A CHAMPIONSHIP PEDIGREE
As the proverbial saying goes, “There’s no I in Team”. No one understood that concept better than Joe Neber, founder of Contender Boats when he assembled Contender One, their ‘A Team’ to compete on competitive sailfishing’s largest stage – The Quest for the Crest Sailfish Series. Whereas many teams on the sailfish circuit are a collection of top anglers, mates and captains that have put together a roster they believe gives them the best chance for success, C1 is notably different. Sure, they have one of the top captains in the game, MVP mates and great anglers, but a core part of the C1 DNA is unique to them. They are one of, if not the only team in the series with over half of their crew that are actual employees of the manufacturer of the boat they compete on. Clearly that blended formula is working to perfection for team C1 with numerous victories in sailfish tournaments in recent years. None bigger than their Hall of Fame achievement in 2022 when they claimed the most prestigious title in sailfishing, winning the burgundy jackets and the Quest for the Crest championship title!

Captain: Quinton Dieterle (Captain “Q”) runs the charter boat, the Cutting Edge out of Key Biscayne and has had great success over the last 30 years fishing Billfish tournaments. He has received over 30 top captain awards, has won the “World Sailfish Tournament” and has been nominated in 2009 and 2010 as one of the top 5 captains in the world by In the Bite Magazine.
Mate: Cap Hinkley was born to fish having been raised on the waters of South Florida. He started out as a mate for Captain Q on the Cutting Edge, where he worked for 10 years. Cap worked his way from deckhand to sailfish teammate and on to Captain. A decorated tournament captain himself, Cap is no stranger to victory at sea.
Mate: Lucas Nido is a newer addition to the team. A full-time mate on the Cutting Edge for the past two years, Lucas is learning the ropes and honing his skills on the tournament boat under Captain Q’s watchful guidance.
Mate: Mike Lawson is another new addition to the C1 team. Mike also trained at Cutting Edge U with Captain Q for 10 years and although new to C1, he has been fishing on the sailfish circuit for over 13 years with great success. Mike is a two-time Quest champion earning his first burgundy jacket fishing with team Blue Time in the inaugural year of the Quest Series.

Angler: Jon Cooper (AKA Froggy) may be best known for his freediving and spearfishing expertise and as a

US Spearfishing national champion. However, don’t let his good looks and smooth attitude fool you. He’s a fierce competitor and perhaps one of the winningest mates to compete in the South Florida Sailfish Circuit. Captain Q and Froggy have been competing together for over 15 years. When not fishing on C1, Jon runs fishing and dive charters on his 39’ Contender, Diversion. Jon also works in sales for Contender where he draws on his knowledge and expertise to bring ideas and innovations to the production and design teams.
Angler: Steve Cunningham has spent the majority of his 40-year career in the fishing industry with Contender Boats as VP of Operations. He is now running Contender’s new factory in Fort Pierce where he is charged with building all Contenders 32’ and down. While boatbuilding may be his day job, Steve is an accomplished tournament captain and legendary boat operator.
Angler: Kenny Pontaris, after 35 years in the marine industry, joined the Contender team as VP of Manufacturing where he brings a wealth of experience both as a Captain as well as a boatbuilder. Most recently, Kenny captained the C1 team in our first season fishing the legendary

White Marlin Open and the new Jimmy Johnson Quest for the Ring in Atlantic City. This is his first season as Angler on the C1 Sailfish Team. Kenny is constantly rethinking and innovating, always looking for a better and more efficient way to build the highest performing center consoles on the market.
Angler: Ivan “I tighty here" Souto is C1’s flat line extraordinaire and silent assassin. In addition to being a staple on the C1 team and keeping us all fed and happy, Ivan manages Contender’s pre-rig department overseeing the production of each boat coming down the line. Ivan has fished on C1 since the inception of the team and has been with Contender for 32 years.
Angler: Amanda Sabin, while she was unable to join her team in 2022, is certainly worthy of her recognition as a valuable member of C1. Head of Marketing for Contender Boats, she also happens to be one hell of an angler with several top female and a master angler title in the Quest Series and she has also completed a royal slam in one year! She had a pee-wee angler in tote with a delivery date scheduled right in the heart of the 2022 season, otherwise she would have been right there shoulder to shoulder with her C1 team! We are excited to see her back in the saddle for 2023!

CONTENDER ONE
This tournament and series rank up there with the best wins of my career. Of course, winning the World Sailfish was a milestone and all the records we have set up and down the coast with historic numbers from the Sailfish Derby with 59 releases to the K-Rock Classic with 50 sails and a blue marlin released and the Lauderdale Billfish tournament with 37 releases is hard to forget. But it’s hard to describe how badly I wanted to win this series and do well for Contender Boats. I knew in my heart that we had the ability to win this. I also felt there was no better fishermen out there than the crew that we put together this year.
Running over 290 trips on my charter boat last year, on every trip, I tried to treat it as if I was fishing in the Quest series and what would I do. Some people may have thought we had too many chiefs on the boat, but at the end of the day, the decision of where we went and moves that we made rested on my shoulders, and I had the full support of my team.
Looking back, when we started off the series in Palm Beach fishing Operation Sailfish, I can still remember the anxiety I had going into the tournament and knowing that we had to get off to a solid start. We came out swinging with a slammer day fishing near the north boundary and caught 14 sailfish. As the second day arrived the weather changed, and fishing died off but we still managed to hold on to fourth place, which I knew would keep us in the running for the series.
The second tournament of the series, Sailfish Challenge, is the most difficult tournament to win in my opinion and
the decision-making process is crucial. With a 100-mile boundary you have a lot of options and a lot to consider. Fishing the prior couple weeks every day on the Cutting Edge, I felt I had a really good idea where we had to fish for the results we needed. We decided to stay in Miami and fish the area I fished all week and it paid off. We caught sailfish off free jumpers, and at the last minute we managed to pull off some Contender One heroics and catch a triple-header. It was an incredible win but who would have imagined what was in store for us in the next event.
Final Sail, the last leg of the series, has always been a good sailfish tournament for me. I’ve placed second in the tournament at least a few times but this time it had a lot more meaning. All I can remember thinking for weeks prior to the tournament is don’t screw this up. My mindset was, ‘Just go out and fish like you do every day and let things fall into place and when you really need something big, make it happen.’ And as all great stories go, the first day did not go as planned. But the second day was truly amazing. We caught a five banger to start off the day and just kept it rolling as the day progressed. I made a last-minute run thirty minutes back to the south to set up on the Haulover boil and we ended up catching another five banger at the end of the day to swing us into second place and secure the series win! Honestly, I still can’t believe we were able to pull it off. I am just a happy dirty yellowtail eating focker! Froggy and I are best friends and it meant so much to witness his emotion after years of hard work culminated with the biggest win of our careers. – Captain “Q”

follows: (1) The double line and leader must leave the tip of the rod once a strike occurs, unless they have already exited the tip of the rod. (2) At the conclusion of the fight the fish must be brought close enough to the boat for a mate or crewmember to touch the leader, not the double line. (3) In a continuous sequence, video footage must clearly identify the fish as well as the leader touch by a crew member. (4) Evidence on video of the leader being cut at the time of release. (5) The proper color card and confirmation # should be displayed on video to mark the completion of a catch.
27. Charter Boat Division: To qualify for the charter boat division, the following criteria must be met:
• Boat must possess a valid charter/head boat permit from NOAA
• Participating team must be an actual charter with paying customers, not hired guns fi shing on board a charter boat
• Captain and/or owner's primary income is derived from the charter business and does not operate as a side business
• Maximum of one captain and two mates plus customers. The customers are the only anglers on the boat. The rod may only be passed one time from a mate to a customer and that should occur immediately after the drag is engaged on a hooked fish.
28. Video Requirement: Every billfish released in the tournament must be verified by video footage clearly identifying the release. Each team is responsible for providing their own video camera and the appropriate media to record video footage that documents the releases on their boat. Video media will not be provided to teams by the tournament committee. Acceptable video formats are SD cards only. The first video clip to be shot by all teams should be of time, date and GPS location at the start of fishing. If you fill your first video and need to switch to a 2nd video during fishing please contact the radio room for an establishing shot to begin your video. A secondary video source is highly recommended.
29. Continuous Video Sequence: To ensure the authenticity of the releases, each team will be required to maintain a continuous video sequence from the time video evidence of the fish is established up to the time that the leader touch and cut is verified on video. If a break in the footage should occur, the team must reestablish video evidence of the fish again with a continuous video sequence up to the leader touch and leader cut.
30. Break Image: Once a release has occurred, the captain must contact the radio room for a confirmation # and instructions on which color card to shoot in order to complete the release on video. If a team is hooked up to multiple fish, a crewmember should state that on camera with video evidence to support it. In the case of a multiple, if necessary, one color card can be used for the break image, provided the video evidence can clearly distinguish multiple sailfish and anglers fighting those fish and the necessary criteria referenced above for qualification of the release on video.
31. Release & Catch Verification: All billfish releases must be reported to the tournament committee immediately following the release. Individuals calling in a release must include the boat number and angler name in their report. A release will be official once the radio controller responds to the respective angler with a confirmation number and color. That confirmation number and color should be recorded on the registered angler’s release card. Any boat unable to contact the committee should contact another boat for a relay. A tournament cell phone # will also be provided to teams at each Captain’s meeting. Boats that intend to fish in areas with poor cell phone coverage are still responsible for maintaining communication with the tournament committee on all releases.
32. Winnings: All winners are required to complete a W9 form prior to receiving any awards for each tournament. Awards and prize money will be withheld as required by law if a W9 form is not presented in advance of the awards presentations.

“It’s always exciting to fish against the best guys in the field. The two days of fishing was by far the best two days we have had in a tournament. We overcame the first day behind 10 fish to come out on top with the daily. The second day we had to catch fish to stay in the lead and at one point we went behind and picked away to get back on top. The crew was the key to our win and we want to thank Contender Boats for building us the fishing machine we have.” REGISTRATION INFO2022 CHAMPIONS TEAM NAME STILL RIGHT CAPTAIN SCOTT STOKY CREW R.
