Gone Fishing I skipped work for a day last month and took the street bike to meet up with Jordan and family at Millersylvania State Park south of Olympia where they where camping for the first time as a family. Jordan camped all the time with us growing up and had received all kinds of camping stuff for wedding presents but Israel had never been camping. So with two little ones, Rowan age 5 and Metztli aged 2, off they went. I dropped in at breakfast time on the second day of the trip to find they had everything figured out. Camp stove up and running, tents all worked, one declared too hot and the other too cold. Sounded just about right to me! After eggs and sausage we got down to business and went exploring nearby Deep Lake for fishing. This was Rowan’s first opportunity to go fishing so I rummaged through our fishing gear that has been growing dust for many years in the garage as the priorities of one life changes over time. We found a pole and the old Zebco kids reel. I put some new line on and brought it over along with one of the shark lunch boxes from Jerrol’s that I converted in to a tackle box for Rowan. She loved putting on the Pautzke salmon eggs and reeling in the line. Absolutely no fish were harmed for this article and in the end Rowan determined that holding the line in your hand to feed the little fish salmon eggs off the end of the dock was the most interesting part of fishing. Metztli, on the other hand, loved running to the edge of the dock to lean over terrifying her Grandpa to point out the fish. All in all a successful adventure and at this time there are plans to camp again!! As Jim Huckabay always says, “go take a kid fishing!” -Rolf P.S.
