QUEST FOR THE CREST SCORING SYSTEM

Presented in jacket form, the Crest is the most prestigious award in competitive sailfishing. It symbolizes achievement at the highest level in the sport. To don this coat of arms a team will have to perform at a high level across all legs in the series. The scoring format assigns a score based on where a team finishes in each tournament. A linear scoring system emphasizes performance and consistency, the benchmark of a true champion in any sport. The scoring format for the series is as follows:

To us, building our boats in the USA means more. It means a higher level of craftsmanship, honor, and pride. It means we don’t cut corners or sacrifice quality to chase profits. Most importantly, it means we are supporting the American labor force. To honor that American spirit, we put an American flag on every boat we build. We place it stars forward so the flag is always moving towards progress, with its stars lighting the way.

CHAMPIONS 2024 LIQUIDATED

Don’t ever underestimate the power of grit, determination, hard work and self-belief. We were the underdogs with a little boat that could. If FanDuel had a line on which team would win the 2024 Quest for the Crest Series, I doubt many people would have put their money on Team Liquidated. We were just a brand-new team fishing the series in a 36 foot center console with big aspirations.

Starting out the year, as team owner, I spoke with series Director, Jamie Bunn, about going toe to toe with the best Sailfishing teams in the world and my team’s desire to not only participate but to truly be competitive. Assembling a new team from scratch is never an easy task for anyone especially as most of the top fisherman have been fishing on the same teams for years.

Every team needs a Captain and that’s where Danny Clinton came into play. Danny was no stranger to tournaments and fishing for a wide variety of species in South Florida with years of experience under his belt. With a Showdown Crown ring and championship title in meatfishing already in hand, we knew he had the pedigree of a champion. His new test would be to take that same winning formula and apply it in our rookie season of the Quest for the Crest. The first task at hand was finding the right crew members to join the Team.

LIQUIDATED

Team chemistry is critical for success. It sets the tone for everyone to work hard even when the fishing is slow. After a few phone calls it didn’t take long to find the first few team members that Danny had grown up with and fished with for years. Shawn Weech and Erik Harvey were the first two guys to commit to fishing the entire sailfish season with Team Liquidated. Now we had a team of 4 guys but we needed more to complete the roster.

On our final step, we brought in the young guns, Kenny Rasberry, Trey Wheeler and Mark Motta to round out the team of 7 fisherman ready to chase the Burgundy Jackets. Trey Wheeler was no stranger to the tournament scene as his dad is a full time captain with a long list of tournament accolades over the years. There’s something about being young, hungry and wanting to make your own name in any sport.

Before the beginning of the season, I had some hoodies made that read “Cashing Checks, Breaking Necks” as the mantra for our coming out party in the 2024 Quest for the Crest season. Our plan was to show up and blow up. On the first day of Operation Sailfish it seemed like we might end up imploding with only one release for the entire day with other teams releasing multiple fish. That’s the great thing about two day tournaments… it’s not over until it’s over.

Captain Danny Clinton spent the night restless trying to decide where to fish on Day two, as most of the teams fished south of West Palm catching fish but we had the one release north of the inlet towards Jupiter. Day two weather conditions were polar opposites from Day one and we made the choice to head north into a 6 to 7ft strong north swell. Luckily for us we made the right choice as most teams went south and Danny put us in the prime spot to win. We caught our 7 fish before noon then had to watch Fish On catch fish after fish just south of us.

We were small but mighty and proved that size doesn’t always matter coming from behind to win the first sailfish tournament of the series. It was such an insane moment finding out that we had won Operation Sailfish. It’s one thing to win but to walk away with $229,000 dollars winning our first tournament as a team really set the tone for the rest of 2024. It wasn’t a question going into the other tournaments of whether WE COULD WIN because we knew that we had done it before and we could do it again.

Heading into Sailfish Challenge the bite was heating up. We caught over 50 Sailfish the week before the tournament and brought on another angler, Travis Claire, to help strengthen our roster. The excitement was on for Sailfish Challenge as we had been on fire all week catching Sails and knew that we had to finish in the Top 5 to have any chance of winning the Burgundy Jackets. All we needed was 5th place or better to keep the dream alive a little longer.

With a little more experience under our belts and a solid game plan we end up in 5th place for the Challenge which put us 1 point below Fish On for the overall title. What an absolutely insane place to be at as a freshman team chasing a dream of winning the most prestigious title in

sailfishing. It was surreal as I thought back about my conversation with Jamie and our goals as a team before the season. Now we were actually in contention for the title in second place overall after two tournaments. Going into Final Sail the plan was simple, we had to beat Fish On and they knew they had to beat us. It wasn’t that other teams in the mix couldn’t have won, but there was something about that one point difference between them and us. I just had a gut feeling that it was going to be us or them. We had battled it out at Operation Sailfish and we knew we were going to have to battle it out again in Miami. Could we do it again? Could we finish in the top five again in Miami to take home the Burgundy Jackets in 2024? Miami can be a tricky place to fish for many teams, but luckily we had some good knowledge on where to fish.

Day one started out exactly how we needed it to. We fi nished in second right behind Sandman as we had fished right next to them most of the day. The team energy was at an all-time high thinking that we assured our place in the top five after the first day’s result but don’t forget it’s a two-day tournament and it’s not over till it’s over. Day two started out rough with no releases until 11am while Fish On was gaining on us fast and we were watching them climb the leaderboard. The battle commenced as we decided to fish right next to Fish On for most of day two feeling that we could go bite for bite with them. At 3pm we saw Fish On release a fish just south of us and it was like déjà vu from Operation Sailfish.

We never backed down and just focused on what we needed to do to give our team the best shot to win. When the call came over the radio for lines out at 4pm, we knew we had done the impossible. A bunch of guys with one dream to wear the Burgundy Jackets and to compete against the best to ever do it. Those “Cashing Checks and Breaking Necks” hoodies had come full circle as Liquidated was the first rookie team to ever win the series as well as the smallest boat ever to win it. Maybe it was all a bit of luck but a lot of it was just an insane desire to WIN. It’s one thing to just participate in these tournaments for fun, but it’s another thing to put it all on the line to win. Danny Clinton led the team victory as the Captain of the Year and added a Burgundy Jacket to go with his Showdown Crown championship ring.

Looking back, it was all the little moments that made it something we will remember for life. The team chemistry and growth as a team coming together when it mattered the most was amazing. We never stopped believing that it was possible to WIN even when the odds were never in our favor. The best stories written are always the underdog stories of a group of people coming together to do the impossible. Team Liquidated did just that and we’re ready to battle it out against all greats in 2025 again.

COMPETITION RULES

24. Scoring: Billfish Points - Registered anglers will receive 1 point for each eligible billfish released in the tournament. All team prize categories will be awarded based on the team’s overall point standings. In the event of a tie, winners will be determined by the team or individual that releases their last fish first.

Dolphin, Wahoo, Kingfish, Tuna & Cobia Points - These species must weigh a minimum of 10 pounds to be eligible in the tournaments. Each fish meeting weight requirements will be given a score of one point per pound. These points will not be included with points awarded for billfish releases when determining the top team standings. See the meatfish division in the general prize structure of each event as well as the optional entry prize structure of each event for details on the prize money available in the meatfish categories. Mutilated fish will be disqualified. All decisions of the weighmaster are fi nal.

25. Semi-Pro Category: There is a semi-pro prize category in each leg of the series. To qualify for this prize money, the following criteria must be met. Criteria 1: Two or fewer paid crew members on board (including captains, mates, and anglers). Criteria 2: There can not be anyone on board that has placed in the top 8 of a Quest for the Crest tournament within the past 8 years.

26. Billfi sh Release Criteria: All billfi sh in each event must be properly released in order for a point to be scored to the registered angler and his or her team. The requirements for a release are as follows: (1) The double line and leader must leave the tip of the rod once a strike occurs, unless they have already exited the tip of the rod. (2) At the conclusion of the fi ght the fi sh must be brought close enough to the boat for a mate or crewmember to touch the leader, not the double line. (3) In a continuous sequence, video footage must clearly identify the fi sh as well as the leader touch by a crew member. (4) Evidence on video of the leader being cut at the time of release. (5) The proper color card and confi rmation # should be displayed on video to mark the completion of a catch.

27. Video Requirement: Every billfi sh released in the tournament must be verified by video footage clearly identifying the release. Each team is responsible for providing their own video camera and the appropriate media to record video footage that documents the releases on their boat. Video media will not be provided to teams by the tournament committee. Acceptable video formats are SD cards only. The fi rst video clip to be shot by all teams should be of time, date and GPS location at the start of fi shing. If you fill your fi rst video and need to switch to a 2nd video during fi shing please contact the radio room for an establishing shot to begin your video. A secondary video source is highly recommended.

28. Continuous Video Sequence: To ensure the authenticity of the releases, each team will be required to maintain a continuous video sequence from the time video evidence of the fi sh is established up to the time that the leader touch and cut is verified on video. If a break in the footage should occur, the team must reestablish video evidence of the fi sh again with a continuous video sequence up to the leader touch and leader cut.

29. Break Image: Once a release has occurred, the captain must contact the radio room for a confi rmation # and instructions on which color card to shoot in order to complete the release on video. If a team is hooked up to multiple fi sh, a crewmember should state that on camera with video evidence to support it. In the case of a multiple, if necessary, one color card can be used for the break image, provided the video evidence can clearly distinguish multiple sailfi sh and anglers fi ghting those fi sh and the necessary criteria referenced above for qualification of the release on video.

30. Release & Catch Verification: All billfi sh releases must be reported to the tournament committee immediately following the release. Individuals calling in a release must include the boat number and angler name in their report. A release will be official once the radio controller responds to the respective angler with a confi rmation number and color. That confi rmation number and color should be recorded on the registered angler’s release card. Any boat unable to contact the committee should contact another boat for a relay. A tournament cell phone # will also be provided to teams at each Captain’s meeting. Boats that intend to fi sh in areas with poor cell phone coverage are still responsible for maintaining communication with the tournament committee on all releases.

31. Winnings: All winners are required to complete a W9 form prior to receiving any awards for each tournament. Awards and prize money will be withheld as required by law if a W9 form is not presented in advance of the awards presentations.

REGISTRATION INFO 2024 CHAMPIONS

Having a team that is always prepared for any circumstances, good or bad, truly paid o in the last half hour of the tournament. Down by three fish, no one gave up. The team kept working hard and capitalized on four fish in the final 30 minutes. What a great feeling when it all comes together—a fantastic win for Team Sandman!

Release Round Up

This optional entry category is divided into 4 rounds over 2 days of fishing. Numbers ranging from 1 to 5 will be drawn from the sealed container during each round of fishing. That number will determine the minimum number of sailfish that must be released to move on to the next round. Drawn numbers can only be used once. A team must advance through all 4 rounds in order to win the pot. In the final round, should multiple boats release the required number of fish, the team that releases the most fish in that round will win. Ties determined by whichever team released last fish first. If no winner, pot rolls over to next leg of the Quest series. Entry fee is $1,000 per boat.

“Day one brought us some hard conditions, with no wind for most of the day. Our team did a great job keeping us in contention. Day two brought a total change in conditions—everyone was prepared for the strong tailing wind conditions, which led to a great win for Team Sandman. What a season! Winning three major tournaments in a row wouldn’t have been possible without Sandra and our awesome team.”
