HOW DOES GENDER, SEX, SEXUALITY, RACE, ETHNICITY, AND CULTURE RELATE TO OUR IDENTITY?
Kai l
" HE FE I AL A NBELIE ABL We live in a society where the concepts of gender, sex, and sexuality can either mean ENJO ABLEare- words F Nthat ALL very little or a lot to someone s identity. Often these words are just tossed around, confused by each ARO ND!"
other, this mix up can be harmful. Over the past few centuries, as more knowledge is gained, we understand new beliefs about these terms, causing us to question what we may have been taught before as the world becomes more accepting. Because society progresses, words can change over time, causing confusion and general annoyance. So let s take a closer look at what exactly gender, sex, and sexuality is delve into the connections between the three, and why they are important to know. Let s start by defining sex and exploring its relation to another topic gender. What defines sex? Is sex based on chromosomes? Genitals? Predominant sex hormones? Or is it all three? It is often taught and said by people that there are only two sexes, and you might have been raised this way, being assigned one of those two sexes shortly after birth: male, or female. This argument that there are only two sexes is and has disputed though, one example being simply with the existence of intersex people, people who don t fit into the category of male and female. In fact, research has shown that there are as many as 5 to 7 sexes. These varying sexes aren t wrong or unnatural . Nothing in nature that exists is unnatural, in fact, as much as 1.7 percent of the population is intersex. Arguing that these 1.7 percent are unnatural is like arguing that redheads, which make up 1 2 of the population aren t natural which is simply not true. One example of intersex is people with Kleinfelter Syndrome. People born with Kleinfelter syndrome are usually assigned male at birth, despite having XXY chromosomes as opposed to XX, lower testosterone levels, enlarged breast tissues, and wider hips, usually considered feminine. Another example of how the categories of biological sex have been challenged are with transgender people. A transgender woman who was assigned male at birth might have a penis, XY chromosomes, and pursued physical transition by taking hormone replacement therapy to make estrogen her primary hormone. Despite her genitals and chromosomes differing from what is considered the norm for females, she is female nonetheless. This ties to gender and gender identity. Just like sex, we are often told there are only 2 genders, but same with gender, we have begun to realize gender isn t fixed. Sex is assigned by a doctor or scientists, gender though is defined by societal standards and people themselves. Gender roles differ between cultures and change over time pink used to be a boy color , but now is associated with femininity and girls. As gender is a social construct, meaning that there is no science that goes into the creation of gender, intending nothing if humans don t give a purpose to it, it means gender also exists on a spectrum. There are infinite genders with a few set labels, and regardless of the sex you were assigned at birth you can identify as any gender. Man, woman, anywhere in between. As touched on before, you can identify as a man despite being assigned female at birth. This is called transgender, not to be confused with intersex. Opposed to transgender, people whose gender identity lines up with what they were assigned at birth are cisgender. Someone assigned male at birth and identifies as a man is a cis gendered man. People who do not identify themselves with the genders of men women are non binary.

Simply put, sexuality is who you are attracted to and how your gender identity relates to that attraction. Lets define some labels and explore what LGBTQ means. LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer, but some of those labels don t quite work with some people. Some other labels include queer, which is an umbrella term for anyone who isn t cis gendered or heterosexual, pansexual, which is attraction to all genders without gender being a factor, and asexual aromantic, not experiencing sexual or romantic attraction respectively.

Historically the LGBTQ and racial minorities have been ostracized and oppressed but as we progress we become more accepting, breaking stereotypes, societal, and political norms, leading us to a discussion on modern representation and what that can mean for these norms and stereotypes. A stereotype is an idea or judgement made on a person or a group of people before knowing them. Some stereotypes about gender can include saying boys can t cry, show emotion, or dress in stereotypically feminine ways, and being encouraged to go outside and be active without adult supervision. These can be dangerous as bottling up emotions can lead to aggression to prove their manliness , leading to even substance abuse and risk of danger to others. Not allowing boys to dress in ways they want can also invalidate their feelings about themselves and make boys feel like they can t express themselves. These boys can also be bullied or teased for dressing differently In contrast, girls have been accepted for wanting to dress like or act like a stereotypical boy, but still face multitudes of negative stereotypes. For example, girls are stereotyped as overemotional and reliant on men, staying at home, cooking and cleaning, accepting what other people tell them to do. These stereotypes can lead girls to danger, encouraging abuse and leaving them susceptible to sexual and physical abuse, or dropping out of school.

Racial and ethnic stereotypes also exist. For example, Black men are often stereotyped as thugs or criminals , and are often discriminated against both day to day and systemically. In contrast, Asians have been stereotyped as the model minority , a minority who demographically is deemed to achieve higher socioeconomic status, polite and law abiding. This can be dangerous to Asians as it erases diversity in Asian Americans, grouping all Asian Americans together even though there is difference in culture all throughout Asia. This myth also erases racism that Asians still face. Asian culture has often been appropriated, stereotyped, and made to seem exotic . Asians are all made to seem like Kung fu masters, or the smart nerd in the class that nobody is friends with. These are all stereotypes that This also creates a paradox for Asians They are the most assimilated minority group in America, but they are also and will always be foreigners.

'M e perience'
OCEAN IN

Luckily for us, society is progressing past the need for these gender and racial stereotypes, delving into the topic of breaking stereotypes, exploring modern representation and going back to culture. One example of how these stereotypes just talked about are being broken is within the hiphop community. The hiphop and rap community has been mostly a heteronormative dominated community, fueled by excessive masculinity and homophobia. Classic rap or hiphop music often features derogatory gay slurs. But as generations proceed, we start to see more acceptance. One example of how there has been more representation for queer black men is with well known R B hiphop singer, Frank Ocean, a grammy award winning artist. Ocean struck the hiphop community when he came out as bisexual and wrote about falling in love with a man. In the Newsela article Lil Nas X comes out but has hiphop? Macho culture at cross roads, Singer songwriter Iman Jordan quotes "Frank Ocean was the beginning of the revolution. But people had to warm up to it and sometimes the collective warm up can take more time than we think," said singer songwriter Iman Jordan. "We've gotten used to seeing white queer men become megastars. I'm looking forward to the day when more black queer men are seen." This highlights that despite hiphop becoming a more welcoming and diverse community, there is still a long way to go, especially representing, but also queer black folk. HOW DOES GENDER, SEX, SEXUAL TY, RACE, ETHN C TY, AND CULTURE RELATE TO OUR DENT TY?
PG 3
As an Asian American I have often been invalidated because of my race. I have been told i m not a true American, because I m not white, or Why does she care? She s not even from America, , and of course the where are you really from? I was born in American. That is enough to say I am American, but my Chinese ethnicity will always be there for people to try to invalidate me with. Sometimes I feel caught between these two, not sure where I really am from.
' hi d c
This is just one example of why representation in media matters. Many young minorities may never have had a role model to look up to in the media, and seeing themselves represented in ways that aren t stereotypical can be empowering and inspiring. As an ethnically Chinese girl, I have often felt unrepresented in media. Most times that I ve seen people like me on TV, the stereotypical token Asian who lacks depth, is nerdy and smart, reduced to a side character, like Cho Chang from Harry Potter, put in the smart house and with two Asian sounding last names as her entire first name. I remember when I first watched Disney's Mulan 1998 , a story about an independent, hard working Chinese girl who fights for honor in her family, I felt empowered and proud in more than one way. There was finally a Disney princess that wasn t stereotypically feminine, who didn t need a prince to rely on, who had her own independence.
e kid'
I never felt like I knew much about my own Chinese heritage, but seeing that film made me want to learn more about it. As an Asian American third culture kid , I never felt like I could really go back to my culture because I felt like I didn t have anyone to really look up to. The Newsela Article As one of the "third culture kids," she feels both rootless and worldly defines a third culture kid as children who have spent much of their early lives outside of their parents' culture. They tend to mix their parents' culture with a new one, creating their own third culture. I have been able to experience other peoples cultures, as I ve moved around from being born in the USA, to Northern Ireland, and to living in Thailand for 8 years of my life. I am thankful for the experience of being able to share in what other cultures are like and to have an open worldly view, but I also feel lost at times at not being able to experience what my own culture is fully like. Seeing people of my culture being represented in a positive way made me feel proud and thankful for being able to have my culture shared across media for others to see, making me want to learn more about it. My Chinese culture makes me proud of who I am, and without it I wouldn t be who I am today. Being a third culture kid has not only made me want to reconnect more with my culture though, but also made me see just how many unique cultures there are worldwide and how we can share so many differences and similarities. Open mindedness has been a value that I ve seen universally. No matter what countries we are from, what race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, we should all keep an open mind to new things and accept people for who they are.

our personality is the type of person you are. he big 5 character traits are openness conscientiousness extraversion agreeableness and neuroticism. hey are what shape your identity. ou can have more of one trait than the others. For example someone can be more open than neurotic and so they might like to draw and do art rather than to be frustrated and worried all the time like a more neurotic person. ou can show your personality by what you say how you look how you think or how you act. our personality is an important part of your identity because it can show others the kind of person you are. our personality can also change easily and can take you further in life. For example you can set goals for yourself in order to change and become a better person. Setting goals for us to be a better person by improving some of our personality traits might not always work for everyone. For example you might be mostly neurotic and want to be more agreeable. But because you are mostly neurotic you are worried if you are doing the right thing and if you should actually do it or not. ou can also change your personality by spending time with others who have different personality traits and types than you because someone else s personality can also change yours. Our personality matters to us because it can help others and even us understand ourselves more. he big 5 traits help us understand ourselves and others better because it helps us understand and respect our personalities and how they shape our identity. It is better for us to know our personality traits so then we don t feel alone if we don t know why or how we act a certain way. It is important to know that even if we don t like some of our personality traits it can keep us out of danger and help us go on a better path in our life when we get older. For example having a lot of conscientiousness helps us notice that there is something wrong in dangerous situations. People who are more conscientious often pay attention to details and are always prepared. his means that they might spot out a change and act quickly in a dangerous situation.

What are the parts that make o r personalit ? Ho does that affect o r identit ? Well, to start, there are 5 different personalit traits. E tra ersion, Openness, Conscientio sness, Agreeableness and Ne roticism (Ang s Chen). These traits each contrib te to o r personalit in their o n a . Ha ing a higher amo nt of E tra ersion means it is likel that o ill ha e more energ , be more o tgoing and be more sociall engaged b t o are also more likel to talk nonsense and more prone to not thinking before o act. In m scores abo e, I ha e been sho n to ha e high amo nts of this trait, hich can be seen in m tendenc to constantl make jokes, e en hen I reall sho ldn t. More Openness means that o are more likel to be eas going, imaginati e and creati e b t are also more npredictable and more likel to ha e less foc s. This is act all the trait that I ha e the least of. Yo can see this b the fact that, altho gh I make jokes, I o ldn t describe m self in the least as eas going. I am al a s orr ing abo t something. Also, I am admittedl horrible at imaginati e and creati e tasks. Conscientio sness means o ill likel be more foc sed and responsible b t also ha e a higher tendenc to ards perfectionism and st bbornness. The Personalit I-book describes Conscientio s people ha ing a tendenc to displa selfdiscipline, act d tif ll , and stri e for achie ement or ha e high e pectations for oneself. It is related to the a in hich people control, reg late, and direct their imp lses and states that people ith high conscientio sness are tendenc to displa self-discipline, act d tif ll , and stri e for achie ement or ha e high e pectations for oneself. It is related to the a in hich people control, reg late, and direct their imp lses (E cerpt From: Personalit . Apple Books.). Like E tra ersion, Conscientio sness is also one of m higher traits and can be seen in ho foc sed and responsible I am as ell as m high e pectations for m self altho gh I lack some of the traits common to people high in this trait, s ch as imp lse control. More Agreeableness means o are likel to ha e more optimism and be more kind b t o ill also be easier to take ad antage of. It is not s rprising to me that I don t possess this trait in high q antities, seeing as optimistic and kind are some of the least likel ords to se hen describing me. Lastl , People ith higher Ne roticism are s all easier to stress, are more likel to be emotionall nstable and more self-conscio s b t also s all displa higher le els of empath . Some hat s rprisingl and some hat ns rprisingl , m highest trait is Ne roticism. This is e pected beca se I ha e a penchant for orr ing, stress, self-do bt as ell as a tendenc to ards mood s ings. Ho e er, I o ldn t think I am partic larl empathetic and it is not a common descriptor of me. All of these traits are e perienced on a spectr m and all of them are req ired in order to li e a health lifest le (E cerpt From: Personalit . Apple Books.)

These traits are important parts of one s identit beca se the define ho o act aro nd others and ho o ork and the a s o think. For e ample, hen o go to school, some people tend to ha e more friends than others and some people tend to sh a a from others. These people sho different le els of e tra ersion, b t still ha e some, e en if it is a small amo nt. And hen o go to class, the people ho ha e all the ork done and are al a s foc sed ill s all ha e more Conscientio sness than those ho aren t foc sed. While people ith more openness are more likel to do better in creati e tasks and abstract thinking than those ith less. And people ith more agreeableness ill be more likel to be liked b people for the fact that the are kind. Finall , people ith higher ne roticism ill probabl be more stressed d ring a test. So, no that e kno hat the are all abo t, let's ask some deeper q estions, like h kno ing these traits matters. I think that it is important to recogni e them in o rsel es and in others beca se it helps s nderstand their beha io r and can also help s nderstand hat to e pect from certain people and ho to help them. I think that it is important to recogni e them in o rsel es beca se the help s nderstand o rsel es better b sho ing s the potential roots and ca ses of o r actions hich can sho s ho e can impro e o rsel es. For e ample, if e kno that o r highest trait is e tra ersion, then o can more acti el take steps to ma be be less lo d and open, ma be tr meditation or acti ities that req ire more sing lar foc s. The Personalit I-book s ggests that kno ing o r different traits and ho m ch of each of them o ha e can help beca se Kno ing o rself means respecting, b t not being attached to o r c rrent strengths and eaknesses, desires and dreams, tho ghts and feelings, likes and dislikes, tolerance and limitations. (E cerpt From: Personalit . Apple Books.)
To start off, the most important thing to kno before disc ssing these is hat the are. Firstl , se : se is the biological part hich is determined at birth and, nlike gender, is not a social constr ct. Se is assigned to someone at birth, altho gh it can be changed thro gh s rger . The thing abo t se is that, altho gh o probabl kno the 2 most common ones, there are a hole range of them. In fact, according to Gender, se and se alit e plained b KC Clements, there are act all o er 5 biological se es ith ro ghl 1.7% of e er one on earth possessing one of them. Ne t p is gender: as mentioned briefl before, gender is a social constr ct that is sed b societies to stereot pe the different se es. Like most stereot pes, the change o er time and can contradict each other hen compared ith the gender stereot pes of different c lt res. This is p t into simpler terms in the same article: Gender, se and se alit e plained b KC Clements, here he rote that gender is act all a s stem of ideas that determine ho bo s and girls, men and omen in a gi en societ are e pected to beha e. . Some of the gender roles are more harmf l than others and hile the can all ha e negati e effects, some are orse than others. For e ample, the idea that females sho ld be more passi e and males sho ld be more asserti e can ca se females ho might ha e m ch better ideas and might be great leaders to take a sideline in a ide ariet of sit ations and s bjects. On the other hand, the stereot pes abo t hich colo rs are for ho, hile it can ca se some people to sh n those ho think less of people for liking certain colo rs. This can ca se loneliness and a hole b nch of other problems, b t it does not carr the same eight as the res lt of the other stereot pe.
No , Se alit . This is probabl the most disc ssed one of the three mentioned so far and is probabl the most ell kno n. Se alit determines hat sort of people o feel se al and romantic attraction for. There is a hole range of se alities, b t o ma alread be familiar ith the more ell-kno n ones, s ch as: ga , straight, lesbian and bise al. Stereot pes are ho people generali e others, s all gro ps that the aren t part of. This is often detrimental to people ho are part of that gro p beca se it sets j dgements of people before o meet them and can ca se people of gro ps ho are more hea il stereot ped (especiall those in gro ps ith man negati e stereot pes) to lose opport nities based on those j dgements, s ch as jobs. Media Representation is, as the name s ggests, the representation people get in all forms of media. Media Representation is important to people, those ho don t often get representation, beca se, as research from the Women s Media Center has sho n that positi e representation can make girls "feel strong, bra e, confident, inspired, positi e and moti ated." (Bro n)
All of these, especiall gender and se alit , are important parts of ho e are and can help s nderstand o rsel es better beca se hen e nderstand the parts that make s, e can better nderstand o rsel es as a hole. Stereot pes and Media Representation are important beca se stereot pes can ha e harmf l effects, s ch as ostraci ation, lo self-esteem, and fe er opport nities in life. For e ample, one of the orst stereot pes b far is that all M slims are terrorists. On top of this being blatantl ntr e and statisticall impossible, it also makes people more afraid of them, hich means that people ill tr to a oid them. Also, people ho think that someone co ld be dangero s o ld be less likel to tr st or e en hire that person if there is someone ho is stereot picall safer than them. Media Representation fits into this beca se, if it is negati e, it can strengthen and reinforce stereot pes and on rare occasions, e en create them. This is beca se, hen people see other people seeing a gro p in the same a as the do, it reaffirms their ie s. Ho e er, Media Representation can also be positi e. For e ample, if someone does ha e a positi e role model thanks to Media Representation, then, as said b the president of the Women s Media Center, J lie B rton, "O r research fo nd that female sci-fi and s perhero characters help bridge the confidence gap for girls," And that it makes them "feel strong, bra e, confident, inspired, positi e and moti ated."
