President’s Report Dear Fellow Members: The past year, the second of the Covid-19 pandemic, has been both difficult and gratifying. Difficult because the Club was closed or only partly open during the entire year. Membership access to sports and restaurant facilities were limited or entirely closed. Employees were even more affected, with some laid off or furloughed and others asked to report only part-time. These notwithstanding, the membership continued paying Club dues and the staff continued to keep Club facilities secure and properly maintained. They continued to provide efficient and cheerful service to the membership whenever circumstances permitted. Club facilities The focus of the year’s activities has been the maintenance and upgrading of Club facilities, with primary attention given to the almost half-century old electrical system that has been taken for granted. A professional survey indicated the need for urgent action to ensure the safety of members, guests and staff and the Club building itself. These are now being attended to. The upgrading of internet access, begun in the previous year, was completed and became operational. This not only gave better service to Club members and guests but also helped raise food and beverage revenue. Repairs and maintenance With the lull in operations, management took the opportunity to undertake long-deferred repair and maintenance activities, refurbishments, and renovations. These include the cleaning of the Club cistern; repainting of Club roofs and fence, the Log Cabin ceiling and other facilities; refurbishment and general cleaning of Club kitchens; repair of the walk-in freezer; installation of awnings at the indoor tennis courts; upgrading of the ventilation in the Log Cabin, first and second floor verandas, and locker rooms; installation of electronic sports reservation boards; Food and beverage With Covid-19 restrictions, patronage of the Club restaurants and function rooms for corporate and individual events was practically nil for much of the year. Initiatives were taken to make up for the difference including increase food and beverage sales including special food promotions, thematic buffets, online sales and delivery
1
Human Relations With the agreement of the Makati Sports Club Union, Collective Bargaining negotiations were postponed in view of the financial impact of Covid-19. Recognizing the hardship being experienced by Club employees, measures were taken to help ease the lot of Club staff and the Club’s extended family including ball boys and trainers, barber shop and beauty parlor staff who depend on the patronage of members and guests; and employees who work on rotation and receive no pay when they do not report. Community pantries were separately sponsored by the Club and by the Union for staff and extended family. While Club funds covered part of the cost of Club-sponsored events, much of the funding was due to the generosity of the membership who gave substantial contributions for the purpose. For the safety of Club staff, members and visitors, the Club funded measures including antigen testing, foot baths, temperature checks, and other health measures. Assistance to the less fortunate Notwithstanding the Club’s financial position, the Board noted that other Filipinos were in even greater difficulty and approved a significant donation for the victims of typhoon Odette through Caritas Philippines and smaller amounts for other worthy causes. These were funded by the proceeds of an online concert featuring famous singer Noel Cabangon. Club management The long-serving General Manager, Mr George Salvador, sadly passed away during the year and the Club’s Comptroller Mr. Ronaldo Limbo was appointed General Manager. It has been Mr. Limbo and the management team who have successfully directed Club affairs during the year, including the stringent cost cutting measures required to keep Club finances strong. The country appears to be recovering from the economic and health difficulties of the past year and with the guidance of Divine Providence and the united effort of all stakeholders, the Club remains strong. We can truly be proud that the challenges of Board year 2021-2022 were successfully met with the goodwill, dedication and sacrifice of the Club membership and its Directors, officers, staff, and extended family.
