies a unique position within the island’s healthcare system as the sole provider of palliative care to all islanders.
As is the case among many of the UK’s hospices, Jersey Hospice Care faces increased pressure on its resources as the population of Jersey ages and as patients live longer and present with complex co-morbidities.
As we look to 2025 and beyond, it is clear that we will face increased demand from patients to deliver palliative care in the home and to make it possible for patients to die at home. We are committed to ensuring that patients live a full life for as long as possible and to die in a manner and in a place of their choosing.
Moreover, as the Right to Die movement gains popular acceptance, it has never been more important for Jersey to maintain a viable palliative care service that offers our islanders a clear alternative. We will continue to make that case forcefully in our discussions with local politicians.
Our new three-year strategy for 2024 to 2026 is based upon five strategic priorities.
1
Extending our reach across our community.
4
Growing and developing our people to be the best they can be.
2
Creating a specialist centre for best practice and learning.
3
Enhancing islanders’ awareness and understanding about the work of their Hospice.
5
Achieving financial sustainability to enable us to develop the right services for the future needs of islanders.
£7.8 million annual budget
370 volunteers
797 islanders received care throughout 2023
91 employees
We may be looking for you.

You are passionate about delivering outstanding palliative care to anyone with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition and providing support to those close to them.
You will have a proven track record of developing new and existing income sources, along with demonstrable commercial acumen and financial insight.
You will be a strategic leader with excellent interpersonal skills, able to build and nurture relationships with a variety of key stakeholders, develop our team of dedicated staff and volunteers and maintain the high profile that Jersey Hospice has within the island community.
You will be, or will become, a full-time resident of Jersey.
If you recognise these qualities in yourself, then we would urge you to apply for the role of Chief Executive.
That anyone with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition - and those close to them - have equal access to the best palliative care and support, when and where they need it.

“Will chose to die at Hospice. I saw him benefit from the ultimate medical attention in terms of pain management and the sensitivity towards mine and our family’s needs. In the emotion of the situation, it is also easy to overlook the comfort of the In Patient Unit, from the courtesy of the team to the excellent food and overnight accommodation, for which I am also extremely grateful.
My husband finally passed away holding my hand, thanks to the efforts of your team. Following Will’s death, I found your bereavement counselling service extremely beneficial and while the last year has been the most difficult period of my entire life, it could have been so much worse without the support of Jersey Hospice Care.”
