Dock Annual Report 2017-18

Dear Friends of Dock Mennonite Academy We have many reasons to celebrate this year! • • • •

We celebrate being debt-free on both campuses at Dock. We celebrate several years of strong financial reports and audits. We celebrate the strong support of this community in caring for our children and grandchildren. We celebrate the faculty and staff who walk alongside our students, encouraging them and rooting for their success. • We celebrate a strong board that provides guidance. • We celebrate supportive pastors and congregations. The 2017-2018 Annual Report is a celebration of the life-changing ministry of Dock Mennonite Academy. It gives evidence of your partnership in this work. Thank you! Your faithful support of Dock is an inspiration to our students and faculty. This year Dock completed an extensive process of self-review and an external team review leading to a renewal of our accreditation from AdvancEd and Mennonite Education Agency. We have formed a Continuous Improvement Team as we strive to grow and improve each year. SMART goals guide our improvement process. Our graduate profile speaks to the value of Dock. Our graduate profile notes that Dock strives to prepare students who communicate effectively and appreciate creativity. They discover and develop their God-given gifts. They respect diversity and practice stewardship in their daily lives. This outlines a journey to become a person who lives a life of significance to better one’s community and world. Your partnership allows students to grow academically, spiritually, and socially. Thank you for your generosity and your role in providing a faith-infused education for our students. Thank you for your prayers and financial support of Dock. We welcome your continued encouragement as we inspire young people to grow and become the next servant leaders for our community and beyond. In Christ,

Dr. Conrad Swartzentruber Superintendent 1 - Dock Annual Report 2017-18

A CARING COMMUNITY From the first day of preschool until the day they graduate, Dock students are supported by a caring community that serves as an extension of family—a safe environment where inquiry is encouraged, and learning is inspired.

2 - Dock Annual Report 2017-18

Deep Gratitude for Generosity We are grateful for the generous support of individuals, families, businesses, churches, and foundations during the 2017-18 year. In addition to our annual fund donations of close to $225,000, our net fundraising events profit was $237,500. Dock was delighted to receive $146,250 toward the EC-8 campus construction loan and $25,000 toward the Rosenberger Academic Center loan. Dock also received $321,900 in EITC and OSTC funds which provided financial aid and benefited qualifying families and students. The Board of Trustees is thankful for the addition of $95,600 toward Dock’s endowment through planned and estate gifts. We are reminded of the importance of planned and legacy gifts through charitable bequests, gift annuities, IRA rollovers, retirement plan designations, and donor advised funds. In addition, the Dock community appreciated the receipt of six grants totaling $27,500. The Dock community expressed appreciation for Pillars and Partners during a November Pillar and Partner Appreciation event. This special evening included music by our students, words of appreciation, a superintendent’s update, a video highlighting Austin and Julie Landes, and hearing the impactful story of the Issa and Colette Odeh family from Palestine. We celebrated God’s faithfulness through the donors who contributed so our students could study and explore their interests and passions through amazing programs and opportunities at Dock. Gifts to special projects continue to fill some of the needs which are above budget and not included in the Dock Fund. In 2017-18, special projects included:

• • • • • • • •

Urban/Philadelphia Fund Sponsorship Assistance Fund (fostering international Mennonite relationships) Colby Swartley Memorial Fund Harvey Bauman Scholarship Fund James 1:27 Single Parent Scholarship Fund Tractor Fund Project Based Learning Keyboard Lab

During the 2017-18 school year, we had the opportunity to impact 760 students, including 70 international students from China, South Korea, Vietnam, Mexico, Palestine, and Albania. The class of 2018 included 95 members with 94% attending college, 4% entering the job market, and 2% doing a year of service. Thank you for investing in the lives of Dock students through your gifts and generosity, which is a great encouragement as students are “learning for lives of purpose.” Gratefully,

Robert D. Rutt Director of Advancement 3 - Dock Annual Report 2017-18
