The Showdown Crown is the most prestigious title in competitive meat fishing. The scoring format assigns a score based on where a team finishes in each tournament. A linear scoring system emphasizes performance and consistency, the benchmark of a true champion in any sport. And to the victor, goes the spoils, a custom set of Superbowl style championship rings. The scoring format for the series is as follows:
If there is a tie based on the scoring system, the tie breaker will be determined by whichever team has the highest total weight for the season.

It has always been a dream of mine to write my own story of winning the rings after reading the stories of others for many, many years. Winning the rings has been a super humbling and gratifying experience. For the Saltwater Shootout, we had to start the day slow trolling because there was no wind. We made a couple of passes o the Jupiter ledge, landing around 80 lbs of kingfish. The wind started to blow, so we fired three kites out, still o Jupiter. Within the next hour, we were able to upgrade two of our kings on the drift. We then decided to go tuna fishing. I was catching tunas during the pre-fishing week, so I knew exactly where I needed to be to get that done. The first bite was an amberjack which was strange because I didn’t catch one of them all week while pre-fishing for the tournament. The second bite was a jack crevallle. Again, we didn’t catch one of them during the week of pre-fishing. I was thinking, “Uh oh, I hope my tuna luck didn’t change.” After that, it was on! We landed four tunas in the next 20 minutes for over 95 lbs. Then we moved back to the ledge. Our goal was to chum up cobias while still fishing a full spread with the hopes to upgrade our kingfish total. After an hour, we caught three cobias and upgraded two of our kingfish. By this time, it was around 2:30 pm and we figured we had time for one more
drift. We knew we had a good total of 200+ pounds, but to win any of these events you generally need to have a spectacular day to feel confident heading to the scale.
On the final drift, I hooked a 40+ pound king on the kite. After a few minutes into the fight, the fluorocarbon broke in a weird spot unexpectedly. It was a big letdown! As Eyton was breaking down his kite a couple minutes later, a 40 pounder basically eats it out of his hand. After that fish hit the deck, we knew that was going to be a tough weight to beat. Our 249.1 pounds ended up being enough for first place, making it a dream come true. That was my first time winning first place in a PBSC tournament. – It is truly an honor to come out on top while fishing against the BEST in the BIGGEST meat fish tournament of the year!
Going into the Saltwater Slam, we knew we needed a top ten finish so we would be in good shape heading into the Saltwater Showdown. Pre-fishing was tough all week because we couldn’t dial in on any quality sized kingfish, but we were still on the tunas and knew they shouldn’t be a problem. We started the day fishing inside the ledge, along with about 25 other boats. Sadly, we could only manage about 60 pounds of kingfish in two hours, so we said it was time to tuna

fish. This time, we spent the next 6 hours catching 3 tunas as they certainly weren’t as cooperative as the Shootout. However, we were thankful to get the 3 out of the 4 that we had hooked because we knew this would place us in the top ten finish that we needed. We were lucky to weigh 106.8 pounds, which put us in 5th place for the Slam and exactly where I wanted to be heading into the final leg of the series.
The bite leading up to the Saltwater Showdown was really tough. We couldn’t dial in quality kingfish, but we knew that Jupiter would be our best bet to have a good finish. We slow-trolled the entire day as the bite was terribly slow for the first 3 hours of fishing. At around 11 am, the bite started to pick up. We caught a 24 lb king and a 23 lb king within 30 minutes. Then we got the bite we were looking for! We had a 40 + pound kingfish near the boat, hooked on the top of the head. We knew we couldn’t put
too much pressure on him, and after a 3-minute fight, a bull shark ate what would’ve been our winning fish. We regrouped and reset, putting the baits back out. We caught another king in the low 20s and then were lucky to get another big bite. This time, we were able to catch the fish in a relatively short manner. After the 34.9 kingfish hit the deck, we knew that we had won the rings. We headed back to the scales around 3:30, not thinking our catch would win the tournament, but we were pleasantly surprised to find out that 103.6 pounds was enough to take first place, allowing us to win 2 of the 3 events in the Summer Series. It was definitely a ‘prestino’ day for the SLOB City crew and one that we will remember forever.

Fishing for the 24th Annual Mercury/SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Shootout was exceptional with the top 7 teams all posting over 200 pounds in total weight. With a $124,000 cash purse up for grabs, every pound was sure to matter!
Out of the 78 boat fleet, 64 teams weighed fish and the scales at Alsdorf park got a major work out all day! However it would be team Slob City finishing in First Place Overall weighing in a total of 249.1lbs of fish! Slob City has been consistent in the PBSC, finishing in 10th place overall in 2021 and finally getting over the hump last season and landing themselves in the winner’s circle!!!! In addition to finishing in first place, Slob City was the highest earning team of the Shootout and had the third largest Kingfish (40.9), First Place Bluewater Bonanza, Third Place in the Big Three, First Place Ante Up, and the Charity calcutta benefiting Mission Fishin’ for a grand total of $23,170.
Team Seapremacy finished in second place again in the 2022 tournament weighing in 225 lbs of fish. Seapremacy also finished Second Place in the Bluewater Bonanza, Second Place Holy Mack and Second Place Ante Up for a total of $9,877!
Finsanity II finished in Third Place overall weighing 218.3lbs of fish, taking the top spot for the Heaviest Tuna (34.4) and the Bluewater Bonanza Third Place. Finsanity II angler Chris Wedgewood was also the top Male Angler (115.5pts). Other Top Anglers included Lauren David (Top Female) with 70 points on Good Hit, Dominick Palandro (Top Junior) with 44.4 points on Reel Conchy and Cooper Bradley (Top Pee Wee) with 64.1 points on O the Wall.
Captain Ryan Lucas and his crew on Bobber’s Under hit the big fish jackpot in the Shootout with a 46.3 pound kingfish that was the heaviest fish weighed in the tournament. The hefty king earned them a hefty payout of $16,168! Hoo We Billin swept the Small Boat Division finishing in First Place with total winnings of $2,918.
Last year, through a variety of fundraisers, the PBSC raised over $10,000 for its charity, Mission Fishin’. The fundraiser during the Shootout was a “Dunks for Dollars” Dunk Tank where teams had the opportunity to vote in the team of their choice to take the plunge in the tank! Over $2,000 was raised for Mission Fishin’. Thanks to all who participated!

Teams enjoyed a fun kicko party featuring a casting contest fundraiser for Mission Fishin’ while enjoying refreshing beverages from Landshark Lager & Islamorada Brewing Company plus great food from Bonefish Mac’s.
When the scales for the weigh-in open, you never know which team will have the heaviest bag, and it just so happened that one of the first teams to weigh, did just that. Team Doing It All/ Hardway was one of the first teams to jump on the stage at Sullivan Park to weigh in their fish, giving the crowd quite the show! They weighed in a 35.8lb Kingfish, a 23.2lb Blackfin Tuna, as well as a slew of other fish for a grand total weight of 156.5! There was a 33.6lb di erence between the top two teams and only team Ice Box would rival Doing It All/Hardway for the top spot, with a total weight of 122.9 for a second place finish.
In addition to finishing in first place overall, Team Doing It All/ Hardway also finished in First Place Bluewater Bonanza, Third Place Kingfish, Third Place Tuna, Third Place in The Big Three, Third Place in the Holy Mackerel, First Place in Ante Up, Charity Calcutta, and the top Male angler (Martin Martuscelli) and Second Place Junior Angler (Hunter Deka) for a grand total of $22,051!
Team Ice Box fishing on their 39’ SeaVee, was looking to repeat their performance from last summer when they won the KDW. They didn’t find any dolphin or wahoo but their stellar catch of four kings weighing 122.9 pounds was enough to secure them the second place position for the tournament! Their 38.2lb Kingfish won them second heaviest king, Second Place in The Big Three, Second Place in the Holy Mackerel, along with a couple other aggregate weight calcuttas for a total payday of $13,829!
Rounding out the top 3 for the Saltwater Slam was team Flight Plan. Weighing in a total of 115.1 lbs of fish. They also had the heaviest blackfin tuna of the tournament at 28.1lb as well as the heaviest cobia at 21.1 lb for a total of $5,188!
The biggest fish to hit the scales in the 27th Annual Mercury/ SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Slam was a 39.2 lb kingfish caught by tournament sponsor Tuppen’s Marine and team Nor Tech/Tuppens. As is always the case in the PBSC tournaments a BIG fish equals a BIG payout and that is exactly what Captain Steve Sprague and his teammates received in the form of a check for $16,503!

Well... after a day of slow fishing, I guess our day was not as slow as others. With Master Angler Martin M.
