Back To SchoolAll Ready?

August has arrived and with July in the rear view mirror the students and their families in the county are gearing up for the school year. Part of the rhythm of Jerrol’s has always been the return of students to the classroom.

My granddaughter Rowan is headed to First Grade this year. You can see her excitement as she tried on her first school backpack last year in preparation for Kindergarten! We are fortunate to see hundreds of these smiles on young people when they stop by to get fitted for the coming year. There is something special about the excitement for both the kids and their parents as they prepare for another year of learning and growing.

Lets be honest though, Back to School shopping can be a hectic time with the fair and rodeo activities just days before school starts. We are here to help!

#3 - Diversity

Everyone has something to teach us and to contribute to our business and personal lives.

· People who are different from us are way more interesting than people who are like us.

· We learn new and interesting things from other backgrounds, cultures, life experiences.

· Learning about other people expands our understanding of the world.

· It is the right thing to do.

Jessica and Crystal have prepared a resource center with teacher lists organized by the schools so you can quickly determine what you need for the scholars in your family. Jerrol’s is known for having all the items on the lists from TI-83 graphing calculators to graphing pads.

If you want to get a jump on your BTS shopping, send Jessica an email via Jessica@Jerrols.com with your students teachers information and she will send you their list so you can check through it before you arrive. We want to do everything possible to make sure the BTS season is something to smile about and that your students have what they need for a successful and happy school year.

Our goal is for everyone to be as excited as Rowan is to be headed back to school this year.

Community Close-Up Thorp Fruit Stand

What is synonymous with summer? Fresh fruit! And what better place to get your summertime favorites than the Thorp Fruit and Antique Mall.

In this month’s Community Close-Up, we’re exploring this Kittitas County mainstay, that has been a fixture of our community for more than 60 years.

What we enjoy today, started out in 1944 as a small roadside fruit stand. Of course, there are still fresh fruits and vegetables, but now there are also unique gifts, locally produced specialty food items, and two floors of antiques.

I’m told that cherries are in season right now and I can confidently say that they are absolutely delicious!

August is the best month for fresh fruit at the stand. You’ll find fresh and in season melons, corn, cherries, apricots, apples, squash, plums, pears, peaches, and nectarines.

And here’s some fun trivia: what northwest restaurant gave a peek of the fruit stand during a recent commercial?

You’ll find the answers at the end of this article!

This fourth generation business is part of the heart and soul of our valley, and we are proud to help them with their janitorial and office supply needs.

Trivia answer: Taco Time NW

AdoptA Local Student School Supply Drive

Corrie’s Craft of the Month

Woven Bowls

Woven Bowls! A super easy and relaxing craft.

You can support students in county as the school year rolls around by helping those in need with their school supplies. You can join with us and Court Advocates for Children by stopping by the store and selecting a students list to fill in part or all together. Every contribution makes a difference. If you prefer you can make cash donations online at www.Jerrols.com or call / stop by.

Your donated school supplies will go to Kittitas County Foster Children, APOYO, and the Kittitas County School Districts.

Back to school is a time for children and youth to be excited about their futures and to reconnect with stability, as they look forward to seeing their friends, teachers, and staff, and return to their extra-curricular activities.

The start of a new school year can be hectic for all types of families, but it is especially challenging for children in the child welfare system. For children who grapple with the trauma of being removed from their homes and their social-emotional well-being, or the loss of family members, the work of a CourtAppointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer continues to be essential now more than ever.

It’s no secret that the more prepared a child is for the new school year, the better they can learn and perform in school. The children and youth Court Advocates for Children serve are in need of school supplies as they transition to a new grade or new school.

We will be sending donated school supplies to Kittitas County Foster Children, APOYO, and the Kittitas County School Districts.

The drive will end Friday, August 28th.

Here's what you'll need: Paper plate

Template (at Jerrols)

Scissors

Yarn

Hole lunch (optional)

1. First cut out your template and trace it onto your paper plate. I flipped my plate upside down when I traced it, but either side works. Cut out your paper plate.

2. Bend/fold the flaps on your plate up into the shape of a bowl.

3. Pick your yarn colors (my favorite part) and put a piece of yarn in between any two flaps. Start weaving the yarn in and out of the flaps, round and round and round. If you want to change colors just tie a new color onto your yarn, snip the end off and keep going.

4. Keep weaving, changing colors if you want, until you reach the top of your bowl. My plate was curved at the top so I ended up cutting the curved part off. Tie your yarn around the last flap and cut off the end.

5. You can leave your bowl just as it is or make one last row of stitches around the top. (which is what I did) First you need to hole punch three holes into each flap. One in the middle, then one on each side. Try to evenly space them.

6. Next run your yarn through any hole on the top of your bowl and leave a little tail hanging out. Next sew around the top edge of your bowl using the holes you just punched, just like a sewing card. When you're done going all the way around tie the yarn to the tail you left from your first stitch.

There you have it. A cute/colorful bowl to use for all your treasures. Enjoy!
