Resilience Such a simple word. Defined in my handy Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition 2003 as 1 : the capability of a strained body to recover its size and shape after deformation caused esp. by compressive stress 2 : an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change
______________________________ Wow, what a powerful concept. What a great word to take to heart. I came across RESLIENCE through a speaking engagement I was invited to at CWU sponsored by the Center for Leadership and Community Engagement the first of March. My presentation was entitled Weathering the Storm: A Closer Look at Business Resilience. Strange to write about an event in the past tense when as I write this it hasn't happened….
Our Core Values
#1 - Help “If we help enough people get what they want, we will get what we want.” –Zig Ziglar The people we help are our Clients, Team, Community and Vendors. We help by listening and by being present during our interactions.
As I am preparing the presentation I am stuck by what a powerful concept this is for business and for each of us. One of the first major events I was involved with at Jerrol’s was the eruption of Mount St. Helens. Talk about compressive stress!! One of my fathers ideas at the time was to take the ash and can it to sell later. While everyone around saw nothing but inches deep micro fine corrosive dust that turned to concrete when wet, the only way to start to remove it, he saw opportunity. Resilience isn't always pretty. Looking around at our local forest after all the recent fires you see scars that will last decades, but you also see new trees, wild flowers and mushrooms that would not be there if the fire had not occurred. Resilience is how Jerrol’s has thrived for 71 years as of June 21st this year. There have been so many stresses, so many changes but in the end we have recovered and become better over time by embracing the fact that we must always be More Resilience on page 2
