A Step in the Sand in the Right Direction Last month the Williams clan made the trek to the Washington Coast for a dose of rest & relaxation. Now that all of us are fully vaccinated it seemed like a good time to get back to some of our normal family routines. Our family has made a week at the beach an annual tradition for close to 30 years. We love Moclips, WA located above Ocean Shores for its beaches that are closed to motorists and the scarcity of people.

Daughter Jordan, her husband Israel and their daughters Rowan (3) and Metztli (10 months) joined us along with my mom and even Codi our Niece showed up. Jordan and her family now live in Puyallup, having moved back to Washington from Williston ND last year. Being so close and not having to pack up their entire family and fly from ND is such a blessing! This was the first time our son Gerik and mom have seen their house, not wishing to visit during CV19.

Rowan found lots of stuff to play with on the beach and always came back covered in sand from head to foot. On one walk she found a tree limb 4x her size that she decided to drag back to the house. Her mom convinced her to leave it by telling her it was a walking stick for a giant and he would miss it if she took it too far.

Gerik spent most of his time in the hot tub. He loves just sitting back and soaking.

Mom had everyone painting rocks and making watercolors, well except for Gerik and I. We’re too cool for that kind of stuff.

Jerrol’s 74th Anniversary I grew up in a family business.

June is our Anniversary Month and you are invited to the party. They were his favorite among all the things we served when we were a soda fountain.

• Don & Irene Williams, our founders and Rolf’s grandparents, started the store in their front yard.

• Neighbors baked pies which Don & Irene Williams purchased and resold.

• The name "Jerrol's" is a combination of Don and Irene's two sons, Jerry and Rolf. They took the first three letters of each name and added an apostrophe S for ownership.

• At one time there was an entire Pet Department with Fish, Birds, Reptiles and small animals.

• Record Store • At one point, Panty Hose was our best selling item.

• There was a Mobil Gas Station in the middle of our East parking lot from the 1950’s to the 1980’s.

Yes this business, Jerrol’s.

By the time I started working here, Jerrol’s had been around for over 30 years. I never thought of Jerrol’s as a privilege. I was taught by my parents that owning a business is a responsibility and an honor.

I believe how I conduct myself and manage Jerrol’s is a direct reflection on my grandparents, Don & Irene Williams, who started Jerrol’s in their front yard in 1947. It was located where the stop sign is now on the corner of our East parking lot at C St & University Way. My conduct also represents my respect for my parents, Jerry and Annette, and all the people just like you who have worked and patronized Jerrol’s over the past 74 years. You have helped create and support the legacy with which I have been entrusted.

This line of thought has served me well. It makes me think through decisions and makes the desire to have world class customer service ingrained in every fiber of my body. How could we do anything less?

When I think of how hard everyone has worked to create Jerrol’s and the sacrifices they made to grow this business that has spanned three generations - and 74 years - I am humble, grateful and honored.

June 21st will be the official 74th anniversary and we will celebrate with our tradition of giving away cups of ice cream to all who stop by.

Elite Scholars Luncheon

Craft of the Month Photo Weaving

Each year, the elite students scholars, as chosen by their schools, in Kittitas, Ellensburg, and Thorp Highs Schools are recognized by their community at the Lower Kittitas County Elite Scholars Luncheon.

This event was started back in the 1970’s by Aileen Barker and company for Ellensburg High School’s top 10% scholars. Jerrol’s became involved a few years later when Dad jumped in to help with planning the event.

It has evolved over the years to recognize more than just the top 10% as determined by grade point to elite scholars from all lower Kittitas Valley High Schools.

This allows students that might not have made the top 10 cut due to taking on more challenging classes or faced unusual obstacles.

In 2020 the luncheon was canceled due to CV19.

This year it will resume although in a different format than in the past to ensure the safety of the students and the community at large. Ellensburg High School has volunteered to host the event, and instead of a luncheon it will be an ice cream party featuring Grandpa Don’s Root Beer Float ice cream named after our founder, Don Williams and made by Winegar's.

In past years each scholar would have been sponsored and escorted by a community member who would pay for their lunch and introduce them to the group. We have decided that would not be a responsible option this year, so instead It will be attended by the scholars, some school staff and a few of our Team members.

Each scholar will be awarded a personalized dictionary donated by Jerrol’s. By my calculations we have awarded more than 800 dictionaries over the years.

We will include a list of all the scholars in next moths edition of the newsletter.

Let's try something simple but unique this month.

Here's what you'll need: Cell phone camera Printer Photo paper Paper cuter Scotch tape 1. Start by taking a selfie...or a photo of someone else. I made sure my background was dark and blank. I also made it rather close up.

2. Print your photo on photo paper twice. Once in color and once in black and white. I made my photo fill the page.

3. Cut one of you photos into half inch horizontal strips leaving one side all connected.

4. Cut your other photo into half inch vertical strips. And then weave it into your first picture. I would cut a strip, weave a strip, cut a strip etc. Otherwise it's easy to get the strips out of order.

5. Helpful hints: you don't have to use all the strips. I ended up not using all the strips on my face because it began to distort my face too much.

6. When your done turn it over and put scotch tape all around the outside edge to secure it.
