How your Hospice made a difference

“You matter because you are you, and you matter to the end of your life. We will do all we can not only to help you die peacefully, but also to live until you die.”
Dame Cicely Saunders Founder

Welcome

Jersey Hospice Care is an independent charity, and the island’s only hospice. We are here for anyone with a life-limiting condition, or who is approaching the end of life, to help them live life to the full and receive the specialist palliative care they need.

All of our services are available free of charge to patients and their families and loved ones. We recognise and respect that each person is unique and aim to help them to make the most of what time is left. Ultimately, to help each person live life to the full.

Throughout 2023 we cared for 797 patients and their loved ones, at Hospice and in the community. This care can be provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week on our 12-bed In Patient Unit. Alternatively, our Specialist Palliative Care Team can provide care at home or in the communityat other residential settings or the hospital. We also offer confidential emotional and bereavement counselling, regardless of the nature of the bereavement and how long ago it happened.

We work closely with other healthcare providers on the

island providing education and training in order to ensure that all those living on island with a life-limiting condition receive the best possible palliative care when they need it and where they want to receive it.

In October 2023, the End-ofLife Care Partnership led by Jersey Hospice Care and the Government of Jersey Health & Community Services launched the first Palliative and End-of-Life Care Strategy for Adults in Jersey. This strategy recognises that Jersey’s population is ageing and its aim is to provide the foundation for the island to move strongly and

confidently towards delivering the best possible support for all islanders and their families throughout their end of life journey.

We remain very proud of the quality of our work and the difference that we make to islanders - we are part of an amazing organisation with amazing people. To our colleagues, volunteers, and partners, all of whom have put so much energy and commitment into providing this vital support, we both offer a heartfelt

you.

My mum was diagnosed with cancer late 2007 and spent three weeks at Hospice at the end of her life where she received incredible care. My mum was quite a character - she had a good sense of humour - and I remember the week before mum died, one of the nurses who had got to know her really well arranged for the CD of mum’s favourite singer, Daniel O’Donnell, to be played in her room. While it was playing, she got my dad up and started dancing around the room! I just remember the laughter that mum, dad, and I had that night - seeing this nurse waltzing my dad - and I thought, this is just such a strange scenario because we had such happiness in such a sad time.

My dad also sadly died of cancer in August 2022, after being diagnosed ten months before. Once dad was confirmed as terminal, the Hospice community nurses visited him at home often, and we got to know them quite well. They really helped us at a time when both dad and I needed some emotional help, but also when he needed physical help. They’re very in tune with knowing when the time is near and what the next steps will be, and they explained it with such clarity and

depth to us. My dad was quite apprehensive about going into Hospice - although we had a great experience with mum, but I think he was just very scared of what was going to happen. The community nurses were so kind and gave him lots of information and lots of help and made him realise that it was the best thing for him.

He had the opportunity to stay at home if he wanted to and they could arrange all the necessary beds, the care, and all the nurses

at home. However, he decided in the end he wanted to go to Clarkson House, where he went in August 2022 for his last four days. But for such a sad time, it was actually a very dignified and very peaceful ending for my dad, and I couldn’t have wished for more.

After losing my dad - and both of my parents - I had counselling from the Bereavement Team. I started the counselling sessions about three months after dad died - which was invaluable to me. It gave me the tools I needed to

carry on with everyday life. I think if it wasn’t for the bereavement counselling, I wouldn’t have been able to go back to work, I wouldn’t have been able to continue with day to day life. It also just helped me get on with everyday tasks which felt so difficult at a really hard time. When you lose somebody, it really impacts your entire life. I don’t think I had properly accepted mum dying or processed the grief associated with it. But when dad died, it hit me like a train - and I felt both of their deaths a bit more – and I’m just so grateful to the Bereavement Team for helping me.

I’d just like to say a huge thank you to Jersey Hospice Care for playing such an important role in both my parents’ lives, and my life.“

“I’ll never forget the care and compassion the team gave my familyit means the world to me.”

Over the past year, Karl Fitzpatrick has become synonymous with the Hospice shoe mascot, running both the Hospice 2 Hospice Half Marathon and the London Marathon in the costume.

“My running journey only started in 2022. My friend’s Dad passed away at Jersey Hospice Care and I wanted to show my support. I ran the Hospice 2 Hospice Half Marathon and was offered a place to run for the charity again in the London Marathon in October 2022.

This time, I decided to run it in the Hospice shoe to raise awareness and support for Hospice as well as hopefully putting some smiles on spectators’ faces.”

“I loved it! The shoe was a superstar! So far I have raised about £15,000 and hope to keep going!”

Our 2023 strategic priorities

During 2023, we continued to work on four strategic priorities – clinical excellence, financial sustainability and organisational safety and efficiency, our people, and the development of services for children and young people.

Clinical excellence

Goals

1. To build a model of safe and continuously improving palliative care services.

2. To develop a model of “Hospice without walls”.

3. To secure positive collaborative relationships with other stakeholders.

patients admitted, to the In Patient Unit, a 30% increase from 2022 167

Achievements

The first island-wide Palliative and End-of-Life Care Strategy for Adults in Jersey was launched by the Minister for Health in October 2023.

We focussed on clinical staffing across all areas to ensure operational effectiveness and efficiency.

The Specialist Palliative Care Team and In Patient Unit received positive outcomes from inspections undertaken by the Jersey Care Commission – no areas for improvement were recognised.

We further developed our holistic approach by embedding spiritual care services and assessments, including a successful Interfaith Week held in November 2023.

10

Financial sustainability, safety, and efficiency

Goals

1. To agree and implement plans to regain a balanced budget by 2025.

2. To develop a robust governance structure to ensure safety and efficiency across the organisation.

3. To maximise income generation opportunities.

4. To operate as an efficient, competitive organisation that delivers quality and value for money.

Achievements

We made progress against our financial plan and are on track to regain a balanced budget by 2025 – including negotiating an additional £1.5 million contribution from Health and Community Services.

Solar panels installed to the roof of Clarkson House in spring 2023 provided approximately 10% of the electricity we consumed, helping reduce future energy costs.

145 fire doors at Clarkson House were replaced or refurbished, bringing them in line with current regulations and improving security.

A new Director of Income Generation joined in July 2023 focused on maximising Hospice’s marketing, communications, and fundraising.

11

Our people

Goals

1. To support our staff to ensure commitment, resilience, and job satisfaction, and thus minimise staff turnover.

2. To build a team which is fit for the future.

3. To build a people infrastructure that meets the current and future needs of Hospice and its people.

Achievements

Action plans from the 2022 Employee Survey have progressed well.

The Education Team continued to develop and facilitate training and development opportunities to other local health care providers and hospital staff as well as our internal development programme.

Our culture pathway and CARE values continued to be developed and embedded throughout the organisation.

Implementation of the three-year Volunteer Strategy including a new Compassionate Neighbours scheme for 2024.

12

Development of Children and Young People Services

Goal

To better understand the needs of life-limited children and young people, and those with complex health needs, in Jersey.

Achievements

Looking ahead

Our new three-year strategy for 2024 to 2026 is based upon five strategic priorities.

Extending our reach across our community.

Our service remains on hold as we work with the Government of Jersey and other healthcare providers and charities to assess the needs of children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. We continue to support bereaved children and young people dealing with grief and loss through our experienced counselling and support services, both on a one-to-one and group basis. 1 3 4 5 2

Creating a specialist centre for best practice and learning.

Achieving financial sustainability to enable us to develop services and provide for the needs of islanders in the future.

Growing and developing our people to be the best they can be.

Enhancing islanders’ awareness and understanding about the work of their Hospice.

13

Our finances

All of our services to patients and families remain free of charge. We rely on the support of fundraising by the community, local companies, trusts, and the income from our two retail stores, to enable us to continue caring for patients coming to terms with a life-limiting condition and to support their families and loved ones.
