I want to express my gratitude to my local Organization JCI Eko for nominating me and giving me the platform to serve as the Executive Vice President Southwest JCI Nigeria and to our National President, JCI Senator Atthairu Bala Abdullahi, for entrusting me with the significant responsibility of overseeing the Southwest – a region comprising 64 Local Organizations.

Looking back the year, it's been a whirlwind of activity. We kicked off with the honor of hosting the National President meeting for JCI Africa and the Middle East, followed by a successful Area Council of Presidents (ACOP) Meeting where we set our goals for the year. The highlight was undoubtedly the record-breaking attendance at the 2023 Southern Conference in April, and in November, we achieved a milestone by hosting the first-ever sustainable, plastic-free event in JCI Nigeria – the Southwest Training Retreat. Personally, it's been a demanding yet greatly impactful experience.

Reflecting on a conversation with my Area Team at the beginning of the year, we collectively committed to creating opportunities for our Local Organizations, equipping them with the tools and motivation to excel.

This vision fuelled our accomplishments in 2023 – fostering partnerships, providing essential project management insights, offering training on financial sustainability, grant writing, and effective report documentation. We harmonized data management and embraced full digitalization of our communication channels.

In addition, witnessing the collaborative efforts of members and stakeholders towards achieving the SEnD (Skills, Engagement, and Development) Agenda has been truly inspiring. Cross-organizational initiatives have flourished, leading to increased opportunities for members to become Global Communicators, Entrepreneurs, Changemakers, and Networkers. These individuals have been driving economic growth and promoting responsible leadership in their local communities. I am confident that in the years ahead, JCI Nigeria will continue to build sustainable enterprises and frameworks, contributing to the success of our society.

As we reflect on the past year, it's crucial to acknowledge the challenges we faced. We encountered an exponential increase in foreign exchange rates, making it near impossible for Local Organizations to meet their dollar dues.

Key sponsors grappled with fatigue due to rising inflation, escalating conference costs, and the financial strain on members attending events.

The necessity for us now is to intensify our efforts in securing sustainable partnerships, amplifying our impact in projects, events, training, and programs.

In hindsight, considering what could have been done better, I wish we had devoted more time during the January ACOP to developing concrete strategies and tactical plans for the year, including implementation steps. Rather than the extensive training that dominated the agenda, a more deliberate focus on accessing grants for Local Organizations could have expanded their reach in creating development opportunities.

Also, Initiating visitations to key stakeholders in our community earlier in the year would have boosted our brand visibility and facilitated membership growth.

While we were tardy in making crucial decisions to revive inactive local organizations in the Southwest, I believe the structures we've now put in place will pave the way for improved performance in 2024.

In conclusion, allow me to express my gratitude, Firstly, to the members of my family, my mentors, partners, and all stakeholders for their confidence and trust. A heartfelt thank you to the Southwest Area Team, Local Presidents, and the Secretariat, led by the Executive Secretary, for their teamwork, invaluable support, and commitment. Special appreciation to JCI Rockcity, JCI Festac, and JCI Oluyole for hosting key events during the year. Lastly, immense thanks to my Executive Assistant, Ibukun Awoseye, for being a steadfast travel companion and advisor.

It has been a privilege and an honor to work closely with each and every one of you throughout the year.

Day 1

The 2023 Southwest Area Council of Presidents (ACOP) Meeting was held in the city of Abeokuta, between the 27th – 29th of January 2023; and it was hosted by JCI Rockcity together with the Southwest Team. The program featured key events, such as PreACOPs training, Strategy Sessions, Stakeholders engagement, Press Conferences, Picnics, Parties and loads of fun. A total of 98 delegates attended the ACOP, comprising of 41 Presidents, 4 Chief Delegates and 53 observers from different Local Organizations.

The first day of the ACOP started with a session facilitated by the Collegiate Vice Chairman for Southwest, Promise Isaac; followed by the Official Opening and Welcome Address by the Executive Vice President, Southwest – Gafar Odubote. The National GLC, JCI Amb. Adeyanju Adeonipekun engaged the participants on the Parliamentary Procedure, educating delegates on the sources and application of order. The National Vice Presidents had a session

with the President to further finetune their key priorities for 2023 including how impacts would be measured during the year. The Executive Secretary of JCI Nigeria, JCI Senator Adeyemo Adeonipekun shared some secretariat updates with the participants and how to lead a successful Local Organization. A panel session moderated by President Idara Michael of JCI Lagos Coral; featured the 2014 EVP Southwest, JCI Senator Precious Adeho and the 2020 EVP JCI Senator Adekunle B. Samson; including the 2023 EVP. They shared with the delegates on how to develop a winning attitude.

The immediate Past Senate Chair; JCI Senator Nneka Itabor facilitated the Strategy Session during the Day 2 of the Southwest ACOPs; on 28th January 2023. she trained the participants on how to set a vision, mission, action plans and strategy to make it works. JCI President, Viktor Ómarsson and JCI Nigeria President; both visited the Southwest ACOPs on Day 2; and they presented the 2023 Southwest conference, and he engaged the participants on the need.

Day 1

Day 1 ended with 69 participants at the event. Our host, JCI Rockcity gave everyone a memorable hospitality night, together with some lovely delicacies.

The Director of Communication took care of the external media including graphics and print. The Editor-In-Chief took photos of the event and also documented key outcomes.

Day 2

A total of 41 Presidents and 4 Chief Delegates attended the 2023 Southwest ACOPS in Abeokuta; together with 53 observers from different Local Organizations; totalling 98 participants. Creating A Strategy that Works: JCI Sen. Nneka Itabor

The immediate Past Senate Chair; JCI Senator Nneka Itabor facilitated the Strategy Session during the Day 2 of the Southwest ACOPs; on 28th January 2023. she trained the participants on how to set a vision, mission, action plans and strategy to make it works.

Below are some key highlights: Understand the Vision of JCI and align it to your Vision: The vision of JCI is to be the foremost global network of Young Leaders. The activities of your Local Organization must gear towards achieving this vision. The Vision Statement states the current and future objectives of an organization; therefore, it must align with your goals, strategic planning, culture and core values.

Create a plan, Allocate resources and Be proactive. Note: Strategy tells you how you will achieve that goal.

Strategy vs Tactics: Strategy and tactics both answer “how” you will achieve your goal. However, strategy is how generally to achieve the goal, and tactics are how specifically to achieve your goal.

How to Create a Strategy that works: is by doing the following: 1) First, Understand your Organization and Environment: By carrying out SWOT Analysis, the resources at your disposal and your vision

Developing the Winning Attitude: Panel Session

On Saturday, January 28th, the Southwest Area Council of Presidents Session (ACOPS) held in Continental Suites, Ibara, Abeokuta saw a panel discussion focused on “Developing the Winning Attitude”. It featured the 2014 JCI Nigeria Southwest EVP, JCI Senator Precious Adeho, the 2020 EVP JCI Senator Adekunle Babatunde Samson, and the 2023 EVP Gafar Odubote. The event was moderated by the 2023 President of JCI Lagos Coral, JCIN Amb. Idara Michael.

The panellists discussed how to cultivate a mindset of success, determination and resilience necessary for leaders to overcome the challenges that come with the changing dynamics of their industry.

"Success has a lot of moving parts," said the 2020 Southwest EVP, JCI Senator Adekunle B. Samson.

"If leaders are to succeed over time, they'll need to have a resilient mindset and also a sense of determination."

According to JCI Senator Precious Adeho, 2014 Southwest EVP, “Desire is what drives success.

Leaders have an innate desire for success that needs to be reignited if they are going to be successful.” JCI Senator Adekunle agrees that success is found in the pursuit of it. “Success is not achieved by chasing after it; rather, success becomes your pursuit as long as you are pursuing something greater than what you have already accomplished,” He said.

The panelists narrated stories of how they were able to navigate challenging times during their tenure as Executive Vice President.

2023 Southern Conference EVP Welcome Speech

As we come together today, with the theme ‘Now and the Future: Youth Involvement and Action for Sustainable Development’, I would like to mention three key goals we want to use this conference to achieve: First, to engage key stakeholders and deliberate on ways youth can be actively involved in achieving sustainable development in our society.

Second, to equip young people and delegates with tools and resources through the conference training, to become Global Communicators, Entrepreneurs, Changemakers and Networkers; and

Excellencies, Ladies, and Gentlemen, welcome to the 2023 Southern Conference of Junior Chamber International (JCI), Nigeria tagged "Eko Akete". It is a great honour to have you all here today and we are extremely delighted to have you join us for this event.

First, may I thank each of our speakers and dignitaries for taking part in this conference – the quality and calibre of the training faculty this year is outstanding. I am particularly pleased to welcome delegates from all over JCI Nigeria, delegates from other countries, partners and stakeholders who have graciously supported us throughout the planning process of this event. On behalf of the Southwest Team and the Conference Organizing Committee, I would like to express our sincere gratitude for your presence at this conference as well as for your generous contributions that made it possible.

This is the 55th edition of this annual event in Nigeria, before 2017; the conference was held separately organized between Southwest (Area A Conference) and the SouthSouth (Area B Conference) until its amalgamation, thereby giving the conference the name “JCI Nigeria Southern Conference”. JCI Nigeria Southern Conference has always been the biggest youth regional conference in Nigeria that brings together students, business owners, creatives, and professionals from all over the country around a central theme. It is an avenue for culture-mix, knowledge sharing and human capacity development along different lines of interest.

At JCI, we believe that young people have a vital role to play in addressing global challenges and creating a more sustainable world. By involving youth in decision-making processes, we can ensure that their voices are heard, their ideas are considered, and their actions are supported. This is especially important given the impact of rapidly changing leadership dynamics, which our world is currently facing.

Third, to highlight the many advantages of being a part of Junior Chambers International. By joining JCI, young people can develop their leadership skills, gain access to a global network of like-minded individuals, and have the opportunity to create positive change in their communities.

Here at JCI, our major assignment is to develop young leaders for a changing world, and we are ready to collaborate with everyone here to achieve this.

Therefore, I encourage all our delegates to participate fully in this conference. From the opening ceremony to the closing ceremony, every single competition, morning show, training and panel session was planned with YOU in mind. Please take advantage of the many offerings that this conference provides.

Event Overview

The JCI Nigeria Southern Conference is a gathering of students, business owners, creatives and professionals from all over the country around a central theme. It is an avenue for culture-mix, knowledge sharing and human capacity development along different lines of interest. It is also an opportunity to learn in a relaxing atmosphere as young people engage in profitable activities and impactful opportunities for personal and career life.

The 2023 edition was hosted by JCI FESTAC from April 27th – 30th 2023 in the City of Excellence, Lagos State under the directorship of JCI Amb. Bukola Agbaje. The event took place at the exquisite Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja; themed: ‘Now and the Future: Youth Involvement and Action for Sustainable Development.’ The conference Director The Conference had a total number of registered delegates – 1,025: which was the highest recorded in the history of the event. These delegates were a broad demographics of young people from an age range of 18 to 40 and an added population of older alumni. The conference was a perfect representation of Nigeria with representative members from across the different regions and geo-political zones that make up Nigeria.

This forms the basis of the UNITY we preach and promote and a core part to the purpose of this conference. At JCI Nigeria Events, is a program of the conference titled the JCI Morning Show. This program kick-starts each day of JCI conferences, where the delegates will listen to amazing speakers and learn variety of best practices from JCI members and experts from our partners organization. The JCI Morning Show at the 2023 Southern Conference hosted guests, such as: Folagade Banks – a content creator; Oluwatosin Ajibade – Olori Supergirl; Titi Oshodi – SSA Lagos State Govt.; Adekunle Olapade – Ayisat Agbaje; Enioluwa Adeoluwa, JCI Sen Paschal Dike – 2016 JCI President, Abimbola Okoya – the Immediate Past President of Nigeria-Britain Association (N-BA) and Mrs Sarah Boulos – Founder of the Nigerian Society for the Performing Arts.

The Opening Ceremony was themed: “Eko 70’s” – a traditional retro themed vibes to reflect Lagos in the seventies. The female adorned the ‘Oleku’ style while the male dressed graciously in ‘Dandogo’ style. The welcome Address was delivered by the Lagos State Commissioner for Youths and Social Development, Mr Olusegun Dawodu while the theme session was anchored by the Lagos State Commissioner of Finance, Mr. Rabiu Olowo, who represented the Deputy Governor. The conference also hosted the Exco and Board Meeting of JCI Nigeria Directors; including the Senate Program with the CEO of NESG, Mr. ‘Laoye Jaiyeola.

The conference had partnerships with both public and corporate organizations. The public partnership is mainly with the Lagos State Government through its MDAs, while the key private partners are: Cway, Zedge Consulting, Whitestone Event Place, Food Commodity Processing Enterprise, Nigerian Breweries, Mahogany, Gil Automation, Sam-Vic Insurance Brokers Limited, Singlestone Nigeria Limited, Twelve 06 Affairs, International Breweries, Valencia College and EdgePlus Capital Limited.

The Closing Ceremony was a black-tie event tagged 007 Affair, based on the James Bond Character.

As part of the event for the Southern Conference, the Executives of JCI Nigeria paid a courtesy visit to Mr. Ganiyu Olusegun Dawodu, The Honorable Commissioner of Youth and Social Development, Lagos State.

The JCI Nigeria Senate Association, under the leadership of JCI Senator Oluwarotimi Adewole, hosted JCI Senators and partners to a networking session with the CEO of The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), Mr ‘Laoye Jaiyeola. In attendance, was the President of JCI Nigeria, JCI Sen. Abdullahi Bala Attairu

and the Executives. More than 50 years ago, the JCI Senate was established to recognize the outstanding achievements and service of JCI members worldwide.

The Audience

Our membership comprises of young active citizens delegates attended from other states of the country. We had a between the ages of 18 to 40 across the country. The cross-sector audience of over 1000 individuals including: audience at the conference is comprised mainly of entrepreneurs, academics, students, managers, policymakers members from the Southern States in Nigeria; such as: etc. 95% of the delegates were young people within the age Lagos, Ondo, Edo, Cross River, Akwa-Ibom, Abia, of 18 – 40. the remaining 5% comprised of members above Bayelsa, Ogun, Kwara, Enugu, Imo, River, Ebonyi, Oyo, 40; and they are JCI Senators and delegates from our Osun, Ekiti, Edo, Delta, and Anambra while close to 9% of Partners. A Zero-Plastic Event

The 2023 Southwest Training Retreat took place between November 2nd – 5th, 2023 at the exquisite Ilaji Resort, located at 1, Oloyo Village Off Ona-Ara Local Government Secretariat. The Retreat was themed “New Horizon” borne out of the need to inspire members to be creative, expand their sphere of influence, gain new perspectives, and be resilient while preparing them to be intentional in their life goals in the coming year.

Hosted by JCI Oluyole and this event is the first environmental sustainable event of JCI Nigeria as it was a single-use plastic free event.

“The theme - New Horizons, symbolizes our unwavering commitment to progress and growth. It reminds us that no boundary is insurmountable and no challenge too daunting. It compels us to embrace change, adapt to evolving circumstances, and seize every opportunity that comes our way.” – JCIN Amb. Kafayat Amoo, JCI Oluyole President A total of 233 delegates participated in the 2023 Southwest Training Retreat, drawn from the states in the Southwestern part of Nigeria. The delegates participated in various activities, such as, training, aerobics sessions, colour games, Cooking Competition, Art Therapy Masterclass, Roundtable Conversation on Leadership Values, Sport Activities and Parties. At the end of the retreat was a sign-off party and an award ceremony, where Local Organizations, Area Team Members and Retreat Groups were rewarded for their hard work. As part of the goal of the organizers to make the event A Plastic-free event: participants were preinformed to attend the event with their reusable Water bottles;

while the organizers also provided each participant with a new one. The catering and food services at the event was also made greener; as only reusable materials were used. Our caters will be on-site and the foods are sourced locally. Participants travelling to the retreat were also encouraged to travel together in buses or share seats in their respective cars.

“For the first time in JCI Nigeria, we had a 90% outdoor training sessions and just 10% indoor, and this was the first sustainable event in JCI Nigeria. Zero waste zero pollution. The retreat provided a maximum value to all participants” – JCIN Amb. Chike Okonkwo, the Retreat Director. From day 1 of the retreat, all participants were grouped into teams, and they all stayed together as a team throughout the retreat. The teams participated in group activities, competitions and presentations; which were graded.

The Southwest Training Directorate, led by JCIN Amb. Adepoju Joel; organized the following training sessions for the retreat: Unlocking your Potential and Influence by JCI Sen. Adetola Akinola; The Power of Teamwork by JCI Sen. Temi Alade-Mustapha; Resilient Leadership by JCI Sen. Paschal Dike; The Power of Influential Communication by JCI Sen. Training

Starting from the Day 1 of the Retreat After the Aerobics, was the Leadership Value session facilitated by the Skills Development directorate to warm people up for the day.

According to the Director, the session is to expose the participants to some values needed for leadership, i.e. forgiveness.

Three training sessions were held on Day 2 of the Retreat, namely: Unlocking Your Potential and Influence by JCI Sen. Adetola Akinola, Resilient Leadership by JCI Sen. Paschal Dike and The Power of Teamwork by JCI Sen. Temi Alade-Mustapha.

Cooking Competition

One of the most anticipated events on Day 2 was the cooking competition. Where 4 members from each team were given cooking utensils and an equal quantity of materials for them to display their culinary skills. The participants competed based on criteria such as speed, innovation, teamwork, presentation and of course, taste as the overall determinant. The judges were esteemed members of JCI Nigeria, such as, JCI Sen. Abdullahi Attairu (2023 National President); JCI Sen. Adetola Akinola (2019 National President); JCI Sen. Paschal Dike

(2016 JCI President); JCI Sen. ‘Rotimi Adewole (Senate Chair) and JCIN Amb. Busayo Oyebolu. After a thorough appraisal by the Judges, Team Blue won with 454 points followed by Team Green with 430 points, Team White had 406 points while Team Red got 360 points.

According to the team member in charge of the competition, JCIN Amb. Lanre Alawode, “the competition is aimed to encourage team bonding, bring out creativity in members and also teach time management and leadership”

The Sign-Off Party and Awards

After all the training, sightseeing, tours and various skills exchange programs; the southwest teams and participants signed off in a youthful way! Everyone came radiant, glowing and all dressed in the best way that resonates with their personality and creativity. There was the Ten Outstanding Local Organizations and Mentors

Award which recognised the Top 10 Outstanding Local Organizations and individuals who have demonstrated exceptional work in fulfilling the mission and vision of JCI Nigeria. Medals was also given to the Group with the highest overall scores while some team members that participated excellently well, were also recognized. There were loads of food and drinks for refreshment.

Who We Are: We are a membership-driven global network of dedicated and enterprising young leaders, aged 18 to 40. Active in more than 5000 locations across nearly 115 countries. JCI takes its members on a leadership journey, providing an environment for them to develop their true potential through 4 types of actions - projects, events, training and programs - aligned with 4 areas of development opportunities, that involve individual Development, Business and entrepreneurship, Community Action and International Cooperation.

JCI gives members the practical experience to become Global Communicators, Entrepreneurs, Changemakers and Networkers. Our organization is developing the next generation of leaders in government, business and civil society.

What We Do: • JCI equips young people to become leaders with the tools and resources needed to become Global Communicators, Entrepreneurs, Changemakers and Networkers. Our values include promoting economic growth and responsible leadership.

• Anyone wishing to become a leader should join JCI. We can help them accomplish their goals and amplify their success.

• By measuring results and evaluating impact, JCI members transform challenges into opportunities for empowerment, development and sustainable solutions.

• JCI hosts incredible international events, provides engaging training and skills development and gives you the opportunity to grow through attending new programs and designing projects.

How We Develop Enterprising Young Leaders • Through Training to encourage individual development: We focus on continuous personal improvement – by inspiring young people to become better leader.

• Programs that foster business and entrepreneurship: We expose members to opportunities that will enable them tap into their competitive side and enterprising spirit as a Global Entrepreneur!

• Through participation in Projects to inspire community impact: We provide the opportunity for young leaders to use their talents to take action and become Global Changemakers!

• Through Events by facilitating international collaboration: JCI events are a chance to travel to new places, experience new concepts and become a better leader while meeting other enterprising young leaders making a difference all around the world.
