I think I ha e an oka amo nt of ne roticism in m personalit , I get stressed o t easil and orr abo t e en the smallest things a lot. B t I don t reall get irritated or pset easil and don t reall ha e mood s ings. A lot of times I o ld get stressed o t reall easil and can t stop thinking abo t it for the hole da or I o ld cr a little bit m self beca se I get stressed. The constit te a form la for getting the complete stor on a s bject. According to the principle of the Fi e Ws, a report can onl be considered complete if it ans ers these q estions starting ith an interrogati e ord.

Keep in mind that we all have these traits within our personalities we just have different percentages of each of them Personality traits can always develop over time so it might not show now but later on you could discover more about yourself I personally don t think personality traits can ever be restricted or complete forever as humans we will always go through the process of growing learning changing Our personalities could be the way it is from experience or what you see as you grow up Personality can also be affected by your parents and culture

This matters beca se kno ing and learning abo t o r o n personalit , can help o nderstand o rself more ith o r beha iors, the a o talk. If e didn t kno or learn abo t personalit e o ld al a s be q estioning o rsel es all the time o er and o er again, h do I do hat I do? Or Wh do I act the a I act? Personalit also helps ith nderstanding others hen o kno hat t pe of person the are so o kno ho or hat t pe of a is oka to act aro nd them and not go o er the bo ndaries. O r generation is act all q ite positi e and enco raging abo t being o rself and not changing ho o are for others, e sho ld contin e this in the f t re, to create a positi e, health , and s pporti e en ironment for o r comm nit . We sho ld teach others that it s ok not to be like others and there isn t a thing s ch as a bad personalit , Personalit is hat makes each and e er one one of s niq e.

Personality and Adolescence T eI a ce f Pe a a d Ad e ce ce

n od c ion We have been learning in Social Studies about Identity and how it affects us as people like gender, sex, sexuality, adolescence, ethnicity, race, and culture. What is the advantage? It helps you understand people and what they stand for and who they are and their preferences. Personality is grouping types of people that have the same characteristics together but mixed since we are following the big five personality traits. Adolescence is a time in our life where we learn the most and pave a way of who we are by learning from mistakes and putting and effort into work and having supportive friends.

AI The first trait in the big 5 traits is Openness. People with lots of Openness appreciate Art, Emotions, magination, Adventure deas, Curiosity, etc. People who have high openness are usually full of ideas, Likes trying new things, curious, good imagination, have abstract thinking, and are more creative. Although having high Openness can be good it can also endanger you in some ways. According to the Personality Ebook, “high openness can be perceived as unpredictability and lack of focus which can later lead to more likely to engage in risky behavior and can also cause unconventional beliefs too. One example of a character that has a lot of Openness is Alice in Wonderland. n one of the scenes when she was learning she got distracted by her surroundings which shows that she has a lack of focus which is caused by high Openness. The second trait in the big 5 traits is conscientiousness. People who have a lot of conscientiousness are usually self-disciplined, stubborn, and arrogant. According to the Personality Ebook, “High conscientiousness is sometimes perceived as being stubborn and focused. Low conscientiousness is associated with flexibility and spontaneity, but can also appear as disorganised and unreliable. High scores on conscientiousness indicate a preference for planned rather than spontaneous behavior. Generally, people are a combination of both. One example of a character that has a lot of conscientiousness is Hermione Granger from Harry Potter. Hermione has High conscientiousness which is shown in a scene. n the scene, she is always stubborn and arrogant to her classmates like telling them they are doing it wrong and she thinks she is always right.

The third trait is Extraversion. According to the Personality Ebook, “Extraverts enjoy interacting with others and are often full of energy.

IN O When talking about identity, a major topic that is discussed is personality. Personality is your individual differences in the characteristic patterns of thinking, behaving, and feeling. Your personality and the big 5 traits have a big impact on your identity. The big 5 traits assert that each personality trait is a spectrum, so it is ranked between two ends of the spectrum. ntrovert, Ambivert, and Extrovert. P CTURE FROM GOOGLE

n the graph above is when did my traits test. scored 52% in openness which causes me to be full of ideas, likes to try new things .etc. A 37.5% in conscientiousness causes me to be disorganised and unreliable but not arrogant or stubborn. A 33% in extraversion cause me to be a introvert which means am shy and don't like to speak up in groups. A 67% in agreeableness which causes me to be trustworthy and help. Lastly a 42% in Neuroticism causes me to be a little worry about others and also sometimes feels that ordinary situations are scary.

AI

Extroverted people may appear more dominant in social settings, as opposed to introverted people in this setting. When did the traits test realized that my percentage for extraversion is really low which means that am not extraverted but instead am an introvert. ntroverted people are usually shy and less noticed in groups which causes them to have a hard time speaking in front of groups. One example of a character that has a lot of Extraversion is Donkey from Shrek. Donkey is an Extravert which makes him loud, happy, energetic, etc. n one scene Donkey is singing and dancing in front of a big group which shows that he is not scared to stand out in a group of people. The fourth trait is Agreeableness. People who have a lot of agreeableness usually get along with others, helpful, generous, trustworthy, trusting, and are willing to share their interests with others. According to the Personality Ebook, “Agreeable individuals value getting along with others. They are generally considerate, kind, generous, trusting and trustworthy, helpful, and willing to compromise their interests with others. Agreeable people also have an optimistic view of human nature. People who are disagreeable usually don’t get along with others, don’t rely on the approval of others before taking action, and might be skeptical of others which makes them suspicious, unfriendly, and uncooperative. One example of a character that has a lot of agreeableness is Snow white. Snow White shows a lot of agreeableness because in one scene when the evil queen shows up, Snow White cared for her and took her in her house when the birds even warned her not too. This shows that when you have a lot of agreeableness you might have too much trust in a person that later can lead you into danger. The fifth trait is Neuroticism. Neuroticism is the tendency to experience negative emotions such as sadness, anger, anxiety, etc. People who have a lot of Neuroticism usually react more emotionally and are more vulnerable to stress. They are also more likely to think that ordinary situations as threatening. According to the Personality Ebook, “People who have a low level of Neuroticism are usually less easily upset and are less emotionally reactive. An example of a character that has a high level of Neuroticism is 3-CPO. n one scene 3-CPO is really worried about R2-D2 which shows that he was really worried about other people and was really stressing out when they didn’t listen to him. This shows that when you have a lot of Neuroticism you are usually going to be worried about friends and have a lot of anxiety when they do something.

Conclusion

The big 5 traits help us understand more about ourselves and others because we can truly figure out what is truly making us do these things. For example, getting mad easily, being really trustworthy, or being really energetic and loud. This is really important because it affects how you portray yourself and it can also affect your patterns in thinking, behaving, and feeling. The big 5 traits could be a rule that we could use to understand people’s personalities, motivations, and identities better.

Gender

Gender Stereotypes have a big effect on your personality because it might cause you to change your identity due to the stereotypes others give you. For example, people stereotyped that boys usually play with trucks and girls will play with dolls. This could be really harmful to a boy or girl who wants to play with toys that are meant for the opposite gender. For example, a girl wants to play with trucks but she always gets dolls as her toys. Another example of a stereotype is boys who dress up or behave in a girl way are usually bullied or teased by others. This is really harmful to boys because they might get teased or bullied and also because they might not have a chance to express themselves and act the way they want to which can lead them to changing their identity because they don't want to be bullied. These examples show that stereotypes can have a really big effect on one’s identity. Gender stereotypes are usually made up by others or what the society thinks about gender. From my personal experience, my parents only bought me trucks, cars and superheroes to play with when was young and whenever went to my cousins house who was a girl, would always see her playing with dolls instead of trucks. This shows that when was young my parents and uncle also stereotypes me and my cousins which causes me to play with trucks and my cousin to play with dolls.Usually in the society women are looked down on and are usually seen as weak and passive. This causes toxic masculinity to happen and causes people to look down on women and girls. Girls and women will not be given the same opportunities as boys and men since most people believe that they are not as smart, athletic or strong. According to the Newsela article, "Kids want to see more female superheroes", it says that “according to a new study by the Women's Media Center and BBC America. The study found that most girls believe there are not enough female role models on film and television. The girls surveyed also said there is a lack of strong female characters and relatable female characters in movies and on TV. This shows that girls and women are usually looked down on which causes them to appear less as role models in films because compared to men, men look stronger and are seen more capable than women. Everyone in the community has a unique identity. No matter if you are a boy, girl, or someone that doesn’t even identify with a sex. Gender is what you identify as. Sex is what gender you are assigned to and sexuality is what gender you are attracted to. There are multiple ways people are trying to change their identity or find their identity but in some communities, they aren’t allowed to. For example in Brunei, if someone is having sexual intercourse with someone else of the same gender, they will be tortured by getting rocks thrown at which can sometimes lead to death. This shows that countries are open to LGBTQ but some don’t accept them.

Stereotypes are a really important subject that can have a huge effect on people's personality and Gender. By understanding Gender Stereotypes people can protest against them and also not make comments about them to someone of the different gender or someone who doesn’t belong to any gender. Also, representations of all genders of people are really important because it can give kids different perspectives of different genders and also give kids who are like that, someone who they can look up to.

WHAT MAKES OUR IDENTITY UNIQUE

RACE, ETHNICITY By Camille

H

W a

Race, Ethnicity and Culture are some of the factors that help shape our identity. Race is different categories of people based on their common characteristics. There are different races such as Asian, African, Native American, European and Oceanian. Ethnicity is associating yourself in a group with different people who have similar cultures. There are many ethnic groups in the world such as Korean, German, Somali, etc.. Lastly, culture is the music, food, history, beliefs, clothing, traditions, dance, arts that is observed in a group of people. For example, in the Philippines, it is common to reach for the back of the hand of an elderly and place it on your forehead as a sign of greeting and respect.

CULTURE

My race, my ethnicity and my culture have a huge impact on my identity and is part of the reason I am who I am today. The color of my skin and the fact that I am Asian has helped shape my identity because of the experiences I have gone through. An example would be the way people treat me when they find out where I am from and my background. The several traditions celebrated in my home country and the values I have been taught growing up have also helped shape my identity because it makes me stand out from the rest of the different groups of people and it gives me my own stories to share to others. An example would be like what we do back in my home country, The Philippines, during the holidays. Most of the population is Catholic and so on Christmas Eve, we like to attend what is called Misa de Gallo which is a mass to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Afterwards, we all gather at the dinner table for Noche Buena where a variety of food is laid out for all of us to eat such as Pancit Malabon, Queso de Bola and many more

These three factors can help shape a person s identity in several ways. In the newsela article, For third culture kids, home can be everywhere and nowhere, it states that, TCKs mix the new country s culture with their parents culture. This way, they make a new, third culture of their own. An example of a third culture could be the way the person dresses. The person could wear clothes that they often see in the culture of the new country while also associating what they see is worn in their parents culture. When a person is immersed in their culture, they allow themselves to have a basis for their morals and values. For example, in Asian cultures, it is common to have the three generations live under one household. In the newsela article about Race, Don t judge a book by its cover Race is not genetic, it states that, Different races have different experiences. This means that you are treated differently depending on the color of your skin, where you re from and your background. An example would be that a person with dark colored skin is treated unfairly than a person with lighter skin. Referring back to the Newsela article, Racial bias has often led to unfair treatment of people who are not white. Racial bias is favoring one person or group than the other. Now, connecting that to our example, people of color aren t treated equally because of the racial bias other people have towards their features. Although, this can help shape a person s identity by forming a narrative through their different experiences given their different ethnicities. With every experience, there is a story that leaves an impact on the identity of a person.

T e S g f ca ce

Learning about these three concepts has taught me how to better understand my background and history. It has also taught me to realize that it is the reason why my identity is different and unique from the identity of others. Not only has it taught me how to better understand myself, it has also taught me to learn how to appreciate the identity of others and the value of respect. Because we all come from different races, different ethnicities and we all celebrate different cultures, we need to learn how to respect each other and Newsela As One of the Third Culture Kids, She Feels Both Rootless and Worldly be open to diversity. WHAT MAKES OUR IDENTITY UNIQUE

GENDER By Camille

Gender is one of the many factors that can help shape a person s identity, just like your race, ethnicity and culture, your gender makes you unique. Gender is how you view yourself and what you identify as with society s standards. In the newsela article, Gender, sex and sexuality explained , it states that, We have mostly been taught there are only two genders, men and women. This means that you can either identify as Female meaning that you follow what it is that most women are expected to do, or you can identify yourself as Male meaning that you follow what men are expected to do. There are also many terms that describe gender such as cisgender meaning that the sex you were assigned at birth, you identify with, transgender means that you do not identify with the sex assigned at birth. There is also non binary, genderqueer, agender, bigender.

H

My gender is one of the factors that has a big impact on my identity and is one of the many reasons that has helped shape my identity to what it has become today. The way I have chosen to identify myself as a cisgender woman has helped shape my identity because of the way I express myself. As a cisgender woman, I choose to follow through with society s standards and their expectations on what a woman should be. For example, I like wearing girly types of clothing such as skirts and dresses, I enjoy doing things that women are mostly expected to do like do my hair or put on makeup. But, not all people who identify as cisgender may like what I like doing. These expectations and standards from society are known as Stereotypes.

W a ae ee e a d ca affec e e

Stereotypes are judgements made by society about a person or group without actually knowing who they are. In the newsela article, Boys and girls pick up harmful stereotypes very young, study says. , it states Picture from https images.app.goo.gl 66VESqYXGd4HZ5sc7 examples of stereotypes such as, These stereotypes can really take a toll on a But, society is harsher on boys. person s self esteem and it can make them They are still not allowed to act or feel like they are not enough or capable of look like girls. , Girls are supposed doing anything which could result in the to stick close to home. They are person falling into bad habits such as using expected to be passive or quietly drugs. In my own experience, my mom is the accept what others tell them to do or breadwinner of the family and my dad is the do to them. , Things are very one at home taking care of us. Not only does that fight against the stereotype of how different for boys. They are encouraged to spend time outside of women are expected to stay at home while men are out working and earning money for the home, exploring the world on the family, my mom is also representing all the their own. , Children learn to think women in the workforce. A person s gender and how they choose to identify themselves can have a really big impact on their identity. In the newsela article, Gender, sex and sexuality explained , it states that, Gender expression is how someone expresses and shows their gender to others. An example of gender expression would be the way they look, the way they dress, how they act, their behavior towards others and chosen pronouns for themselves. Referring back to the newsela article, Gender, sex and sexuality explained , it states some examples of the pronouns, Some people have created new pronouns such as ze hir hirs. Others just use they instead of he or she, to cover all genders at once. All of this can help shape the person s identity by giving them the ability to freely express themselves and represent who they would want to be.

T e S g f ca ce

Learning about gender and gender expression teaches me how it can shape my identity and the identity of others. It also teaches me how to better understand them and respect them for being able to express themselves freely. Along with that, learning about the many stereotypes has taught me how much harm it can do to a person s self esteem and mental health. To break down these stereotypes, we need representation. We need people with different backgrounds, gender identities and stories to represent themselves on different platforms, whether it be on TV shows or in the workforce, in order to fight against these stereotypes. This matters because it can uplift the way people think about themselves, looking at someone who is similar to them will serve as role models and show them that just anything is possible no matter what gender or background you have. ntroduction We have to learn about many different identities that have been shaped by personality traits, race/ethnicity culture, Gender, Sex, Sexuality, and Adolescence. All these came with us since we are born and will be with us until we die. If you understand these will understand ourselves and other people, we make us be our self today.

Personality Traits/Types

Conscientio sness means a person that is responsible and focuses on the topic they do. Self-disciplined, attention to detail, dutiful, can be stubborn. For example, from my result from the test, I got 33% for Conscientiousness, that means I'm a person that will not have much stress, I'm a person the is free because I'm an open-minded person, but the bad thing might be like I forgot something it might make me get in trouble sometimes. Openness means people that like art, adventure, or learning new things. Imagination, curiosity, try new things can lack focus. For example, From my test result, I got 73%. That means I'm a person who likes to try new things and want to find out something that I'm curious about, like history about different places and people. E tro ersion means people that like to do many things and new things. As a big group, the center of attention, social, doesn't always think before speaking. For example, from my test result, I got 67%, which means I'm a person who does not like to stay around with many people and kind of a person who has my world and sometimes doesn't think before doing or speaking. Agreeableness means people that think or care about other people thinking. Trusting, care about other feelings, optimistic. For example, My result for this I got 69 that means I'm a person that cares about other people feeling trustful person and kind and ok to stay with anyone\person

Ne roticism means People that find stress difficult. They often find normal situations scary and small frustrations very difficult. Low tolerance for stress, worries, frustrated For example, I got 42%. That means I might get angry easily if it doesn't reach the goal I expected but I'm not worried about those small mistakes because I think I can just fix it and I'm a person that would like to take risks. That shapes me to be who I am as a person that likes to take risks, be flexible, and always curious and Adventurous, Because of this sometimes I lose concentration easily. I can’t focus because I think about other things. It is important that we know our personality traits because I can know in the future what job I can do. For example, if you are extraversion and openness, then a job working with different kinds of people is good. If you are not an extrovert it may be hard to work with lots of people because you like to be in your own world and do not like to hangout.

Gender/Sex/Sexuality "Did you know that pink used to be a boy's color?" "Women might have shorter hair, like men or boys often do. But she still can call herself a woman. The important thing is that each person knows their own gender identity and expression. Others cannot decide for them." Gender, sex, and sexuality are complicated and deeply rooted in every person's own experience and feelings. Some things I learned about identity through stereotypes are boys must be more potent than girls. If you are not a boy or girl, but you are gay or lesbian, you are not typical because they should only have boys or girls in this world boy who has more freedom than girls.

Stereot pes can be harmful because Sometimes it hurt all gender when people say it multiple time. For example, If o are not a bo or girls o often get bully by a friend and the wrong thing will follow like don't go to school The most country in Asia considers that Bo has more freedom than

girls beca se in the ne sela sa that "girls are e pected to stick close to home and to q ietl accept hat others tell them to do or do to them." they are scared that if a girl is outside there can have sexual violence. Still, girls will also not have a good education because they might need to come home fast or can't learn. Most people belie e that bo is more s bstantial than a girl. It is right in some way but also not accurate in some way. It confirmed the most boy is stronger than a girl. Still, some girl is stronger than a boy thing that can affect their life because they will not have access to do as much something as a boy, according to the article. Meanwhile, girls across the world are taught that their bodies are significant. people believe that sexual violence will also happen, and they think that boy thinking and feeling are more substantial than girls, so they prefer boy more than girls This shows how stereotypes can shape identity because it is a social judgment from generation to generation, affecting the people's identity from the beliefs that accumulate and the culture. Example in my family boy will be the one who goes out for work and find money and the girls to stay home to look after the house and prepare for food and look after the kid and if you have wife or husband you parent will choose for you because the boy and the parents are the main points of the family. According to the newsela article, Girls and boys learn gender behavior roles when they are young. The stereotypes can be awful for girls, the newsela says. "They can make girls drop out of school. The gender roles can lead to girls being hurt." According to the newsela article ( gender, sex, and sexuality explain), "Society has certain ideas about what gender is." These ideas lead to how boys and girls are expected to behave. But people also have their own gender identity. This is the gender that you know you are. It might not be what other people say. It is how you identify or see yourself." This is important for teenagers to understand because teenagers are going to be the next generation that will come out Because when teens know these things. It will help them to think in the correct way and more fairness for everyone in society. That everyone is equal, and nothing is right or wrong in this world. The misconception thinking is like the CEO should be a male, not female, boys need to attract girls only or that girls can be a soldier the same as a boy. This is important for people to change their beliefs and some stereotypes to ensure that both boys and girls or other gender are equal NOW!!!

By Roni Personality is an important part of what makes up our identity. What most people are not aware of is that every single person has the big 5 personality traits. The big 5 personality traits are the main traits that a person has. An acronym to remember the main 5 traits is OCEAN. They include Openness (Open to new experiences, have imagination, are curious, have a lack of focus), Conscientiousness (Self-disciplined, is dedicated, strive for achievement, always prepared), Extraversion (Dominant, they like socializing, have energy and enthusiasm, outgoing), Agreeableness (Kind and caring, optimistic, leadership skills, peer-pressured too easily and trust in the wrong person), and Neuroticism (Low tolerance for stress, prone to anger, anxiety, or sadness, protects from potential danger, frequent mood swings). In the personality ibook it states that “All people have a combination of all 5 categories in their personalities, though some may show higher levels of one trait or another. This indicates that everyone has all the main traits no matter the levels. It could be low or high, for example, someone could have 15% extraversion whereas another person could have 98% extraversion. They both still have them. This connects to identity because personality is the way you act/behave around other people, how other people see you and because of personality, every person is unique. Values are also connected to identity. For example, if someone values helping people and caring for people that makes them more agreeable. ( Pe onali . Apple Book . Ne

My big 5 personality traits are all pretty similarly ranked. If we look at the chart we can see that my highest ranking is agreeableness. I would agree with this because I am very empathetic and I like to help out. I am a social person but in small groups and I have a very optimistic view of life. My lowest ranking is neuroticism. I am happy that this is my lowest one but I would want to make it lower. I talk myself down a lot and I get too anxious sometimes. One way that I am planning to lower it is having more self-motivation and self-belief as well as decreasing my negative self-talk. Something I'd like to raise is my ranking of extraversion. It is higher than 50% which I can agree and disagree with. I agree with it because I like to socialize with people and I always have energy and enthusiasm as well as being outgoing. I disagree with this because in big groups of people I quiet down and become shy. I am also not very dominant in new places or around new people. I am planning to raise it by trying to be more dominant in new places and not be scared to speak in a big group of people.

In conclusion, the big 5 traits can help us understand ourselves and others. The personality ibook says that “Personality is made up of the patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that make a person unique. This means that everyone is unique in their own way because of what they think and feel as well as behave. This is important to understand because it affects the friendships we have with our peers, the way we interact with people, and what we value making our rankings with OCEAN all different.

Stereotypes such as expecting girls to be quiet and obedient can harm girls mentally, emotionally, and maybe even physically by making them feel looked down upon, discourage them, and could even lead to anxiety. This could even make some boys feel like they can take advantage of girls. When I was younger I used to always hear people around me excuse the bad behavior of boys by saying boys will be boys . I never understood why boys were allowed to do something unacceptable in public as to where if a girl did it, people would talk about it and be shocked. The saying boys will be boys just allows h p :// .ma ke ing eek.com/b and - ic e - le -gende - e eo pe / unacceptable behavior in public. In my opinion, gender, sex, and sexuality A stereotype that is harmful to boys is where boys are strong are some of the most important parts that and independent. It makes them feel like they need to be make up your identity. It is important to dominant and that if they showed emotion they would be weak . understand what each of them means first This can then result with boys doing drugs and being violent though. Gender is what you identify because it can be a way for them to cope with the pressure. In yourself as, sex is what the doctor assigns the newsela article, Boys' and girls' roles in the world, it says you at birth, whether it s boy or girl, and that “Boys who dress or behave in a way girls usually do are sexuality is who you are attracted to. often bullied, teased and beaten. This is an example of toxic masculinity. (Toxic masculinity is when guys feel pressured to The newsela article, Boys' and girls' roles be more masculine to point where it becomes harmful towards in the world, states that “Gender them.) The stereotype that boys are supposed to dress one way stereotypes are strongly established in is harmful because it stops a lot of boys from showing their true today's youth by age 10, according to a selves or let them dress the way they want to because they are new study just released. Gender scared of what society might think of them. stereotypes layout a society's set ideas Some celebrities that broke gender norms are Harry styles and about the ways boys and girls should Timothee chalamet. They did this by wearing feminine clothes in behave. A connection I make to this is public, jewelry, etc. that when I was younger, maybe 9 or 10, Like I said earlier, gender stereotypes are harmful by making I remember that I was never really a girly girls feel unworthy and boys feel like they can't be emotional or girl and that I used to love to play with dress the way they want to. One start to how we can fight trains. The girls that I was friends with at against these stereotypes are by not being afraid of what other the time always thought that I was weird people think of you/expressing yourself. In our world today we because I used to prefer trains over start to see more and more people getting represented but there barbies. They used to say that girls were is still a huge lack of representation. For example, how many not supposed to play with trains and that asian superheroes in comic books can you count? Or how many we were supposed to play with dolls. This characters do you see on tv shows that are from the LGBTIQ+ always made me feel bad about myself. community? It is important that everyone gets represented in our Stereotypes like that can be so harmful to world so that we feel a belonging and inspired, as well as raising both girls and boys. our self-esteem.

n od c ion Gender and se ualit are something that ever one has, whether it is an absence of both or multiple. Despite the fact that gender and se ualit should reall onl affect two aspects of life, gender and se ualit , the don t. Due to prejudices that some people have whether because of religion or some misguided belief that it s unnatural, man people belonging to the LGBTQ+ communit are prevented from the pursuit of happiness, for no good reason. But how have things changed for them in the last few decades?

● Gender/Sex/Sexuality Gender and sexuality while seeming like they go hand in hand are actually two different parts of a person. Both are something that an individual must choose for themselves. There are many different sexualities and genders, there are also flags to represent these specific groups of people. The first rainbow flag was created as a symbol for the LGBTQ+ community in 1978 by Gilbert Baker. Since then many flags have popped up the represent different people, a huge number of flags have had their start on tumbler, the backbone of the internet. Having a flag for different genders and sexualities has the same purpose as a country having a flag for themselves, it s a way to say I m here, and I m going to be here for the long run. or as the popular slogan says I m here and I m queer! It s something shout, something to represent yourself with. In the last 60-70 years out ideas about gender and sexuality have drastically changed as a society, these changes are important and are marked by different events, such as stonewall. Gay history is long and just as equally complicated and vibrant, the first country in the world to offer a same-sex union with similar rights to that of a married heterosexual couple was Denmark in 1989, at the time this was seen as a huge step for equal rights. The first country in the world to legali e gay marriage was the Netherlands in 2001, only 19 years ago. Since then 29 more countries have legali ed same-sex marriage. The first legal same-sex marriage in the world was performed just after midnight on April 1st 2001 by Job Cohen the mayor of Amsterdam between Anne-Marie Thus and Helene Faasen. The reason that this is so important is because it provides a sense of normality, it provides footsteps to follow in, it gives countries the ability to say We aren t the first, it s already being done! It makes homosexuality the norm. Much like sexuality, there are many different genders, both binary and not. Transgender is an umbrella term for people who do not identify with the gender that they were assigned at birth, this happens for various reasons, the person may be intersex, non-binary, agender, or simply identify with the other gender more than the one they were assigned at birth with. Christine Jorgensen was the first person in the US to have gender reassignment surgery, this surgery took place in 1989. It is important to understand this as a middle schooler because at one point middle schoolers will be adults and the old adults will be dead. Learning and developing opinions is something that children do from an early age, at one point they simply parrot their parents but as they grow older they begin to form their own ideas and opinions about how the world should function. It s 2

important to teach children empathy and open-mindedness because if you don t you get things like this We re giving children free health care, we re giving them free food, free emotional support. That s dangerous. That s communism when you think about it. -Christian Activist Rebecca Friedrichs said on Fox News. This mindset isn t something that someone forms individually, it s something that gets passed down and grows over time. Teaching empathy and understanding is something that benefits everyone in a community, it allows you to look at something objectively and decide how does this affect us as a whole, does this harm, anyone, personally? and make choices that benefit everyone equally.
